I love Perry Mason and there's nothing nicer to me than a cozy rainy night rewatching this wonderful series. The Della Street character was so classy, and she always looked like a million bucks. There were so many great actors throughout the show and watched all the TV movies as well. Thanks for remembering Barbara Hale and this incredible show.
Della Street, er, Barbara Hale, was a customer of mine a couple of times when I was working my way through college at a part-time job at the May Co. North Hollywood store. First time she came in (1976), the other two sales people had no clue who she was. I recognized her immediately and said to the other two, I'll help her. "Why, who is she?" one asked. "That's Barbara Hale," I replied. "Huh? Who?" said the other salesperson. "She's Perry Mason's secretary, Della Street!" I explained. Slowly, the lights went on in their heads. Meanwhile, I went over and showed her I knew who she was -- and what a nice customer she was, indeed. Classy lady!
Ive recently started watching Perry Mason again after many years and im absolutely loving it. Its so nice to go back and hear something with a good story line, great character chemistry and clear diction..and i love those wonderful character actors and guest celebrities from the Golden years of Hollywood. Without the gratuitous gore and numbing violence that is today a feature of many drama action pics...where the visual effects substitute for the story line. And the violence is the plot......I understand times continually change....but its so nice to go back to a simpler time where black and white wasnt just on the screen....society had a greater sense of ethics, and moral fiber...and yes even though great progress has been made in many areas since that time....the level of dehumanizing we see today is a sad indictement of what could have been. Its nice to know that our film ingenuity is our own little time machine...that we can board and experience over and over..... Cheers..
I always loved it when Paul would appropriately greet Della as "Hi beautiful". Great series, great characters, stories, clothes, automobiles, ect. Another gem on the show was Ray Collins. Read his bio some time. Started in vaudeville, worked with Orson Wells. He would steal ever scene he was in. Love the show, still watch it today. Raymond Burr, toured with many USO shows around the world to support the troops. If you remember some episodes where Perry had a broken arm. This was real because Raymond Burr (a Canadian) was in a plane crash on one of his USO tours and broke his arm. Talk about the show and how it was regarded amongst his peers. The one and only Bette Davis stood in for Perry on one episode. At one time, Burr was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Great, Great show.
Great video. I was always fascinated with Barbara Hale and her long time role as Perry Mason's legal aide. She was what the personification of a supporting actor/actress should be. She will be forever one of the greatest actresses I ever saw!
In modern times someone of Della intelligence would probably be a attorney. I know the late Lee iacocoa said he had a personal secretary Mary in the 1960s that was smarter than many of his vice presidents at Ford motor company. A different era.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Barbara Hale as Della Street! She was smart, intelligent, and professional and did her job with due diligence!! I never really imagined Della and Perry hooking up I just loved them as really GOOD FRIENDS❤❤💃😁👍👍 Thanks Facts Verse👍👍👍❤😁
I still watch Perry Mason Every day I truly enjoy the chemistry that the two of them had with each other I enjoy watching Paul Burke he was so cool Perry Mason is something worth watching for years to come
I always felt the "unspoken" relationship between "Perry and Della" was there. she went to his apartment, he went to her house, etc. In the movies, there was a lot of clues that showed them together, but living apart. But in the first movie, he had became a judge and she went to work for someone else and they hadn't seen each other for awhile, so it looked like they called it quits until he started defending her, then it was "back on"😍😍😍
My wife and I watch the original Perry Mason series every day. Such a great show with intricate plots. Barbara Hale was a huge reason for its success. There was no possibility of off screen romance, because one, she was married as you mentioned, and two, Burr was gay.
I was a huge Perry Mason fan from an early age and wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up. That didn't happen but I did follow in the footsteps of Della Street (and also my grandma) and became a legal secretary.
No, Earl Rogers was the inspiration for the Perry Mason character. Erle Stanley Gardner was also an attorney but was more noted for being an author. He wrote, among many other things, the Perry Mason stories. Barbara Hale had one of the most fabulous voices on television.
Erle Stanley Gardner played the judge in the final Perry Mason episode. Raymond Burr originally tried out for the role of Hamilton Burger (Hamburger?) while William Talman tried out for the role of Perry Mason. Barbara Hale worked with her son William Katt twice; in the Perry Mason TV movies and she played Ralph's mother on the Greatest American Hero.
Interesting fact, Earl Rogers was born in Perry and his long time assistent was his daughter. No wonder that the thought of a romantic affair between the Perry Mason and his assistent was unpleasant to him.
