If someone tries a 2 handed choke they will also be driving you backwards with real force. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart will mean you get pushed down because your balance will instantly be compromised. You fight the way you train. It is amazing what a rugby player can accomplish against someone who claims to be “trained” but has never trained with someone who actually applies force. This is one of the biggest problems with Aiki-Jitsu styles. If you got your base under you and dropped your centre of gravity you may actually have a fighting chance at using your cane for something other than helping you stand up from the ground.
Hapkido student here generally speaking, footstance is worked on a lot, and we get in trouble if any of us are caught standing like a board as they are in the video, haha. I think they didn't worry about stance purely to get through as much as they could in the shortest amount of time (they must've had something else going on) it's also worth noting that something taught a lot is moving with momentum instead of fighting against it - eg, if someone grabs your throat pushing you back, one thing you could do is take their elbows down while moving back and down, and redirecting the momentum into their face. I think the people who are quick to denounce martial arts training are the people who have never trained themselves ;) hope this helped! :)
Not realistic, in the confines of stupid British Laws but, you'll be dead. I'm a paraplegic too, with a severe degenerative spinal cord disease. I use a Hanbo with a wrist sling for support, it's made out of an oak shovel Handle and is designed mainly for mobility, but the dual-purpose edged section will break anything. I had it certified as a mobility device at the Cop shop as they are taking them off of people lately. I never realised after surviving my single days, that I'd be back into my fighting days approaching 70 and disabled, but I am. dam the Laws those bastards will not be able to give chase when I walk away, as I have already had a pack of 4 retreat to their Van in a remote Park, and drive it at me nearly killing both myself and my old Dog. We dived in that Car and they left damage and paint on the Door, as I didn't have time to close it, sick of Laws which only work for the pond scum of life.
A) it's tragic, that disabled elderly people have to defend themselves against gangs of roving young people. B) I'm sick of being forced to endanger myself further, by not being allowed to really defend myself. I lived in the UK and defended myself against two larger opponents, who initially were throwing half house Bricks at Lorries with canvas and ropes coving their load, which shot off with all the momentum of the trucks at 80mph+, nearly killing one of us. We tried to evade them ducking into a stationary and newspapers shop after yelling at them didn't work. When we left, they were waiting, still with a bag full of Bricks, my mate wasn't a fighter, I held a Judo license at my local Cop shop! I told my friends to run while I went forward to them, to stop any idea of getting a brick in the Back of the head, as I approached he went for a steel pen in his top pocket, and his heavier set and larger mate was Backing him up, I went for his eyes as a reaction to the pen being pulled and stuck the other Guys ear, Knocking him out. Guess who the Cops charged, I was an apprenticed Engineer at the time in my first year, and the others I'd Known for years both worked in Banks as I remember, we coincidentally met on the tube coming Home and were just walking home chatting. I had never been in contact with the police 1st charge and they threw the Book at me over the JUDO license, I practised Martial arts for a long time after that, but never took another grade and only paid by cash. They charged me with all sorts, I can't remember the list, but it added up to 15yrs inside if I lost. luckily enough many saw it and came forward, they dropped the charges but held them at the Copshop for supposedly a year, which I was to find out was really indefinitely. As I worked on many High profile Jobs, Hendon police college was one. It required a lot of explaining every time! At the end of my apprenticeship, I left to live in Canada which has the same stupid rules and Laws. Now if any attack, and these days they are even out here, as I'm seen as easy pickings, I do what I need to and get the Hell out and don't revisit the scene, as the Cops stink!
I have trained cane self defense with several old guys ... I don't know why... but old mens tend to hit too much in the balls with the stick !! lol luckily for me, I had a cup!
Wow this is ultimate, though wooden curved canes are are rare in our times... I would rather use nordic-walking stick or wooden umbrella instead :) Anyway good practical instructions, useful as an addendum to basic martial arts skill. Some time ago I watched shaolin routines/forms for curved wooden canes, it is available also here on YT...

Sorry i'v checked every where on google and not one cane masters came up in Sheffield UK and no where in Sheffield cabn you buy the fighting stick you show in your video .
Not sure there is anyone teaching cane master skills in Sheffield, may have to try further afield if that is possible. Check out Canemaster Chris Bird, he's based in Gosport Hampshire.
While these are very static exercises they are still effective. However, have in mind an aggressor also can move very quickly into your space. That's where good "swing and hit" techniques are handy. If you train these techniques please use a dummy or sandbag as a strike with such a cane can be deadly or at least inflict serious injury...this is not a toy!
