I have this tent and love it! NOT YOUR AVERAGE WALMART TENT. Colorado elk hunts in snow with a wood stove is heaven. Great ventilation for spring and summer camping. Zero leaks ever and tested it in a tropical storm with 50MPH winds. I did make new stronger stakes. The material is very heavy duty and not thin but not cotton canvas. SERIOUSLY thinking about buying the new larger one.
I love it too! I don’t really need anything that will “last a lifetime” as we are building a cabin right next to this deck. But this will do the trick for the next year!
Picked up the same tent two years ago as a cheap-er way to see if we wanted to invest in a canvas wall tent for deer season, and two seasons later it's still here. Zero complaints for the price.

Nice job. If you're going to be building, dig the house into the hill and make sure that its longest wall faces due south. This will allow you to build passive solar. I built my house into a hill, oriented it to face due south, super insulated it, and put most glass facing south(not low E). It was working great when we got 30 sunny days per winter. Now that we only get about 12, I have to burn wood for backup. Tractor Supply Company usually sells the Shelter Logic 12' x 20' x 8' round top tent garage for $400 on black Friday. I bought a bunch of concrete curing blankets to cover mine to insulate it. To protect the blankets, I put a 20' x 30' extra heavy duty tarp over the top and the dead end. When I get to it, I'll build a frame and plywood end to replace the canvass door end. I can then put a stove pipe through the wood wall and heat with wood. Building a house takes longer and costs more than originally planned. My house took 11 years before we could move in. Just keep working at it. If the money gets tight work on the projects that take time but not much money. I regret not putting in fruit and nut trees when we first started. They'd be mature and producing now. Good Luck, Rick
Good Review. I had the same Ozark tent from Walmart worked great never leaked. My son wanted to have his own space and camp so we set it up in the backyard between 2 trees and it stayed there for 2 years. Never had an issue with it, I just would retighten the guide lines. However, after two years of being set up a couple of storms back to back took it out. Again it never leaked, very impressive. The joints on the frame gave out during the storm which caused the failure. The tent seems never failed and its no fault of the manufacturer especially being set up 2 years straight, got our money worth out of it and will be getting another of the same tent.
So I've been in the Army for a day or two. Your correct about the corners they could be a problem long term. Also, a problem with putting your tent up on a deck is the temperature on the floor. Its critical the floor be on the ground to keep the heat in when its cold. Love your interior setup. If you really want to keep the area cool in the summer, I recommend putting up a thermal fly or camo net a 8 inches or more above the roof. Having two roofs does will drastically reduce the temperature from the sun. Just my 2 cents thou.
Thanks for that boss! My schedule this summer into the fall is trash so I won't be going back up until October I think. But it is still warm then during the day. I actually have an old (30+ years) Ozark Trail 3person camp tent, which is still in great shape! I also have a very well made (and not cheap) canvas wall tent, and I spoke with the manufacturer recently, they said their metal and canvas prices had skyrocketed, so of course, so had their tent prices! So this might be a good option for a lot of folks!
Bought this same tent for first year hot tent camping along with the Alpine chef wood stove, nice tent, slept 5 with matresses and the stove heated it well although had to get up every few hours to stoke the stove. was a good investment.
I was going to buy the alpine chef stove but they just started selling this other one through tractor supply that will be good to transfer over to the cabin once we build the cabin. Couldn’t get it in time for this trip and now it’s turning into summer so not sure I’ll get a stove until later this year.

I have the same tent. I've had it for about two years. It's a great tent. I don't use a stove. I use heater in the winter. It's used at state campgrounds in Georgia. I had it out in December 2022 in 17-degree weather. In addition, I use carpet on top of the floor. I think the tent is a good investment. I purchased a large tarp to use as a rain fly.
I do exactly the same as you! I put a mexican blanket down on the floor to trap dirt and keep it a little warmer, and I use a propane heater. I will be picking up a wood stove this fall for the winter season, from Northwoods Fabrication, nice enough that once we build the cabin we can use it in there. Once this cabin is built, I am going to build another deck further up the road to rent out and I'm going to make a few modifications to the tent frame and use a tarp rain fly to leave the tent up permanently. This thing has been well worth the money, wish I had caught it on sale for $250 a couple months ago, that was a steal!
I have this tent it’s great and withstands quite a bit of wind and weather. I got a Stansport 16x12 desert camo tarp for a fly to protect and help the roof last. Light color matches and doesn’t make it dark inside.
Mice will come in if you don't use some mice deterrent. They hate peppermint smell. You can spray that around the outside of your tent on your boards. That should help keep the mice out of your tent.. Thanks for doing a you tube on this tent. I was looking at this tent to buy. Thank you.☺️
Sweet and thorough review. I didn't know Wallies/OT made a canvas tent. I picked up their version of a spring bar tent a few years back and happy I did, because they only made it that one year. Cute doggo 🐶♥️
So it says “canvas” but it’s really more like rip stop nylon, like if you have ever seen a pair of 5.11 pants or Columbia pants it’s like that material. I love it. It won’t last as long as true canvas but I don’t need it to, only need this for a year.
I own two of these tents and man o man the value that they bring is phenomenal! I have owned my tents for just over 2 years and it can be rather big when you are transporting it yet the layout when it's set up is simply second to none. I think that three adults with the stove inside the tent is probably your best bet. If you are not going to set up a stove inside the tent then you can easily rest 4 adults. I wouldn't look to do more than 4 adults without sacrificing space and comfortability (but then again I am 6'5 275LBS and my children aren't exactly little lol). If they are still on the market and you are looking for a wall tent, BUY IT!
Solid info right there! If I don't have the cabin built by the winter then I will get a stove for sure. Back in February when I went up it went down to 30 and I just had the propane heater on low and it worked fine for me. Yeah I'm 6-4 and 220. Just went up last weekend with a buddy little bigger than me...just the two of us and our gear and 3 dogs was enough! But really...said it again on the video I put up today...really amazed and impressed by this tent every time I use it! Thanks for watching brother!
I lived in mine. For three months straight in the coastal plains of the Southeast. And every Monday - Thursday in north central Idaho for just over a year. Mine was the first version without the stove jack so I installed my own. I love the tent and still own it. The door zipper has blown out, but other than that it is great.
I have found with canvas tents that if you spray them down with a good water sealer for wood it helps to preserve the canvas for years. I did that with my teepee and it last 7 years

