Everyone can have my camera, my lenses, my lights. So everyone can do what i do with those things. The only thing no one else but me can have, it's myself. Yourself and your ways around others are the biggest asset you can bring into a group environment

Yessir, authenticity is the key to storytelling, artistry and relationships. Thats how social media is best used as an outlet for your expression documenting your learning process but also in connecting you with like-minded people who are traveling in the same direction. Looking forward to working with you in the near future!

This is so real and something I constantly tell people. Can’t count how many jobs I’ve gotten have been from me just being open and friendly while also having good work.

Love the insight here Carlo! Being a good person is soooo important when on set. In a lot of cases more important that your technical skills. Loved hearing the message from your producer friend, and your own perspectives/experiences on getting hired/building relationships. Another helpful video as always, we appreciate it, keep up the good work!

I like your insight, Carlo. The more I make something creative with people the more I've realized that being a good person is really important. In the end, the only thing I can show to people is authentic myself. not skills and not knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing your thought.

Filmmaking its like playing in a band or a symphony. Every note plays next to the other to create the melodies and harmonies. Melodies get the attention and can drive the song, but harmonies support and give the music shape, form, color, and texture. The Director/DP relationship should be harmonious. All great and working relationships should be as well.

Thanks for this Carlo! I’m new in the film space and I’ve been fixated on what skills I can offer. You’ve made me realize what a huge advantage I already have simply from my people skills. No flex, I’m a good hang and keep a cool head under pressure. Never saw those as assets before now. I’m going to make sure I’m marketing my authentic self on my channel all the more going forward.

Great take on how important relationships and relationship building are in this business. I have seen this way too many times when people who are highly skilled, don't get the job, rather than people who are good people but not as skilled. Dont over look this.

I think that i understand the point being made and thank you for sharing that. Its appreciated but i would suggest that not all professional sets work like this. I think it may be a very particular sensibility and finding the right balance and being authentic isnt always easy to gauge and self analyse. For sure it can be pretty much a given about being a nice person, pleasant polite and accommodating but i do not think it is helpful to think in terms of authenticity as thta can be a Pandora’s box. Depending on the role in this case a dp there is usually a clear hierarchy for better or for worse on most sets but in most working environments too. It can make things seem pretty bizarre at time though the end goal is to present a kind of acceptable normality. Imo generally it helps if personality is dialled quite far down. You’ll be expected to laugh at the directors jokes and no one is going to appreciate the hilarious grip when its time to be serious. Read the room. The focus is on work and although hanging out might be the illusion the reality is people are all there because they are being paid to be there not because its more fun than hanging out with their partner or kids. For younger people maybe its more experiential like being at college and the work doesnt need to be such a priority given the nature of it. Perhaps its humour based or about a vibe that needs levity around set to keep the atmosphere light but in my experience if the project matters and has sensitivities at stake for instance in documentary or in creating the right supportive environment for talent to perform to their best in what might be emotionally challenging scenes then the crew and even the dp, and even the director everyone needs to dial down their authentic self a little and remember its not a barbecue and a game of softball in the park with friends its work and that usually means focus and that the client is paying and expecting professional behaviour and results. Being polite considerate patient and kind never goes unnoticed. Maybe a reassuring smile can be more helpful than feeling the need to be your authentic self. We are all perhaps a little too complex to let too much out of the bag at work. Responding to pressure and the unforeseen with calm and a can do attitude tends to work well and again being able to have a sense of humour and be self effacing doesn’t hurt but jokes are different. Absolutely, show that you are happy to be there, enthusiastic and part of a team. Maybe don’t take yourself too seriously but be serious about the work. Its a cliche so apologies for that but hopefully it makes sense. Just some thoughts.

Hey man I have a question. I’m on my way to 500k followers on social media but I feel like my passion is kind of in film. I’m about to release a short film for my TikTok but I’m wondering do you have any advice on how I could use my following to get more involved in paying film work? I have a very niche audience based around quite a controversial subject but I think it represents my artistic taste, as I love controversial films and would love to make my own one day.
Any advice would be appreciated, can’t say I’m loving my day job atm
