Coming from a place who was involved in the testing of these engines, it is still heart breaking knowing what happened to Holden. I can speak first hand that the VF series was a fantastic car all around. The engineering and enthusiasm that went into building every one of these cars was top notch. Australia had a great car here and then it just all ended. With the LSA, it was the icing on the cake for those wanting the ultimate power package. These engines have more potential in them, and are capable of some serious HP . Thank you for a great review and a thumbs up for an Aussie Icon.
Agreed. I worked at 'General Motors - Holden' for a time as did my whole family. Holden's demise was a result of a number of things. As a bottom line reason, Holden eventually got the Commodore 'right' with the VF model. The problem was that by the time they achieved that, Australians had moved on from the most popular car (the Commodore) in the 80/90's to cheap, crap SUV's and other small car Korean rubbish. As a result, Holden was left holding the ball with a car nobody here wanted anymore. I have to say though that Holden had already dropped the ball in the area of marketing, sticking with an ad agency that failed to produced any impressive advertising for the cars for as long as I can remember. Additionally, Holden should never have dropped the 'General Motors' adage to their brand name. As Aussies became more global names such as Toyota, Mazda, etc where more ingrained than a backwater car manufacturer even though it was home grown. Eventually, Holden asked for money from the federal govt as they had done for years since they were running at a loss, but the Liberal government at the time refused for the first time in 30+ years, saying why should we help you out when Aussies arent even buying your cars anymore? And true to the point, much of Holden's profit by that time was coming from exports from which they (the govt) never benefited. And so came the death knell. It really is sad. Holden ended up producing one of the best 4 door cars in the world for its price point and no-one wanted it anymore. Fortunately for me I picked up a new HSV Clubsport R8 before the shutdown. I've owned it several years and it doesnt miss a beat. I love the car so much I'm about to go a Walkinshaw W547 supercharger, cam exhaust upgrade on her. This car is a keeper.
@@Freedom_Now_2024 If they hadn't stuffed up with the 3.6 motor from the VZ on, the VE would have been a great Aussie legend instead of a liability with the timing chain issue..
The ironic thing about the car having Holden badges is here in Australia lots of Commodore owners change the Holden badges to Chev Bowtie badges. LOL!!!
But it is what Holden does to that Chevy motor that makes it a Holden. The other 95% of this car is all Holden, deigned by Holden engineers for the Aussie market.
Love this review and it makes me proud as an Aussie Holden V8 owner that someone in a foreign country can see what a beauty this car is. Still makes me sad to think there will be no more!
Sad times when Holden closed down. I have one of their HSV's Clubsport R8 2012 (HSV = Holden Special Vehicle) sitting in my garage when I want to get my hoon on. I just smile at the roar and power boost. A little anti-social over 3,000rpm... just like me 😆
Same here... I was genuinely upset the day it happened. 😢 at least my mate that lived in my rental on mofflin in Elizabeth grove got to see the parade of cars go past the house... wish I was able to be there that day
Thanks for this awesome review. Many Aussie car enthusiasts are also saddened that these products are no longer being made. Even the local competitor, the Ford Falcon FGX, was an awesome car. Unfortunately their replacements here in Australia (Opel Insignia) aren't really that inspiring. They lack ... ...soul.
Great review Sarah, refreshing to see an Aussie favorite getting respect in USA. I agree with you, big mistake getting rid of it. What we got now is a joke.
I live in South Australia where this weapon was made. It’s so disgusting how GM shut down Holdens car manufacturing here in Australia... not to mention steeling 120 odd million given to them by the tax payers of Australia. Holden was a true icon of Australia. Love your work Sarah. 😘🤜🏼🤛🏼🇦🇺🍀🍀😎
Yes, it`s a shame that this car (along with the Pontiac G8) was discontinued. They were probably the closest thing to a "Working Man`s BMW M5" in existence. More reliable, too.... Great review !
aussie here, I don't often add a subscribe unless the person/channel is really worthwhile but I have given you one. good content from a genuine rev head lady who can spin spanners. I approve! keep it up.
Sarah, I like the fireworks reference, and you driving this car makes me smile. I know you are close to 400k subs and you probably won't read this, but this popped up in my suggestions recently. I have seen this before and I do own a Holden Commodore SS-V Redline in Australia, and I give it 4 beans too! Except mine does not have the LSA Supercharger...
