Hey Scott just wanted to say these different types of videos where you aren't necessarily talking about technique are what inspired me into painting miniatures. I have a pretty bad spinal injury stemming from a bad weight lifting accident about 5 years ago. I haven't been painting for much longer than a few months but painting has become my main coping mechanism now in an especially dark time in my life. It's the first thing I've really felt completely motivated about doing since I hurt myself. Paint more minis!
These are some of the most important videos I have seen on You Tube. Advanced painters showing where they came from helps those intimidated by your current level of skill understand that you have to start somewhere and skill comes from many years of practice. some succeed others fail but if you keep at it you will progress. Thank you for this.
I'm finishing my old miniatures off, 20 years down the line. It has been an awesome way to relax, get back into the hobby, and learn new skills. And it has practically cost me nothing (call it a 20-year investment); my Citadel paints are still fine after two decades and all the minis are still playable (mostly). I even started a regular blog to help others get through their mountain of plastic and metal, and that has largely been inspired by TH-camrs like Miniac, LukesAPS, and Tabletop Minions. The community here is awesome. I"m loving every minute of it!
Was honestly expecting about three to five times that number of minis. I think you are spot on about not selling your old figs. About five years ago I seriously considered liquidating most of my collection. However, just recently I bought a house and let me tell you that unpacking and going through all my old minis was so much fun and I was so glad at that moment that I kept them.
I agree with you 100% about not selling or giving away too many old minis . I painted a 1000 pt imperial fist army many years ago when the Captain Lysander model came out . I for once got the yellow armor perfect . I sold the army a few years ago during a rough financial patch after keeping it for 10 years or so . I got a good price for it but not a day goes buy I look where it was in my display case and miss it ..and I’ve never been able to recreate that shade of yellow again no matter what ......
Scott! This was a great look back! My 9-year old daughter and I watched and she is fascinated by D&D right now and loves watching me paint. Thanks for sharing your journey. Great ending, too!
When I was 13 I didnt understand concepts like "take your time" and "thin your paints". My catachans from 2004 look like a posse of recovering burn victims.
A year ago I walked past a Games Workshop store with my 10 year old who dragged me in (after I peered in the window for a few minutes!). Shortly after I dug all my old minis and gaming stuff from my Dad's attic and I'm regularly painting again, but now with my son. It was a real nostalgia trip to look back at the minis I painted 25 years ago and to see the progression I made back then, after a year of painting I am of a comparable standard to when i was 15! Thanks for this video :)
Respect, i just started my first ever miniatures, three space marine intercessors, i spent 4 hours on them and only managed to prime and base them but they look dope, can't wait to finish them, can't believe how long it takes
Hey man idk if you remember but I commented a few days ago saying I was gonna out and buy some paints and some figures, and I finally went and did it today! The guy at my local games workshop is super nice and helpful and supportive, I told him I found out about it because of you and he actually watches your vids to! What a small world, I’ve barely scratched the surface and I’m already loving this hobby
Haven't been painting long, maybe 2 years or so but you've been a great source of info and inspiration. This was an awesome video, very glad you feel comfortable making this as a change of pace and aren't beholden to the usual TH-cam bs. Thanks, man!
I started playing in early 90's (at about 16-18), my son then got into the hobby about 2007, again stopped playing about 2014, he got into playing basketball for his country, now my son is 21 and back into the game, along with me. still have kept our mini's and we are both starting again in 2020, with some of our crappy painted minis, conversions , proxied units (space wolves using dire wolves and kit bashed orcs). After watching this kinda glad i didn't sell them, enjoying painting and looking forward to playing again and so is my son!, good video
Dude, I found my HeroQuest enamel painted craptastic minis recently in my mom’s basement, and I’m SO HAPPY to play and share them with my kids! I agree, don’t unload your old stuff. There’s so much love infused into them that they’ll bring joy again someday.
I know what u mean. The amount of times with my gaming group when someone mentions a mini and I say, "I've got that...... in a box". It's actually become a meme to me. Some of them even finish the sentence b4 I do. Or even steal the saying and twist it, "have you got that mini.... in a box"?
Hey Scott! I remember being 10 years old and picking up my first Eldar Vyper, exactly the same year as yourself actually! I had the same thing as well, kicking off painting LOTR models but falling in love with 40k. I was playing up until I was about maybe 16 years old and ended up stopping for a few years when I went to college (UK) and studied music. I only picked it up again about 2 maybe 3 years ago? I've been slowly progressing through an army of Dark Angels, and still haven't finished them, but I'm kinda hoping I'm able to get them done now the UK's on lockdown. I genuinely really loved this video as it made me feel so nostalgic for my old armies and reminded me when I use to enter Youngblood competitions every year - thank you for this, it really brought a smile to my face!