No, my stick is oiled oak, it Took a 1.5 to 2-inch cherry tree limp clean off at the trunk. I fenced for a while and I'd rather stick with my current defence, the rounded end can be a thrusting weapon nobody is getting up from, with 220lbs behind the thrust.
Skip the 'punch block' scenario - a kook on pcp will punch 3 or 4 times per second with both hands flailing. 3:30 keep the back of your hand parallel to the floor - having your hand vertical is very weak - Using 2 hands with all your moves is probably 3 times stronger.
I spent quite a while as a cop, and never encountered anybody on drugs - PCP or otherwise - who could punch that fast. Also, having studied both Kali and Escrima, I'm fairly certain the average person can block a punch with a stick, if they'll practice the techniques. ...also, keep in mind that the average punk/thug/asshole isn't likely to expect the victim to fight back, or have any skill/aptitude at fighting or using a weapon. They want and choose 'easy' targets, like people with walking sticks/canes. One way or the other, it's a hell of a lot easier to defend yourself with a weapon and some knowledge of how to use it than it is empty-handed and with no clue what to do.
@@guarddog318 - A cane is a medical device not a weapon. www.canemasters.com sell some really good ones and they have a Cane Fu organization of instruction.
I hope that's not a serious question? Running doesn't mean you have to be Usain Bolt in the 100m. It means moving away as fast as you can, getting out of harm's way... probably at a higher speed than you usually walk. It doesn't have to mean sprinting at 15mph. Hit someone in the crotch and run away whilst they recover, simple. People with canes aren't necessarily invalids. They probably have more brain power than you though. 🙄
If you are actually crippled and your attacker is not should you give them a second chance.? I am one bad shove away from massive amounts of back surgery. I’m one fall away from not being able to father my children. If I hit the ground even once I’m a dead man if the attacker is serious I don’t get up quick. Are any of you actually dependent on the cane to walk?
This instructor seems like he's getting really fancy those are pretty complicated techniques just in my opinion some of the stuff looked real doable but some of it like that foot strike would take a lot of practice take a lot of practice to be that accurate. As a beginner which I would consider myself I think that basic thrusting and swinging techniques and vulnerable location training will get somebody formidable pretty quick if they if they have some strength behind the stick.
Bear in mind that many attackers today are under the influence of drugs that not only augment adrenalin, level of violence and lack of self preservation but also act as strong pain limiters, so don’t hesitate to use increased force beyond what is being suggested here.
Weapon vs someone without can become a legal nightmare. Consider a defensive inflicted wound and to where vs a offencive wound. Train in actual attack, not in these situations shown. Street situation attack are so much quicker and forceful.
A cane is a medical device not a weapon. Can never be a weapon otherwise you need to register every hospital patient / physiotherapy clinic patient - every disabled person.........
UK legal definition of an offensive weapon is any article made, intended or adapted to be used to cause harm etc. So, a rolled up newspaper (or, exaggerating for effect, a feather) could be so defined. The trick is to carry an everyday article, for the purpose of its design. If it is subsequently used as a weapon, for self defence, with reasonable force applied, you're in the clear. Yes you'll have questions to answer, but you'll be in the clear.
Not if the attacker is younger and you are older or just need a cane due to a disability. Also it would be fine in a Stand your Ground State like Florida if you are being attacked.
Sorry, but I thought these kind of static exercises got debunked years ago. I think a much more useful approach would be to show simple, offensive striking techniques against a moving target, combined with fast evasive footwork.
Yeah, techniques like this tend to fall apart when dealing with a resisting opponent. Also, more than a few of these techniques require a lot of space, something you're not likely to have. Best to stick with basic jabs and strikes.
jonnysongs in other words hit and run! Unless you are to old to run in which case you piss your diaper and hope you hit them hard enough 💀👴🏼🏃🏻run Forrest.

Why do these instructors usually demonstrate on guys smaller than them? Not meant to fault the techniques or this instructor... Just saying. Also, they rarely show the "attacker" resisting a throw, takedown or pressure point. Training technique is one thing, but it's worthless if you never encounter any resistance.
Me: forgets all training and beats the living 💩 outta bad guy/gal. My beautiful cane breaks🤬...sues bad guy/gal for another beautiful custom cane before he/she heads to prison.
OMG. I need to help you guys understand the mechanics of cane defense. These guys have no concept of kinetics or balance, no marital arts experience, no pressure testing. It seems like they are just a sales company trying to sell expensive canes to naive consumers. I'm not trying to be mean, I believe that cane defense is a legitimate concept. It's just that there is no understanding of technique, positioning for safety, or teachability. Let's chat and put together a real instructional video. I can bring you some real applications if you like,... and still help sell your canes. Let's please collaborate.