Yeah it's also nice that when I hit the info button, I can see who the guest stars will be. Most of the old shows on MeTV don't show you that, which is very annoying. The gust stars ar the main reason I watch old TV series.
I remember Barbara Hale. Her son, William Katt was great. She was Mrs.Paul Hinkley, Ralph Hinkley's mom. They did an episode together- Who's Woo In America. Whenever they did the conventions, Mrs. Hale pinched his cheek and said: Isn't he such a good boy? William Katt then said: Mom, Please! Not in front of my fans, Entertainment Tonight, TMZ and Betsy Goodrich and her pets. When she passed away, it really hurts. Thank goodness I helped him come to terms. He even thanked me for my condolences and kind words.😅😊
I am actually sitting on my couch looking at a 1972 "Adam-12" & Barbara Hale/Della Street is on" this also wonderful series" as a mother of a teenage😊 & Ms. Hale acted well in her TV role in black & white, just like on Perry Mason show❤ 🎬😊 I enjoy Perry Mason even today as well as the entire cast😊Barbara showed women that u can be independent, make ur own money by working as a actress, a lawyer, a professional assistant, etc.and look good at it!! 😊 Bravo Ms. Barbara Hale 😊 RIP🌹❤✝️
Interesting video, but Barbara Hale only guest-starred on one episode of Ironside. As for Erle Stanley Gardner, his control over the characters came from the fact that he created them. Gardner was the author of the Perry Mason books. David Ogden Stiers played D.A. Michael Reston in several of the Perry Mason movies. After Burr's death, they brought in Paul Sorvino and Hal Holbrook who played lawyers who were friends of Perry Mason. They did not try to replace Burr as Perry Mason.
I was a fan at a very early age. My parents watched Perry and Alfred Hitchcock, I would sneak out of my room just to watch both. In high school I read every book by Gardner (he wrote under a different name also). I still watch Perry everyday.
@@FactsVerse It's hard to pick a best one. I actually love the two hour movie where he's a judge and he steps down to help Della. It really got to me that he cared that much for a very good friend.

This program was on every week in our house from '57 to '67, my dad being a lawyer and Mom was a big fan of Erle Stanley Gardner's books, of which she had all. I still have them.
Avid fan of the original Perry Mason; the entire cast was so authentically natural. It didn’t seem that one was watching a show; it was real life…. and what was more, no gratuitous -foul language; sex; violence.. It was entertainment at its best. Even enjoyed the made for TV movies……all the stars suited each other👍👍👍
As a teen in those days, I remember William Tallman, the DA Hamilton Burger, was caught in some kind of sex ring and he was removed from the show. If you watched/watch the episodes you'll note a number of guest star DA's taking over the role. I suspect you can Google Tallman to find out.
My Gosh Barbara you had so much Talent...love you backing up Perry Mason...lots of my very very special prayers 4 you and your families...Blessed you..🙏🇺🇸❤🇺🇸🙏❤
Actually, David Ogden Stiers played Perry Mason's foil in some of the early made-for-TV movies; he did not replace Raymond Burr after the latter's death in 1993. Instead, Hal Holbrook and Paul Sorvino took turns as "other" lawyers "filling in" for a "vacationing" Perry for the last six movies.
Have always been a fan of Perry Mason. I especially enjoyed the episodes of the 1950s. It's just something about how they were directed and the storyline. Shalom
That she continued to act as long as she did I knew. She played on Perry Mason and on Ironside but I didn't realize that she continued even longer than that.😮🎉❤❤😮
She was married to William Katt (Bill Williams) an actor who appeared on the show a few times. They were married a long time for Hollywood. He co starred with Betty White in a sitcom A DATE WITH THE ANGELS in 1957
I have Read *Perry Mason books* when I was 10 years Old. Continued to read them again n again over the years. I bought a whole lot of Pocket Books n Others from the Roadside Book Sellers dirt cheap. I still have them 30 years later. Most are not available now. I wish someone would publish fresh Books again. I started watching the *Perry Mason shows on TH-cam* I really enjoy watching them. *Della Street* is my Favourite Character along with *Paul Drake* *Brabara* was absolutely the Right Choice for the role of *Della Street* There is something so Elegant n Loving about her Role. I mean she did a great job. You just had to *Love* her. Thanks for this information. Will continue to watch the Show again.
Missing from the narrative is the story that the network and the producers were keen on updating Perry Mason's secretary with a younger, more contemporary actress. But Raymond Burr would have none of it. He told them that if Barbara Hale was not to be Della Street in the new Perry Mason films then he would simply not be Perry Mason. And that was that.