Put some pool noodles in corners and rain won’t pool and droop. Can put a vent flap on top vents, but you do want circulation. Put plastic sheets on floor and then get rubber flooring for more insulation. Great video. Thank you for the info and video. Best of luck to you with your cabin. 👍👍👍
For the bottom, we would sew in two or more feet of tarp all around (it does gives you the option of having it higher as well). We would then tuck the tarp in and lay rocks or logs to secure it in place, it's a lot better than stakes in the ground.
Yeah this tent is great! I have a firebox from cabelas. This thing gets warm. Used it last year when we went elk hunting in chama new mexico! Me and my son stayed in here. It good enough for 2 maybe 3 people. This held up against the wind that hit us from a canyon below. I staked it down not using the hardware included. Best decision ever!
It has worked really well for me. Shockingly well. I really love this tent. Doing some new videos all about the floor and other features that in this video may seem not so great but really ended up being awesome. I want to get a "survivor grizzly" stove, seems the perfect size, and then when we build the cabin we can transfer it to the cabin. Thanks for watching.

I don’t know about tents but we have an Ozark Cooler that we broke the latch on when it was 20 below. We called Ozark trail to order a replacement and they sent it right away ….no charge. Not a brand I am afraid of.

If you have to refresh the waterproofing, spray it with Thompsens Water Seal. Yes that is correct. Soak it and let it dry. The canvas will stay pliable. My 30 yr old canvas tent still sheds water with no leaks, smells fresh yet and has a lot of life left in it. An old camel 9x12 cabin tent.
Thompsens is great on canvas.. Since this tent looks like coated ripstop, test it first to see that the distillates in Thompsens does not wreck the factory waterproofing underlayer. I have not used it on my other tents of the nylon or polyester type construction.

I REALLY wanted to make a better deck build video, but when I first built it I was on a serious time crunch with the sunset so I just hauled ass and built as fast as I could without doing any video. My son bought a Walmart Ozark trail tent , on the first breezy day one of the fiberglass supports broke and about a week later the zipper broke. Then on another breezy day the top vinyl cover had a tear in it . In my view Walmart tents are junk. Unfortunately he lost the receipt to return it . So he bought another brand tent that was good.
Thanks for watching, glad the videos helped! So I am 6 foot 4 inches, and I've got a few inches to the top of the peak. I think the top of the wall on the sides is right about 6 feet, maybe a couple inches less, and the peak has to be 6-8 to 6-10.

Generally speaking , I have found that the nylon material tends to disintegrate due to Sunshine UV, particularly with inexpensive brands such as Ozark Trail brand tents. I have, in my career, cleaned-out hundreds of Homeless encampments...rotted tents by the score. Temporary shelter, ok, but within weeks it would require additional Tarp coverage and rigging.

I’m betting Walmart ordered a couple thousand of them and now they’re sitting on a pile of them so they had to drop the price. I’ve got an Ozark trail 4person tent that I bought 10 years ago…..it’s been at a camp on our property by one of our ponds for the last 4 of those years……standing in all weather and still doing fine……..when it’s finally replaced,it will be with another Ozark Trail…
Four years is crazy! I think you may be the highest number I've had comment on here. I've had a few two year and I think one guy with it up for three years. Once we build the cabin I am building a second deck further up the mountain and I am going to place this tent on it to rent out and I am leaving it up to see how long it really lasts.

I built the first section of deck almost in the dark, I have another video of it. I’ve built quite a few decks but forgot one piece of bracing and had to fix it on the next trip. Last trip we built an extension so now the tent faces out to the view of the mountains and we have a seating and fire pit area. Again we were racing against daylight on that one so I didn’t get any video. Next trip I’ll get a detailed video of the materials and construction.
For warmer climates (where you'll never need to put in a stove), I'd look at the EZ up cube, or 'standing room' tent. Ozark also makes an equivalent. They're all 2 pieces: the 4 leg gazebo top, and then a cube that attaches to it, so you have a 10'x10' room. Some of them have little velcro flap areas for putting in an a/c unit.
The flaps are called sod panels. They were put in trenches cut out around the tent. It was used by the settlers to keep wind and snow out. You can still do it now.
YUP! Learned this last year from another person with a similar comment, I had no clue! I did some more research on this and actually put that into a couple of my other videos. And I found if you fold that sod cloth UNDER the floor...ZERO draft! Made winter a lot better in this tent!
Nice review. But I think what you should do is an update review after a good rain storm. No matter how “Good” a tent looks, it’s ability to keep the interior dry is the most important aspect of a shelter.
Agree 100%. Only problem is I try to plan my trips around the weather so if it’s going to storm I just don’t go to camp…but I’m sure I will get caught in a good one at some point! Will for sure do an update video later this year.
@@bfroutdoors you may want to rethink that policy. Personally, I enjoy hiking in the rain for several reasons. No one else is out there. Almost guaranteed to be by yourself. The amazing colors. Everything is so vibrant when it rains. The relaxing, almost therapeutic sound of rain makes you feel so peaceful. And the last but most important bonus to hiking in the rain, NO BUGS!!!! All them nasty, biting, annoying critters hunker down for the rain. Leaving you to enjoy the outdoors to the maximum. Something to ponder about….

