Album Rankings: Avril Lavigne | Pop Dissected Podcast
Welcome to another Pop Dissected Podcast, everybody! In anticipation for Avril Lavigne’s new album, “Love Sux”, coming out at the end of next month, I wanted to give my take on her discography thus far.
In recent years, Avril has really steered into a more indie-pop sound, with her self-titled album and “Head Above Water”. But of course, she’s known for her classic pop-punk-rock-post grunge awesomeness seen on “Let Go”, “Under My Skin” and “The Best Damn Thing”.
Even “Goodbye Lullaby” treads into that territory ever so slightly, but of course that is Avril’s most differentiated record, what with it being very acoustic. A quick disclaimer, I’m a fan of Avril. Little Black Star all the way!
So these rankings are not a “worst to best”, as each album offers something great about it. These are simply my opinions on what I think works the best for each effort she’s put on. These rankings are really my only opinionated content, and I encourage you to share your rankings and viewpoints in the comments! We’ve got six albums to get through, so let’s get into it.

Personally, my favorite Avril album by far is goodbye lullaby. I love almost every song on that album and listen to them frequently. My favorite songs on the album are remember when, push, stop standing there, darlin and wish you were here

I really like the message in "Push". Very applicable especially when you're actively in a relationship - haha! "Darlin" is also such a sweet song. Just wow!

imo, i only got into avrils music when she dropped the head above water single, ofc had heard her big singles before that but my ranking would be (from best to worst)
    1. Let Go: This is the first album I decided to visit when discovering her discography and I immediately got nostalgic from the singles. That being said, I think this album did the best job in providing album tracks that futhered her vision and it felt cohesive without feeling boring and repetitive. Standouts: Losing Grip, Complicated, Sk8ter Boi, I'm With You, Mobile and Unwanted.
    2. Under My Skin: I went into this album pretty blind as I wasn't particularly familiar with any of the singles. She did a great job with improving upon her sound, the increase angst works for me. However, the album does lack in terms of standouts - although I do enjoy the vibe of the album altogether. Standouts: Forgotten, He Wasn't and Don't Tell Me.
    3. Head Above Water: The only Avril album that I've been able to listen to on release. The first half of this album is superb; Head Above Water (the perfect comeback single), Birdie and I Fell In Love With the Devil are all some of my favourite songs by Avril. Unfortunately, the rest of the album really doesn't do the first half justice and I rarely revisit the album as a whole.
    4. Goodbye Lullaby - even though I wasn't a big of hers, I still vividly remember this era of hers for some reason. I don't care for the album too much but i do like some songs, probably need to revisit as i can't remember it too well. Standouts: Alice, Smile and What the Hell (the singles ik)
    5. Avril Lavigne: I really lack a connection. to this album and it's possibly my least listened to album by Avril as it feels more like a compilation of songs she made at the time as opposed to an era in itself. I do have some favourites on this album though; Let Me Go, Rock N Roll and her How You Remind Me Cover
    5. The Best Damn Thing: honestly can't even remember if i've heard this album before but i do like the singles.
    ----
Also, I haven't liked either of the songs released ahead of the Love Sux album which is unfortunate, they both sound really generic to me and inauthentic. Definitely not songs that will be revisited in a decade like some of her other previous singles have.

"Let Go" absolutely just seeps nostalgia in every single song, it's impeccable. Do agree "Under My Skin" falls short on real standout tracks; to me it hardly has any. "Head Above Water" does seem to drag as we get to the latter half, I think if the tracks we rearranged it could give a better fluctuation with its energy for sure. "GL" I don't care for either 😭but there's a pocket full of tracks I like! You have an interesting viewpoint on her self-titled, what with the "compilation" comparison and I can definitely see why you think that. As for "TBDT" - LOL.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share all your thoughts!!

I really enjoyed listening to this and it’s nice to see someone with different opinions on Avril.
I’ve been a major fan my whole life so I really struggle to rank her albums, especially since cohesion has always been her weakest point meaning each album has major strengths but also major weaknesses. Avril Lavigne could easily be her best album for me with a couple tracks dropped - same story for Head Above Water. Can’t wait for Love Sux because it seems she might have sorted that this time round.

    • @popdissected4400

I totally agree the point about cohesion! I'm really excited for "Love Sux", I think the sound so far is really nice. Very "Avril" lyrics, haha. I can't wait to hear more though.

