I would argue that propaganda is inherently wrong because it's manipulation. Having to manipulate people shows you cannot convince people by reason which brings the validity of your whole cause into question.
Agree'd. I can't stand the argument that propaganda is neutral. Even if Propaganda was truly neutral, the very fact that it can be used for nefarious means without the public even knowing, should be enough to make the average person very weary. And I certainly don't subscribe to the idea that Propaganda makes the world easier to understand or comprehend, like Ellul claims. If anything, Propaganda can be used to create a fantasy world, with which can be used to manipulate people into supporting awful things, just see Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, China, or North Korea, if you don't believe me.
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.” (Edward Bernays, Propaganda, 1928)
Great content, thanks for sharing. I love the concise format of these videos. Always a great choice of quotes and historical events to illustrate the ideas.
I just read a great book about modern propaganda techniques by Peter Pomerantsev titled ‘This is [not] Propaganda: adventures in the war against reality’ . It was very interesting.
You discussed 'vertical' propaganda, which implies the existence of 'horizontal' propaganda, but no mention of that type. I'm guessing that type would be the relentless parroting of propaganda carried out by its victims, to 'police' each other's views and speech, perhaps akin to 'groupthink', as has been dramatically exacerbated by social media.
I see now why this was recommended to us only just now. Every1 needs to see this! When the culture is “history is not important” you know the country is doomed
Propaganda isn't there to sway opinion, but to demoralize. To bring you to a point of reluctant submission, by making you believe your compliance is inevitable. But it's not inevitable
Master class in PowerPoint, and NOT simply reading the text outloud with slideshow transitions. Of course the SME is also sublime, condensing reams of expostulation into a 10-minute school video. The video on Camus's Rebellion is another nice one.
The public fool system doesn't want people to think, it wants workers who can do the jobs they're hired for. You think Wal-Mart wants critical thinkers?
First off, this was a very useful video to help educate my poor adult friends ;-) Secondly, and since its been brought up, just because Howard Zinn may have published inaccuracies in his books, that statement alone is not credible to render the use of the particular quote in the video invalid nor invalidate him as an Author. That was a common fallacy used in propaganda called Red Herring, which skirts the topic away from whats being discussed in order to undermine the discussion or argument. Thank you for the great lesson Saligia B. And since Saligia brought it up, I'd like to point out that Howard Zinn described exactly why he wrote what he did, and gathered the historic material that he did in the introduction to his book as not to mislead anyone. He explicitly warned the reader he was attempting to tell the tale of the "looser", since the common history we learn in school is usually events as told by the "winner." I suggest it as a good read. It's called A People's History of the United States. Its patriotic in the sense that there have been some great battles between good and evil on the soil of the USA and abroad that we should be proud of- even when the heros are the losers.
That’s why I ground myself in two things in life: 1: What has history taught us and what has stood the test of time to be true; 2: Basing any new info or ideas that are put forth to me as either: Info that is being presented to me with the option to be scrutinized and to be able ask questions about or have a further conversation to gain the truth of a particular piece of information. OR - Info or ideas that are being presented to me with no option of questioning them and/or potential threats, shame, ridicule, or other potential consequences if I do want to dig deeper on the particular issue presented. Stay vigilant and seek the truth.
Mark Messa In hindsight I should have, as he was obviously extremely influential in the development of 20th century propaganda. But at the time integrating him didn't fit into the flow of the video.
+Mark Messa Great question, and answer. +academyofideas: Thanks for the initial video (and creating so many important others in a brief and concise way). For anyone interested in learning more on modern propaganda, I highly recommend the book: 'The Hidden Persuaders', by Vance Packard.
I don't think that propaganda is value neutral: 1) you need to present both sides fairly; and 2) you need to allow people to hear other points of view and weigh the evidence. Hitler clearly stated that propaganda isn't value neutral.
I tend to agree with your sentiments. But "you" don't *need* to do anything! The individuals and organizations that put out propaganda do so to further their OWN interests. Their interests might be at odds with the reader or viewer. And all members of the audience might not necessarily have the same vested interests. What people ought to recognize, and accept, is that different people have different interests, and to not pretend otherwise. The responsibility is not on powerful people to make the world less scary, it is on those with little power to recognize just how scary the world actually is! And to preserve whatever power that they do have.