Yeah this was the selling point for me. Although this past winter I just used a propane heater, this coming winter I’ll have a wood stove. I have a feeling I’ll need to spend one more winter in the tent while I build the cabin. And then I’ll just transfer the wood stove to the cabin.
I 💯 agree. These things aren't cheap. I've had a few tents and none of the held up in East Coast canadian winters. Had no idea walmart sold something like this.
I am tempted to buy 2 or 3 of them and sell them on ebay with shipping to Canada, I have had several people message me and say they cannot get them shipped to Canada from Walmart!
Great review thanks. Yea, seems like Ozark trail items are above average in their camping gear equipment, I have other items by this company but not this tent, not yet anyway. And would definitely buy if I needed a tent that size. My current tent is the Ozark trail 2 person tent, works great and I did get it used so I did a complete seam sealer and a few coats of Kiwi water repellent spray. Very durable.thanks again.
I own many other Ozark trail items and all are just as good as most items you would buy at REI. Not sure who is running this department of Walmart but somehow these products are better than most people think they would be.
I can tell you that the canvas is snug. I cut the pins along one side that slip in the bottom of the poles by about half. It’s still snug but a lot easier.
Nice review. We have this tent as well it's not bad for the money. We went winter camping in it in NH and it did very well. I will agree though they could have done better on the floor either more Velcro or better yet a zippered floor would have been a lot better. And my door does the same I don't know why it doesn't go all the way down but it is what it is for 400 bucks. It fit 4 of us in it with our gear so we were happy.
Agree for the money it’s great. Have you been using a stove? I’m wondering how high of a pipe I need to make sure sparks don’t come back down and melt little holes in the tent.
@@bfroutdoors we went about 2 to 3 feet above the tent but we used a spark arrestor. I highly recommend using one plus the stove we have has a baffle in it which helps a lot to. It's the fltom on Amazon some people made videos of it good and bad mostly on the paint. But if you heat it slow at first for a couple hours then let it cool it seems to hold.
That is effing sweet! Never heard of this tent. I got a canvas Trek tent 15 years ago 10 x 14 I believe. The just recently stopped making them. I was like crap crap crap! Mine is still alright but it's starting to get older and I was always thinking I could get another one if I needed to. Well this looks like it has great potential to be my tent in the future. Yeah, I'm not into a full outfitters tent but I like these type. My Trek has been through a few giant snow storms and has never failed. It snowed 36" pretty much overnight one time and made it through. I'm currently at the floor section of your video. I really like the floor of the Trek. It's some kind of PVC or something. It's super tough and strong, hasn't degraded in anyway over 15 years. Mine doesn't have a stove jack but it is something I was always going to add. I have the zippered floor for it because I added that for ice fishing several years ago. I really like the internal poles that is awesome! My Trek has exterior poles but looks like it's set up for interior, I may custom make some for it some day if I don't purchase this tent in the future.
If you got 15 years out of that tent it was worth every dollar you paid for it! And for $500 this one is good for me and my use. If I wanted something to last another 15 years I would spend the money and get a legit canvas wall tent. But for me I only need this to last about a year or two while I build the cabin. If you are on flat ground and get to the campsite yeah you are right! There is even a way to let the front flap of the floor lay flat at the doorway so it would be even easier to roll in and out. Thanks for watching!
Nice tent! I was thinking of making one about the size out of canvas tarps but at that price its hardly worth doing. Those metal frames look pretty weak mainly for temp camping. If you wanted a permanent setup or longterm then heavier pipes or woodframe might be your best bet. Definitely a protective cover as well for UV protection ( there are coatings that help too) as well as rain and sun shade. Definately a good investment.
Once we get the cabin built we will end up building a second deck further up the mountain to rent out both camps and I will probably get a nice white duck canvas tent. For now this is holding up ok. I will need to spray this for the winter, a waterproof coating and an anti-fungal coating. But throwing a tarp over helps a ton.
If we had sub zero temps and a good amount of snow, I would opt for something thicker and sturdier as far as the tent goes. Our night time cold in the winter is 20-35F...and even in the winter it usually warms up to over 40 during the day. And we only get a few light snows even up in the mountains. And I have discovered there are two features about the floor and side walls that are actually really useful and are meant to close it in and not be so open like I depicted here, doing another video on that on my next trip. Is a really great tent. And you thought right I left mine up the whole winter and the roof poles caved in. My fault a great tent I should have added a center pole. Never ever leaked and the grass was green when I finally removed it
I was soooooo tempted to leave it up! Glad I didn’t! But yeah I think with a couple 2x6 braces and extra poles it could stay up for a long time. If I was going up to camp every weekend I’d find a way to leave it up.
So what I'm seeing of the material and how the thing is built the old tent of the day we're better than what they're selling steel yet today. The 10th that I've had since I was a kid is a heavy canvas with a good heavy rubberized bottom. And if I remember right my parents bought it at Kmart
That's a good question, but several people who have had these up for more than a year or two have told me you just need to spray it with a waterproofer like Thompson's and an anti fungal if you're in a place like I am that is very humid all year round. Putting an extra rain fly tarp over the top of it also helps immensely as it also gives it some shade from the sun so it doesn't dry rot.

