  • In a world clouded by alternative facts, science is here to make things clear. Bill Nye is back on StarTalk All-Stars with comic co-host Chuck Nice and special guest Ross Andersen, the Senior Editor of The Atlantic, where he oversees all things science, technology and health. Listen and learn as we delve into a discussion on science literacy and the search for truth. Hear why Ross believes people are still optimistic about science despite the politicizing of hot-button issues. Explore how infusing science with patriotic pride might solve cognitive dissonance and political disagreement. You’ll also hear our panel contemplate methods on how to have civil discussions with people who have opposing ideas and who argue based on false knowledge. Find out some of the sources available that offer quality science literature online and in print. Discover how some scientific causes can become mixed up in the battle of political identity. Learn why the denial of climate change science may lead to the United States surrendering its leading global position in scientific study and research. All that, plus, fan-submitted Cosmic Queries that range from, “Is social media making us dumber?” to, “What are the odds of Bill and Neil reaching out to the administration to propose goals for space exploration?”

    Bill is a brilliant man
    Bill Nye has a bachelor of science degree he studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University (where he took an astronomy class taught by Carl Sagan) and graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering in 1977. Mechanical Engineering, is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. Including the study of mechanics, thermodynamics, applied mechanics, fluid mechanics and electricity. The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science and structural analysis. In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), and product life cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.
    Nye occasionally returns to Cornell as a guest-lecturer of introductory-level astronomy and human ecology classes.
    After graduating from Cornell, Nye worked as an engineer for the Boeing Corporation and Sundstrand Data Control near Seattle. While at Boeing, he invented a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube used on 747 airplanes, worked on business jet navigation systems and laser gyroscope systems.
    Bill went on to become the CEO of The Planetary Society and helped develop sundials for the Mars Exploration Rover missions. Nye has written two best-selling books on science, including Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation in 2014 and Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World in 2015.

    wow the Gender thing has got a lot of people freaking over Bill. I wonder if he will address this soon. But Guys, you have to remember that Bill is a guy who tries to follow the facts. Gender is a part of the psychology spectrum of science and that is very philosophical atm. So, its not very easy to have a lot of facts on it. I prefer if he just avoided that category. But he didn't. Don't let one thing you disagree with change how a person is seen. He is still a man who is very much a big science advocate and has accomplished a lot in his life.

      The population of the US at large is indoctrinated into a very fixed and static binary. Challenging that binary challenges some of the most fundamental aspects of life that most laypeople have been taught and it terrifies the shit out of them. It doesn't matter that what Bill said doesn't affect these people, they are going to react emotionally, dig themselves in deep, and lash out at anyone who doesn't validate what they believe.

    From the oil companies perspective a low carbon tax helps them
    1. It puts further strain on their coal competitors which produce more CO2.
    2. It gives the appearance that progress is being made without hurting them as much as a later, much higher carbon tax would hurt them.
    3. It makes them look better to the public (look, we support emission reduction too!)

      LeksServices You just asked some really incoherently stupid questions that I'm not even sure relates to anything I just said. So I'll just give you a blanket answer. Transsexuals or whatever wackos are out there can identify with whatever gender they want. Why? Because gender isn't sex. Sex is biological, gender isn't. The sex of a person is objectively true, where as the gender of the person has become extremely subjective. You following me here? It's not a hard concept to grasp.

    This was great! I got myself stuck at TED during the rain this weekend and came across an alternative approach to talking about climate change. Basically, shift the focus to the economic side. 2C of warming just doesn't pack the same punch (particularly in the US) as the potential for much higher costs for food or home owners insurance or utilities.
    We've got some work to do on translating the flood of information we are exposed to daily into knowledge, but we should be able to tackle two problems at once. In the meantime, hit them in the wallet with the "what if the science is correct?" approach, preferably on a super hot day.

      LEARN THIS:
      Why, in MOST mammalian species, the males compete for sexual congress with females? Why are males more aggressive, bigger, stronger, and protect the heard/pack/flock? Is it a PURE construct in mammals that males are territorial and challenge other males for dominance? What about the fact that females of almost every avian and mammalian species nurture and raise the young, are more docile, and more reproductively selective. If it is a PURE construct then why does NEARLY every human culture, (also the more primitive the more pronounced this is GENERALLY) men are the hunters the protectors the leaders of females and other subordinate males? Yeah there's not basis to think that gender has ANY natural predominant roles...

    Yes, we ABSOLUTELY should change the way we vote, from only allowing votes FOR A CANDIDATE to allowing votes FOR OR AGAINST A CANDIDATE! That's not about changing HOW GETS TO VOTE except that those who want to vote against someone would no longer have to choose between being silenced and being misrepresented. In other words, a voter who wants to prevent a corrupt or scary candidate from winning could vote directly against that candidate rather than having to decide between voting for someone they don't want to elect and not voting at all.

