    Look at mulch and rock buckets for When you get your tractor. Those buckets are designed to sift out the dust and dirt that would be scooped up by a dirt bucket. I'd recommend with attachments that would benefit you over a common dirt bucket. 1 a snow bucket it's bigger and holds more and will work great in the winter for plowing snow. 2nd would be pallet forks for moving pallets. 3 would be the mulch and rock bucket much easier to scoop materials without scrapping up the debris you don't want keeping wood and kindling much cleaner then a normal bucket.

    You could have a couple of wheel barrels next to you to throw your chunks, and kindling in while you split. Then you wouldn't need to separate it from the saw dust. I don't know how much wood you sell a year,, but maybe pay a high school student part time to stack your wood. The thing that really matters is it's your business, so like the saying goes, everyone has an opinion and sometimes it stinks. Thanks for making these videos. They are always entertaining to watch.

    We dump the”leftovers” on my logging trails and some goes in my compost and some goes on our perennial gardens. Nothing goes to waste!! Once you have a tractor with a bucket you’re wheel barrel will be on holidays for a bit. We also hold onto all of our 40 pound birdseed bags and refill them with birch bark and good size kindling for our fires. we burn 12 to 15 cord a year in two buildings combined.

    I switched to stacking 5 foot high when I stopped buying wood. That way I do Use 20% less pallets and 20% less bending over to get the bottom row. Faster to Load in the trailer too since more wood is up high.

    A 6, 8 or 10 tine pitchfork would get most or all of the useful kindling but then you'd still have sawdust to shovel and remove, too. Then there's a shaker system (needs power) to sort and drop sawdust and small pieces into a bottom bin (on wheels to haul away then move the whole box to a new place) and leave kindling on top (to bag). In any case, it's more back and arm work.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, always more work, and is it worth it?

    • @neilmeyers5519

      @@InTheWoodyard I am an end user and only saw and split what won't fit in my stove insert so for me kindling is worth it. For you being busy busy busy it's another story. The simplest way I can think of is pitchfork scraps into a bin then shovel away or even sell sawdust. Maybe you just need a couple dedicated high schoolers to help then kindling goes for a nominal price or free and bump the real wood price up a bit. Someone must have roller attachments to take off bark which should work to gather up scraps, too. I'm just tossing out ideas really.

    I have an elaborate & crazy idea! I've been thinking about the same thing. This is a doozy but hear me out. I would only undertake this with the aromatic Woods people like to smoke with ... but when you have your tractor you could build a series of shallow boxes out of pallet wood. Have the bottom of them with cattle panels starting at the large moving down through Pig and goat size then the kind of plastic netting they put around construction sites to a bird-like netting... make the bottom with some sturdy pallets stacked and bounce/drop the loaded top several times with a tractor. Bottom half for trails top half for smoker wood?

    As you are cutting, when you change saws or put it down to chuck rounds, take a few seconds to pull the man glitter off the ground where the rounds are going. Then your splits won’t be sitting on the water retaining cushion of saw dust.
    When the cutting is done you can shovel into your truck or tractor bucket and dump them on said trail.
    Cheers. 🇨🇦

      And then what do I do with it? I am just not sure it is worth the extra time and effort.

  • @TheLoiteringKid
    @TheLoiteringKid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The simple sorting method, take the miners approach, and get some hardware cloth, 3/4-1 inch, set it up like they do grizzly bars where you can dump your wheel barrel across it, let gravity do most the work.
    Something like pitbullscreeners.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/PB148-Front-Large-Thumbnail.jpg
    except with hardware cloth.
    More complex. you could build some sort of trommel tumbler that one the one end sorts out the smallest stuff, and further down the screens/mesh widens, and out the far end goes all the big chunks and usable firewood/kindling.
    Years back, got on a list for "free firewood," turns out it was all the sawdust and cut offs from a truss builder, we used some old milk crates to sift the wood out, then spread the remaining dust as mulch.

    My firewood operation is much smaller than yours. Just something the boys and I do for fun and spending money. We cut in the woods (so little sawdust) and split at home on the driveway (easy clean up). 95% is what we call red oak in CA which looks different than yours (much gnarlier). I'd guess 80% goes for BBQ/smokers and the rest for fireplace wood. Who needs heat in paradise. We only sell by delivery and the amount is what will fit in the truck or less. A cord works out to be about $450. We found we make more money selling smaller quantities locally (within 10 miles, with most within 5 miles). I hate wasting anything, especially anything I sweated for, so we started bagging the chunks, scraps, and bark in the bags our chicken feed comes in and selling those as smoking wood. Sells out every year like the rest of the wood. We just use a rake to get the scraps, the little stuff that isn't easy to pick up goes to green waste.

    During your discussion about the kindling, you mentioned the most important factor several time and that is your time. Unless you can make substantially more money on kindling than you do on firewood, why take time away from a business line that is already at 100%? There may be value in that kindling, but that doesn't make it valueable to you. Maybe call the local Boy Scout troop and let them have it to sell as a fund-raiser. Maybe some retired guy can take it and sell it and give you back a certain percentage of his sales. The last thing you want to do is turn down a firewood sale because you're too busy bunduling kindling.

      Yes, but it might take a little longer, but not much.

    You could sift it using 2 layers of chicken wire, that's how I sift my coals, but I also dont think it's worth the time

      Yup, good ideas, I agree it might not be worth it!

    I meant show your business card on each TH-cam video.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not going to do that. I don't get many customers from youtube and I don't want to give out my personal number to tens of thousands of people for them to call me and "chat" about firewood 24 hours a day. It is a good idea just not for me.

      Buy a separate cell number which you publish on TH-cam. Turn off ring tone. Send everything to voice mail. Return reverse cold calls from prospective customers in local prefixes in your delivery area who want to do business with you. You may be pleasantly surprised how many quality prospective customers will come from TH-cam if you invite them to call. The trust you are building with your videos is very valuable, and compelling.

      @@bobharrington8063 Viewers on TH-cam could just message him here. No need for the extra overhead of second lines and voicemail. I agree there is a good report built here.

      @@bobharrington8063 Good points but I have all the firewood business I can handle now and youtube is growing very fast too and after talking to other youtube people privacy and time control is a very big problem as viewers (thousands a day) want a little piece of you. I am doing all I can now to keep up by answering comments the best I can along with my regular business and my fire wood business, but thank for the input and for watching Bob!
