    When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia, young Kazakhs were forced, by the Russian Empire, to leave their homes and fight 35 years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who desperately marches into a war that is not his, besides the sadness of leaving his parents, elders, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again generated this wonderfully sad song!

    The 2 string instrument is an ancient traditional instrument called Kobyz. The sounds are to take you back in time into the sounds of animals/birds/nature. I love it! The song is about a young man torn from his home to go to war. He is leaving his elderly parents and beautiful homeland and he doesn't know if he will see them again. He is trudging along and very tired and he wonders what his life as a soldier will be like. Gorgeous song telling the history of Kazakhstan.

    Samaltau has historical precedence and based on Kazakh occupation history. When Dimash's friend came up with the idea of possibly introducing it as a new song during one of his concerts, he felt the song wasn't ready and dedicated more time with the composers to refine it until he could do it justice to the significance of its meaning to Kazakhstan.

    the pure awe and admiration andrea....love it lol. even when you know him and know what to expect, he can still leave you mindless and breathless.
    i just watched a video about dimash's updated vocal range....he's reached 7 octaves 2 notes in his range. his lowest growl is a c1, his lowest vocal fry is a g#1, lowest chest is an a1, mixed sits around c6, yes he hit soprano high c with his mixed voice, and then his head/falsetto goes up to f#6, and then his whistle notes range from d7 to d8. and he keeps improving all the time, so eventually there will be absolutely nothing that he can't sing. lol.

      I also love most this first performance of 'Samaltau'. The stage is awesome, tells the story so well. I like that echo, really fits to the atmosphere; it sounds like the voice echoes in the steppes. Maybe the most important reason, this performance gave a really significant message considering where it was performed. I think it was not an accidental choice. Such a touching performance. I heard that not knowing the the language, people cried in the audience. This performance seemed to be really important for Kazakhs, and it was viewed very much. -Of course, the performance for Tokyo Jazz is equally good, it actually has better music instrumentation and Dimash sings so powerfully sitting in a chair. More intimate atmosphere.

    Samal tau / Breezy mountain
    Versions : #1#2
    Samal tau1, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
    What my life is going to be as soldat2?
    Comes to my mind over and over again
    My poor land, where my navel-cord cut, washed me3.

    I am not riding, I’m trudging,
    Even slower, just drag myself.
    It’s been about fifteen days
    On way. I’m approaching Omsk.

    My age is double mushel4, from year of Cow5.
    The Fate has swept me away, far from my home,
    Samal tau, my motherland is left behind,
    We’re just a foal-herd that has lost its pastures.

    I have father and mother,
    They both would reached elderly age.
    I was compelled to make this song
    By the grievous year of sixteen.

    Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
    What my life is going to be as soldat?

    1.Samal means breezy. These not too high mountains are actually windy, but the author’s recollection of his beloved mountains tamed the winds into a breeze.
    tau = mountain
    See Author's comments too.
    2.The Kazakh knows several words about the soldier. It is no coincidence that here he uses the word taken from Russian, as he is on Russian service.
    3.A beautiful phrase used to lovingly describe deep love for the homeland, for the Kazakh motherland.
    4.mushel is a 12 year cycle
    5.A zodiac sign known as Ox in Eastern/Chinese astrology

    Hello dear reactors! This intro you described as a musical experiment at the beginning of the video was very conscious, and absolutely appropriate to the theme of the song, if you listen, you can recognize the roar of the wolf, the splash of water, the roar of the wind, etc. which leads to the steppes at the foot of the mountains (Samaltau). And the story goes back to the First World War.He projects the thoughts of a young man who's been introduced to the army, and now he's walking left into the conscriptive town, wondering if he's still seeing his elderly parents, if he's even coming back,,,

    I wore my hair slicked back a time or two and you're right, my friends told me to stop. I looked like a used car salesman. I love this song. This stage performance was a little much in my opinion. Not the stage set but his performance. The first version he did while in quarantine I am more partial to. I sometimes feel that he tries to hard to please or impress. I get weary of the acrobats. I feel like he did so in this performance. I still love him and he is still the best singer in the world.

    • @paivyt.
      @paivyt. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the first time Dimash sang 'Samaltau'. He performed in the film festival, so stage was like it should be. I think everything was on point in this performance, the stage was meant to tell the story and show what he was singing about to the Chinese audience who didn't understand Kazakh. Yes, Dimash performed this Kazakh anti-war song in China [!]. He definitely didn't try to show off, it's your interpretation maybe not knowing the details of this song. All his vocals were relevant to the story. Actually, Dimash himself said that he felt this song challenging to sing because he had to be careful NOT to be too technical or over the top. This is very significant song for Kazakhs. Dimash wanted to respect the song, focus to emotions and make people feel the tragic story. For me, he succeeded. And obviously here also; I heard that not knowing the language, people in the audience cried.