That's a subject for a completely separate video. Wilson was one of the most dangerous presidents America has ever had, and the country still hasn't recovered from his time in the Oval Office.
This is an interesting item. At various political rallies, the extent to which some people follow the thoughts of the leader can be a cause for concern. There is a saying "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it". Debating ideas can be a very useful exercise. This item is still relevant given the politcal environment that exists in some countries.
Repetition is a propaganda tool and the media made sure we were hit over the head with corona virus. Many images the media uses invokes an emotional response. It almosts prevents people from mounting any rational objection. If Heath Ledger were around today he would say that : It's the schemers that brought you the corona virus. The schemers that control your little world. You see, all they have to do is take their media and have them say "Corona Virus! Corona Virus! Corona Virus!" and everyone loses their minds!
it is disseminated throughout a ppropaganda This form where ceasing to consider possibly allows for peers to apply the pressure while the propogandist have to use minimal effort. People are comfortable where they are in their knowledge often. so they cease to look into new avenues for it. so it seems I do this as well. but to open your eyes you see the whole world is communicating to you through layers. every moment there is something to garner and learn from.
Information overload. We can only digest a limited amount so they bombard the masses with a narrative over and over to the point that even when they are shown the truth they are too confused or fatigued to recognise it.

This channel has so much good stuff.
So relevant .... 2022 is going to be one for the books I feel .....buckle ur seat belts kids
Yup
I just read a great book about modern propaganda techniques by Peter Pomerantsev titled ‘This is [not] Propaganda: adventures in the war against reality’ . It was very interesting.
This is the most fantastic Intro to Propaganda piece of media I've ever seen. Great job!!!
2013: "In the modern era we are exposed to enormous amounts of propaganda".
2021: "You ain't seen nothing yet".
Jacques Ellul's books are amazing! Great video and information. THANK YOU!
Good stuff! A video that is needed on the internet
This is an extraordinary valuable video to begin recognizing the veil of propaganda through which we must peek daily to begin to find reality.
I am so glad I found this channel some of these topics very eye-opening in today's time
The biggest bit of propaganda is "unity". What it really means is conformity.
I see now why this was recommended to us only just now. Every1 needs to see this! When the culture is “history is not important” you know the country is doomed
a thorough and enjoyable introduction, keep it up! ;)
Notice that this video was uploaded in 2013. Since then we have been barraged with propaganda and are well versed in it without being taught.
Yeah, it took until 2021 for me to see. Thankfully i got my critical thinking back decades ago by living without TV.
In the 1890's William Randolph Hearst started "yellow" journalism. And it's been used successfully ever since.
Another entertaining rapidly explained gem of a lecture.
Thank you. People know longer question authority or think for themselves. Propaganda does the thinking for them.
If you speak of God's propaganda then all things are as they should be.
Please people realize you are being hypnotized constantly with advertising and propaganda
the biggest propaganda tool is how Statistics are used. Statistics are a powerful tool for the intelligent and weapon against the idiotic
Propaganda isn't there to sway opinion, but to demoralize. To bring you to a point of reluctant submission, by making you believe your compliance is inevitable. But it's not inevitable
incredibly accurate for the present
Master class in PowerPoint, and NOT simply reading the text outloud with slideshow transitions. Of course the SME is also sublime, condensing reams of expostulation into a 10-minute school video. The video on Camus's Rebellion is another nice one.
This video should be mandatory for high school
Yes it should
The public fool system doesn't want people to think, it wants workers who can do the jobs they're hired for. You think Wal-Mart wants critical thinkers?
LOL. The point of this video is that it never will be.
Thank you for thus video. Does a far better job explaining propaganda fir others than I've achieve myself when trying to.
This channel s CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
I going to make my own propaganda for the use of self improvement!
'Value neutral' applies to so many 'tools in the toolbox'. Great explainer video!!
