On this “On the Hunt” episode I’m back at the local auction yard to look at potential future projects. I wasn’t planning on going back to Ritchie Bros so soon, but a few fans send me some pics of some classic iron that you just don’t see everyday, so I had to go down and take a closer look. The 1st was an old 60’s B-model Mack with sticks that was beautifully restored. Then as I was looking for the other gem I came across a handle of neat old trucks including some Kenworths, Pete’s and a Caterpillar semi that are kinda rare. Finally, after walking the whole yard, I found the unicorn, a 1956 needle nose Kenworth that was meticulously restored and looked like a diamond sitting up on the display platform. What a neat old truck, but too bad it went for more than my budget would allow. Hope you enjoy following me around…

Those cat trucks to the best of my knowledge were just rebranded internationals because cats engines couldn’t meet EPA standards. those “cat” engines are also just an international painted yellow
You are correct, a rebranded international, both companies were going broke during those days
Those cat ct engines utilize a cat block and bottom end and Navistar international designed a head to fit the block that utilized all of the international emissions equipment.
@@mikeshultz1007 don't know much about them but that doesn't sound good, international used a man engine as the max force and international emission system, that didn't work out well either, if only the government would stop stepping on our toes

And now Cat trucks is no more; stopped production here and Australia. I thought it was a cool idea, but they couldn’t make it work. Come to think of it, I don’t think International is selling trucks in Oz either, only the 9800i cab over in NZ.

How in the world does anyone know what that auctioneer is saying? Is that really necessary or is it just another North Americanism?

Unfortunately, CAT trucks were actually Internationals...
I haven’t seen a tattletale 30 years. The clock had a paper disk speed time a a 3 rd line to show cheating ( but can be beaten)
I started driving for Safeway in 1985 and we had the tachographs in the old freight liner cab overs. 350 Cummins with a 10 speed. No power steering, no AC, no radio. Now Safeway has Volvos with 12 speed automatics with all of the safety features and conveniences for the driver. I retired 33 years later.
Always a good to come home and relax after a long day at work to some "on the hunt" videos. Need more of these. Great job

There are a couple of needle nose 60s KWs in Kalispell Montana. On Hwy 2 north of Reserve. Actually Evergreen. It’s a Logging company but I can’t think of the name

I had to stop the bus to comment on"standing in the rain with rubber boots on bidding on things at auctions...your 100% right sir ..them were the god ole days ..the good deals...hot dogs and hamburgers...kids running round..lol ..I was one of them kids back then...I use to go withy uncle...he loved old stuff..maybe that's where I got it...old Fords,old semi trucks .old grain trucks ...I miss it dear...this on line stuff just isn't what you call fun...ok .now back to my regular schedule programming on Twinsticks TV 😉🤘🇺🇸 SALUTE 🇨🇦
The cat trucks i herd were nothing but junk i read ludlow hade one brand new and nothing but problems. The have perkins build small cat motors its a perkins painted yellow.

Motor in that Cat truck was a C15 Regen. Basically the reason Cat gave up on over the road engines. The EPA bit them. Pull the emissions crap off the engine and that truck will be just as good as a Peterbilt.
Yeah the cat truck is just a international with cat emblems cat stopped making highway engines years before those trucks came out it’s a shame they could have had something if they tried it sooner lol

The black Pete was set up to pull Pneumatics. You put a rigid damn trailer behind a spring ride tractor and it can be an awful day! Air ride on the steer axle probably gave him quite a bit of relief.

Cat didn’t build trucks. Navistar built it with (this is the ugly part) a Navistar engine.

Yup. They stopped when they had to go to DPF, EPA2010.
2006 was the last engine they made, they had stockpiled blocks in 2006 so they could make engines for 2007

The early model CAT trucks had the exact same cab as the navistars in australia,the 630 models were pretty good

Those CAT truck are made by International. If you go by the international manufacturing plant in Melrose Park Illinois you see a whole bunch of them out back. The motors are made by international to caterpillars specs

If I'm not mistaken, CAT built their trucks in some sort of deal with NAVISTAR. Some folks say it's a NAVISTAR motor painted yellow.
Bored, you kidding?....I live in the UK, we dont have rigs that, keep doing it. :) I drive a 26 ton Bin Wagon over here DAF chassis.... The Kenny with the Harley Plate would do me, got a 2015 Fatboy.
On the 56 kenworth what was the clock like thing on the dash I know it had a clock and it locked with a swing hinge could not tell what the top dial or gauge was kinda looked like a time clock at first but then after a couple rewinds and pauses I could not tell what the intended purpose was beside a clock or maybe with those heavy duty hinges it was a small safe ?

At 2:56, I saw in the back isle a White/GMC high cabover. Wish you would have looked at that. Drove a 1988 in the Marine Corps, L-10 Cummins with a 9 speed. Had that truck all to myself because nobody liked it, but it at least had air ride and air conditioning out in the Mojave desert, and the Jake would put you thru the windshield if you didn't have your lap-belt on. Good old days.

that old army truck with the reverse gear over and up, says one thing that is a Spicer transmission. same as a spicer Aux. trans, high was up to the dash beside first. Drove two stick for over 30 years. first two stick i drove was a 66 dodge 800 with a 3608 v 8 kitty with a paired up spicer 5/4 in it, that 56 kenny did not have original steering wheel also. then graduated to a 76 Hayes HD 400 big cam 15 over spicer 4 aux.
You don't want to look at anything newer than 2005 or so anyway ... all junk with DEF, EGR, and all that EPA regulated BS. Stick with the good ol' iron ...... and we'll go to as many auctions and junkyards as you want to take us to .... thanks again for the ride-along.

The CATs were junk; just a rebranded International. Low quality for CAT price. We built a few mixers on them but that didn't last long.
like i said buddy put lifts in the shop and you can buy 6 trucks lol. Good luck getting a decent late model w900 or 379 for under $20k with everyone trying to still away from eld they bring big $$$. unfortunately you’re probably looking at a early 90s truck in your price range. cat trucks are just a crappy international and had tons emissions problems . i don’t think that sleeper factory i’ve only seen daycabs

Just a bit more info on that Cat CT660, It was built in partnership with Navistar using a rebranded Navistar engine. The International HX line is the IH branded version of the same truck. Pretty much the same idea as how certain Peterbilts and Kenworths share a lot of parts due to being both Paccar trucks.

back in the 70s my grandfather had a 50s model dump truck. i just love the look of old diesel cabs, the late 40s and early 50s do look like simi trucks their so small looking compared to today's trucks.
Somebody bought that balloon tire samurai for 24k? They out of their mind? That thing was worth maybe 5k on a very good day when all the stars aliened perfectly.
Pending on which country as some outside of Canada and USA there is registered regulations on what of trucks someone can purchase an take back to their country same like Classic Cars in Europe of American Cars they won't allow in Europe now

I’m guessing herd bumpers are a necessity in Canada? Gawd, I hate red interiors. That Cat truck looks like a nightmare to work on, you can barely even see the yellow engine.
All the Aussie Cat trucks came with a C15 in the little one and a C16 in the big one.
The whole reason Cat made trucks was because they didn't want to sell the Cat engines anymore. But the trucks were so terrible and the new C15 was so choked with emissions gear they were no good.
So they scrapped it and only put the C15 in loaders and stationary engines now
