I once had the Canon EF 40 mm 2.8 pancake, then sold it to get the RF 24mm 1.8, which I love. While it's not a pancake, it's compact enough for general photography, especially in low light or the need for more bokeh. I'm glad that Canon are making these compact high aperture primes. I'd love a 40f2 pancake also. Like the Nikon Z L. So long as they're performing as well as my f2 XF glass there are no negatives for me. 😊

This lens makes a lot of sense on APS-C. And while I agree APS-C lenses are preferred, with this tiny amount of glass it really doesn't matter. I think producing an APS-C specific version would only raise the cost because the sales are too low to offset the cheaper lens design.

You can't really make the argument of preferring APS-C native lenses on Canon with how they treat their users with the locked mount. It's either buy a slow-ish zoom, or deal with something like this, losing your weather sealing benefit if you're on something like the R7, and suck it up. TBH, this on the recent bare bones R100, or higher spec R50, would be interesting as a Canon R budget walk around setup (if you have to have Canon) since there's nothing like the M6(II) or M200.

So glad Canon finally gave us 28mm in RF mount! I bought it and found it’s plenty sharp wide open, especially for portraits. Hopefully Canon will provide a firmware update for focus breathing correction.
28mm for portraits.. is rather odd. For a group shot maybe, on crop you're not going to get separation, on full frame it's just so bloody wide.. distortion is pretty much mandatory and you really have to control / keep your angle of view flat (vertically) more or less. Yep... Just odd.

I wish someone would actually test this lens on the body it was designed for, the R10, R50, R100, not the full frame bodies. Oh, well, I just received mine, going off the reviews I found with full frame bodies, so, now to go out for a test run. I know it had some issues that can be corrected in post processing, so, I hope I didn't waste my money. UPDATE: It was not a waste of money for landscapes. The R10 handled it well and ON1 2024 did its job. The only thing I don't like about the lens is that the lens cap turns freely, so, either I have a faulty lens or it is a design flaw.
You guys are awesome. And I am saying that from Edmonton. Haha. Thanks so much for this review. I was thinking to purchase this to just have something on my camera when walking around and you've demonstrated it would be good for that!
Intersting that there is no mention of the distortion. I have shot ALOT of 28mm lenses on Leica M and these often need very little correction in post. But just like on the Leica Q series, this lens is actually a little wider than 28mm and has quite alot of distortion. Straight lines become bowed/concave. If you turn off lens correction in LR/C1 you will see this. The issue with this is that it makes the images look like they were shot more of a wide angle than 28mm usually is considered. This is an issue if you place anything near the edge. An arm or a face or anything will look very wide. If you turn corrections off, you will see that it is not cause by the lens, but by correction the image very much. To me it was a deal-breaker and i sold the lens again right away. The size and IQ is fine, but the final image suffered to much from the distortion.
This is the info that doesn't get focused on enough, imho. Lenses usually have an issue or two, but when its as blatant as this lens...it should be explicitly and clearly communicated to prospective customers. There hasn't been enough conversation about canon especially designing lenses with obvious flaws, and DEPENDING on software correction to make up the difference. They are already saving a ton of money with plastic optics, no hoods included, and slow lenses...not enough folks are talking about it. Cheers, be well.
Every other review i have seen praised this little gem's sharpness. It is reported to be sharper than both 35f1.8 rf and 24f1.8 rf at f2.8 How come yoir copy has sharpness of soft spread butter at f2.8
That is what I was wondering about as well. TDP and Optical Limits in particular claim excellent optical performance in terms of sharpness, with the only real weaknesses being flares and vignetting.
@@philipphill9518 If this is the case then there seems to be a greater copy to copy variation with those Canon lenses. Also the sensor resolution plays a role in those tests.
8:18 I don't recognize the blue bird icon from any current social media companies. (kidding...) Great information about this lens. Makes me want to buy one.
Nice lens but if Canon allowed Sigma and Tamron into the RF mount they could make these type of entry level lenses much better at the same price. Canon makes great L lenses but most of their non-L lenses are sort of suspect. But then again, for $300 it is useable. But then again, Sigma could do it with excellent sharpness at f2.8 for the same price.
I gave this lens a try, and whilst I liked it, around the same time in the UK the 35mm f1.8 IS macro was £5 more than this lens over Prime day... The 28mm is no longer in my kitbag and the 35mm already a firm favourite. Just my opinion (I wanted to love it but it's just not my old EF 40mm).
The 28mm focal length is my favorite, it's MY "35mm"...that being said, a f/2.8 aperture just isn't fast enough for me from a prime lense. Great video as always fellas.
One game I play when watching Jordan & Chris videos is recognizing the filming locations - knew the sun-dial at Elliston Park early in this one. ( enjoyed the content too ... ! )
Late to the game, If I own EF 28mm F/1.8 USM, Will this RF pancake perform as well or better in "sharpness"? I heard both lens are soft. I used it on 70D, and now that I have R6 with IBIS, I feel like to trade them lenses. I like the compactness of RF28 compared to EF28+adapter.
Canon’s affordable primes are weirdly great sleeper hits. Paper specs seem meh compared to other brand offerings. But damn are they affordable and are they good for the price. Plus a PD sling fits my Canon R5, 35mm and 50mm without skipping a beat - on another system before I’d be forced to pick one body and one of those focal lengths.