In the early Perry Mason books, Perry proposes marriage to Della (more than once). She turned him down (each time). She explained that if she were to marry him, he would install her in a house in the suburbs and turn the management of the house and the raising of their kids to her. He'd still focus most of his time and energy on his legal practice. Della wanted to be part of his life and felt she could do that better as his secretary than as his wife.
That was a good show. My wife and I are watching them all now on one of the cable channels. It may be in the old black and white format, but the writing was good -- much better than today's fare, and it's kind of nice to see the time period I grew up in. Those giant "battleship" cars. Good thing gasoline was so cheap back then!!!
Oh, my! I literally DROOL over those cars. I think they're mostly all placed there as "product placement" deals. Also, there are the little "ads" that appear (an early version of "pop ups?") when the end of show credits are running. Stuff like old-time household cleaners and all. I'm 68, so I'm old enough to remember those "old" cars. They wree big as boats when you were inside. I don't think I'd have much trouble living in my car if I had one of those old behemouths. They were so heavilly built they really needed thoee big gas-guzzler engines to get them moving. One of the other things I like about that show is the "classines" and "genteel" "civilized" manner in which most people behaved back then. These days, people think being ignorant and rude is somehow a 'virtue.' @@chrissyyork8646
I was absolutely mesmerized by Perry Mason as a boy in the 1960s, and I enjoy it even more now.... impeccable acting by the superb cast and the stories do not go out of style.
I grew up watching Perry Mason. My grandmother was a huge fan of the show and watched it whenever it was on. She never thought there was anything more than a professional relationship between Perry and Della, and I believe her. Watching the show today, I can see that Perry and Della were friends and cared about each other, but there was no romance in the relationship, because neither would accept it. All of the actors on the show were excellent. As for the movies, I believe David Ogden Stiers played a prosecutor in a few of the shows, and he was also very good and believable in that role.
I still enjoy Perry Mason soooo much! I found a channel on my "Fire stick" that shows back-to-back episodes, beginning with Season 1: Episode 1!! I thought I had seen all the episodes...WRONG! I can definitely say I have now seen 8 MORE episodes that are like brand new (to me)! In so many ways, those were more "simple" times. There were more morals, & manners used by most people! Of course, NO period of time was/is perfect, yet it seems like "those were the days"!😊
In watching the old shows, it is interesting to see the same actors and actresses over and over, sometimes as the murder victim, the defendant or the murderer. Its actually kind of funny.
It's amusing to see the remarks about Burr being interested in Hale offscreen. Another of Hollywood's not so well kept secrets is that Raymond Burr was gay.
I have watched every episode of Perry Mason at least 10 times. I watch it when it's on tv (FETV), Paramount+, IMDB (Freevee), n other streaming services. The show came out when my mom was a child but we watched the reruns with her as kids. I love the show so much, along with many others from then, even tho they started well b4 my time. I still watch bc it takes me back to my childhood n the good days we had. I also love seeing the actors n actresses of Old Hollywood. Shows back then were classy n just made sense. I knew Raymond was gay but I didn't care. U could tell their relationship was implied and that was good enough for me.
An incredible actress, person and friend to those she knew. Deserving of every accolade in every show, especially Perry Mason, who I adored, loved and still hold close to my heart. ( Raymond reminded me of my father, a lawyer with 'slicked' back black hair!!! ) Wonderful actress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
david ogden stiers did not take over the role of perry mason there were 4 movies left on the contract when raymond burr died paul sorvino done the first one and hal holbrook done the last three
Earle Stanley Gardner wrote the Perry Mason novels, beginning in the late thirties. They are easy to read puzzles usually ending in a big courtroom scene. Gardner himself was trained in the law but he wrote for the pulp magazines of the twenties and thirties, mostly detective stories when his first Perry Mason novel became a big seller.
First time I ever saw Perry Mason I was hooked! Have been a fan ever since! I still watch the reruns to this day! Probably will till I leave this world! Earle Stanley Gardner should have let Perry and Della hook up at least before the last episode of the older episodes ! Would have made a lot of fans happy!
I love Perry Mason. All the actors were phenomenal, real pros with terrific and very genuine chemistry and camaraderie. I think that's what truly shines through and still makes it so popular to this day. That plus theres no gratuitous violence and definitely no nudity and sex. Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, William Hopper, William Tallman and the fantastic Ray Collins. I love the show so much I own the complete set and watch it every day on tv. Even the theme song is one of the most iconic. Growing up in the late 50s and early 60s was amazing not least of which was the terrific classic TV shows like Perry Mason.