    GMOs are not inherently bad. However, the corporate attachment to them (e.g., Monsanto) is the problem. When patented seeds cannot be grown and replanted, and when the courts uphold the corporate claim that a farmer stole their patent when Monsanto and their customers can't control pollen from their plants and contaminate a neighboring farm. Or GMO plants that are resistant to Roundup, so farmers literally drown their fields in Roundup. The people applying the herbicide must where protective gear, but it's OK for us to eat. Add to that fact that Monsanto employees don't eat GMO food in their cafeterias.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but saying GMOs aree bad is like saying electricity (or nuclear electricity) is bad. It is just silly, we genetically modified food for at least 10 000 years by selective breeding, looking for favourable mutations, causing mutations with strong mutagens, UV, radioactivity, but somehow when we finally understand which gene we put in the genome it is bad. The risks of GMOs are real, but they are hardly specific to GMOs, the risks of irradiated seeds full of unknown mutations are far greater yet no one freaks out (and hardly anyone knows that randomly mnutated seeds can be organic, but GMOs with known changes cannot). I wish people stopped freaking out after seeing the three letters and started discussing the real issues in agriculture.

    Guys hating on Bill and saying he shouldn't have come here. You really sound like the SJW's you hate so much, the conversation about gender and his views on it are not relevant to the video, bringing it here is simply dishonest.
    I don't agree with what he said in his show about genders, but that doens't mean everything else he says is wrong or should be outright censored.

    • @CoolCat6131
      @CoolCat6131 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for being a reasonable person... you're a good person!
      However, we'd benefit from considering the following:
      Gender is an idea and sex is biological. No one *who is informed* disagrees that there are more than 2 BIOLOGICAL SEXES.
      However, gender is a product of culture. The ideas associated with gender come from culture -- they are not intrinsic. Humans have invented every single idea. Therefore, ideas can change, because they are not part of nature. It is an idea that girls have a natural tendency to the color pink rather than blue. That is something that is associated with gender, not biological sexes. There are differences between sex and gender. We would all know these things if we were educated, but unfortunately, many of us are not.

    • @gwanael34
      @gwanael34 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Human Animal
      So it's not that we know or don't know if there is 2 genders, it's that we have no idea how to objectively define gender and it therefore could be anything on a spectrum between either extreme.
      There are only 2 sexes, but I can kind of understand what their reasonning for multiple genders, It's not really a "multiple" that you could count, but more something similar to how Metis people can be any shade of black between caucasians and dark africans.

      @gwanael34 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jaden Oldfield
      People don't like when science and facts are denied in favor of feelings. Biologically speaking, there is only 2 sexes, gender is way too subjective to be black and white like in the case of biology. As a human, you are either a male or a female with the exceptions being anomalies. The way you express that sex however can be completly different from an individual to another and is based both on nurture and nature.

    Hey Bill, the reason for alt facts is that we have sold the real facts to the third world. The current economy is based on influence and greed, science is just a non-sell-able commodity that is best done by the marginalized by third world.
    I applaud your work to help make science influential again, but the folks with the money are happiest when getting the science for the lowest price and that is not from the people of the first world.

    The problem is the concept of alternative facts is politicized itself. Both the left and the right have alternative facts, and if you deny that you are part of the problem. It causes affirmation of the rejection of facts presented merely because of political beliefs. The lack of reflection is also a problem, not addressing criticism. It causes distrust, such as with the gender stuff from Bill Nye.

    Cleaner, Cheaper Way to Make Steel Uses Electricity
    Making steel in a similar way to aluminum is cheaper and reduces greenhouse gas emission
    The fires that smelt iron also heat up the planet, but researchers are working on ways to produce higher-quality metals with fewer greenhouse gas emissions, potentially giving U.S. steelmakers an edge in a competitive global market.
    A report released yesterday in the journal Nature highlights a step in this direction that uses electricity instead of heat to extract iron.
    With thousands of years of development and two centuries of industrialization, making iron and steel is a mature process around the world. In 2011, manufacturers produced around 100 billion metric tons of iron globally.
    From mining ores to smelting to tempering alloys, the process is energy intensive, and engineers have chased improvements about as long as steel has topped axes, formed armor and driven machinery.
    "What that means is that the majority of low-hanging fruit have been picked and the processes we have to make [metals] are nearing the limits of what is physically possible," explained Lawrence Kavanagh, president of the Steel Market Development Institute.

It seems for the past several seasons this show has moved away from science and more to politics every friggin show. I miss the good ole days of tuning in and learning something new about space or physics or anything else cool that was actually science related. Im sick of all this political bullshit always being thrown in to every show now. Enough. Just go back to explaining complex scientific ideas in ways that make them enjoyable and easier to understand.
    And here is the 1 and only fact that matters about fake news and alternative facts: The news became fake and alternative the second that large corporations bought the news agency and brought them under their umbrella. From that point on, everything has had a bias attached to it. FACT.