@@popdissected4400 For a while, I was quite worried because actually my favourite sound from Avril is her most acoustic stuff.
Falling Fast is my favourite track. I’ve always loved Goodbye Lullaby, songs like Hush Hush, Give You What You Like, Why, Tomorrow, Innocence etc. but I’ve really enjoyed the singles from Love Sux and although I’ve been a fan for so long - this is the first time she’s ever done a proper era (AL and HAW weren’t done properly, in my opinion) and I’ve been old enough to really appreciate things. Can’t wait to see what she does and I hope it’s as successful as she deserves.

oooh, love this. This is mine and my favourite single and non-single:
    1. The Best Damn Thing (Girlfriend - Runaway)
    2. Under My Skin (My Happy Ending - Freak Out)
    3. Goodbye Lullaby (What the Hell - Not Enough, should have been a single)
    4. Let Go (Complicated - Too Much To Ask) Also Get Over It from the B-Sides should have been in the album, period.
    5. Head Above Water (I Fell in Love With the Devil - It Was In Me, should have been a single)
    6. Avril Lavigne (Let Me Go - Bad Girl, without the featuring)
Hoping, praying, manifesting that Love Sux gives me everything I need, and that it at least had one (1) SOUL CRUSHING rock ballad, I love those.

Oooh, nice! Okay, if I were to pick my fav single and then non-single...
      * "Let Go" ("Mobile" & "My World") Apparently "Mobile" was a regional only single, released in 2005? This album had a lot of regional singles apparently.
      * "Under My Skin" ("Nobody's Home" & "Slipped Away")
      * "The Best Damn Thing" (title track & "One of those Girls")
      * "Goodbye Lullaby" ("What The Hell" & "Darlin'")
      * "Avril Lavigne" ("Rock N Roll" & "17") and "17" totally should have been a single!
      * "Head Above Water" ("Tell Me It's Over" & "Souvenir")
I'm so stoked for "Love Sux" and am hoping she can balance the emotions on the record!

    Woo nice! My ranking is:
    1. Under My Skin: Ranking #1 and #2 was so difficult. However, Under My Skin carried my teenage years (in all its angst), so I couldn't let it not be #1. I think it's perfection, cohesive and emotional - both the ups (the anger in Forgotten, He Wasn't, Don't Tell Me and My Happy Ending) and the downs (the sadness in songs like Slipped Away, Nobody's Home, How Does It Feel and Fall to Pieces) and even some crossover tracks like Take Me Away and Together that combine the both of them. I don't know what else to say haha
    2. The Best Damn Thing: This was my very first Avril cd. I got it for free when I got my second cellphone. It's also so cohesive in that it perfectly embodies the pop-punk that Avril is known for. Let Go has all the hits, but this one is more on par with the kind of look/sound Avril is known for.
    3. Let Go: Her debut album. Might surprise you how low it was placed for it being THE iconic debut album, but I personally gravitated more to the uptempo, harder side of Avril's music. So it's no surprise that my favorite tracks off of this one are Losing Grip and Unwanted. Over the years I did get to know it better after listening to it more, but I still gravitate more towards the second and third album.
    4. Goodbye Lullaby: The first era that I've actively followed. When it first came out I wasn't too thrilled with it. I thought it had its moments, like Wish You Were Here, What The Hell, Alice, Black Star, but I thought it did have a lot of filler and, honestly, to a degree I still agree with that statement. This album, though, is the most like Let Go that we've had Avril be since, well, Let Go (so it goes against the whole Melissa theory haha).
    5. Avril Lavigne: Honestly, with this era I was not active that much, because in that period I was more into pop and stuff, so I didn't pay it too much mind. Also, I thought Here's to Never Growing Up and Rock N Roll were too produced and perfect, which I didn't really appreciate - at the time. Also, I thought Hello Kitty was awful. I did always like Bad Girl. But overall, I didn't listen to it a lot and still haven't really all that much. I might have to update this ranking once I've listened to the last two some more. When I listened to it back in the day, it reminded me of Demi Lovato's DEMI; perfect production, but a lot of filler and the perfection is almost a disadvantage to the songs' datedness, because they all FEEL so 2013.
    6. Head Above Water: I thought the title track was a beautiful ballad and I Fell in Love With the Devil was catchy, wasn't too keen on Tell Me It's Over, and thought Dumb Blonde was a weird track haha, but still haven't really listened to the album in full, so I can't put it higher, because I personally haven't even come around to that.
I can't wait for Love Sux! Probably do have to catch up on those last two before we get there though haha! Based on what I heard from Love Sux, I think it might come for the top 3 for me as well yeah!
EDIT: I 100% agree with (your review on) Goodbye Lullaby (though I would rank it way higher than a 4 out of 10), especially with it feeling like one big song. Needless to say - as my ranking already makes clear haha - I do not agree with Under My Skin and The Best Damn Thing of course haha. But I do think we listen to her music differently though, which makes it understandable why you put those at the bottom and I put them at the top. For me, while lyrics are definitely important, production is also really important and how the production makes me feel. So an example like Forgotten has simple lyrics, but if there's ever a song to personify anger it's this one - you can feel it everywhere, from the heavily distorted power chords to the grave feeling the song has to Avril's angry vocals.