Yes. It will be tight. You will have to store most of your gear under the cots. But I think it is doable. My cot is an XL for people over 6 foot, I fit two of those plus two 2x4 foot tables and still had a little walkway. I haven't setup a wood stove yet, just been using my little buddy propane stove. Hey don't forget one of those little thermo-electric fans for the top of the stove! They work great for spreading the heat. I think people underestimate the value of Walmart tents because I bought a 10' pop up tent and I've kind of abused it and it has never leaked in 2 and a 1/2 years of being up almost all the time.

Kenny, thanks for watching, no issues here for me. I have used this tent 6 or 7 times now, I have posted two other videos about the minor "issues" and also a time lapse on the setup time for one person. The removable floor is not a problem and the gaps are not a problem if you figure out how to deal with them (I go over it in the other video). Basically the tent sides have extra fabric at the bottom for you to put some logs or sandbags on to keep it sealed to the ground. I have not had any issues with insects or critters coming in, and I have not had any issues with waterproofing or rain. As a couple others have said, if you are going to put this tent up long term, I would re-enforce the top center pole with at least a 2x4 or larger 2" galvanized electrical conduit and a center pole in the front and back to support the center beam. I would also highly suggest putting an extra tarp over the top with a 6" to 12" gap between that tarp and the tent, it will protect against major rain and snow buildup and big thing it will shade the tent so it doesn't get too hot during the day. But again, really, no issues I love it. Several people in the comments have had these tents up for months at a time, one guy said his brother has one up in Alaska has been up for over a year! I camped in those too! If you setup your poles and measure the whole thing, you can find a canvas tent to cover the frame. Many companies offer canvas and pole kits separately.
coat it with some uv/waterseal when it is new , it will last you a lot longer , you can probable just get a sprayer and a gallon of Thompsons WS and just spray it on while it is up , make sure you get the proper stuff for the material
It says it is waterproof. We had a little light rain and I didn’t see any leaks. Haven’t tested in heavy rain but so far with sprinkles it is nice and dry!
Canvas is usually pretty waterproof, especially if you treat it with a silicone spray. You know how tents are though, nothing is completely waterproof. A giant downpour for days on end or if you touch the inside while it is drenched in water, you know.
@@dannydenham8141 please don't use poison, it doesn't kill immediately and poisoned rodents will potentially poison anything that eats them... owls, eagles, coyotes, etc It's better to have a sealed tent with battery operated or old school mouse/rat traps and zapper traps.
So the black rubber floor you see in the video is included with the tent and is the floor. I usually only go out for 3 days and I set it up by myself. Next trip I am making a setup video so everyone can see how long it takes. It's not bad, maybe ten minutes at most, now I've done it a three times I bet I can get it closer to five minutes setup time. The problem is the weight. It's 90 pounds with the top and bottom and poles and carrying bag. The bag has wheels but if you are on uneven surfaces or a hillside like me it is a pain to move. If you have two people it's easy. If you can just drive into your campsite and pull it out of your vehicle and set it up a few feet from where you parked it isn't bad at all. It's tall enough for me and I'm over six foot, and it has held up great for me. My very first trip with it, I took the poles out and put them up on the deck, then I pulled the top out, set it up, then went back down to my truck and got the bottom and brought that up, just made three trips down to my truck. I have seriously considered doing exactly the same. We are indeed building a cabin right next to the deck. We just built an 8 foot extension on the front of the deck so now the tent door faces out towards the view. Cabin will go to the left of the deck. But I have considered building a roof over where the tent is now and keeping that roof over the deck once the cabin is done. For me this tent has worked out really great, I didn't need a $1,200-$,2000 canvas wall tent, once I build the cabin this tent may not ever get used ever again. Thanks for watching!

This may seem like a naive question but are you using your propane stove where it's at? i always thought you had to run them outside of the tent because of the heat.
Nope it is the same fabric. It isn't real canvas. It is more like ripstop nylon...if you have ever had a pair of 5.11 pants or columbia or under armor tactical pants it's just like that fabric. I have not sprayed it with waterproofing yet but we had a little drizzle on the last trip and it didn't leak a drop.
It’s just under 100 pounds. I think the website and the box said 90. The bag has wheels so you can drag it. But dragging it through the woods on an uneven trail those wheels really don’t help. Highly suggest carrying with two people.
Sorry for that those tents are pretty good tents from Walmart 10x12 tent as for the vents all you have to do is go get sticky on Velcro and put that on there and cut you a piece of canvas and do the same to cover up the vents I went with a 4 m bell tent in which I paid 639 for it's a canvas Bell TV tent we've had some heavy rains here in South Carolina and it's held up well and never leaked it's 105 ft on the inside

Someone else suggested moth balls or dryer sheets to keep them away. The tent is really just temporary while we build the cabin so I am hoping we don't have to deal with any critter problems.

I have this tent and love it! NOT YOUR AVERAGE WALMART TENT. Colorado elk hunts in snow with a wood stove is heaven. Great ventilation for spring and summer camping. Zero leaks ever and tested it in a tropical storm with 50MPH winds. I did make new stronger stakes. The material is very heavy duty and not thin but not cotton canvas. SERIOUSLY thinking about buying the new larger one.