    • @littlecricket3140
      @littlecricket3140 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paivyt. I'm sure all of what you are saying is truthful. I stand corrected perhaps on which version came first. As far as the stage presence I don't have issues with it. It was beautiful and added to the story. In the end in my little comment world and in my way of hearing a song, I preferred the non-staged version. I felt the emotions more in that performance than in this one. It also felt more intimate because there was no visible audience. It had more of a spiritual essence to it than this one. As far as what the song is about, I get it. It's noble, it has a profound message. You need not defend Dimash, I'm not against him or his music. I simply have preferences and I stated mine. I will say that I do have to take breaks from Dimash because he is so overwhelming and I do get exhausted with his vocal range dynamics which I feel are not always necessary, it is more for sensationalism. Again, just one man's opinion. I am not against Dimash, He is the best.

    • @paivyt.
      @paivyt. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@littlecricket3140 I respect your opinion. I am not defending him, just have a different view. I see those more impressive or powerful vocals as a part of his artistic expression. Not as a show off, except in some places like contests where it's actually needed. Interestingly, I feel like many other singers are belting powerfully here and there and people have nothing agaist that. But when Dimash uses those powerful vocals mostly in the climax of the song, it's too much😅 (I am not speaking about you, btw:) Fortunately, Dimash has plenty of more tame/peaceful songs to choose about, if the fireworks get tiring. I like most his Kazakh songs because they are so authentic and emotional. And he sounds simply magical singing in his own language. But then there are those who love most his songs with vocal acrobatics and are disappointed if there isn't any. Some enjoy most songs which for me lack emotion (as songs), like Opera 2 and Diva Dance. We are different...

      @@paivyt. No worries, I get what you mean. I really do like Dimash from the very first song I heard which was Sinful Passion. I was hooked from then on. I think that I have gotten out of balance because I couldn't go a day without hearing him sing. That was 9 months ago and now I'm a little worn out. I know he is authentic and I have never heard another singer like him. I have heard counter tenors sing but this is not the same. I do like his more mellower songs as well. I do not particularly care for his rap. I mean he is talented and all but I don't care for rap and never did. On the other hand, if M. J. were alive, well all I could say is, watch out Michael. You are so right about his Kazakh songs and Russian songs too. My roommate does not like him at all and it angers me! He tells me that he hates the way he raises his voice at the end of Across Endless Dimensions whereas I think it's perfect. I cannot imagine why anyone could dislike him so much. You and I are good bro. I'm not worried about you. Actually you seam pretty awesome in caring about anyone's opinion. You get my thumbs up.

      @@littlecricket3140 👍 Yes, Dimash is addictive, I know this too. But he is not for everyone: his way of singing and repertoire is so different (mostly). And sometimes it takes time to get him; for me it did. Now, I
      can't get enough...
      I agree with counter tenor sound - I also hear the difference. I guess what makes Dimash different from counter tenors is that he sings soprano so naturally. Why not, when it is his authentic voice. He could keep his child's soprano through puberty and sings with it even now, as 27. He is kind of grown up choir boy😅 Probably it was because his vocal cords are much longer, he confirmed this. And practicing helped also. Well, it was nice to exchange thoughts. All the best and take care! 😊

    I think Sean is referring to thugs and Godfather type men, shysters' with slicked back hair. I was glad to have the lyrics as I didn't know what this song was about and loved the staging with the houses in the background like a village he would be leaving. I was afraid that with school and Sean moving we wouldn't see you guys together anymore so it is nice that you are reviewing this together. What I have to say about this version of the song is that although nice it can't compare to the original where he is singing it in his studio sitting on a piano bench with two musicians behind him. The playing of the instruments is better and there is a rain stick instead of chimes. You should watch it just for comparison for yourselves, not for commenting on unless you want to do another reaction. That one is just much better even though I didn't know what the song was about. Thanks guys

    Usually, when you attend DIMASH concert, on the Eve of the concert, there is a fan gathering. If you are lucky, his mom and dad would be there so are his siblings and band members. The organizers will have bags to be given out to the attendees. Inside the bag, there will your most coveted headband, a card with DIMASH name (the one that fans hold in the concert, somewhat lighted like the one in Sinful Passion, buttons, etc

    Ésta canción habla sobre la PRIMERA GUERRA MUNDIAL... donde miles de jóvenes kazajos fueron OBLIGADOS a ir a esa guerra... la introducción de la canción se pueden escuchar a lobos aullando y a las grullas... todos estos sonidos fueron lo que escuchaban los soldados cuando tuvieron que caminar para ir a la guerra... día tras día caminando hasta encontrarse con los demás soldados... les sugiero que sepan de que se trata una canción antes de reaccionar por que su reacción tendrá mas sentido y entenderán a medida que transcurre la canción y no estén jugando a las adivinanzas durante la canción... queda feo lo que hacen, lo veo como una falta de respeto a la historia de Kazajistán.

