I have a Player Jazz bass and when it arrived at my house, straight out of the factory sealed box, it was obvious there was no setup done, the fret edges were rough and the plastic tone knob was broken. To me this was a bit disappointing because I bought cheaper basses that arrived in much better condition. I have also picked up a few Player Series basses at my local Guitar Center and the setup and fret edges were the same on those, on one particular Player Precision there were a couple fret edges that were bad enough to draw blood if your weren't careful. I think anyone buying these needs to go through a store that offers free setups and inspection or factor in the cost of a good professional setup, especially if they are not comfortable doing their own setups and minor maintenance.
Once I got mine all setup and replaced the broken knob (the fret edges on mine although rough were not bad enough to bother filing), it plays and sounds amazing! I have much more expensive basses in my collection but my Player Series Jazz gets, by far, the most use.

I have a player J and a player P and strangely, regarding the fret edges, the problem was on one of the two only, they were nice and smooth on the J, and pretty rough on the P to the point where I had to buy a file and work on the frets a bit. Might be the issue with the player series, that they're not consistent in terms of the finish.

for anyone wondering - i rented a player jazz for a couple months, and really liked it, played great, nice fit and finish, sounded fantastic. i went with the player plus j-bass instead and for as good as the player is the player plus is incredible. the rolled neck alone is worth the extra bucks. plays similar to my '00 american delux j-bass
both great instruments, but if you can splurge for the 'plus' you won't regret it (i got the olympic white w/ the maple neck)

I prefer the through body sting set up but I’m still super stoked with this bass. It’s really everything you want in a bass ❤

The difference between the ultra and the player is the ultra has stacked humbuckers and the player has single coils

Is there a way to retrofit the stacked humbuckers to Player ?

@@izziOnBassI'm not sure if single coils will be compatible with the Ultra's preamp.

_from Germany:_ Thank you so much indeed for this review. I am thinking about buying a 7ender Jazz for months but I could not decide between an American Professional or a MIM Jazz Bass...Finally I choose the MIM Player Jazz in polar white w/ maple neck. A great help this video has been!

I've had 3 player series Fenders and in overall those are good quality basses, but there are faults: fretwork is a lottery, some of the basses have sharp and unpolished frets, also set up needed for most of them, including intonation, pickup height, etc...If you want a Fender, with some extra work you can make it a beast bass, but if you're not attached to this brand, I think there are better options inn this price bracket, eg. Yamaha BB series.

I have a 69 Fender Precision w/Jazz Neck at the time custom color, Ocean Turqoise, block inlay on rosewood neck/bought at the music store I worked for in 1969. 2024 and Fender Custom Shop says "Sorry we won't touch it because you don't have a receipt"; although I do have owners manual with name of "E Paxton", only Custom Shop in Colorado is HB Woodsong, Boulder. I thought Fender had control of their channel. I believe Woodsong is telling Fender that no receipt, no work. Moving away from Fender. If they would do this to a Senior, think what they'll do to YOU. Buyer Beware.

Are you trying to utilize the warranty ? Why wouldn't they repair your instrument.

Fender gave a Lifetime Warranty for all Custom Shop products. First they told me they needed a copy of receipt/I bought the bass in 1969 and did have the Owners Manual , nothing. I did get a phone call from HB Woodsong. This bass is one of 29; it looks like the same jazz bass neck as ones being put on American made jazz basses (only it's on a Precision body with split pickups (July 1969); Woodsong told me that they could try to straighten the neck ($1k) + any other issues related to this specific problem but no guaranty. I passed and bought a new $1100 Mexican made Jazz Player Plus. I was looking at Sadowsky but their lower price basses are made in China. Thanks for asking!

It gets to be about the necks. Make the americans with the mx neck profiles and never look back. But the mx's just feel better.
