  • This week, we have a classic fairy tale from master of the genre Hans Christian Andersen, 'The Little Mermaid'. This is, of course, a very different story to the famous Disney film of the same name. Enchanting, beguiling, tragic, with hints of the morality tale and an absence of singing crabs, it is indeed a fairy tale, but perhaps more of a literary work than that simple title suggests.

Robert, thank you so much for these books. I homeschool my daughters and on the way to our science group every Wednesday, we have been listening to you. It has been a delight. My 7-year old loves the creepy, horror stories, as well as the fairy tales.

I haven't read this story in maybe 55 years ?
I'm just here to find out what his real description of her was because of people arguing about her appearance and whether she was white or not .
I remember for whatever reason always thinking she was white and now that I can't remember this story the fact that it was written by Hands Christian Anderson and 1837 and Denmark I'm just assuming she was white or sort of looked whiteish ... ?
I'm just trying to find out

In the Disney LM fanfic “Beyond The Shore”, there’s a pirate that’s been going around eating the flesh of merfolk (including pregnant ones) under the erroneous belief that doing so will grant him immortality. Melody suggests to her mother, her aunts, and King Triton that perhaps the pirate got the idea from the Hans Christen Andersen story, where Merfolk are stated to not possess souls and turn to seafoam when they die after living a life of 300 years. (to clarify this mind screw: “Beyond the Shore” draws upon continuity from both the direct-to-video movies AND the animated TV prequel series, the latter of which featured H.C. Andersen as a minor character).
Triton’s response to this? “But that’s ridiculous! Every living thing has a soul, and merfolk don’t live any longer than humans.”
Also also, Andersen allegedly wrote this story because he had unrequited romantic/sexual feelings for a straight male friend of his who was engaged to a woman (given that Andersen seemed to have affections for Jenny Lind, it’s my personal theory that he was Bisexual)

The little mermaid draws inspiration from Undine, amd older fairytale written by a different author.
Hans did not like that story one bit, so he wrote the little mermaid to improve the original moral and story.
The thing about his love intetest is not necessarily a primary inspiration for the story, tho I guess it might have influenced him a little, but there are many other things that drove him to wrote this thing.

Looking forward to listening in on this classic. Would be the first time I hear/read it in a translated version, so it'd be interesting to compare it to the original in Danish.
By the way, the author's name is Andersen, not Anderson.
Did you know that while in English he seems to be mostly known under his full name Hans Christian Andersen, in Danish he's always referred to as just H.C. Andersen, including in his fairy tales?

At just before 8 minutes in he describes her holding out her white hands from under the sea .
So for those who are arguing what she looked like and what her color was that answers it .

Are you referring to the Disney version? Disney would never change details from the source material.