Woweee I love you've taken the time to share all your thoughts! I love how you've pointed out how personal some of these albums are to you - definitely makes me rethink my ranking for sure! I never looked at "Under My Skin" in that way in terms of its emotional spontaneity, which for sure would make sense for her age at the time! It's great to hear other people's thoughts because we all do listen to music differently, so it's cool to hear how others interpret it. I'm SO excited for "Love Sux" too.

My favourite Avril Lavigne album is easily "Under My Skin" followed directly by "Let Go". I'm not really looking forward to her soon coming album Love Sux. The sound of the already released singles is really generic and feels inauthentic. They have this Blink-182 rip off sound that Travis Barker seems to force on every artist he signs or collaborates with. I wish she would dive deeper in a more mature sound that leaves enough space for fun moments. Bluesrock (or rock with country elements) or Grunge/riot girrrl punk for an example. Especially the last one would give her the chance to write thoughtfull ballads with more darker themes and more screamy, more fun tracks while also furthermore exploring a sound she has already laid the groundwork for on past albums.

It's been a while since I've heard Avril's albums as a whole but i'd say let go > under my skin > the best damn thing > head above water > goodbye lullaby > self titled. I really hope love sux doesn't fall into the pop-punk generic wave that's been going around but that new song with Blackbear makes me worry. I know she can do SO much better.

Hahahaha in China, Goodbye Lullaby and the self-titled one are way bigger than the first three one ...and Head Above Water was the third best-selling album by western female artist in 2019, beside Lover and Thank You Next. In my opinion, all the tracks from the first two album are "stands out". Her third album is deep and fun at the same time. Her fourth album shows different sides of her and contains many powerful N vulnerable ballads. Her fifth and sixth are just mistreated and underated.

I have mixed feelings about Love Sux. It seems well polished with a concept in mind, a budget & the throwback sound to emo/screamo stuff is cute. At the same time it does feel like she is trying to recapture her old fame & fanbase and it seems a little forced. I dont know if I will be able to jam out to it and enjoy it. It really depends on if there are heartfelt tracks on it or not like It Was In Me and Wish You Were Here. I kinda wish she did two EPs instead, one with this super pop punk emo & polished sound she is going for and the other more acoustic and stripped back.

I love Avril Lavigne, her lyrics are just great(most of them, lets not talk about Hello Kitty).
    Id do:
1-Let Go. Complicated and Im with you are 2 of my favourite songs ever, andd then Losing Grip which is my favourite
2-Avril Lavigne(self titled). HTNGU is yet again one of my favourite songs ever! Rock N Roll is part of my childghood and I love the MV for it. Let me go is really good and Bitching summer and You aint seen nothing yet are awesome, I also love Give you what you like.
3-Head Above Water. No song in this album is bad in my opinion. Tell me its over and Head above water were my favourites, but now Birdie and Souvenir are really growing on me. Bigger Wow I find it different but great and I fell in love with the devil is pretty good. As for warrior, I feel this song shows exactly what she felt during her hospitalisation. I love it
4-TBDT. What you said about it is accurate but I still like most of the songs in here. I grew up with songs like Girlfriend, I can do better, Runaway and I dont have to try so Im in love with them. I also really enjoy Hot and Everythings buck but you, but my favourite is Keep holding on.
5-Goodbye Lullabye. I´ll make this one quick, I LOVE Push and Smile, I like What the hell but it feels like it was manufactured to become Girlfriend 2.0, I really like Wish you were here, as for the other songs, Im ok with them
6- Under my skin. Controversial I know, but I dont remember most of the songs as outstanding to me. I do love My happy ending and He wasnt, then I enjoy Dont tell me and my favourite is Slipped away, but then, no song really stuck in my head, maybe if I re-listen to them I´ love them, but as of right now I think its the least good album