Nice job. If you're going to be building, dig the house into the hill and make sure that its longest wall faces due south. This will allow you to build passive solar. I built my house into a hill, oriented it to face due south, super insulated it, and put most glass facing south(not low E). It was working great when we got 30 sunny days per winter. Now that we only get about 12, I have to burn wood for backup.
Tractor Supply Company usually sells the Shelter Logic 12' x 20' x 8' round top tent garage for $400 on black Friday. I bought a bunch of concrete curing blankets to cover mine to insulate it. To protect the blankets, I put a 20' x 30' extra heavy duty tarp over the top and the dead end. When I get to it, I'll build a frame and plywood end to replace the canvass door end. I can then put a stove pipe through the wood wall and heat with wood. Building a house takes longer and costs more than originally planned. My house took 11 years before we could move in. Just keep working at it. If the money gets tight work on the projects that take time but not much money. I regret not putting in fruit and nut trees when we first started. They'd be mature and producing now. Good Luck, Rick

Good Review. I had the same Ozark tent from Walmart worked great never leaked. My son wanted to have his own space and camp so we set it up in the backyard between 2 trees and it stayed there for 2 years. Never had an issue with it, I just would retighten the guide lines. However, after two years of being set up a couple of storms back to back took it out. Again it never leaked, very impressive. The joints on the frame gave out during the storm which caused the failure. The tent seems never failed and its no fault of the manufacturer especially being set up 2 years straight, got our money worth out of it and will be getting another of the same tent.
Two years?! That’s crazy! Yeah I never would have thought this thing would be as nice as it is or I would like it as much as I do!
So I've been in the Army for a day or two. Your correct about the corners they could be a problem long term. Also, a problem with putting your tent up on a deck is the temperature on the floor. Its critical the floor be on the ground to keep the heat in when its cold. Love your interior setup. If you really want to keep the area cool in the summer, I recommend putting up a thermal fly or camo net a 8 inches or more above the roof. Having two roofs does will drastically reduce the temperature from the sun. Just my 2 cents thou.

I actually have an old (30+ years) Ozark Trail 3person camp tent, which is still in great shape! I also have a very well made (and not cheap) canvas wall tent, and I spoke with the manufacturer recently, they said their metal and canvas prices had skyrocketed, so of course, so had their tent prices! So this might be a good option for a lot of folks!
No matter what you paid for that tent...30 years of use it has paid for itself!
Bought this same tent for first year hot tent camping along with the Alpine chef wood stove, nice tent, slept 5 with matresses
and the stove heated it well although had to get up every few hours to stoke the stove. was a good investment.
I was going to buy the alpine chef stove but they just started selling this other one through tractor supply that will be good to transfer over to the cabin once we build the cabin. Couldn’t get it in time for this trip and now it’s turning into summer so not sure I’ll get a stove until later this year.

I have the same tent. I've had it for about two years. It's a great tent. I don't use a stove. I use heater in the winter. It's used at state campgrounds in Georgia. I had it out in December 2022 in 17-degree weather. In addition, I use carpet on top of the floor. I think the tent is a good investment. I purchased a large tarp to use as a rain fly.
I do exactly the same as you! I put a mexican blanket down on the floor to trap dirt and keep it a little warmer, and I use a propane heater. I will be picking up a wood stove this fall for the winter season, from Northwoods Fabrication, nice enough that once we build the cabin we can use it in there. Once this cabin is built, I am going to build another deck further up the road to rent out and I'm going to make a few modifications to the tent frame and use a tarp rain fly to leave the tent up permanently. This thing has been well worth the money, wish I had caught it on sale for $250 a couple months ago, that was a steal!
I have this tent it’s great and withstands quite a bit of wind and weather. I got a Stansport 16x12 desert camo tarp for a fly to protect and help the roof last. Light color matches and doesn’t make it dark inside.
Yeah I want to get a fly for it. I got a tarp for this trip but had to use it for something else.
Mice will come in if you don't use some mice deterrent. They hate peppermint smell. You can spray that around the outside of your tent on your boards. That should help keep the mice out of your tent.. Thanks for doing a you tube on this tent. I was looking at this tent to buy. Thank you.☺️

Sweet and thorough review. I didn't know Wallies/OT made a canvas tent. I picked up their version of a spring bar tent a few years back and happy I did, because they only made it that one year. Cute doggo 🐶♥️
So it says “canvas” but it’s really more like rip stop nylon, like if you have ever seen a pair of 5.11 pants or Columbia pants it’s like that material. I love it. It won’t last as long as true canvas but I don’t need it to, only need this for a year.
My cousin lived in it over the winter here in Alaska. He loved it with his little wood stove.

I own two of these tents and man o man the value that they bring is phenomenal! I have owned my tents for just over 2 years and it can be rather big when you are transporting it yet the layout when it's set up is simply second to none. I think that three adults with the stove inside the tent is probably your best bet. If you are not going to set up a stove inside the tent then you can easily rest 4 adults. I wouldn't look to do more than 4 adults without sacrificing space and comfortability (but then again I am 6'5 275LBS and my children aren't exactly little lol). If they are still on the market and you are looking for a wall tent, BUY IT!
Solid info right there! If I don't have the cabin built by the winter then I will get a stove for sure. Back in February when I went up it went down to 30 and I just had the propane heater on low and it worked fine for me. Yeah I'm 6-4 and 220. Just went up last weekend with a buddy little bigger than me...just the two of us and our gear and 3 dogs was enough! But really...said it again on the video I put up today...really amazed and impressed by this tent every time I use it! Thanks for watching brother!
I lived in mine. For three months straight in the coastal plains of the Southeast. And every Monday - Thursday in north central Idaho for just over a year. Mine was the first version without the stove jack so I installed my own. I love the tent and still own it. The door zipper has blown out, but other than that it is great.

