It's not All on Locke. Can anyone but Anthony consistently catch passes?? The pass catching was absolutely horrendous. Badgers need to prepare their Starting 2025 QB/Receiver Combinations Now! Run Clean Routes & Catch the Ball. Balls are hitting receivers in The Hands!!!
With Longo you could chalk last years playcalling up to getting to know his players. This year, you chalk it up to Longo is not a very good OC. He doesn’t seem to have the ability to adjust his playcalling when a defense is shutting him down. I don’t like how much we run out of shotgun and we don’t get the TEs involved enough in the middle of the field to open up the boundary routes.
repeatedly running between the Tackles against teams with good DLines - terrible. Longo needs to limit that approach to 20 times per game (10 per half and no more!)
A different QB won't make a difference if Receivers don't catch good passes consistently. We cannot have a "Balanced Attack" without Receivers catching passes - other than Anthony - pass catching was atrocious
Second half is what separates talent. The better team imposes their talent and will on the lesser team. Just like UW did to Rutgers, Northwestern and Purdue.
Badgers have lost 3 games in the 2nd half this season: Bama, USC and now PSU. The Halftime adjustments and Play calling in these 3 halfs were atrocious. How many times against PSU did we see Tawee Walker run between the tackles. If you want to critique Yards Per Carry - you need only look at Longo's run plays. I spent 50 years as a Cincinnati Bengals Fan - I know crappy predictably conservative play calling. Horrible!!!
So, why not take advantage of a TVD being upright and, throwing by spring? That gives him spring, summer and fall to get hundreds of reps with pauling, CJ, Trech, Dupree etc
Good job Ryan on the push back, not letting Curtis bulldoze you. Also, it was reported all off season Locke and TVD split reps, so a lot of his narrative is off
Curtis was kinda bulldozing, but I do agree with his points. While they split reps in spring, more 1s went with TVD in fall, and Locke didn't get the first 2 games either. Would've helped. Also, I agree with him on portal QB, unless you can find (and pay for) a dude that's really good and/or has lots of experience in Longo's offense, you're not likely to get an upgrade with someone that is a bit quicker or can throw a bit harder. Fans don't often understand or see the mental part, extra important in an offense like this, which Locke really has. For all we know that offsets physical traits of some other "B" QB that comes in. Also, as curtis notes, Locke was an "A" QB for much of the month. Playing the #3 team can do that. Lots of opportunity coming up to see how this team fairs against the middle of the conference. We know they've smoked the bottom and lost to the top. If things really fall apart here and the OC is canned, etc., then all bets are off. Beat Iowa.
Skyler Bell dropped one ball and y'all ran him out of town. Pauling has dropped so many I've lost count this season. Pauling stinks this year. Kenny Guiton - why does he get a free pass?
Hawks fan here. Excited for the game, it will be very competitive. B. Sullivan is the wildcard. Extremely athletic, but his ability to throw downfield is a question mark.
the PSU DL dominated the game and the OL looked over-matched. UW had liitle to no chance without a running threat. UW is at least 2 notched below PSU. Unfortunately UW is closer to Minnesota and MSU than PSU or OSU. Grading Locke at c- or D+ IMO is accurate. His bone-headed pick six was a killer. At the press conference Locke said he saw the DB and yet he still threw the pass. SMH
sorry, that is a poor excuse for Locke. He has been here, has started games in two seasons, and was called QB 1-b this summer, also revisionism about Coan, Coan got better quickly, Coan didn't have previous starts before getting tossed in. Locke has been Locke for more than 10 starts, 5 pointless TOs that last 4 games.
My big issue with Curtis’ point is that the other options also being bad doesn’t mean Locke will be better. We all agree that he’s turning the ball over too much right now. But having more time in the system won’t necessarily improve that. Sure, bringing in a new guy might not work out, but the idea that Locke will learn not to throw backbreaking interceptions every game if given the offseason is just as speculative. For some guys, it just never clicks, and Locke doesn’t have the physical tools to bail himself out if it doesn’t.
Love Curtis but with Ryan on this. Thinking it goes here if the O struggles down the stretch. Longo leaves. QB room may shrink? New OC brings in his guy.
We can’t find a QB to throw better than 50% in portal? And every QB we get from now on has to live up Russell Wilson’s 1yr leading the team. That ended in No Bowl Win.
Locke has turned the ball in every game he has played this season. Either the OC is not putting Locke in the right situations to succeed or Locke is not elevating the offense.
Mike Leach never really had A-rated quarterbacks. Air raid just needs a good smart system quarterback. I think Locke managed the game well against Penn State and can be the QB of the future. If Longo is fired, the debate will be moot. Locke and Mabrey leave with him.
I don't hate locke. Fans need to take a step back and look at other teams. Many QBs on great teams struggle in big games time to time. Look at Ewers last game. Mcnamara? Raiola had a horrific game against rutgers and indiana. Michigan Qbs are terrible. Also some "better" Qbs have the luxury of several 5 star receivers who just make plays (aka miller moss). We also just play harder teams than usual. I think he is the best QB since Wilson still. Wish he could run, but it is what it is.
I think Locke is a great kid, hard worker, probably smart, but makes too many mistakes (re: turnovers) at crucial times. Can he improve on this? Doubtful
