@@therickeffect7466 thank you! Feel free to ask questions - I don’t quite understand what you’re asking here, but pressing the buttons (LLMMH) quickly in succession leads to a true string
This video has opened up new horizons for me and horizons I may struggle against on the other side. Great video, keep it up Nova your content is amazing.
As somebody new to traditional fighters that focus on long blockstrings (due to the only fighters I've played before then not having real gatling mechanics), this is some really good advice. From personal experience, I had a general sense that frame traps are a much better idea, just from game sense I'd developed from playing Yamcha and mashing wolf fang fist M on block. But the insight I lacked was on how to apply that pressure universally. It'd be so much more threatening to get frame traps from doing light attacks into a delayed medium since they're not nearly as committal as my rekka, too. I had been building my block pressure around the idea that my opponent would be mashing reflect, but I really appreciate the pointer that most players would rather disrespect the pressure, and how to deal with it and play around it. This seems so much easier to implement on the fly rather than memorizing a long string, too! And it helps focus the game more on what makes it fun for me, which is the mental game and decisions made during the match. Like, learning combos is fun and rewarding, but memorizing a long blockstring is like combos except without everything that makes combos feel great, and doesn't really work all that well in the long run. More effort for less reward than light into delayed medium into mental game. And not having to spend so much time learning blockstrings is CRAZY helpful to learning new characters! Like, this was something that was becoming a major roadblock for me learning new characters, which I started to feel was pretty detrimental to learning a team based fighting game for me. I appreciate that this is built around the mentality of what most online players are conditioned to fight against, cause thats the skill level that most people who would click on this video would want pointers for. Long blockstrings do build meter, which is helpful and valuable, but I think its more valuable to spend that time opening up the opponent and doing a mental game around that, which would pay off more later in the match. From playing other fighters, I know that conditioning the opponent is REALLY valuable and rewarding to look out for. And looking out for opponent patterns and exploiting them is insanely fun to me. And I'd DEFINITELY felt that mental strength drain from playing against other people online and just being careful on defense. Long story short, this is some really valuable insight that I feel is going to let me learn the game easier, and have more fun playing it! Liked and subbed.

Wow, this video is SO good and helpful, but the tempo section specifically blew my mind. I never thought about how a more staggered, slowed-down tempo can make certain slow options like 6Ms or command grabs seem more ambiguous and harder to react to and the way you explained it made a lot of sense. That's so cool 🤩 Thank you so much for the lesson. I will try to apply what I learned here today!

@@Demondzeta hello i do actually, I have a dash blocking video, although more geared towards movement, and a more recent higher quality « pressure shimmy » video that encompasses that depth I was eluding to
@@NovaZayn I am wired my guy for some reason my game goes at 53-60 FPS now on pc. 5:05 you can dash block and..2h a vanish? How do I train for all that that video is insane. I need to do some 15min practice of that every day when I wake up. Especially to counter the vanish. I was able to get so much of you tip of using 5L2M already omg
That’s a bit more advanced, but is doable. A better way is to just stop ur pressure. So 4LL do NOTHING by holding back in case they mash, then counter what they do (Vanish, reflect, dp etc). Cross ups do feel like that but are VERY hard to deal with. You only need 4LL delay 2M on most online folks. Use cross ups when they can actually block. Then, with that same “slow” rhythm, things like 4LL 6M, 4L…4L….2M, & same side options start to feel the same!
I don't understand. why should I wait to overload until I'm safe to block? it's not like i would be blocking anyway and if they think i will they'll still have the advantage of forcing me to block
Sorry I don't quite understand your question; wdym until you're safe to block and should wait? I think the "should wait" part relates to frame trapping - you WANT to land frame traps first (delay normals) because a bunch of reasons: most damaging combo starter, lower leveled people tend to mash a lot so this counters that, easiest ways to get hits, AND incites them to STOP mashing. If you overload while they continue to mash, they'll mash 5L THROUGH your 6M/DR/cross-ups so you literally "can't overload". If they continue to mash, continue to frame trap. You can only "overload" once they get conditioned to stop mashing, in which you can abuse that respect. But if they never get conditioned, then no need to change anything and you get easy dubs
@@NovaZayn sorry for being unclear and making you repeat yourself. At 3:43 you say ideally overload on safe normals (-5), and i was confused about why I shouldn't overload on unsafe normals, and after thinking about it more i think it's because i can't safely bait out reflect/dp.(reflect because they could start mashing.) why would i start blocking, I thought. and if i'm trying to overload I'm definitely not blocking so what advantage does him knowing that i could safely block give me?(answer: he's not going to reflect/dp or at least those options will lose to blocking and they're conditioned to respect frametrapping)
@@conanngan645 oh mostly because of 2 things; that’s when you can cancel out of them best, and when a KEY overload is possible: just stopping. If you stop on safe normals, you bait out stuff while blocking but if it’s unsafe you’d get hit without being able to block
@@conanngan645 sorry, also revisiting this and looking at the () comments - you are right and it sounds like ur already layers ahead! Thé better u get at pressuring, and the better défense you come into, you’ll notice that overloading on unsafe normals can be a thing; people using DR after a 2M for example in tournaments is much harder to tech than 5L DR because it’s so uncommon. But these layered mixups come with more risk! It’s like trying to do IAD nothing 2M low solo; very strong but such a big gap (that’s why assists cover them)
I started maining kefla and would always change tempo with my attacks on block and they will poke and I'll punish them...ig I was frame trapping before I knew what it was
Why do a true blockstring to get an IAD jH or other L mix to land if you can just… block lol I understand the frustrations sometimes, but it always will be a risk since you can’t always be right. However, after I notice someone using a DP on me early in the game it always costs them later on; whether it’s the next play right after, the play to win or the next game. Especially if you watch their ressources (like if they have 3 bars), the characters they play (Jiren, i literally ALWAYS wait instead of a frame trap and they counter) or their play style (all c assists madmen). On top of that, just blocking will keep you safe if they mash anyways. Of course, you can always just true block string, use both assists, use a meter to vanish, then risk a DR after wasting all that if they can block or.. be able to bait and 2M them while keeping those ressources. Don’t let fear stop you from growing in this game, since pressure is also a skill to work on in order to get you to the next level. I promise you’ll get better if you trust it:) Also, from the other perspective, when you defend them you’ll be able to throw them off with DPs and mash mind games