I have found with canvas tents that if you spray them down with a good water sealer for wood it helps to preserve the canvas for years. I did that with my teepee and it last 7 years

Put some pool noodles in corners and rain won’t pool and droop. Can put a vent flap on top vents, but you do want circulation. Put plastic sheets on floor and then get rubber flooring for more insulation. Great video. Thank you for the info and video. Best of luck to you with your cabin. 👍👍👍

For the bottom, we would sew in two or more feet of tarp all around (it does gives you the option of having it higher as well). We would then tuck the tarp in and lay rocks or logs to secure it in place, it's a lot better than stakes in the ground.

Yeah this tent is great! I have a firebox from cabelas. This thing gets warm. Used it last year when we went elk hunting in chama new mexico! Me and my son stayed in here. It good enough for 2 maybe 3 people. This held up against the wind that hit us from a canyon below. I staked it down not using the hardware included. Best decision ever!
It has worked really well for me. Shockingly well. I really love this tent. Doing some new videos all about the floor and other features that in this video may seem not so great but really ended up being awesome. I want to get a "survivor grizzly" stove, seems the perfect size, and then when we build the cabin we can transfer it to the cabin. Thanks for watching.

I don’t know about tents but we have an Ozark Cooler that we broke the latch on when it was 20 below. We called Ozark trail to order a replacement and they sent it right away ….no charge. Not a brand I am afraid of.

If you have to refresh the waterproofing, spray it with Thompsens Water Seal. Yes that is correct. Soak it and let it dry. The canvas will stay pliable. My 30 yr old canvas tent still sheds water with no leaks, smells fresh yet and has a lot of life left in it. An old camel 9x12 cabin tent.
Thompsens is great on canvas.. Since this tent looks like coated ripstop, test it first to see that the distillates in Thompsens does not wreck the factory waterproofing underlayer. I have not used it on my other tents of the nylon or polyester type construction.

My son bought a Walmart Ozark trail tent , on the first breezy day one of the fiberglass supports broke and about a week later the zipper broke. Then on another breezy day the top vinyl cover had a tear in it . In my view Walmart tents are junk. Unfortunately he lost the receipt to return it . So he bought another brand tent that was good.

Thanks for watching, glad the videos helped! So I am 6 foot 4 inches, and I've got a few inches to the top of the peak. I think the top of the wall on the sides is right about 6 feet, maybe a couple inches less, and the peak has to be 6-8 to 6-10.

Generally speaking , I have found that the nylon material tends to disintegrate due to Sunshine UV, particularly with inexpensive brands such as Ozark Trail brand tents. I have, in my career, cleaned-out hundreds of Homeless encampments...rotted tents by the score. Temporary shelter, ok, but within weeks it would require additional Tarp coverage and rigging.

I’ve got an Ozark trail 4person tent that I bought 10 years ago…..it’s been at a camp on our property by one of our ponds for the last 4 of those years……standing in all weather and still doing fine……..when it’s finally replaced,it will be with another Ozark Trail…
Four years is crazy! I think you may be the highest number I've had comment on here. I've had a few two year and I think one guy with it up for three years. Once we build the cabin I am building a second deck further up the mountain and I am going to place this tent on it to rent out and I am leaving it up to see how long it really lasts.

I built the first section of deck almost in the dark, I have another video of it. I’ve built quite a few decks but forgot one piece of bracing and had to fix it on the next trip. Last trip we built an extension so now the tent faces out to the view of the mountains and we have a seating and fire pit area. Again we were racing against daylight on that one so I didn’t get any video. Next trip I’ll get a detailed video of the materials and construction.
Ozark Trail is awesome when you're on a budget. I use a lot of their fishing gear.

If I were in FL I would be shopping for a portable AC!
For warmer climates (where you'll never need to put in a stove), I'd look at the EZ up cube, or 'standing room' tent. Ozark also makes an equivalent. They're all 2 pieces: the 4 leg gazebo top, and then a cube that attaches to it, so you have a 10'x10' room. Some of them have little velcro flap areas for putting in an a/c unit.
The flaps are called sod panels. They were put in trenches cut out around the tent. It was used by the settlers to keep wind and snow out. You can still do it now.
YUP! Learned this last year from another person with a similar comment, I had no clue! I did some more research on this and actually put that into a couple of my other videos. And I found if you fold that sod cloth UNDER the floor...ZERO draft! Made winter a lot better in this tent!
Nice review. But I think what you should do is an update review after a good rain storm. No matter how “Good” a tent looks, it’s ability to keep the interior dry is the most important aspect of a shelter.
Agree 100%. Only problem is I try to plan my trips around the weather so if it’s going to storm I just don’t go to camp…but I’m sure I will get caught in a good one at some point! Will for sure do an update video later this year.
@@bfroutdoors you may want to rethink that policy. Personally, I enjoy hiking in the rain for several reasons. No one else is out there. Almost guaranteed to be by yourself. The amazing colors. Everything is so vibrant when it rains. The relaxing, almost therapeutic sound of rain makes you feel so peaceful. And the last but most important bonus to hiking in the rain, NO BUGS!!!! All them nasty, biting, annoying critters hunker down for the rain. Leaving you to enjoy the outdoors to the maximum. Something to ponder about….

Yeah this was the selling point for me. Although this past winter I just used a propane heater, this coming winter I’ll have a wood stove. I have a feeling I’ll need to spend one more winter in the tent while I build the cabin. And then I’ll just transfer the wood stove to the cabin.

