I just recently found an Optiplex 5050 with an i7-6700, 16g of ram, and Windows 10 for $100.00 on ebay (plus $25 shipping) and I scooped it up. One thing to consider is that the motherboard on the 5050 supports an nvme m.2 SSD which will free up that hard drive bracket for maybe a 1 or 2 tb spinning drive. I'm not going to be using the 5050 for gaming so I can put any old video card in there and not worry about it. Thanks for the video.

Yeah! I’m planning to do an in-depth on an all out upgrade video on each rig. Got a RTX 2070 for the 5050 and a 3070 for the 7020.

@@kennyskomputers1009 A 3070 is a waste on a 3770. I've built multiple gaming computers based on Optiplex 7010 motherboards with various CPU's. I still have one left with a 1240 V2 ( 3770 ) and a GTX 1070 in a 4000D airflow case.. 3770 will basically run 1070 level of graphics at 1080P pretty decent.. Putting an I7 7700 in the 5050 will probably get the most logical use of that processor. I used to buy 7010 MT motherboards for around $15 each.

I have a proper gaming rig, but recently I have bought the third Optiplex machine (used from some marketplace). They aren't for gaming, but can be used as workstations, development servers, home NAS systems etc. They are very quiet. For shell and ssh I really don't need a 2+GB graphics card.

I just recently bought my first ever PC, something for light gaming like roblox and Minecraft ( and some other games of course ) .
I found an HP prebuilt PC for $80
( Windows 10 pro, 128gb brand new ssd , 8gb ram, i5-3570, and a high efficiency 320w psu and a Radeon HD 7450 , which is a really bad gpu BUT it is better than integrated graphics ) , then I threw in something that I could find really quickly and in my budget , which was a gtx 750 ti for $40 . Now I can finally play Minecraft with shaders :D! And at 60fps , 1080p ( Sildrus vibrant medium, if anyone's interested ) , roblox at max graphics in any game, and stuff like GTA V at high with 60+ fps non stop. Considering PC prices are pretty bad where I live, a deal like this for $120 is really good, and im insanely happy :3 ! . I've been playing "The Long Dark" everyday recently, and I get 60fps at 1080p on high. So much fun!

to say the 3770 outperforms the 7500 is somewhat true...but not really all that true. Performance is very similar..so I would opt for the gen7..many improvements to the cpu since gen3.

nice video! the only real apeal of the 5050 is just that kaby lake actually supports full 10 bit h265 decoding. So a i5 7500 makes for a perfect starter plex server. gaming tho, the old 4c no hyper threading chips just don't really hold up well at all outside of super light titles.

Id recommend the OptiPlex 390/990 systems as they're just as upgradable as these but lack any inconsistencies such as the PSU connector being non standard in 99% of 3020/7020 systems. They use 2nd gen Intel chips which suffer a very slight IPC loss vs IvyBridge.

I bought a 7050 and am happy with performance. REASON? There are Dell power supplys rated up to 500 watts. The pcie buss is superior, there is a NVME slot, currently running an i7 7700 32gb DDR4 ram RTX 2060 Super and humms along quite nicely. The older Dell would make a good NAS for a home network rather than a gaming machine.however it is cheaper to replace the older systems PS than the newer one. Age also becomes a factor. Electronins are NOT immune the the effects of aging and repeated stress. Buy the newest system you can afford.

The 3770 only supports up to 32gb, how did you get 128gb to work with it? Maybe the other system since it's DDR4, you can install 128gb in those. The 3770 one- nope, they didn't make over 8gb sticks with ddr3, with 4 slots that's the maximum supported 32gb. Still, not a bad video!

What I would do is get the OptiPlex 5050, get a saw, and attac..... Gently cut out a spot for the GPU, which will look perfect.
Then go on eBay and get a adaptor, from the weird aftermarket plug, to a normal plug, then toss in a 500 Watt Power Supply. After that I would see what the best CPU will go in that, maybe a i9 9900. Or it might just be stuck to i7 7~~~. But find the best CPU, and if it is a Xeon CPU, which is about the same speed as the i7, that is even better since it is much cheaper most of the time.

    • @kennyskomputers1009

You made a light slip saying what the i5-7500 could be upgraded to. In one instance you said the i7-7800 and another time you said an i7-8700, both would require a different motherboard. I'm sure you meant the i7-7700.
It would be great for hear your thoughts or review of the HP Prodesks. I find them a great OEM upgrade as the 6th gen rigs are cheap to get, you can easily swap the power supply to put what ever GPU you want. The only adapter you need is for the slimline dvd drive which has a smaller power and data connection if you upgrade the power supply.
