Late Fall Indoor Bonsai Pruning (Broom style Portulacaria Afra Dwarf Jade)

  • I do some significant new growth reduction on my original PA bonsai in order to bring it back into profile and get it ready for public display this holiday season. These trees are also known as Portulacaria Afra, Elephant Bush, and Spekboom. Jade plants are an excellent choice for indoor bonsai due to their fat trunks, fast growth, drought tolerance, and overall ease of care in a bonsai pot.

I enjoy watching the entire process. You give us an interesting commentary that I gain knowledge from. The thought for the day usually gets me thinking. Lovely tree. Will be interesting to see if it recovers to the point you want for your guests.

Thanks for the comments!! It’s good to hear that folks are liking the format.
This tree responds very quickly, perhaps because of the deep pot with lots of root room, so I’m sure it will be presentable. I mean, most folks are only very casually aware of bonsai, so anything in a pot generates lots of interest!! 🙏❤️🌲

Hi Tom, I really enjoy your videos. I'm have almost finished watching all your videos, just a few more from your first year.
I do enjoy your commentary/ thoughts, ideas, pruning points, explanations plant growth info on the different varieties of trees you have. I like how you share the info on the different varieties/styles of pots. It has got me looking for some of those old vintage looking ones on cragslist or on ebay. The other day I watched a video on your Manny PA and fell in love with it and was able to find a very, very small plant (in a 1.5" pot) at Home Depot today. I got so excited.
I like how you encourage us viewers to not be afraid to do grow our plants to what we think is nice to us and not to always follow the rules of Bonsai and just follow our hearts and imaginations. I thank you for that. Thank you for sharing.

Hey Tom, hope you’re doing well and Mable. I enjoy the longer episodes. I’ve rewatched your entire vid catalog in the last month at work in my headphones. Hearing you talk about everything scratches an itch I have while my Ports are growing.

I'm new to bonsai so I like to hear your thought process. Even though I wouldn't always do the same as you, it helps me logic through pruning my own trees.

Thank you Nina. The thing I love about bonsai is how different artists will make different decisions even with the same tree!
I watch many videos where I am surprised by sometimes by the choices made, but am also pleased when I would make the same decisions.
Thanks for the feedback Nina and also for watching!! 🙏❤️🌲

    Love the tree!
I just got my first jade trees saved from the clearance rack at my local nursery. Portulacaria Midstripe and Portulacaria Molokiniensis. Really looking forward to joining you on this bonsai journey!

Fantastic Storm!! And thanks for watching and commenting!
The clearance rack is a great hunting ground for sure. I also recently acquired a Molokinie.. and it is growing well - looking forward to seeing how it develops.
Good luck on your journey! 🍀 🙏❤️🌲

You can make your own with a lazy Susan from hardware store. Make it any size and shape with boards. My husband makes mine. Nothing fancy but works

Great idea! I’ve also heard of folks using lab chairs - those stills that rotate which would be great as well.

It's always confusing about PA growth...some folks state that they love to be root bound...Little Jade bonsai has a video showing the amazing growth in a larger pot vs smaller. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. In the past, I always stopped fertilizing in the winter, but now I fertilize year round. There's not much difference in growth, but the trees look healthier.
FWIW I like the length of your video's.. I picked up a nice little turntable at goodwill..its more of a kitchen lazy susan, but its got ball bearings..😊

    • @CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom
      @CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom  หลายเดือนก่อน

Their growth is confusing. My feeling is that as long as they are warm and get light, they want to grow as much as they can! Very forgiving plants with the only major kryptonite being too much water!!💦
Thanks for the feedback Dave! Ball bearings work great! I’ve been on the lookout for one of those high school lab spring stools which I think would work great as a pruning stand for trees!! I saw one for free while on a wall in my neighborhood last year, but by the time I got back to it with my car someone had picked it up.
I hope you enjoy the new turntable and as always thanks for commenting! 🙏❤️🌲

So your video narration/decision making keeps the video flowing along...I personally don't like watching fast-forwarding, because you don't get to hear the selection process...Your videos seem to just zip by leaving me to watch them again to get my fill and all the great details...Great thought for the day...Thanks for sharing...

Thank you Dan! (Sorry, I mean Nate - that was a joke by the way!!). 😁
I appreciate the feedback immensely. The older that I get the more I seem to talk to, well, not only the dog but also to myself. So, the channel is a natural outlet for me! It’s also great that folks seems to enjoy it as well.
I have a friend who is starting TH-cam and struggles with talking in the videos and was asking for general tips but specifically how to get comfortable talking. I said, I have no idea why - but it seems like the most natural thing in the world to me!! 🙏❤️🌲

Thanks for the offer - he hasn’t posted anything yet! I told him you just have to do it and you’ll figure it out. Some of my first videos were, uhhhhhhh, leaving room for improvement! 😁

      🤣 Indeed!!
Like my highs school algebra teacher used to tell us when we got less than 100% on a test. “Gotta leave a little room for improvement!” It’s been good life advice - I like to think of it as the old saying the perfect is the newest of the good.
Keep watching, it will eventually get there my friend!
Thanks for watching and being part of the channel and commenting Michael!! 🙏❤️🌲
