I was hesitant to subscribe at first because of what I have experienced with other channels that preach about politics. I am not American btw. I had a long reading slump because I've been busy making a living for my family. During the pandemic, I seemed to have more free time and I thought, "I've always loved reading. I should look for channels about books and reading." Then I was surprised at TH-camrs who had echoing views on politics. My country has its own problems so I'm so sorry if I seemed detached from American politics but I just felt odd when I saw a lot of female TH-camrs who seemed to inject their own politics about some books written years ago and started using similar words. I won't go into details about them because I would usually click off when hearing such words. Don't get me wrong, I came in very open-minded and neutral at first and I actually took some of their recommendations. And here, I would like to say THANK YOU to them for recommending modern writers like CH, TJR, AJ, MZ, BOL, DA and many more (yes, I'm using initials for semi-anonymity? haha). Yes, thank you for recommending these writers. I read one or two of each writer's works. I'm truly grateful because I was pushed to go back to my beloved classics. I started reading classics in my teens and it was not because I was forced by my teachers (not all the time anyway). Then I branched out to modern writers in the early 2000s (mostly those who won prizes) but I would always find myself returning to the classics. From 2020 until last year, after giving many modern books a try, I just realized that I did not miss out much by NOT reading most of them. This was a lovely video and I appreciate your candour in discussing many of these classics. I've also made a list of the ones I'd like to read.
Over the summer I started reading Jane Austen and I'm absolutely in love! My Febregency TBR is Byron's poetry, Wordsworth's poetry, and Persuasion by Jane Austen
It's not a regency period book but am currently enjoying an American Revolution era novel called Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow. Definitely reccomend this for anyone wanting to discover wholesome classics. Great questions!!!
Very interesting discussion points, Emma. It's difficult to find 'modern' books which don't celebrate New Age, or which aren't graphic or anti-religious. Authors I've found whose books are either Christian or at least neutral: Katherine Valentine (unapologetically Catholic), Leslie Eames and some of Mary Higgins Clark (thrillers). I'm quite sure there are several others out there. If you're looking for books which 'expand the mind', the list would be a little shorter 🙂.

Totally agree with your speech during #6. 😅 I don’t read very many contemporary books for those very reasons- every once in awhile you can find rare gems but I’d rather read more timeless and interesting books.

Totally get that mindset about modern literature. And I completely agree with the decisive nature of the world today.If I had to pick a word I’d probably go with “relational” I feel like so many of the books being published in recent years center around human connection and relationships. Not necessarily romantic either, many of the books I read are about familial relationships or strong friendships.
I agree with you Emma that most books written today are so poor in taste that it is difficult to read one spontaneously. I tend to stick with specific authors or read new currently published books based on a trusted recommendation. I'll be reading Belinda this month. It's my first time and I'm rather excited to experience this story! Happy Reading!
I agree! The media/political world IS so demanding to be this way or that. That’s it! Most issues are SO complicated and nuanced and demanding people answer deep issues with only two choices just unrealistic. 😅
This is my favorite video of yours that I have seen so far. I am a casual watcher and mainly subscribed simply for the fact that you read classics. However after listening to your tag answers (particularly in regards to numerical rating systems and the state of current literature) I will be sure to watch all of your videos from now on. Thank you for sharing these pieces of yourself, it was very refreshing. I have yet to read anything from the regency era and now I feel more compelled than ever to do so this month.
Your comments on giving a book a numerical rating really resonated with me - I have used Goodreads for years to track my reading, but I constantly struggle with how many stars I ought to award to a book. It's so true that there are so many levels on which a book should be evaluated - perhaps its time to make my own scoring system. Your viewpoints are always so refreshing, Emma!
