Fairfield Showground is an indoor/outdoor venue located in Sydney NSW Australia. Usually operating as a space for the local community with events such as the markets, horse racing and Oktoberfest, a few weekends in the 70's it played host to new and upcoming bands who went on to achieve international stardom. AC/DC, Cold Chisel, HUSH, Finch, The Ted Mulry Gang and others took to he stage and from all accounts put on some blistering perfomances.
Check out the full list below:
AC/DC,HUSH, Sebastian Hardie, Finch, TMG, Buffalo, The Radiators, Cold Chisel, The Sports, Jo Jo Zep, Mental as Anything, The Hitmen, The Aliens, Velvet Underground. Ol'55, Shute, Richard Clapton.

Whilst other showgrounds around Australia played host to festivals during this period I focused on only one Showground venue due to time constraints and my aim is \ to simply bring to peoples attention the historical musical events in suburban locations that have sometimes not been documented in regards to live music performances.

Great video! I was brought up in nearby Greystanes in the 1970s. We used to go to the Fairfield Showgrounds all the time but by that stage the markets had taken over. Changing demographics of Fairfield and the surrounding suburbs have brought these days to an end unfortunately

I do remember going to a similar day in 1983 at Bankstown Paceway. It was called Powerjam 83. The Angels headlined with the Radiators, the Church and The Expression. Was a big day in the hot sun.

    Happy New Year Gioia
I went to the Fairfield Showground in 1979. Cold Chisel headlined on what was a beautiful winters day. Ian Moss didn't turn up till they were about to go on stage and they were actually going to have the Sports guitarist Andrew Pendelbury stand in. Fortunately Mossy arrived and everything was OK. I noticed at 7.40 of your video there was a picture of Pirana. What a great band they were live. Saw them at Sunbury 73. There is a You Tube clip of them playing Santana's Soul Sacrifice at the first Sunbury in 1972.
Also went to the Parramatta Park gig in 1981. Midnight Oil headlined and I do have some photos somewhere. If I remember rightly there was also some high wire trapeze acts as well.
Thanks for reviving so many great memories.

Love your post brings back so many memories. My brother Steve Rondo put on the Fairfield Showground concert, I remember helping print and putting up those green posters and my mates helping us out on the gates, unfortunately it did rain on the day.

Wow. I hope Steve might view and enjoy the vlog. It's not easy finding photos and anecdotes, but I try my best. Together with my brother's fine editing skills, the vlogs end up quite good if I must say 😁 Look out for my next one on the Marconi Club Cheers

Thanks for another amazing video Gioia. Where your filming from at around the 5 minute mark, those sports fields, that was the horse trotting oval track. It was dirt all around in a big oval shape. They've only just in the past couple of years gotten rid of the old track and made those sports fields you see today. Also behind the grandstands were the original covered sheltered area where they held the markets which was completely removed and rebuilt. Usually concerts and festivals were held in that undercover area. In one of the photo's you posted with one of the bands playing i could recognize the old beams and covered structure belonging to it. Another remnant that's now unfortunately disappeared into time is on the golf course side entrance, as you go over the hill and come down towards the car parking area on the left side there used to be and old fibro ticket booth building. It was quite an old and dilapidated structure, the bars were broken on the ticket windows and one could hop on through on days the back gate was shut. This video of yours bought up a bit of nostalgia for me for the days of the old Fairfield Showgrounds even though i wasn't around in the 70's. I spent the best years of my life as a kid growing up in and around that place.
We live on just behind the golf course (hospital side), when we moved into our home the late 80's up right up till the mid 90's whenever there were festivals and such at the showgrounds and they had firework shows, we could sit on our balcony and watch them. Unfortunately the trees in the park have overgrown and completely blocks the view of any firework shows going on there. One thing though any time there is live music going on, the sound still echo's through the golf course and through to our house. The latest was on NYE evening they had a party going on there.

Hi. Great video. Yes Bon played Recorder. He played it in the band fraternity especially on “Seasons of Change”. One of my favourite bands. Good to see HUSH. I’m still mates with Rick Lum & made a few film clips with his new band “Get Rocked” with Steve Mulry. Cheers Wayne Sole(Karen’s Brother)

Firstly loving the channel , growing up at Liverpool you bring back some great memories. If you're after more information about the Fairfield and Warwick farm gigs , get in touch with Bob Spencer he was the guitarist from Finch.

I'm thinking that the band Free made a big impression on Australian bands when they played Sydney at Randwick Racecourse according to a lot of people they went down better than Deep Purple, you can see and hear their influence in so many bands some guitarist sound like Paul Kossoff. I love your stories.

I went to that a free double j day there, Chisel headlining. Jimmy and the Boys, Split Enz
I was 13. I saw a girl get pack raped on the ground right next to me.
There were always fights too… cause everyone brought a slab and a few goons.
Was the first of many many festivals and gigs for me. I started going to the city to see punk bands after that..much much safer for young girls than the Oz rock circuit.

I travelled to the "A Day in The Sun" in August '79 from Sylvania (yes Puberty Blues girls were in my classes at school) in a mates Kombi with a few others - there were quite a crew from our area who we hung out with - I spotted this adorable chick talking to a friend of mine and went over and intro'd myself (bong on badges an all) - we had heaps of mutual friends but had never met - cut a long story short we have been happily married for 42 years and still go to heaps of gigs (no kids .. yay) - I've got a you tube channel that I started way back in 2008 with heaps of video footage from shows we've been to th-cam.com/users/smartabrett