If you cant out physical a team, you have to outcoach/scheme them. Any time we play a team thats more physical than us, we ALWAYS get outcoached/schemed. If the teams above you are more physical and smarter, how the F do you plan to beat them EVER ?
Poor Pass Catching rendered the Run Game completely ineffective all of which got progressively worse as the PSU Game wore on - end of story. I agree with Curtis. Every day for a year he needs to practice throw and catch with all the receivers - because the receivers looked like this was the first time they had been thrown passes from Locke. Way too much hype on the Receiver Room - it is a Glaring Weakness!!!
TVD may not have made the decisions as well though, we don't know since he got hurt so quickly. It's reasonable to assume we'd have the same record with TVD and people would be calling for Locke right now.
The disconnect here is that Curtis and Ryan cannot accurately measure where the Badgers are. Penn State is undefeated last couple seasons against bad big ten teams. We are a bad big ten team now.
@ By bad big ten teams I meant teams that aren’t in serious contention for the conference championship. We are not in serious contention for the conference championship and haven’t been for half a decade.
@@sharpe52312 Ah, gotcha. I guess I have an extra tier in there. Bad, mid, contenders. WIth only 3-4 teams in Contenders (4 if one includes Indiana, which I guess gotta despite what I think about their schedule). I think if we switched schedules with IN we'd also switch records, but whatever. The badgers could still end up at firth in the conference, which I would not call bad.
Penn St is undefeated against teams that can't win the conference. It doesn't mean anyone that doesn't win the conference is bad. WI is an average to below average B1G team.
Curtis tries to sound smart to stupid people. PSU didn't get to Locke because Locke released the ball in 2.1 seconds on average. That's the highest rated PFF grade for any QB that PSU played this season. It takes our pass rush 2.7 seconds to get home on average. So kudos to Locke for simply making one read and passing it no matter what. Including to a wide open PSU defender. The film also shows that Locke actually could've thrown 4 INTs in the game but escaped with 1. No one said that PSU is a natty contender since we've had key starters out or injured the last month. We simply said don't compare us to Purdue, Northwestern, and Rutgers. Our goal is to go to the playoffs and be in a position to win it all. Right now PSU is on schedule. You watched All 22 film and couldn't see PSU's front 7 is among the best in the nation? Then what's the point in your watching film if you don't understand what you're watching. PSU's best overall game was against West Virginia and not Wisconsin. That was the first game of the year when we were at full health. The most dominant defense game was against Illinois. You didn't watch it?
Yac should be RB1. The reason he’s not is because of NIL $$$. Have the balls to talk about the tough topics. I understand Wisconsin isn’t NYC, but if local media is just cheeseballs & softballs it doesn’t put pressure on the coaching staff to step up.
I agree with Curtis on this topic. Locke will not elevate our play and it’ll cost too many dollars to potentially get a guy to elevate. Why do something again that hasn’t worked two years at this point? Another factor is Longos offense seems to complicated for some to get. I prefer Locke and have him get an offseason to develop
We need a B+ QB to get to the next level!!! Locke is just not good. He’s not accurate, he throws picks, he must be seeing ghosts out there. He’s as tall as Russell Wilson but is not even on the same planet in terms of his ability to extend plays, elusiveness and speed. Let’s move on to the freshman!
Patience. It takes 4 years to become a contender in the B1G. Even then, OSU, Michigan, PSU, USC and Oregon will be obstacles every year. Iowa will always be tough to play. Who is going to move up and regularly challenge the top teams?
It would be nice if Badger Receivers would just catch the balls that hit them in their hands. Different game if Receivers consistently catch good passes. That's called a "Balanced Offense"
Curtis came strong and it was a little uncomfortable, but the feeling of not being comfortable seems to fit where a lot of Badger fans are at this point. There is no obvious path forward at the most important position in sports and that is concerning. However - Ryan, seeing your little boy helps keep all of this in perspective.

Dude, your son is a beast taking over the show like that. Future Badgers DL?
Imagine if he signed with MIN, lol.
One of the best takes on the transfer portal I've heard. A much needed reality check.

Came from the podcast to see the takeover of the last two minutes! 😅 Handled it great, Ryan. Go Badgers!
appreciate ya Josh !!!
portal is working quite well in coral gables
I agree with Curtis.
Maybe try the “Go Go” offense run by UNLV? A rpo system but with 2 backs in backfield with the qb often both on the strong side next to the qb.
Curtis is always great to listen to. He never mentions his Dad??
love Curtis!

7 drops from UWs star WR on the year. Most the drops are on fuggin slants! Catch the ball.

I have OC envy
I think Curtis might be on to something. The NFL is having this same conversation on teams giving up on QB's too quick.
i know it's just exhibition but from how the game went it could be a very long year for Bucky😭 #FIREGARDO
Much resect to Curtis, still not giving us as much credit as we deserve but beef squashed.

he is john stocco part 2, stocco was also awful as a RS soph
Locke has been our best QB since Russell Wilson? Are you serious?
Locke is a gunslinger, without the big play ability.