First off, this was a very useful video to help educate my poor adult friends ;-)
Secondly, and since its been brought up, just because Howard Zinn may have published inaccuracies in his books, that statement alone is not credible to render the use of the particular quote in the video invalid nor invalidate him as an Author.
Thank you for your informative comment.
This is powerful. You are doing a great service.
That’s why I ground myself in two things in life:
1: What has history taught us and what has stood the test of time to be true;
2: Basing any new info or ideas that are put forth to me as either: Info that is being presented to me with the option to be scrutinized and to be able ask questions about or have a further conversation to gain the truth of a particular piece of information. OR - Info or ideas that are being presented to me with no option of questioning them and/or potential threats, shame, ridicule, or other potential consequences if I do want to dig deeper on the particular issue presented.
Stay vigilant and seek the truth.
and that's the way it was in early 20's. History doesn't always repeat itself, but the successful patterns emerge far more often.
I'm starting to learn this since my friend is starting a regime in the school and he wants me to be the propagandist
In 11.25 minutes you presented 70% of my dissertation. 7 years ago. Amazing.
Any reason to have not mention Edward Bernays in your video?
Mark Messa In hindsight I should have, as he was obviously extremely influential in the development of 20th century propaganda. But at the time integrating him didn't fit into the flow of the video.
+Mark Messa
Great question, and answer.
+academyofideas: Thanks for the initial video (and creating so many important others in a brief and concise way). For anyone interested in learning more on modern propaganda, I highly recommend the book:
'The Hidden Persuaders', by Vance Packard.
Academy of Ideas can you do a part 2 on this discussing the development of 20th century propaganda into contemporary propaganda?
Here ya go... th-cam.com/video/lOUcXK_7d_c/w-d-xo.html
InsaneAsylumEscapee thank you!!
This is an amazing video showing EXACTLY what is happening on the political left over the past 5 years.
Thank You for timely lesson. Much needed these days with media-monopoly. Learn how to think v what to think.
I love these videos, I really do, but the ads are getting obnoxious.
@@frankdayton731 Well said.
Brilliant presentation..
Should be taught in schools.
Only in homeschooling is this taught - public schools will NEVER teach you to question them.
We are living this right now
This is a very interesting video It might be the best youtube video
+Renzo Matute oh for real, i didnt ask
+Martin Gregorio Cordero hey fool stop replying on my comment and if you dont ill make you wish you had never replied nerd
+Renzo Matute Thanks, I appreciate the comment.
I think it's awesome too. I recently found the Academy Of Ideas and I find the content excellent!
OMG the irony in your comment.
This is the best missive on Propaganda that I have seen.
Combine this with internet algorithms and you have a recipe for real disaster.
And add the root of most problems… Money. Simmer, stir occasionally and serve cold.
Living this is 2021…
This has aged well
This is so on point it scares me.
Start acting then.
You failed to explain why Woodrow Wilson needed to do that. He had promised to stay out of the war.
That's a subject for a completely separate video. Wilson was one of the most dangerous presidents America has ever had, and the country still hasn't recovered from his time in the Oval Office.
Woooow the beginning part alone is powerful
This is a real person, and this is awesome. lol
Thank you for your time 💖
Every video they've done has aged well..
Well this has aged well...
Damn !! This channel is awesome !
So much propaganda surrounding the coronavirus
I'm relieved to see that someone other than myself sees through the bullshit.
Mostly so called half-truths, which are especially difficult to detect for those belonging to the hypnotized crowd.
Great information! Keep up the good work!
In the age of information, I can't wrap my head around why this is still a viable tactic.
it is disseminated throughout a ppropaganda
This form where ceasing to consider possibly allows for peers to apply the pressure while the propogandist have to use minimal effort.
@@Cp_9900 A lot of that information is also false.
It’s because monetization of the internet allowed for more mediums of communication to arise, which allows for more propaganda.
This was really helpful. Thank you for making this video.
The age of sars-covi-2, with for some, forced jab to retain job. There's attempts in France & elsewhere to introduce vax-visas/passports.
Thank you so much for this video and all the information you have in it
We are living in the worst propaganda ever.
Great video thanks
