    As a network engineer, the Mikrotik gear is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, they're cheap, and can do basically anything a high end Cisco router can do. But, the OS is hot garbage, to the point that I won't work on them at all.

    I've been watching your videos for a few days now.
    And I had to sub because so many channels with a lean towards open source and free software don't have any real content.
    It's the same old videos installing different Distro's in VMs and talking about the apps that are installed with the DE.
    The only real content some have is starting flame wars by the usual digs at Microsoft and regurgitated points about updates that haven't been valid since Vista.
    Then there's this channel where you have actual content and share genuine important info without hyperbole.
    As a long time Windows and Linux user who loves the philosophy of open-source and is none too fond of mega-corporations, your channel is genuinely fun to watch and original in content.
    Thanks man, the channel is awesome!!!!!!

    Hi Chris,
    The Mikrotik's are actually REALLY good price wise. You're saying they are only good for L2. However this is not the case at all. Their ASIC's and OS support nearly every protocol used in the service provider industry (MPLS, BGP, OSFP). Their only drawback is support (there is no professional paid support from Mikrotik), and their gui/cli (yes routerOS has 'proper' CLI), needs some getting used to.

    If you are running cables all the way from your rack to your desk, why use moonlight and not just a KVM switch? You would really only need to run the one set of cables to the desk cause most KVMs support switching hot keys. That way you would literally get native performance instead of having to remote in and gaining a bunch of latency.

    • @HoangTheBoss

    Hi Chris, would you be able to do a short video on how you choose your UPS devices? What to look for in terms of Business vs Home use power failure scenarios?

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wish I had a good method for choosing UPS, but generally its APC or Cyberpower... even though I've had all of them eventually fail after about 3-5 years. The big thing with traditional UPS is cycling them out when they die.
      In businesses I generally buy two UPS's and use a 1U power switcher that both UPS's feed into... then plug any devices without redundant power supplys into that. Then when a UPS goes out... generally one of them will be left holding up the load and gives me time to swap them out with no downtime to the business.

    One word of advice concerning Mikrotik routers/switches. The SwitchOS is far simpler to use (in my opinion) and can do everything that 95% of people buying said products want to do. You can even manage VLANs on the simpler and less fully-featured SwOS.

    4:10 symptoms you would likely be experiencing can be caused by bugged out firmware, that can go with any mid grade industry smart switch.
    Suggesting not to overlook the possibility and see if you can upgrade firmware for the switch after pulling it out of rack production and see if you get same results while doing testing.
    Maybe a cheap laptop and kali linux you can do stress tests on the switch to see if you find any issues.
    I got an HP Procurve 2950 48 port switch in my home rack, at first setting up LACP on 4 ports was not happening, worked for an hour, after that, the 4 lagg ports had connection activity but no data transfer. (You have to use Putty and serial adapter because web console does not provide features.) So.
    i did some investigating,
    Found out firmware was never updated on switch, previous production from an older business IT, just slipped switch on rack and connected single 1gb ethernet to power the rest of the office.
    (Thats common for uneducated IT in my state)
    So,
    Saved config file, downloaded newest Firmware, applied new firmware in web panel, restarted switch, uploaded saved config file,
    plugged all 4 lacp connections back to 24, 23, 22, & 21
    We were back online and haven't had a problem with it since.
    Switch been running 4 years non stop.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct, however when used on a single target in Windows using iSCSI initiator, it is pretty much a DAS at that point.
      In a virtualization setting it can have multiple hosts connecting to a target for VMs and such, which typically would reside in a SAN. SAN to me is Storage Area Network with something a hell of a lot more expensive than a cheap NAS box.

    • @UnreasonableSteve
      @UnreasonableSteve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ChrisTitusTech DAS to me specifically refers to there being no network installed. That storage *certainly* isn't direct attached. While SAN may typically be an enterprise technology, so is iSCSI, and so was even NAS until small NASes were popularized. I can't see any justification for trying to redefine DAS to include networked storage.