“The best dam thing” is her best album. “When you’re gone” is THAT song I also love her fourth album “Goodbye Lullaby” sadly it didn’t do well and the gp wrote her off because all of the songs are all pop rock. That’s what I liege about her fourth studio effort it’s different than what we’re used to. Now “Luv Sux” is a pop punk MASTERPIECE I’m so glad that she’s back. She only stayed relevant through the people she inspired (don’t come at me it’s true) I wouldn’t call her a legend yet like some of her other fans do. She still has dues to put in. I’m so glad that she’s healthy now but now she’s underrated like think about she and her moment and she DOMINATED now with her new album no one is talking about it.

    My Ranking:
    7. Self Titled Album
    6. Love Sux (so far)
    5. Head Above Water
    4. The Best Damn Thing
    3. Goodbye Lullaby
    2. Let Go
    1. Under My Skin
Let Go and Under My Skin albums are skipless for me so there's a tendency that they will interchange with each other.
Goodbye Lullaby showcases more Avril's heavenly vocals here and I love it.
The Best Damn Thing majority of tracks are full of tricky, upbeat, fun, and catchy elements which I also loved and at the same time, her ballads in this album such as Innocence and I Will Be really captured my attention and emotions.
Head Above Water, her comeback album, I love it for it's personal and romantic touches which I accepted and considered since she battled with Lyme disease that almost stole her life.
Love Sux, her upcoming album, I put it to number 6 so far because even though I love and bopping the first two singles off this album, it never captures my expectation and satisfaction so I will wait for February 25th to come maybe there's a chance that this album would rise to my ranking.
Self Titled Album, I love it and hate it at the same time... I love HTNGU, R&R, Let Me Go, GYWYL, Hush Hush, and 17. On the other hand, I hate Bad Girl and Hello Kitty eventhough I'm bopping to them hahaha; maybe, there's a lack of touch and perfection in it.
Overall, all her albums are BOPS, coming from an LBS fan. Maybe, her weaknesses in lyricism and execution really affected the whole placement of it.

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I do agree about the execution and lyricism. Another posted comment stated how those have been two of Avril's "weak" points, alongside cohesion. Now, I think cohesion only really matters when looking at an album _as a whole_ , rather than just enjoying songs from it, having favorites etc. I know for me, her cohesion has been the primary factor that contributes to my difficulty in ranking.

Even though I’m a huge fan up beats and more, idk, mood lifting songs 😂, I enjoyed much more Avril’s more introspective works so far.
    1. Absolutely Head above water. The only album that was dropped after I became a true fan of her. There are some songs that could have been better honestly, but the title track, It was in me, IFILWTD and Warrior (to name a few) are some of my all time favorite and most important songs.
    2. Goodbye lullaby. Despite not being an album you wanna listen to everyday (unless you’re trying to cry all day, lol), it’s an emotional masterpiece. I can clearly hear all the emotions Avril felt during her first divorce, and this album really marked a sign in her career, showing the world how much she is versatile and deep in her songs. I agree about What the hell and Smile not really being perfect here, but I love them anyway 😂.
    3. Now it’s hard because I really like all her other albums but they are not my favorites, maybe because of a matter of genre.
I’d put Under my skin, because I love her darker side coming up and throwing all of her creativity to us, especially on songs like Take me away, My happy ending and Nobody’s home.
    4. Avril Lavigne. Her less cohesive record, but has some gems I’m in love with, as Rock n Roll, Let me go, Hello heartache, Give you what you like, Hush hush... maybe it should have been better to change her style though, back in 2013, after her great change with Goodbye lullaby.
    5. The best damn thing. I agree with almost everything you said here! It’s a good album, a very iconic one (but c’mon, everyone by her is🥰), but it lacks of depth. Some songs don’t really fit the general mood, and idk, compared to her other works, I don’t see much apart from the amazing fun!
    6. Let go. GREAT unpopular opinion ahah. I believe this record is really iconic and important, being a cultural reset back at the beginning of her career. I just don’t get all the hype it still gets though... I don’t know, maybe because of lack of aesthetic, or in general being it much more punk rock than pop, but as much as I love a lot of songs (first of all “I’m with you”), it’s apparently my least favorite one 🙃😂

