I would like to add a comment as an F-100 pilot. I flew our of Phan Rang in 1968/9. This is a very accurate video as far as I know. All good and bad things mentioned were right on. And, I agree the Guard pilots were the best, also the maintenance troops they brought with them were great as well. One technical issue not mentioned was the non-linear stick gearing. I think this got more pilots in trouble on landing than anything else. Landings were not that difficult in my experience. Roll them on at 160K, or so, and it was smooth. Jed Erskine
The F-86 could easily break the sound barrier in a dive. Such maneuvers were a common occurrence until complaints about the resulting noise forced a major reduction of the practice.
I was a crew chief on the F100 at Bienhoa AB Vietnam 1970 in the 531tfw.we call the F-100 the lead sled tire change average every 5-landing lots of work for the crew chief. (Ak Larry akles) ssgt.
Just by looking at them, it always seemed obvious to me that both the F-100 and F-105 prototypes had insufficient vertical stabilizers. If it looks right, it probably flies right….
I love how documentaries from this time played generic lo-fi jet sounds when jet fighters were on screen and generic prop sounds when prop planes were on screen. Rudimentary dubbing over silent film footage.
I spent almost 5 years of my life working on the F100D models in SE Asia! I loved every minute of it

that was a "who cares?" achievement in the time. The goal was mach 1 then mach 2 and 3 in stable powered flight.
The sound of freedon!
Met some of the T-bird pilots in 1966.
The F-100 always reminded me of a crocodile.

I, as one, have to tell you that the jets on the last page are f-86 Saber jets, not f-100 super Saber jets