Built in Elizabeth, South Australia. My hometown. I'd see so many of these everyday coming out of the Holden factory on trucks with the chev badges slapped on every day. 🙂
Another great video. Sarah you're one of my favorite TH-camrs. Love the channel and your personality is just naturally entertaining. I keep the notifications set so I never miss a video.
And now you know why we love our supercharged HSVs and Walkinshaws. (On that note, if you ever come to Australia you should try and hook up a test drive in the Walkinshaw W507)
Sarah, I loved your review. I have a 2016 SS and will definitely look into an LSA supercharger now. Just to see how much fun you are having driving this, well, this is why I got my SS, the fun factor.
I originally came found your channel from the first Chevy SS video you posted. I hope one day your get a permanent LS powered car on your channel. Either way your videos are great and I enjoy watching them. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to upcoming videos.
Evan Field this is pretty much standard on the HSV commodore in Aussie land. HSV is the Holden equivalent of AMG or M power. We also have a ford equivalent called FPV.
Living in New Zealand I've had the ability to enjoy lots of great Holden's. My current Holden is a Holden that's not a Holden. It the 2018 Opel Insignia rebadged, 235Kw V6 AWD and in metallic black it's a gorgoues beast and such an awesome Grand Tourer. It just fair honks. Whilst the noise from V8's are a wonderous thang, my V6 has a sweet rasp to it that never fails to put a smile on my dial.
I`m impressed with your mention of density altitude. As a pilot, I`m very aware of it`s influence on performance. Both power and lift are greatly affected by it. At least there`s no humidity there which is a big factor also. I like your "flooded basement" look at 3:25. bwahaha Good job girl, very good review.
You could buy the same power train in a stock HSV Commodore and even get this in a wagon and a ute. 12.1 stock, with a few mods like exhaust and gears they are easy 11's. The GTS had a stronger drive train and a little shorter gearing. They were Corvette money in Australia 125 k . They built a heap of them to to hang around until we get Camaro''s but they will carry a 40~50K surcharge for RHD. It's a pity the US never got the full range.... Or even a chance to keep its name. Funny review it's difficult to jump in one of these and not want to do burnouts. Cheers
dazaspc forgot to mention the GTSR which is a more race inspired version and started off at $150k but now are at $300k 😮 due to all the dealership mark ups
Nobody is going to buy those at that price. For those to be worth that money it will be 50 years or banana republic money. Once we get some decent cars imported ie a 300C with a hellcat drive train they will be taking up space in Holden dealers Showrooms. They will all want to have a halo car on display because who wants to see a Opel or Daewoo.
Someone send Sarah an F6 Typhoon to review,... Y'know, just so she gets that the power level is 'stock' Downunder :D @Dazaspc - Hell Crate is the search term ;) And still not a bar on Tesla's for similar money to the HSV's.
Nice Troll PIDsMedia I think Sara would fall in love with an XR6T Falcon, better transmission than the Commodore and they drive better as well. HSV is stupid money new at the moment (so are FPV by the way) Sadly the Falcon platform never got LHD. It's a real shame the rest of the world didn't get a chance to see just how good they were. There is a turbo Territory in my driveway (wifes) and it uses more fuel than my 6 liter SS and honestly stock is a bit slower. The thing is the only RWD V8 still on sale in Australia at the moment (under 150K)by a company still in production is the Mopar. 1 in 8 of the people who buy these cars will be prepared to modify it, maybe 1 in 50 would be up for a motor swap? The 300 was never really that popular here due to it's size? I believe that there are significant insurance issues with after market SC cars here.. The Tesla isn't practical in Australia as there are few to none of the fast charge station (let alone charge stations)west of the great dividing range. You cant cross the country in a Tesla in Australia..... Unlike the US, I suppose we will have to go back to 6 cylinders............... Cheers
In Australia we can get a W547 walkishaw package for 20k installed with Warranty , pumps up power to 547kw .Supercharger '' Suspension upgrade ' 6 piston Brakes ' Full cat back Exhaust system '
Ben Chesterman you can get way more power out of it if you do the work yourself and bolt on a turbo and do all those same mods for less than 20 grand these engines can expand out greater kw than 547
Have 2015 with Holden badging. White with Black roof. Looks great and will now put a supercharger on it after watching this video. Thanks Douglas Baumgartner.