"HAW" honestly made me fall in love with Avril again, so I totally get your perspective. Your comment on "Goodbye Lullaby" made me rethink my own ranking, but of course I looked more at execution rather than intent. I do agree though that it did offer versatility and showcase she can do things other than pop-punk-rock songs! Self-titled is interesting because after "Goodbye Lullaby" didn't do too hot, I'm sure her label wanted to push her more into what she was in 2007, but it produced this mish-mash of songs that are pretty fun, albeit disjointed as hell. As for "TBDT", Avril stated the songs weren't really personal and she just made them...to make them. Which I think shows, however the fact she still made such fun songs that were really made to be "just songs", is pretty dope! As for "Let Go" being DEAD LASSST??? I will give you a pardon 🤚

    2. Let Go (Favs: Complicated, Why, Sk8ter Boi, Losing Grip, Mobile, Anyhting but Ordinary, and I'm With You is the best song of her career in my opinion, the filler is My World)
    3. The Best Damn Thing (Favs: Hot, Girlfirend, Runaway, Keep Holdin' On, Everything Back but You, Inoccence, I Will Be, the filler is One of those Girls)
    4. Head Above Water (Favs: The title track, Tell Me It's Over, IFILWTD, Dumb Blonde, Birdie, Souveneir, Crush, Warrior, It Was in Me, the filler Bigger Wow)
    5. Goodbye Lullaby (Favs: Not Enough, 4 Real, Black Star, Smile, Wish You Were Here, Alice, the filler her cover of Bad Reputation)
    6. Avril Lavigne (Favs: 17, Falling Fast, Bitchin' Summer, , Hello Kitty (yeah i like Hello Kitty fight me!), Rock N Roll, Hush Hush, Let Me Go, Give You What You Like, her cover of How You Remind Me, the filler is Sippin' on Sunshine (gosh i hate that song)

I like how you included what you felt where fillers!
      - "I Always Get What I Want" definitely fits the bill - hahah. I have a love/hate relationship with that song.
"- I'm With You" is definitely one of her best songs, but I'll have to disagree on "My World!" I lovvvveeee that song! It's very 2000s.
      - I can see why "One of those Girls" could be seen as a filler. I do like the interesting subject matter, not a lot of songs like it!
      - Yeah, "Bigger Wow" is very...it's fun, catchy and cute. But in comparison to what we have on the album, it's 🤷‍♀️
      - Okay but her cover of "Bad Reputation" SLAPS! I think it was the perfect song for her to cover 🙌
      - "Sippin' on Sunshine" is another love/hate for me. I kid you not, I originally thought the lyrics were "and just a little piss, and when it hits my lips, I'm sippin on sunshine" 💀 I was like?? AVRIL? HELLO?!