@@bathvader I mean image quality. however, also in sharpness and build quality. Nikon offers all of this for a much cheaper price than Canon. I am Canon user. But Nikon delivers much better quality for a much lower price than Canon. At Canon RF, you either have very expensive and excellent equipment or medium-priced equipment of dubious quality. A Nikon Z6 Mark II + Z 50mm f/1.8 can only match the Canon R6 Mark II + RF 50mm f/1.2 in terms of quality. But at very different prices. Canon does not give quality options with an intermediate price. If you want quality at Canon, you have to pay a LOT of money. I just didn't leave Canon because I already have an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM + EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM. The R10 handled it well and ON1 2024 did its job. The only thing I don't like about the lens is that the lens cap turns freely, so, either I have a faulty lens or it is a design flaw.
I use the 28 on both my R5 & R50 and the images are great!
Haha love the farm boy photoshoot!
Jordan as a farmer was bloody amazing, thank you guys for that 😅
You guys are awesome. And I am saying that from Edmonton. Haha. Thanks so much for this review. I was thinking to purchase this to just have something on my camera when walking around and you've demonstrated it would be good for that!
another great review. But what bag are you using in the shots?
That's the new @wotancraft Pilot Backpack
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always, keep up with the awesome content 👍
What was in Jordans Pocket @ 2:54? I think we need a podcast segment on this.
Jokes aside I do wonder what EDC the guys have on these shoots.
Check out the Westcott heavy-duty stand, that thing is making me nervous with the FJ 400.
Chris, I think 2:43 & 2:51 of Jordan are awesome!
@@simonmaduxx6777 I agree. It’s sad tendency from canon that all there non-l wider lenses seem to build on this idea of just correcting in post.
You guys really let loose this episode...and I loved it. 😂👌 Keep up the amazing work guys!!! 💯
Every time you start an episode, I expect you to say "Welcome back to PetaPixel DPReview TV viewers..." 😂
2:09 - 30 seconds of comedy gold!!! 😂😂😂
I'd like to see more of Chris skate-boarding
The farmer bit had me cryin 😂
Was thinking of buying a small point and shoot, for my honeymoon. But, I think I'll just go with this lens.
If the center sharpness is good, when you throw it on an r10/7, the sharpness is across the frame.
Dem portraits! Epic 🤣
Like for the intro alone! 😂 Keep up the great content guys!
I think you can also make some old EF/EF-S lenses on new R cameras videos
Seems they're following up the Nikon Z 26mm 2.8 (which I like!)
Damn, jordan can be use in a breaking bad or better call saul poster
I wish canon would make more pancake lenses. I think a 35mm pancake would be nice to have for run and gunning
Those portraits awakened something in me.
I love this lens on my EOS R
8:18 I don't recognize the blue bird icon from any current social media companies. (kidding...) Great information about this lens. Makes me want to buy one.
My 1st rf lens
Nice lens but if Canon allowed Sigma and Tamron into the RF mount they could make these type of entry level lenses much better at the same price. Canon makes great L lenses but most of their non-L lenses are sort of suspect. But then again, for $300 it is useable. But then again, Sigma could do it with excellent sharpness at f2.8 for the same price.
Can’t wait to get one!
You say you love the 28mm focal length but hate the 35. Those are so similar! Please explain...
Saying that 35, 50, 24mm or whatever is "boring" has nothing to do with real photography. It's like saying I love driving my car in 3rd gear.
Oh cool, the day after I bought it!
And the front element is so tiny, they probably could have made it an f2 keeping the same body size :(
One game I play when watching Jordan & Chris videos is recognizing the filming locations - knew the sun-dial at Elliston Park early in this one.
There is too much Canon hyperbole in your comment. These lenses aren't better than their traditional DSLR counterparts.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas There's too much Nikon saltiness in your comment, boy. Curb that. Nobody said the RF lenses vastly outperformed the EF versions -- even though they do outperform them, even if slightly. But they are smaller, affordable, and they fit into my bag with the smaller mirrorless bodies. Unlucky for you, I have experience shooting on Nikon as well, and unlucky for you I know that I wouldn't want to or be able to lug more than 1 body and 1 Z lens in my bag. Maybe open your eyes to wider possibilities rather than camping out at one side. Being objective is possible, yknow? PS, your photos look like overproduced crap. Hang back on the sharpness slider, maybe?