I 💯 agree. These things aren't cheap. I've had a few tents and none of the held up in East Coast canadian winters. Had no idea walmart sold something like this.
I am tempted to buy 2 or 3 of them and sell them on ebay with shipping to Canada, I have had several people message me and say they cannot get them shipped to Canada from Walmart!
Great review thanks. Yea, seems like Ozark trail items are above average in their camping gear equipment, I have other items by this company but not this tent, not yet anyway. And would definitely buy if I needed a tent that size. My current tent is the Ozark trail 2 person tent, works great and I did get it used so I did a complete seam sealer and a few coats of Kiwi water repellent spray. Very durable.thanks again.
I own many other Ozark trail items and all are just as good as most items you would buy at REI. Not sure who is running this department of Walmart but somehow these products are better than most people think they would be.
I wish you had spoken more about the construction of this tent, and how easily it sets up. Perhaps I'll find another review.

I can tell you that the canvas is snug. I cut the pins along one side that slip in the bottom of the poles by about half. It’s still snug but a lot easier.
Nice review. We have this tent as well it's not bad for the money. We went winter camping in it in NH and it did very well. I will agree though they could have done better on the floor either more Velcro or better yet a zippered floor would have been a lot better. And my door does the same I don't know why it doesn't go all the way down but it is what it is for 400 bucks. It fit 4 of us in it with our gear so we were happy.
Agree for the money it’s great. Have you been using a stove? I’m wondering how high of a pipe I need to make sure sparks don’t come back down and melt little holes in the tent.
@@bfroutdoors we went about 2 to 3 feet above the tent but we used a spark arrestor. I highly recommend using one plus the stove we have has a baffle in it which helps a lot to. It's the fltom on Amazon some people made videos of it good and bad mostly on the paint. But if you heat it slow at first for a couple hours then let it cool it seems to hold.
That is effing sweet! Never heard of this tent. I got a canvas Trek tent 15 years ago 10 x 14 I believe. The just recently stopped making them. I was like crap crap crap! Mine is still alright but it's starting to get older and I was always thinking I could get another one if I needed to. Well this looks like it has great potential to be my tent in the future. Yeah, I'm not into a full outfitters tent but I like these type. My Trek has been through a few giant snow storms and has never failed. It snowed 36" pretty much overnight one time and made it through. I'm currently at the floor section of your video. I really like the floor of the Trek. It's some kind of PVC or something. It's super tough and strong, hasn't degraded in anyway over 15 years. Mine doesn't have a stove jack but it is something I was always going to add. I have the zippered floor for it because I added that for ice fishing several years ago. I really like the internal poles that is awesome! My Trek has exterior poles but looks like it's set up for interior, I may custom make some for it some day if I don't purchase this tent in the future.
If you got 15 years out of that tent it was worth every dollar you paid for it! And for $500 this one is good for me and my use. If I wanted something to last another 15 years I would spend the money and get a legit canvas wall tent. But for me I only need this to last about a year or two while I build the cabin. Nice tent! I was thinking of making one about the size out of canvas tarps but at that price its hardly worth doing.
Those metal frames look pretty weak mainly for temp camping.
If you wanted a permanent setup or longterm then heavier pipes or woodframe might be your best bet. Definitely a protective cover as well for UV protection ( there are coatings that help too) as well as rain and sun shade.
Definately a good investment.
Once we get the cabin built we will end up building a second deck further up the mountain to rent out both camps and I will probably get a nice white duck canvas tent. For now this is holding up ok. I will need to spray this for the winter, a waterproof coating and an anti-fungal coating. But throwing a tarp over helps a ton.

If we had sub zero temps and a good amount of snow, I would opt for something thicker and sturdier as far as the tent goes. Our night time cold in the winter is 20-35F...and even in the winter it usually warms up to over 40 during the day. And we only get a few light snows even up in the mountains. And I have discovered there are two features about the floor and side walls that are actually really useful and are meant to close it in and not be so open like I depicted here, doing another video on that on my next trip. Is a really great tent. And you thought right I left mine up the whole winter and the roof poles caved in. My fault a great tent I should have added a center pole. Never ever leaked and the grass was green when I finally removed it
I was soooooo tempted to leave it up! Glad I didn’t! But yeah I think with a couple 2x6 braces and extra poles it could stay up for a long time. If I was going up to camp every weekend I’d find a way to leave it up.

So what I'm seeing of the material and how the thing is built the old tent of the day we're better than what they're selling steel yet today. The 10th that I've had since I was a kid is a heavy canvas with a good heavy rubberized bottom. And if I remember right my parents bought it at Kmart

That's a good question, but several people who have had these up for more than a year or two have told me you just need to spray it with a waterproofer like Thompson's and an anti fungal if you're in a place like I am that is very humid all year round. Putting an extra rain fly tarp over the top of it also helps immensely as it also gives it some shade from the sun so it doesn't dry rot.

Yes. It will be tight. You will have to store most of your gear under the cots. But I think it is doable. My cot is an XL for people over 6 foot, I fit two of those plus two 2x4 foot tables and still had a little walkway. I haven't setup a wood stove yet, just been using my little buddy propane stove. Hey don't forget one of those little thermo-electric fans for the top of the stove! They work great for spreading the heat. I think people underestimate the value of Walmart tents because I bought a 10' pop up tent and I've kind of abused it and it has never leaked in 2 and a 1/2 years of being up almost all the time.

