    terrific technique. thanks for sharing with me a couple of years ago in N.J.U.S.A.. did wonders for my hornbeam, which the other guy didn't listen and never got any sprouts. using it now on a couple of elms and a maple, we'll see. thanks again, Steve.

    How long would you expect to wait before you see any signs of growth? I have an air layered Hawthorn inside the house in a bin bag. Two weeks and nothing yet, possibly not enough roots.

      Hey, hope you noticed yourself as its been months since you asked. If click read more in Tony's description under the video he writes "When the new shoots reach 5cm or 2” remove from the bag and protect from cold and wind, mist spray daily and keep out of direct sunlight."
      So it stays in the bag for as long as it takes the new shoots to reach 5cm.

  • @bartekbielinski5324

    That's all good but... how long should a yamadori tree stay in the bag? What is the aftercare when You remove it from that bag? Isn't is a problem if a tree has a small amount of roots during collection? Last year I treated one of my collected hawt horns in that manner, it "sweated" beautifully giving a lots of fresh, green leaves but when I took it out after 2-3 weeks I kept in the same place (warm, sunny, dry) and it died in 3-4 months. I think I should've kept it in high humidity environment and that was the crucial part of aftercare. Nevertheless - it works wonders, but I am not sure if natural methods aren't better for a health and sustainable growth of a tree? best regards!

      @tobiaszdansky4544 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Late reply, but... With this technique it's important with baby steps. You can also start with a thick black bag. Then when buds start to open you replace the black bag with a transparent bag, letting sunlight in. But not direct sunlight. When you remove that bag you still want to keep it out of strong sun.

    I'm new to bonsai; the tree is being kept humid in order to encourage new buds to sprout?
    -Thanks for this demonstration! : )

  • @BlueSkyBonsai
    @BlueSkyBonsai 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Tony! I have a question: if it's in the garage then there's no light at all getting through-- will it still bud then? Also, what do you think is the optimum temperature for inside the bag, roughly? If I leave it outdoors here in Madrid it will cook the tree and roots so I will have to find the right place to keep it (and yes my partner won't forgive me if it's in the house or on the patio 😉

    I have a disease problem after a few weeks in the bag. prunus, pear and almond for example ... how to avoid diseases in a favorable environment ...?
    What fungicide or treatment are you using?
    how to do with these moisture-sensitive species? Thank you!

    • @TonyTickle
      @TonyTickle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to open the bag to freshen the air every couple of days

      Yes, I do this very day, but the disease don't stop. Prunus are sensitive to a lot of problems when the air is to humid. For some spicies, this technic seems difficult without the help of the appropriate fungicide.
      But I really don't know which one to choose. If you have any products names, i would be glad!

      If it’s a cheap thin bag, it does let light through. Like he said, if the bags too thick the growth will be yellow.

      @@TonyTickle I think I understood what you mean. It surprises me a little, since light is normally also a factor in plant growth. But a bonsai friend of mine did it like you did and it worked for him too. Thank you for responding to my comment again. I am 60 years old and had my last English lesson in 1977 so it is not so easy to understand everything that was said. In any case, I find your method interesting. I would never have had the idea of working with a black cover. All the best from Germany.

    1. Would you recommend this “bag” technique on pine trees?
    2 . I have colected several pine trees a month ago. Potted them pretty much as you described in your first video. Kept them in shade mostly. Is it to late to apply “bag’ technique now?
    Thank you