    I really like this version of Samaltau. I also like the way Kobyz player held the bow with him holding it
    differently than most people hold a bow. Also Andrea if you don't mind me asking I have always wanted
    to ask you about that keyboard you are using. What kind of keyboard is that? By the way there is a version
    of Samaltau at the Tokyo Jazz Festival where he performs at his home studio in Kazakhstan with just a Kobyz
    player and a Sybyzgy (flute) player. Pretty incredible performance considering he is in a studio and he still sounds
    like he is in a concert hall. Great reaction as always. Look forward to more great ones in the future.

    Samaltau is my favourite Dimash song, so it’s always good to hear, but this is not my favourite version. I really like the restrained sonic and visual production in the 2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival performance, with just the three of them in Dimash’s home studio. He doesn’t actually need the fabulous staging and (slightly) overcranked reverb/delay in order to take you to another place, although I understand why those might be necessary in huge concert settings.

    • @paivyt.
      @paivyt. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that he definitely needed it here. This is a film festival, so the stage is appropriate. The most important, the stage tells a story of the song. They wanted the audience who didn't understand the language understand what he was singing about. This is an old Kazakh folk song which tells about their tragic history. An anti-war song. This was performed in China, and I think the song choice was not accidental (remember the suppression of Kazakh rooted uighurs in China). Dimash wants to send a message for peace in his works, he has mentioned it his main goals...
      -About the echo, I like it here because it sounds like he was in a great open space - in the steppes. Fits to the story. But yes, musical instrumentation is better in the Tokyo Jazz performance. A beautifully intimate performance. Both performances have their pros:)

    • @Mark-vj7zd
      @Mark-vj7zd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paivyt. Different context, I agree. I was definitely expressing a personal preference.
      It’s a little odd that you mention the echo effect as evoking a ‘great open space - in the steppes’, as the opposite is true. Echo is a product of enclosure, so you’d be extremely unlikely to hear one if you were out on the steppe. Among mountains, perhaps, but not in a wide open space.

    • @paivyt.
      @paivyt. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mark-vj7zd I see:) I know that about an echo but this is just my feeling based on how I perceive this song. For me, it feels like there is more space in this way. I guess when the song is named Samaltau, there could be mountains too... Most people seem to prefer Tokyo Jazz performance, I agree to your reasoning - the instruments and the actual sound is better. But somehow this performance here, with all its imperfections still feels more close to me. I know, it's weird... :)

      @@paivyt. Hey, no problem, it’s great that we have different performances to enjoy. I should probably say that for me it’s not just the wonderful balance and clarity of vocal and instruments that appeals in the 2020 TJF performance. It’s also the intimacy - I get a real sense of being in the presence of that incredible voice, and being told the story personally. I would love it if he did more video recordings that way, alongside the large-scale concerts.

    • @paivyt.
      @paivyt. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mark-vj7zd 👍 I agree, his most intimate almost acapella performances are so good, the most emotional. His voice really shines, every nuance, breath can be heard. Perfect! I really like his voice with a piano only, like in 'Qaragym-ai'. I've read many comments where people wish these kind of acoustic performances from him. But I also heard a different view - a rock musician (who hardly knew Dimash), criticized that his voice is produced to stand out and robb the attention from the music/instruments. Hmm... I guess his voice stands out anyway, because it's so awesome. Otherwise, Dimash is a team with his musicians, he appreciates them and puts a lot of effort to the music/instrumentation. Actually, I often feel his voice could be more audible. Everyone naturally wishes to hear that incredible voice well, not drown to the music. For me, it's the most beautiful of all instruments. 😊

    Sean...For you to say those Kobyz sounds are terrible only shows your lack of understanding that music of cultures other than your culture create and love many "sounds" with which you are unfamiliar. For a musical artist yourself, you seem to be very narrow-minded. Music is subjective, so I know you have the right to your opinion, but as a reactor/analyzer, I would think you could be more open-minded and willing to also learn.