Kenny, thanks for watching, no issues here for me. I have used this tent 6 or 7 times now, I have posted two other videos about the minor "issues" and also a time lapse on the setup time for one person. The removable floor is not a problem and the gaps are not a problem if you figure out how to deal with them (I go over it in the other video). Basically the tent sides have extra fabric at the bottom for you to put some logs or sandbags on to keep it sealed to the ground. I have not had any issues with insects or critters coming in, and I have not had any issues with waterproofing or rain. As a couple others have said, if you are going to put this tent up long term, I would re-enforce the top center pole with at least a 2x4 or larger 2" galvanized electrical conduit and a center pole in the front and back to support the center beam. I would also highly suggest putting an extra tarp over the top with a 6" to 12" gap between that tarp and the tent, it will protect against major rain and snow buildup and big thing it will shade the tent so it doesn't get too hot during the day. But again, really, no issues I love it. Several people in the comments have had these tents up for months at a time, one guy said his brother has one up in Alaska has been up for over a year! I think 1 will get one for my future hunting trips, seems to be sturdy enough for just that purpose.
Weighs almost 100 pounds. But…the case has wheels you can drag it. I actually took it up in three parts, the poles, the top, and the floor.

I use to camp in one of these as a child… it was an old WWII Army canvas wall tent.
I found the poles… but the tent is long gone…
I camped in those too! If you setup your poles and measure the whole thing, you can find a canvas tent to cover the frame. Many companies offer canvas and pole kits separately.

coat it with some uv/waterseal when it is new , it will last you a lot longer , you can probable just get a sprayer and a gallon of Thompsons WS and just spray it on while it is up , make sure you get the proper stuff for the material

It says it is waterproof. We had a little light rain and I didn’t see any leaks. Haven’t tested in heavy rain but so far with sprinkles it is nice and dry!
Canvas is usually pretty waterproof, especially if you treat it with a silicone spray. You know how tents are though, nothing is completely waterproof. A giant downpour for days on end or if you touch the inside while it is drenched in water, you know.

This was the first time I set it up, took me about half an hour and I was going very slow, had to resort to actually looking at the directions, haha!

@@HarshmanHills Store things in plastic totes and put weights on lids and scatter poison around for mice and insects
@@dannydenham8141 please don't use poison, it doesn't kill immediately and poisoned rodents will potentially poison anything that eats them... owls, eagles, coyotes, etc
It's better to have a sealed tent with battery operated or old school mouse/rat traps and zapper traps.

Self-stick velcro will probably work to complete the gaps for the bucket floor!

Does it have a bottom or is that a tarp you used for the bottom? And would it be good to use weekend camping or to much set up and take down work
So the black rubber floor you see in the video is included with the tent and is the floor. I usually only go out for 3 days and I set it up by myself. Next trip I am making a setup video so everyone can see how long it takes. It's not bad, maybe ten minutes at most, now I've done it a three times I bet I can get it closer to five minutes setup time. The problem is the weight. It's 90 pounds with the top and bottom and poles and carrying bag. The bag has wheels but if you are on uneven surfaces or a hillside like me it is a pain to move. If you have two people it's easy. If you can just drive into your campsite and pull it out of your vehicle and set it up a few feet from where you parked it isn't bad at all. It's tall enough for me and I'm over six foot, and it has held up great for me. My very first trip with it, I took the poles out and put them up on the deck, then I pulled the top out, set it up, then went back down to my truck and got the bottom and brought that up, just made three trips down to my truck. I'm thinking of getting this tent for a mountain property but I will build a wood structure over it then maybe later when the tent is gone build it into a cabin or she'd
I have seriously considered doing exactly the same. We are indeed building a cabin right next to the deck. We just built an 8 foot extension on the front of the deck so now the tent door faces out towards the view. Cabin will go to the left of the deck. But I have considered building a roof over where the tent is now and keeping that roof over the deck once the cabin is done. For me this tent has worked out really great, I didn't need a $1,200-$,2000 canvas wall tent, once I build the cabin this tent may not ever get used ever again. Thanks for watching!

This may seem like a naive question but are you using your propane stove where it's at? i always thought you had to run them outside of the tent because of the heat.
Yes I am. Propane stove and propane heater. If you have enough air space it's fine. Would not recommend in a smaller tent.

Nope it is the same fabric. It isn't real canvas. It is more like ripstop nylon...if you have ever had a pair of 5.11 pants or columbia or under armor tactical pants it's just like that fabric. I have not sprayed it with waterproofing yet but we had a little drizzle on the last trip and it didn't leak a drop.

I wouldn't close those vents; I've winter camped enough to know you'd better have ventilation. it won't make too much of a difference in the heating
HA! On our last trip I was cooking breakfast and left the bacon in a couple seconds too long and I was very glad those vents were there!
Okay so how much does it weigh? Looks like a tarp material not canvas?
It’s just under 100 pounds. I think the website and the box said 90. The bag has wheels so you can drag it. But dragging it through the woods on an uneven trail those wheels really don’t help. Highly suggest carrying with two people.
Sorry for that those tents are pretty good tents from Walmart 10x12 tent as for the vents all you have to do is go get sticky on Velcro and put that on there and cut you a piece of canvas and do the same to cover up the vents I went with a 4 m bell tent in which I paid 639 for it's a canvas Bell TV tent we've had some heavy rains here in South Carolina and it's held up well and never leaked it's 105 ft on the inside

How is the velcro attached? Is it sewn in? Could two strips on each vent provide for a removeable cover over each of the ceiling vents?
Oh good call I could do a Velcro cover for the vents. The bottom ones are sewn on.

Yeah I’m not a fedex fan either. This came UPS to me. I think you can order it delivered to store for store pickup.
I live in the south. Snakes can get in with gaps in the floor the way it is.
Someone else suggested moth balls or dryer sheets to keep them away. The tent is really just temporary while we build the cabin so I am hoping we don't have to deal with any critter problems.
