Since the mid-20th century, shopping malls has been a important part of suburban life in America. However, like everything else in the suburbs, there is rarely anyway besides automobile to get to and from the mall.
But malls weren't suppose to be like this, the original visions of malls were very different. So what was the original vision, how did it end up the way it is today, and what can we do to fix it? You can find out the answers in this video!

When the malls went to the + shape with sea of cars and a fortress like exterior, it was a real turnoff to most women. It leaves you feeling vulnerable. Parked far from the mall entry and having to walk too far with your child in a stroller or your purse made it something you didn't want to do alone. Then there was also the concern about car theft. Once you were inside, it was claustrophobia inducing with no windows and few exits, giving a creepy vibe with fire or earthquake danger in the back if your mind.
They could still have indoor malls designed in an open box shape but open at the corners with glass door entries that feel friendlier, and window spaces in between stores to make it airier. The center could be low level food bars and seating. In areas where the weather permits and there's no snow, they could go back to the linear design with indoor sidewalks in the front. They could make it a double line of stores and shops with an outdoor garden and seating.
Even if these existed in a 'Strode', they would be easier to access by car or bus than the + shape malls.

Another cause of the decline of malls is the decline in the socioeconomic makeup of the surrounding neighborhoods so that the class of people who patronized a mall wouldn't afford the sorts of goods the mall sold, or worse some of the youthful patrons themselves were ... let's just say problematic.

A garage like structure will work also for Malls, but priorities should be making it less car centric.

The answer to the decline of malls is a reimagining of their locations. We as a nation could save brick and mortar stores by having the courage to use imminent domain to move them from suburbs too squarely on top of freeways. Allow the freeway to roll right through the middle of the mall so that its convenience is undeniable. Turn them into wonders of the world with this integration. Think about it travel is the one thing that will not change. By making the malls completely convenient as well as a national competition for the best design. If malls were made convenient in this manner with light rail and above and below ground parking in abundance with designs based on the history of the location or the city mixed with the variety of housing and public services. Would become the perfect place to stop on your way To work or home as well as traveling in general. It would become just as if not more convenient then Internet shopping

It's such a shame we didn't design towns and cities with only public transport and bicycles/scooters as transport. It's too late to change now :(

big mistake to not make most of them mixed-use retail/residential with multistory construction and incorporated with transit infrastructure

and that could have been done in stages as the mall prospered

Which mall is this? I’m a mall rat and been to nearly every one
Most malls like the Palisades Center Mall, The South Shore Mall, Danbury Mall are all reachable via Bus and Trains only.
Queens Center Mall and Bay Plaza and Green Acres and Roosevelt Field can be accessed by car bus or train, or you can walking them.
We should save every mall in NYC😢😢😢