Oh my... love the camera shake on startup. That little shimmy and shake mine does on startup never gets old. Once mine is out of warranty, I will likely add a cam+headers+tune. Not as big on doing the blower... but a wicked up N/A LS? Oh heck yeah.
The Garret Mitchel eagle reference was funny. Seems *feel the freedom* / *let the eagles fly* , is realized within this SS review. A whole lotta vehicle to control, being a rear wheel traction 600HP machine, (while in go-peddle floor-mash mode). Thanks, extra fun.
Glad you had a blast in it. 600hp is no joke! You know the score. 4 beans, not bad not bad. I know you liked ragging on it. As fun as it was, probably didn’t want to return it.
As an Aussie, I noticed some familiar looking Chevvies used by the Saudi Arabian Police. My business host explained that the Police liked Commodores becauue they were developed for hot environments. But GM had to use the Chevvie badge.
just saw this video, i had a 2007 Z06 I had to sell due to health issuers, but i wanted a nice car to replace it. I tried the Caddy CST V but it just didn't feel right. Then i found this 2015 SS and wow it was so easy to drive. But after a bit i thought the car was too heavy. And needed a little help. So i added Eibach coil springs which also lowered it 1 inch. A pair of BRM trailing arms of thicker steel and harder bushings, then i found a fella that sells LSA Kits for $5,000 and bought that too. I added Methanol injection and the water intercooler. Stock cam, exhaust, but a new tune to adapt the PCM to the boost. I used the stock pulley to get 9 PSI, but worried about the lack of gauges. So i added three gauges Oil Pressure, Fuel Pressure and of course Boost. centered over the middle dash speaker area. Now after about 1,000 miles i think i had found the perfect retirement cruiser. Little over 500 HP really helps the heavy car although as you know the car drives nimble. Factory mufflers sounds real nice with 9 PSI. It seems you would AGREE, the SS is one hell of a ride.
Good review but in Australia we also have three others to choose from a station wagon , a ute (sedan based pick up ) and HSV ( holden special vehicles ) the HSV was supercharged I have the ute and love it ust for the sound of the v8
I am in Sydney Australia and have a VE S/S sports wagon. Perfect combination if you have a family and still want to have a beast when you put your foot down. Sad now that Australian made Holden is gone.
Nearly. The FG XR6T is a way better family car - much bigger interiour, comfy 3 adults across the rear seat, much bigger boot, and 10L/100kms. I have a 800hp version.
Outside of the emblems, I have plans to LSA,cam,CAI,and torgue converter my 2017 SS, it's a great car, one of a kind, wouldn't trade it for any other 4 door sports sedan.
A customer of ours has an LS3 Commodore, supercharged, cammed, tuned etc, his makes around 700 wheel. I never thought that you could have too much for street use, but I was wrong, It's absolutely INSANE!
My recommendation would be doing a transmission drain on that thing every couple thousand miles especially if you're getting it up high speeds like that and that you're chopping it
i have an LSA and auto from a VF GTS in my Nissan Patrol. absolutely love it. easy to get parts and people know how to tune it. but others like sticking a 6.6 duramax in them. too tight a fit and most of the support to run them has to come from the US.
These Australian Chevy SS are built very well and the technology in these cars are the most I've ever seen they have more Tech in them than any Mercedes Lexus BMW Audi
Glad you like my daily driver, here in South Africa we call it the Lumina SS. The only thing I don't overtake is the garage, even when I have filled up I'm looking for the next gas station. Great review, but I am a little bias towards the car, but you did a great job as always. Now for the EVO..............LOL
I'm a little bemused about what you said about your fuel. I drive a 2011 SS Commodore and she always gets 98 which you can get at nearly every servo. I'm glad you like our cars. It's a shame we don't build them anymore.
fkn awesome vid/review/driving. from micky / Elizabeth South Australia where the Holden was made. The last two models of the 'v' series are top/fun cars including ripping thru peak hour traffic with ease hahaha, anyway great vid.
There was no point in removing the SS badges because here in Australia that Car is a Holden Commodore SS but that point being made with the Supercharger it would be a HSV GTS.
