Jazakallahu khair, now I know a little bit more about Uhud battle and their locations during the battle, looks like the Mountain is quite far from the battlefield, must have been extremely difficult for them at the time of retreating towards the base of the mountain

The archer story doesn't make sense to me unless they were protecting a narrow pass. Fifty archers cannot defend such a wide space between Jabal al ainain and Uhud. A contingent of 100-200 horsemen could have easily defeated them. Also, placing archers high on a mountain means they would be ineffective. Imagine the distance a medieval arrow could travel. It cannot be more than 100-150 meters. If they shoot from up above the mountain, which was probably 200-300 meters tall at the time, could easily miss targets. If Quraish outnumbered Muslims 4 to 1, a moderate effort of a few hundred men to overpower the archers sitting high above the mountain would never be much of a trouble. If the archers were, however, protecting a narrow pass of 20-30 meter width, it could totally be a different story. But the problem here is that if there was a pass that narrow, it could easily be visible even if we consider the erosion of Jabal alainain for the last 1500 years. Also, if the Quraish army had already fled the battlefield, it would mean that Khalid probably was not able to see what was happening on top of Jabal al ainain. I have a totally different theory about what happened on the battlefield.
We have to remember Muslims were only 700 men strong. They were facing an enemy, which was four times their size. So, Muslims wisely chose a battlefield, which could compensate for their disadvantage in number. The Muslim army was facing Medina, and the mountain of Uhud was at their back. There was also a small hill on the left flank of the Muslim army. Muslims also had Uhud on their right side. By choosing such a narrow space to fight Quraish, Muslims wanted to undo the advantage of the Quraish that came with their number. It also meant a flanking charge by the Quraish was not possible. But the problem was the opening between Jabal al-ainain and Uhud, and thus our Prophet placed fifty archers on the left flank somewhere close to Jabal al ainain. He could not have done any better considering he had only 700 fighting men. So fifty means he had to place almost 10% of his men to protect the vulnerable position. His camp was not too far from the archers as well. As we can see from Yasir Qadhi's video here, the archers were probably in full view of the Prophet. So those fifty archers were meant to stop a flanking movement by the Quraish and to allow our Prophet enough time to send a reinforcement in case a breach had been made. The problem of this placement of the Muslim army was that they confined themselves in a narrow space. If Muslims retreated, they would have been crushed between the mountain and the advancing Quraish army. If Muslims, on the other hand, pursue the retreating Quraishi army, they would lose the advantageous position they had. They'd suddenly find themselves in open space against a much larger foe. We know from the Quran and the seerah that Muslims did have an initial success against the Quraishi army. I, therefore, propose that when the main Muslim army saw the Quraishi army retreating, they started pursuing them and lost their advantageous position. The Muslim army lost the cohesion and suddenly found themselves surrounded. At that opportune moment, Khalid charged the right flank with his cavalry contingent. Thus far, Khalid was unaware that only fifty men were actually protecting this position. So he charged repeatedly, and eventually, most of the archers were either killed or fled the battlefield. It was all happening in front of the eyes of our Prophet, and the Prophet quickly realized the danger. He shouted to the main Muslim army to fall back to their original position. Muslims were in complete disarray. You can easily imagine the chaos the medieval wars had. When the advancing Muslim army saw Khalid's horsemen in their camp, they realized that they've lost the battle. Many thought that if they return to their original position, it would mean a massacre as they'd be crushed between the Main Quraish army and Khalid's cavalry. Many fled the battlefield sensibly, and many ran towards the Prophet, realizing his life was in danger. That's why we find a very few people with the Prophet who took shelter in the mountain of Uhud.
It's a theory, and we can always reinterpret the events in the light of authentic reports. I wish Muslim military researchers would do research on essential battles that were fought by the Muslims, including Badr, Uhud, Yarmouk. Muslim sources have recorded many eye witness accounts of these battles, but ironically no one ever tried to do real research that synthesizes authentic reports with facts. Many ancient battles, which have even less reliable reports, have been recreated by the researchers, and we, Muslims, know nothing but few snippets from Sahaba and the stories of the historians.