The problem with all of this stuff is you need to add rage/adrenaline to the attacker while adding fear and shock to the defender and see what really happens, even if in a training scenario you tell someone to go at you 100% it will never be like the real thing on the street..even when people use something as powerful as a firearm in a real situation it often doesn’t go the way they planned or trained for. Not to say that there aren’t people who’ve put a lot of training in with firearms can’t deploy them effectively..but to deploy a cane effectively in a real life situation would require a ton of very intense practice....I say this only because my 60 year old mother just bought a cane saying it can be used for self defense because she watched a TH-cam video, so just want to make it clear for all you old folks out there...also this beer gut bloke (no offense) is putting way to much credit to “shattering bone” by blocking a strike with a cane..people are fast enough to lay off in that situation and transition to a different attack...the best chance you have with a cane is to swing at their face...and even then they’ll prob block it, grab it, rip it out of your hand and continue to beat the shit out of you....just saying
You need to practice and Know where and How to hit, It takes a little time, but works, if you know what to do, they are are also demonstrating within the confines of the Law, in stupid countries like the UK and Canada, where we have to worry more about the attacker than the criminals. I've been there and done that, as a Paraplegic in today's society, strike, Break stuff, disable them and escape, they are probably not going to fess up that they attempted to rob a disabled 70yr old like myself, at least they haven't so far.
Anyone carrying a stick or bat or similar tool puts themselves at immediate disadvantage against anyone who can execute even rudimentary aiki or jujutsu.
This is self defense techniques? Never allow the attacker to reach you. never allow an assailant to touch you. That's the reason for a Cane. Strike and retreat is Much More Prudent.
excellent channel you have !! and great self defense videos !! Have you ever been forced to use martial arts or personal defense in a real situation? if so ... how has it been?
Won't an able bodied person look rather silly walking around with a walking stick? If a person genuinely needs the stick will this work since the stick will be off the ground and not being used for the support it was genuinely being used for in the first place? I would have thought the thing was to be used at long distance to persuade a would be attacker to think again. If this does not work and the attacker closes in, surely the stick is now a hindrance rather than asset. Surely the stick should be sacrificial? once its lost its use ditch it for fisticuffs.
I ride my bicycle with my canemaster battle cane and hike with it - nobody takes notice of it - cars stop and let me cross the road - and the airport took me to the front of the line :))
If you use a hard wood cane that is like the butt end of a pool cue stick, and not some cheap low cost one made of light materials, you will have a dangerous weapon when used right. The methods used in this video were very basic and gentle at best. They would not do well in an actual attack. A cane is generally used by the elderly to get around, and if someone takes good defense instruction on how to use a cane in their young age, and continues to practice, by the time they are in their 70's, they will be a big problem to any thug who preys on the elderly. One good strike from a quality made cane will cause severe damage to the legs, shins, groin, arms, or head and send the thug into severe shock mode from the pain, and they will either be knocked out, or running away from their victim to save their life.
@Dooneegomaface Ifinnaspring MY main point is that the elderly who are well skilled with a cane will be a much more difficult victim than one who doesn't have a cane.
A cane makes you a target. Only carry one if you need one. If you need one many of these techniques will be useless to you because you will lack the footing to be successful. Be careful. And be safe. This is for fun. Not real life.
This is the lamest instruction of self defense that i have seen in a long time. If you honestly believe that people are going to just stand there and not grab the cane or let you man handle them. No !!!! Plus the people that are carrying a cane are likely disabled, so it needs to be quick, sneaky and brutal in a way that is effortless requiring little effort .
Just what I was thinking. I'm not classed as disabled, but arthritic hips mean that I need my cane on the ground in case one of them 'gives way'. I might be able to do some of the techniques, but nothing fancy.
can't help myself...these are a bunch of old aggressive guys with big muscles their head has trouble containing. They talk like you are supposed to be kind, but gleefully and seemingly boastfully show you how not to be.

Nicely executed! I like it!
What about the knife you get in the belly?
If someone tries a 2 handed choke they will also be driving you backwards with real force. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart will mean you get pushed down because your balance will instantly be compromised. You fight the way you train. It is amazing what a rugby player can accomplish against someone who claims to be “trained” but has never trained with someone who actually applies force. This is one of the biggest problems with Aiki-Jitsu styles. If you got your base under you and dropped your centre of gravity you may actually have a fighting chance at using your cane for something other than helping you stand up from the ground.
