They weren't trained to solve the same problems that we evolved language for, so it's highly unlikely they are arriving at answers in a way we could consider awareness. But we can't actually know. Regardless, Llms are performing the same task that human brains do by learning and repeating language based on context. What we perceive as consciousness is a system that monitors and interprets other systems, and Llms could eventually be part of a machine equivalent to that framework.