      Anyway from my estimates I'd guess between 400 and 600w for the rack with most of it idling unless he's doing heavier processing than I think he is. All of those at full tilt could probably run north of 1200w if you pushed it.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So crossover cables are a bit of a dead thing and probably not the term to use as everything is smart enough these days you don't have to make this cable. However, I am using a cable from the Synology to a 10G port in the Mac Mini. This Mac mini has a static IP on another subnet and the synology 10G port is also on the same subnet. This allows them to talk to each other. I setup NFS shares on this isolated network for direct access.
      So it's effectively a crossover setup from the old days where you didn't want to use a switch or (hub with collisions). The crossover is completely unnecessary, but its just the old school in me coming out just incase I was editing a video and my switch went down or somehow was congested, etc...
      Both the Synology and the Mac have other ethernet ports used for internet access or to access the main subnet.

Is the advantages that you can have both linux and windows running at the same time, store data separately from the PC, and move data between computers easily? Not trying to argue that it is pointless, I want to know why go with this setup over a more traditional, single PC setup.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      WHAT!? SMB over NFS... I've have never seen a test in my professional career where SMB was a better performer.
      SMB is absolutely trash and is only used by for compatibility with Windows and legacy systems. Not to mention it's security issues.
      NFS has far less overhead per packet and is much more efficient. For video editing, SMB shouldn't even be an option, it really boils down to NFS vs iSCSI and the new mac's don't do well with iSCSI yet.
      So NFS wins by default.

    I have a box of Mikrotik routers. For the life of me I could never get the wireless to have good throughput or to have reliable connectivity. Even tho I like the OS and hardware I've moved on. One of those products that works but not quite as it should.

    On the subject of old raspberry Pis and Jetson Nano, i wish they hadnt moved away from the DIMM/SODIMM form factor on the rPi CM4, and i wish Nvidia would update the Nano with a newer node, maybe more cores, and ampere
    I know they have newer versions of the Jetson, but not the Nano, the affordable one. I'm not paying $600 for what is a low end cellphone, with a GTX **30 class card strapped to it

      Yeah the power is from it being cheap, nVidia I doubt will put too many resources into making the nano as the market is so small that they don't care compared to their other ventures. However, there are other players that are joining the space and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

    • @UnreasonableSteve

      Look for company discards! Obviously your country may be different but usually you can get by in the home with a generation or two (or three) older equipment than the corporate world can.
      I would love to hear how much was spent on this rack and if any equipment was used before purchase

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the rack started with just company discards like Steev said. Almost the entire thing was then slowly pieced together from old equipment. Heck, most of the equipment is pretty old now. I don't think there is anything in the entire rack that is over 1k retail. The synology with the large drives is definitively the most expensive part of the rack.

  • @kyleolsen3305

    So running 4 different machines out of your rack, do you have them hard wired to a single monitor? How do you interface with them? Do you have different m/K for each comp or do you only run one hard wire and remote into the others from your main machine.
    I’ve always wanted to run my computers out of a rack but never figured out the best way to get 0 latency with high refresh rate and resolution displays while keeping my audio interfaces and m/k and accessories running at full bandwidth.

    Why Synology Hybrid RAID over RAID 5?

    • @UnreasonableSteve
      @UnreasonableSteve 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who endorses raid 5, especially on 16TB drives. Most admins would probably recommend raid60 at a minimum for parity/performance on that large of drives (but 60 would eat up a crap load of space for that few of drives with little benefit over 10)

    • @uguud
      @uguud 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UnreasonableSteve Except Synology themselves endorses RAID 5 over SHR. They published a TH-cam video on Oc. 22 entitled "Getting started with Synology for the Home User - Synology Webinar" where it is specifically recommended to use RAID 5 instead of SHR due to performance issues.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most raid is crap in my opinion. ZFS pools is really where it is at for bigger environments. This tiny setup really doesn't matter between RAID 5 and SHR. Also, Synology doesn't endorse SHR because BTRFS had problems years ago specifically with this configuration. However, I absolutely hate RAID in general as someone who has seen first hand a raid controller go out... I'd much rather have a BTRFS based setup or even better a ZFS style pool in something like TrueNAS if you don't use Synology.