Today GAS in ANAHEIM Ca. 87 octane at a Shell station--$4.49, 89 octane-$4.65 a gallon, 91 octane-$4.81 a gallon. GAS PRICES IN CA. SUCK, AND THAT'S WITH 10% ETHANOL IN IT.
I still have my 2004 VY Wagon. It's up best car I've ever owned. I hate to get rid of it, but we'll getting too difficult to maintain it with spare parts. Were I in Australia, where parts are plenty, it would up a different story.
Great review (just found it on TH-cam) even though I have been following this channel for years. I even named my Forrester GUMP also 🤣 My 2012 HSV Clubsport R8 just puts a smile on my face and sounds very anti-social when hitting the pedal to the metal
The wagon with the lsa is fun to drive and the maloo ute. You should do a trip to Australia one day. There is a guy in denver that converts holden and hsv models to suit the US. Love the content 😊
Thank you, Australia. You're the only other country that ever really "got" the V8 muscle car, and you did it proud.
Coming from a place who was involved in the testing of these engines, it is still heart breaking knowing what happened to Holden. In Brazil we got some of those Holdens badged as Chevrolet Omegas, they were great, not owning anything to other imports.

I love my Holdens , i worked for a Holden dealership as an apprentice in Perth and my first car was a HOLDEN LJ GTR , RIP HOLDEN
Bet you wish you still had it now thankfully I still have my Torana Hatchback
just saw this video, i had a 2007 Z06 I had to sell due to health issuers, but i wanted a nice car to replace it.
I have a 2013 HSV GTS LSA 6 speed manual, its hard to keep the smile off your face when you drive it.
My recommendation would be doing a transmission drain on that thing every couple thousand miles especially if you're getting it up high speeds like that and that you're chopping it
Man that car is clean. I usually don’t like white but this one is on point.
Every time you give it the beans sounds like living in Sydney australia on weekends.
i have an LSA and auto from a VF GTS in my Nissan Patrol. absolutely love it. easy to get parts and people know how to tune it. but others like sticking a 6.6 duramax in them. too tight a fit and most of the support to run them has to come from the US.
Even the scenery you're driving through looks like you could be in the Australian outback. Thought you might go all Mad Max on us !
Holy f*ck that thing is C-L-E-A-N! Great job as always! Cheers from Italy!
These Australian Chevy SS are built very well and the technology in these cars are the most I've ever seen they have more Tech in them than any Mercedes Lexus BMW Audi
Good luck with channel. Doing great so far!
I'm an Aussie, and own a 2012 VE V HSV GTS with mods. Glad you enjoy the VF. Pity you don't get the CLUBSPORT or GTS or GTS-R or GTS-R W1
The GTS-R W1 is fucking amazing. I'd love to see someone here in the states take a wrecked ZR1 Vette and swap the engine into one to make it.
Aussie here. I have 2017 white SSV redline. My uncle has gold 2017 W1.
3:25 and 4:03 basements were flooded. Good review, seems like a fun car
Yes the Commadore did come with this power train , in HSV form from the factory ..
It was an extremely sad year in Australia when Holden and Ford closed their doors in 2016. The Commodore and Falcon are part of Australian culture.
*2017 for Holden
In Australia we have same car in clubsport R8 model and standard LSA supercharger on them just not on SS model
How did the holden commodore get in to the U.S and the fpv gt not alound in the U.S I do not get it 🤔🤔
Great review (just found it on TH-cam) even though I have been following this channel for years. I even named my Forrester GUMP also 🤣
My 2012 HSV Clubsport R8 just puts a smile on my face and sounds very anti-social when hitting the pedal to the metal
best car revue ever!
Love the review Sarah good to see beautiful lady who loves cars
I own one of these and I love it. Unfortunately they don’t make them here anymore and as such, the price for them has gone up considerably.
started following you since the s-10, keep up the good work. P.S. your Super cute!
Great, high quality video. You're doing a good job.
The wagon with the lsa is fun to drive and the maloo ute. You should do a trip to Australia one day. There is a guy in denver that converts holden and hsv models to suit the US. Love the content 😊
Oh yeah, Left Hand Utes over in Denver. They marry Ute bodies to either Chevy SS or Pontiac G8 internals. Doug DeMuro reviewed one such Ute.
