Ah, folks tend to forget what a great time for music was in the mid 80s to early 90s in that brief swell after hair metal and glossy pop and before grunge. Gen X had such a gorgeous eclectic outpouring of diverse and beautiful music.
Back in 1991 in Brighton Michigan my senior year, this girl in my senior high-school class had a shirt that said Poi Dog Pondering. I always wondered what kind of music it was, never heard it. Just now the name popped in my head and I typed it in, and this came up. This is my first time hearing it. Not at all what I expected.
Hey. I hope you check out more of their music. They have REALLY evolved as a band. After Hawaii, they were based in Austin for a short time. For the past 30 years they’ve been based out of Chicago. Each location helped their music grow. In Chicago, there is still the jam band feel, but a strong house music influence has been included.
Saw them play in this spot several times when I was a student at UT. You could tell there was something magical and big going on, but they had the hearts and souls of buskers, playing mostly for the joy of it.
I remember working at Hastings Records on the DRAG in late '80s-90s and PDP would often play instore for us on Fridays. Great group of people and fun times.
This is exactly how I first saw them, playing on the street, right by the UT campus. The first time, they were actually on the campus, the second time just around the block from here. Within months of arriving in Austin, they were playing on a stage. I heard, and from the first, thought, this is awesome. A good time to be alive, young and in Austin.
Love this song. Have listened to it hundreds of time from the mp3. This is my first time to actually see the group- to put faces to the music. They look like such a sweet and down to earth group of people. Thank you Poi Dog for all of your awesome music. I don't know why you aren't the most popular band on Earth.
So awesome. This brings me back to when I was 20 and discovered Poi opening for Robyn Hitchcock of all people. And I'm still in love with Susan Voelz, LOL.
How can you go wrong with a tin whistle, accordion and mandolin? Add in the drums and all those glorious strings in many forms and you have a winner! What a fun group!
i saw them live in 1989. drove 3 hours to see them then turned around and drove back home at midnight. o got a t-shirt they all signed. i was 19 years old.
I remember inadvertently wandering by this video shoot back in 1989 and watching as they filmed! Also have some photos taken at the scene! Nice to see the video again.
I saw these guys in Baton Rouge around 91. About half way through the show, David Duke walked in with his bodyguard and started drinking a beer and watching the band....that was a surreal scene.
This was the year I left Austin for the Bay Area, and one of the hardest things about leaving was leaving the music scene and this band. I have missed you all so much, and it seems like we are still caught in the amber of those sweet, sweet days. Thanks for posting this, it reminded me of who I am.
And the year of their busking tour when they stopped in to Davis, CA, where I saw them and fell in love. They stayed at my house. I just went looking for them this week, and it definitely has reminded me of who I am too! Poi Dog is the soundtrack of my heart!
I was in Hawaii from ¹984 to 86,used to see Frank play drums for Hat Makes The Man every weekend at The Wave. Many years later I saw Poi Dog on two different tours in Little Rock.
OH WOW, Brave Combo!!! We lived in a heavily Slavic town for about 10 years. Brave Combo played their festival a couple of times. Both are awesome shows.
Is the girl with the sunglasses at 1:31 Sarah Harmon from "Slacker"? I know all these guys hung around together back then, and a lot of them were in the movie, which is why I ask.
I came s across one of their live albums 20 yrs ago. I think it was a bootleg but every song sounded better than the recorded versions. What's the name of the one song, Loves White thunder? Pooh so good. So we'll performed.
FIRST PDP song I ever herad. I bought the tape based on the album cover art alone. And first play (this was track one...) in the college LIBRRARY where people are supposed to be quiet and still. And I had to leave so I could dance otherwise I would have crawled up on the table and danced all alone. Thanks PDP so very much. I love you!
I had a poi dog pondering poster of two skeletons back to back. Legs outstretched toes to the roots arms risen fingers on the end as limbs. I have no clue what I'm listening to but this exists
Going to see them in February with the same guys I went to see them with the last time, except now we have wives and kids and Ronald Reagan is no longer President!
This is absolutely the most underrated song of all time. It's a sheer joy to listen to, and the video is fun to watch.

I loved this band. The bass player Bruce was also in my friend’s rock band The Motive.

I remember working at Hastings Records on the DRAG in late '80s-90s and PDP would often play instore for us on Fridays. Great group of people and fun times.

"drunk on margarita and full of food she said 'its hard to be with one when your in love with another' "
Thumbs up if you remember this song from when it was out, not from some shit-ass movie.
These guys were hipsters before hipsters were mainstream.

found an old Poi Dog shirt that’s designed as a brut champagne label- score
Mix pennywhistle with Zydeco, add mundane complaints and alcohol, dance to exhaustion and forget the complaints. Tried and true.