My Ranking may be a bit controversial to some but I am gonna do it and here's my disclaimer:
I've been a little black star for almost a decade so don't come for me if your fav album is on bottom or something I LOVE ALL HER ALBUMS DUH so ye:
    6. AVRIL LAVINGE (2013)
I used to think this album is the mixture of songs that make up the AVRIL LAVINGE we know for and I still think that's kinda of the point of the whole record. This album is pretty messy when it comes to different scopes of songs just not fitting in one whole a** pot. Like there's literally Hush Hush and hello kitty in one album. It's the incohesiveness that is a bit jarring for me to listen, that's why it's at the bottom for me BUT there are a lot of standouts from this album:
The ballads (Give you what you like, hello heartache and falling fast being the standouts) the grunch of Bad girl and upbeat nature of You ain't seen Nothin' yet and here's to never growing up. Overall it's a solid album for me but because of the points I've mentioned, I'll give it 6/10. Still it's an Avril record and it's fun but I think it is Avril's "ARTPOP" type of album (no comparisons to gaga or Avril just saying that both albums are just incohesive when it comes to a specific style or theme, still love both albums)
    5. The best damn thing (2007)
This album is an actual whiplash of a listen. I do see why some people thought it was so immature of her to put out a record like this at age 23. Also having beautiful ballads on this type of record make it even more confusing Tbh but I still love em SM. I feel like this album In general and some "pop hits" of Goodbye lullaby (I'll explain that in a bit) felt really brash. Like comparing the whole album to her new songs; "Bite me" & "Love it when you hate me" you can see that Avril feels natural in her skin in those 2 songs. Not saying she isn't proud of the best damn thing it's just felt like a rough cut especially following under my skin so yeah... Despite the negatives of the best damn thing it is still a fun don't give fucks listen if you are feeling like a badass. Everything back but you is a punk masterpiece and The fun songs: runaway, I don't have to try girlfriend, hot and contagious are carrying the whole album a lot. I won't mention ballads cause Avril makes them into wine so yee. Overall, Brash but fun. 6.5/10
    4. Goodbye lullaby (2011)
Here's a thing, I think this album was pretty much sabotaged by her label. I actually think it would have been a perfect follow up from her brash pop divaesc era of the best damn thing to showcase that she was maturing. It's the singles that ruined the album (except for wish you were here) What the hell and smile are fun as hell but them being first 2 songs after 4 year hiatus with no music out...? Yeah RCA should be cancelled. I do see your points tho about her writing, it is really not her best lyrically but her voice really excels in a lot of the emotional songs from this album: Not enough, Everybody hurts, Remember when and Alice being the highlights for me while the happier songs like stop standing there and push are fun. This record could've been much better if it wasn't sabotaged by the label. Overall it used to be my Avril Lavigne album but as time went on I did kinda overplayed it but it deserves its justice and better Overall. It's a 7/10 For me.
    3. Head above water (2019)
This album is her best of what she has released recently, we've got a lot of storytelling in this album ever since Let go, but this time with a grown up perspective. This comes after 6 year hiatus from music and after battling the Lyme disease. Even tho there are flaws like a jarring transition to dumb blonde (but I get why she included it cause girl needed to leave that motherfucker) and her pronunciation in Goddess 🤣🤣🤣 GIRLLLLL when I first heard it I was like was she joking all alonggg. (No kidding) but this album is something I THINKKK what Avril visioned for both Goodbye lullaby and her self-titled album and I think it is an improvement. The whole album tells a whole ass journey of Avril dealing with Lyme disease and I think metaphorically it pretty much about it. The devil could be the disease in I fell in love with the devil. Idk that may be far fetching but it's amazing how well she constructed this album (STILL BITTER SHE DIDN'T INCLUDE LIGHTS OUT AGH)
    Overall 8/10 for me
    2. Let go (2002)
This being released in 2002 when female artists were trying to be shmexy and glamourous was the perfect timing for Avril to show that you can be yourself and still be known without trying any specitcal. This is one of her best albums for a reason and it's relatability in lyrics. She pretty much owned the 2000's generation of teens with this album as she should. There are no skips for me and it's just a good feel album.
    10/10
    1. Under my skin (2004)
Yep... Under my skin takes THE SKIN for being my favourite album of hers. It's so complex when it comes to lyricism of darker topics discussed throughout the record I just love how angry and dark it sounds. It fits her so well and I think this album is an absolute Grunch masterpiece. My 8th grade emo self remembers blasting this album when I was mad at everyone HAHAH but yeah. Under my skin Avril can own me anytime.
    13/10 heheh
    Overall:
    6. AVRIL LAVINGE
    5. The best damn thing
    4. Goodbye lullaby
    3. Head above water
    2. Let go
    1. Under my skin

I think the take that her self titled offers collections of tracks that make Avril who she is, is very interesting! I've yet to hear that, so that is pretty cool! But agreed, the disjointed nature can be quite baffling for some.
"The Best Damn Thing" offers great fun, but the brash nature isn't for me either. I think she may have tired to 'up the ante' of edginess following "Under My Skin" ... but it's very immature. However, it's still a thrill of a listen.
"GL" was doomed from the start. Her label wanted to replicate the success of "Girlfriend" to no avail, thus likely hand a huge hand in reworking the final production of many songs. The pop singles were demanded by her label - thus misrepresenting the album and upon audiences listening to it - they didn't get what was advertised.
Def agree "HAW" was a genre and type of record Avril wanted to make for a long while - her label just wouldn't let her. "Let Go"? Explained perfectly. I totally get what you mean about "Under My Skin". While not my favorite, the dark nature of it does have a very specific type of allure to it.