According to a TV Guide article published in connection with the 1985 TV-movie "Perry Mason Returns," Erle Stanley Gardner, who created the Mason character, hadn't liked the 1930's Warner Bros. Perry Mason films in which Mason and Della Street DID date and ultimately got married. He also hadn't liked the casting of Warren William, a gentlemanly actor, as Mason. Gardner imagined the character as more of a roughneck, and in 1955 he was given a list of three actors to choose from and he chose Raymond Burr. (Alas, the article didn't say who the other two were.) It was likely Gardner's distaste for the 1930's Mason movies that led him to take such a hard line against the TV Mason having any sort of romantic relationship with Della.
Loved the Perry Mason series, the courtroom drama, and the entire cast. If I recall correctly, didn't Hamilton Berger only ever win the one trial over Mason?
He did, but it was later reversed after guest star Julia [Julie] Adams, the hot object of The Creature From the Black Lagoon, was exonerated in another episode.
I agree! It still is great to watch close to 66 years later! My Mom loved this show and I started watching it at around three years old and I have watched it in reruns and would love to own the DVD! The whole shows if possible. Wonderful cast and guest stars including Barbara Eden and Betty Davis❤
They don't write 'em like that anymore. [Greg Kihn]. Great show, especially the early years. Perry always had the latest Ford or GM product, while Paul had the latest sports car. Looking back we see quite a few future Hollywood stars had guest roles on the show at one time or another.
Earl Stanley Garner authored Perry Mason. The character was loosely based on real life attorney Earl Rogers. Also, William Hopper died young, but not from cancer. It was a heart attack.
I love my Perry Mason❤❤ And always loved Della and Barbara Hale❤❤❤❤ I always wanted she and Perry to get married😂☺☺☺☺❤❤❤❤❤❤ One of the greatest shows of all time❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

i still watch the reruns to this day, Barbra was so pretty and capable, i enjoy the old cars, just the whole atmosphire of the show.
My Gosh Barbara you had so much Talent...love you backing up Perry Mason...lots of my very very special prayers 4 you and your families...Blessed you..🙏🇺🇸❤🇺🇸🙏❤
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Barbara. May she find peace 🙏
A bonus to watching Perry Mason is seeing all the old 50's and 60's cars!!!
Love the. Show❤️still watch it. I wish the outfits Barbara wore would still be available to purchase😊
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
I loved the Perry Mason show. I still do
Have always been a fan of Perry Mason. I especially enjoyed the episodes of the 1950s. It's just something about how they were directed and the storyline. Shalom
Love Perry Mason, still watch everyday
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
I've watched every episode. One of the best series ever.

He co starred with Betty White in a sitcom A DATE WITH THE ANGELS in 1957
What a great show, we watched the originals when I was a kid and later the family was happy to watch the new movies, they were all great.
I started watching the *Perry Mason shows on TH-cam*
I really enjoy watching them.
*Della Street* is my Favourite Character along with *Paul Drake*
*Brabara* was absolutely the Right Choice for the role of *Della Street*
There is something so Elegant n Loving about her Role. I mean she did a great job.
You just had to *Love* her.
Thanks for this information.
Will continue to watch the Show again.
I love this show and I love Raymond and Barbara.

Interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info about Perry. What other types of video would you like to see?
Barbara Hale was an absolute beauty! The whole package! Still a total crush of mine!❤️
So true! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
That was a good show. My wife and I are watching them all now on one of the cable channels. It may be in the old black and white format, but the writing was good -- much better than today's fare, and it's kind of nice to see the time period I grew up in. Those giant "battleship" cars. Good thing gasoline was so cheap back then!!!
I agree! It was a great show, my husband and I watch it twice a day. The cars were beautiful. I read the Ford Motor Co. Supplied all their cars too.
I remember my mother watching Perry Mason during the fifties and sixties. Now these are my favorite shows to watch on my fire stick and MeTV.
I was absolutely mesmerized by Perry Mason as a boy in the 1960s, and I enjoy it even more now.... impeccable acting by the superb cast and the stories do not go out of style.
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I grew up watching Perry Mason. My grandmother was a huge fan of the show and watched it whenever it was on. She never thought there was anything more than a professional relationship between Perry and Della, and I believe her. Watching the show today, I can see that Perry and Della were friends and cared about each other, but there was no romance in the relationship, because neither would accept it. All of the actors on the show were excellent. As for the movies, I believe David Ogden Stiers played a prosecutor in a few of the shows, and he was also very good and believable in that role.
Mother of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO..
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
Believe it or not...