The quality of the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S and Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S lenses are on par with the respective Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L and Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L for 1/3 of the price.
@@michelecintramika8482 Build quality? Image quality? Sharpness? What quality are you talking about? I've used both lenses, and I've owned the Z 50mm f1.8. It was by far my favourite Z lens (I also owned the 35mm, and owned but sold the 85mm). It was definitely built well. I loved the weather sealing (walked through London in the rain and it did not flinch - I did). It produced excellent images. But it is not an f1.2 lens.
Also note that Nikon slapped its S line moniker onto the Z 50mm f1.8. It is a professional lens. It is also professionally priced (albeit cheaper because I buy all my lenses 2nd hand).
@@bathvader
I mean image quality. however, also in sharpness and build quality. They are lenses that I can put on any fullframe or aps-c camera from any company using an adapter that will give me fantastic files. So I don't need to invest in quality RF lenses. But if I ever decide to use a Canon with native lenses, I'll leave Canon and go to Nikon. Today, if someone wants photographic quality on Canon and doesn't want to use an adapter, you have to be rich.
I have it. It's fun
28mm focal length is my favorite =) But I hope that was a 1.8 macro IS...
bruh.. I was looking for reviews for this lens on YT 5 hours ago. Didn't find any decent stuff. I was wondering why you guys didn't review it and voila.
Agreed - more 28s please people!
Nobody makes 28mm lenses?
Leica Q cameras: "Are we a joke to you?"
Ricoh GR: "Am I a joke to you?"
Why not liking full frame lens on an apsc body? I’m loving it with the EF lens 😏
Love 28!
Also I hope sigma will make a 28mm lens, I have a 24mm and it might not seem like much but to me it’s just a bit too wide and 28 would be just perfect
It's sharp for it's price specially on a tiny glass body
I really like a 28mm. Match it with a 40mm and maybe a 90mm and I’m set.
Ha! that zoom in down under got me.
I’d love a canon lens that was F2 I’d buy that for sure.
Wish these were WRs like the small fujis.
"not weather sealed" pans to shot of rain drops on lens mount...