Hapkido student here
generally speaking, footstance is worked on a lot, and we get in trouble if any of us are caught standing like a board as they are in the video, haha. I think they didn't worry about stance purely to get through as much as they could in the shortest amount of time (they must've had something else going on)
it's also worth noting that something taught a lot is moving with momentum instead of fighting against it - eg, if someone grabs your throat pushing you back, one thing you could do is take their elbows down while moving back and down, and redirecting the momentum into their face.
We dived in that Car and they left damage and paint on the Door, as I didn't have time to close it, sick of Laws which only work for the pond scum of life.

sehr gut
I now use a cane at 69 years of age so these cane techniques can come in handy. I hope I never have to use them.
I have trained cane self defense with several old guys ... I don't know why... but old mens tend to hit too much in the balls with the stick !! lol luckily for me, I had a cup!
Nice
Imagine someone jumping you and you say: 69 years, 420 seconds, that's how long I've waited to kick your ass.
Wow this is ultimate, though wooden curved canes are are rare in our times... I would rather use nordic-walking stick or wooden umbrella instead :)
Anyway good practical instructions, useful as an addendum to basic martial arts skill. Some time ago I watched shaolin routines/forms for curved wooden canes, it is available also here on YT...

No. They are terrible. Lol
I'm a 68 year old disabled pensioner I live in Sheffield South Yorkshire UK i watched you video and you say at the end contact your local cane master in the UK .
What if he’s got a pointed stick? Seriously, this is helpful.
Buen video!
How do you call a cane from united kingdom?
UKane
Walking stick.
Skip the 'punch block' scenario - a kook on pcp will punch 3 or 4 times per second with both hands flailing. 3:30 keep the back of your hand parallel to the floor - having your hand vertical is very weak -
Using 2 hands with all your moves is probably 3 times stronger.
Video at 5:16 he said, "I can run". Why do you use a cane, then?
I hope that's not a serious question? Running doesn't mean you have to be Usain Bolt in the 100m. It means moving away as fast as you can, getting out of harm's way... probably at a higher speed than you usually walk. It doesn't have to mean sprinting at 15mph. Hit someone in the crotch and run away whilst they recover, simple. People with canes aren't necessarily invalids. They probably have more brain power than you though. 🙄
Hehe Nice techniques ...really
If you are actually crippled and your attacker is not should you give them a second chance.? I am one bad shove away from massive amounts of back surgery. I’m one fall away from not being able to father my children. If I hit the ground even once I’m a dead man if the attacker is serious I don’t get up quick. Are any of you actually dependent on the cane to walk?
Klasse
what if you have a cane that folds up
Simple is better. The more complicated the technique, the harder it will be to apply to an attacker who may not be following the script
Why strike the instep? If you miss, you become the sparing target! a three inch target is too much for too little effect if missed~
A classy way to snuff a bad guy.
Bear in mind that many attackers today are under the influence of drugs that not only augment adrenalin, level of violence and lack of self preservation but also act as strong pain limiters, so don’t hesitate to use increased force beyond what is being suggested here.
Fighting dirty for dummies: Cane edition.
reminds me of Bob Breen :)
@@spokest As long as you feared for serious bodily harm or worse you are in the clear when attacked.

Because they suck and these techniques won't work. Lol
Because resistance could result in real injury to "the attacker"
What if they wrestle the Kane of me
The problem with all of this stuff is you need to add rage/adrenaline to the attacker while adding fear and shock to the defender and see what really happens, even if in a training scenario you tell someone to go at you 100% it will never be like the real thing on the street..even when people use something as powerful as a firearm in a real situation it often doesn’t go the way they planned or trained for.
I don't think you should let a person get that close to you if you have a cane.
Instructions not clear. Got my cane taken away by thy aggressor and thusly got brained by it.
This would only work if your walking stick is solid. If you use a folding walking stick it wouldn't work
I think he learned this from a old TV show. Lol Perhaps the old Avengers show with Mrs. Steele. Lol
Some of these comments are so negative, why did you bother watching. question, have you ever been hit in the face with a stick.
excellent channel you have !! and great self defense videos !!
Yeah true,
You could use an umbrella if the cane looks too silly!
I need a stick, I have a nasty spinal problem. However.... A bit of adrenaline is better than any painkiller I've ever had....
I think no one should fight cane people unarmed.
...AUSGEZEICHNET!!!!!!
This is a horrible video. These are the sort of techniques we used to play around with when we were 13 thinking we were masters. No real life application at all.
