- It's easy to imagine languages dying in remote parts of the world, but Sam Craft is a language activist in New Orleans fighting to keep French alive in his community.

Greetings from Israel. We revived the Hebrew language in the same land where it was used. We switched from Yiddish, Ladino and all the languages of the world to speaking, writing and working in our own ancestral language. Il faut avoir espoir, continuez chaque jour à utiliser le français en Louisiane!

J’adore le langue français! J’habite à Los Angeles... je suis pas ni cajun ni français mais j’ai décidé apprendre français quand j’étais jeune parce que j’ai tombé en amour avec le langue français. Malheureusement, j’ai arrêté apres 2 ans parce que le façon d’apprendre français à la lycée marche pas. Cependant, j’ai recommencé mon etudie l’année dernier et je suis très motivé pour arriver à parler français couramment.

Creole applied to anyone born into colonial Louisiana up til 1803! Therefore you have Choctaw-Creoles, German-Creoles, Italian-Creoles, Swiss-Creoles, Spanish-Creoles, Irish-Creoles, Spanish-Creole, Filipino-Creoles, Acadian-Creoles which are now called Cajuns! Being Creole has nothing to do with being Black, White or French or mixed!

I remember the movie Witness with Harisson Ford and Kelly Macgillys. Few words of german were spoken in that movie.
Also in Central Texas, some folks speak Texas German in areas near New Braunfels, but it's dying out. :(

It's fascinating that their commnunities (Créoles, Cajuns, even Québécois) survived in North America knowing the violent oppression towards French speakers in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Now at least Louisiana is claiming its past back.
I'm from Louisiana. My Mama was from Grand Isle, La. She and her cousins were the last generation to have spoken French fluently. I am SO happy to see someone revitalizing the language and our culture.

@Cajunrose yeah i only hear the older folk speak cajun french..not so much thr younger..in certain parts of Louisiana they teach French very early..
The true French remember their American brothers. Louis 15th forsook you and it was an unforgivable crime. If it was up to me to decide I'd grant you French citizenship right away and give you guys some land in the old country. Stay safe, brothers, n'oubliez jamais.

@@joshiyonnahayes6016 Because when she was in 6th grade my PaPaw moved them off the island and she went to a school taught by English speaking teachers. They whipped the children if they caught them speaking French. After they moved back to the island she quite school to help my PaPaw on his shrimp boat. She was afraid we would be treated the same way, so we only learned a very little bit.
I wish she could have lived long enough to see the revitalization in our culture.

People in France are so humbled by the fact that some Amercians maintained that part of our common history alive... And we love that it has it's own accent and "patois" like we have in our old regions and villages !

There are some French speakers in New England also.
For sure, cross the border from north western New Brunswick to Maine and you will very very likely be addressed in French before English.

I’m in Livingston Louisiana and this makes me want to learn Cajun French.
I just moved to Baton Rouge last December from Arizona to promote the French culture in Louisiana. My family has spent 3 generations in New Orleans. My 2nd great grandfather is from Bayeux in Normandy. I think what you are doing is vital to our cultural existence. Vive la France & Normandie!

We live in Louisiana, and when my daughter was in first grade she learned French through the online public school K12.
I think it's great that my friends in Louisiana are reconnecting to their roots. And Louisiana is completely open to its traditions. My wife is native New Orleanian and I adopted the city. We do not live there now, but will be spending a lot of time back in Louisiana after we are both retired. Lassez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

My granddad is from New Iberia, Louisiana. He grew up speaking French. He moved up here to Arkansas after a hurricane in the 50s. He can still speak some french though. Hes almost 80 and wants to return to louisiana before he dies. I hope I can help him do that soon, if and when this virus crap plays out

PushBacon Louisiana people are Acadians or cut short as Cajun and they are French people who immigrated from France to Acadia Canada. Kicked out by the English and some ended up back to France, some England, many in Quebec then on down all the way down to the State of Louisiana .... French is French no matter where you are.., accents are different and some sayings.
Most of the French in Louisiana Cajuns are descendents of francophone who were kicked out of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland once the British took over

My family on my grandmother's side came from Quebec to Oppolosa, La in 1740 and most of my family was born in Louisiana. I have always wanted to learn French and I am learning onTH-cam! My goal is to one day return and visit our ancestral home which was Quebec.

Cultural diversity is hard to preserve in those times of intolerant globalization. It's a real richness that you can't have back once it stops, languages are alive and you have to practice them so they can continue evolving. If you stop using them in a daily basis they die (like ancient Greek and Latin). Keep being curious and eager to learn.
France has lost a lot of it's idioms when they were forbidden by law during the revolution. Don't commit the same mistake.

My grandmother's people, Joseph Leblanc, came from Quebec Canada and settled in Oppolusa in 1740. My dad was born in Shreveport so I have a connection with Louisiana. I have been trying to learn French on TH-cam and have learned a little but would love to get involved with some of the groups teaching Louisianna french. I live just south of Dallas and there does not seem to any here. Au revoir mes amis.

Très belle vidéo. Je suis d'origine du Chili, je suis née au Québec, j'ai appris l'espagnol à la maison, le français à l'école et l'anglais au quoitidien. Je trouve très important de garder la langue maternel de ces parents, c'est très enrichissant .

It's great to not only hear Cajuns speak French, but speak it with their own distinctive accent! I would guess it most closely resembles that of francophone Canada, but not quite as strong. Lovely.
This is a beautiful video. I'm so happy they are recording hese old folks. Not far from where I live there are quite a few old folks that speak Texas Czech. They still speak English with an accent.

Bravo !! Je suis su Québec et mon ancêtre a fait partie de l'expédition de 1680 qui a découvert l'embouchure du Mississippi. Battez vous fort pour la survivance de notre langue commune ! Il ne faut JAMAIS baisser les bras ! "Laisser le bon temps rouler" oui ! Mais ne jamais baisser les bras ! L'avenir du français en Louisiane est avec le jeunes nouveaux locuteurs !
Oui bon, la bataille pour la langue française a été perdue du moment que Napoléon à vendu La Louisiane aux Americans. La situation est loin d'être comme celle du Québec où il y a déjà une masse critique de francophones.
Par contre, la langue française a bel est bien sa place dans le monde et c'est pas demain où elle disparaîtra.

Encore bravo pour votre initiative et vos efforts que je decouvre grâce au covid-19 et le confinnement que notre gouvernement nous impose pour limiter sa transmission. People saying they speak French in an American accent.
It's not entirely the case.
The French people who settled in Louisiana spoke a specific dialect of French, on of the langues d'oil.
Their R's are originated from that specific dialect.

J'ai toujours de l'émotion quand je rencontre des Québécois en Europe centrale. C'est assez amusant, je les aborde en anglais, et quand je leur demande d'où ils viennent, je réalise que ce sont des Français et qu'ils parlent la même langue que moi. Les différences sont assez superficielles au final.

Ça marcherait pas là-bas. La loi 101 fonctionne car la majorité au Québec est francophone, en Lousiane la majorité est anglophone.