Barbara Hale was gorgeous and very talented.
Erle, Stanley Gardner, wrote Perry Mason. He was not based on Earl, Stanley Gardner.
He was based on Earl, Rogers, a famous California attorney.
Famous Texas attorney whose mansion turned hotel is supposedly haunted, the Black something, Swan perhaps?
Loved Barbara Hale everything about her especially the way she carried herself on Perry Mason in which I’ve seen every episode.
We're very happy to know that you're a fan of Barbara. Which of her roles appealed to you the most?
In watching the old shows, it is interesting to see the same actors and actresses over and over, sometimes as the murder victim, the defendant or the murderer. Its actually kind of funny.
I have the full set on DVD. These are great
Yes I'm definitely a fan of the original Perry Mason !
It's amusing to see the remarks about Burr being interested in Hale offscreen. Another of Hollywood's not so well kept secrets is that Raymond Burr was gay.
Thanks for that story as i enjoyed Perry Mason.
You're very much welcome! We're glad to know that you love our video. If we may ask, what other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I'm still watching Perry Mason I love the program I'm watching all the reruns over and over every night
I read one of ESG's Perry Mason novels, and there was a relationship alright, but limited to a long kiss in the car when Perry drove Della home.
I never get tired of watching it 😊
I have watched every episode of Perry Mason at least 10 times.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
They did become great friends.
Attorney Gardner even portrayed a judge in various episodes, based on his own books about the characters
Gardner appeared as a judge only in the final episode, "The Case of the Final Fadeout".
@@kevinmadden1645 yes, thanks for clarifying! I appreciate it!! That was my birth year: 1966!
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info! What other types of video would you like to see?
An incredible actress, person and friend to those she knew. Deserving of every accolade in every show, especially Perry Mason, who I adored, loved and still hold close to my heart. ( Raymond reminded me of my father, a lawyer with 'slicked' back black hair!!! ) Wonderful actress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
david ogden stiers did not take over the role of perry mason there were 4 movies left on the contract when raymond burr died paul sorvino done the first one and hal holbrook done the last three
I love that the video mentions they never hooked up because Hale was married, but not that Burr was gay!
I was and still am a fan I wasn’t aware of the made for tv movies so thanks for making me aware of that
My husband’s favorite show and coincidentally it was always on when he came to pick me up for a date in high school.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! How about you? Which show appealed to you the most?
Didn't know William Katt was B. Hale's son. If I'm not mistaken, he also played a large role in Steven King's original (movie) version of Carrie.
William Katt looks a lot like his Dad Bill Williams. I see Barbara in his face too
Great content and superb narration
David Ogden Stiers did not replace Raymond Burr as Perry Mason. He played the district attorney.
@@davidbarnett9312 Thanks for that info, David.
😅Della seemed like she had been around the block and knew a thing or two about a thing or two very beautiful woman

Great show, one of the best of all time... 😏
I agree! It still is great to watch close to 66 years later! My Mom loved this show and I started watching it at around three years old and I have watched it in reruns and would love to own the DVD! The whole shows if possible. Wonderful cast and guest stars including Barbara Eden and Betty Davis❤
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What is your favorite episode of Perry Mason?
@FactsVerse - Two. The one involving when Paul Drake was framed for murder, and Della also was framed for murder... 😏
I am a fan of Perry Mason and love Ms Barbara Street also beautiful remember l have of there show they don’t do stories like that anymore
We're happy to know that you love the show and Barbara. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
ONE PIC was not her - .Patricia Barry.
@Ms, correct you are; I have suggested numerous times that Blane view these videos BEFORE narrating them.
I understand that Barbara's being married wasn't the only reason there was no hookup between her and Raymond Burr.
I love my Perry Mason❤❤ And always loved Della and Barbara Hale❤❤❤❤ I always wanted she and Perry to get married😂☺☺☺☺❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the greatest shows of all time❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I wish I could pick just one☺❤
I grew up watching the original Perry Mason series with my dad! 😊
Us too! Which episode of Perry Mason appealed to you the most?
I am just viewing season 1 of Perry Mason. So far so good. :).
The earlier seasons are the best …
Barbara Hale’s husband, actor Bill Williams (Wilhelm Katt) appeared in the PERRY MASON episode “The Case of the Crippled Cougar” as defendant, and in “The Case of the Baffling Blast” as the murder victim.
Well Della and Perry did have a romantic relationship in the tv movies
Apart from Barbara Hale being married, another good reason that Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale never got together was because Raymond Burr was gay.
Yes i l9ved all the Perry Mason shows and Della Street.