I completely get what you mean about nostalgia. At the peak of my hobby, I had three armies - Space wolves, Eldar, Necrons - but lack of space and a gradual loss of interest meant I sold off two of the armies. However I kept my Space wolves, always intending to go back at some point and paint more and redo the paint scheme. A couple of years ago I finally got round to doing this and redid my paint work. I tidied things up, adding shading/highlighting, redoing the bases and varnishing them. In some cases, I took apart models that I wasn't 100% happy with and gave them new poses and parts. I may have largely moved on from Warhammer but I still look back with fond memories. I kept my Space wolves as a reminder of those happy and more carefree times, as something to show for my old hobby. I'm glad I never parted with them and I imagine I'll hold onto them until I die!
Hey Scott! This absolutely inspires me to paint more minis and to keep the ones that are older. Thanks for showing us this video, I honestly loved this one!
Wow honestly you were so talented, right of the bat. My first minis as a kid looked so terrible. I had no knowledge whatsoever about painting. I even started off using enamel color because I had no clue.
Nice work, man. I have just started getting back into the hobby after 20 years away. I found my old mini's and looking at how I did things back then and now I'm working on new techniques. This video helps keep expectations in check as I look at the past. I appreciate that. Dig the channel.
Scott. I love your channel. I don’t watch every video but was super glad I watched this one because of the nostalgia hits. I just got back into LOTR SBG after over a decade of my minis (Rohan, Isengard and the Balrog) sitting as a sea of grey. You partly inspired me to return to painting and it has been a joy as a 30 yr old. I was also surprised to hear we share the same love of wood elves. I’ve been a huge fan of these dark hippies since I was 9 and still have a large army that has yet to be painted for anxiety reasons. Using the LOTR digs as practice so I can really nail the beautiful sculpts from old and new woodies and sylvaneth. Thanks again, you rock! PS I’m a big metal fan so it’s fun that you’re loosely themed that way
I was once going to sell an unpainted Carnifex because I had just that. Bit I decided I'd never get another chance to paint one so I built and painted it. Then I just added all these other Tyrannids around it. Haven't actually played with them yet but they've been on some demo tables for my club. One day they'll get a run in Swatters.
I still have my first SM Sargent from the box that had SM Vs Dark Eldar. I do t strip of sell any of my minis, they are a visual history of where I started, where I am and motivation for where I’m going. Keep up the kickass content.
From 1988 thru 1995 I had painted and amassed a collection of D&D/Fantasy minis of around 200+ (Ral Partha & Grenadier mostly). In 1997, my entire collection was stolen. I lament their loss to this day. I have no pics to show for my work either. It was such a massive blow that it was another 10 years before I even thought of getting back into the hobby.
So true you should hold on to your armies!! One of my few real regrets is selling my Tau that I'd learned how to paint on and spent loads of hours army planning, painting in the standard scheme and then re-painting in a dusted maroon and light blue urban scheme, to my local hobby shop to (kinda?) finance a transition to fantasy via the Skull Pass box.... right before I moved towns and my buddies moved on to other past times. Pretty bad decision looking back on it and really wish I had em today
I still have miniatures I painted over 30 years ago when I was a teenager in high school. Proud to say that not one of them has so much as a paint chip missing. :P
Made me have a look at my old minis. Mostly LotR as well. I still got an old army of Harad lying arround from ages ago, including a Mûmak. Those were fun times.. Also fitting shirt for a walk down memory lane!
Man, your videos are just incredible. I don't even paint miniatures but I'm still subscribed to your channel because I love the passion that you have for your craft and I love the quality of your videos. Keep up the great work.
I just came across some minis I painted back in the early 80's. What an eye opener, I really sucked. I recently got back into painting, so I've been stripping some of the better sculpts and repainting them as short fun breaks while I paint my Blackstone Fortress box. It's interesting to look back at stuff you thought was cool when you were young.
I absolutely agree with you on the topic of not giving away or selling your old minis. I really wish I had never sold my first army (Black Templars) and a few tanks and infantry model from my IG. BTW: Your Emperor's Champion was one of the models I used as inspiration when oainting mine. I used to have one back in the day when I first got into the hobby, so painting him again was one hell of a trip down memory lane.
Keep up the awesome work, Scott! So glad you've been able to make the jump to full time. I will become a patron soon, I swear it (when I saw Exodus and Testament CDs in the background, that sealed it)!
Hi Scott!your collection looks so cool Could you make a video where you show how to paint the eternal guard pls? or at least which colours you suggest cant wait to see that sisters of the watch completely painted!
Y'know, I kept my old minis from the 80s and 90s... and I still use them today to play Advanced Heroquest with my kids :) And I just took up painting again after a 30-year break. So very glad I kept my old minis.
I like your review a lot. Planning to do my own as soon as I will have my 10 years hobby anniversary. Fortunately I NEVER sold any painted minitaures so I own a mass of Skaven and a Middenheim Army like you do. Thank you for letting us see your first steps into painting with LotR. It's always good to see, that even the pros started as we did. Greetings from Potsdam, Germany!
I had a couple of big armies when I was younger and grew out of them as a older teen and sold them for $1000. At the time I was racing rc cars. Now at 30 I regret selling them. But I'm buying models and rebuilding my army. Your videos really helped with my painting. But I wish I could of seen how I painted them back in the days. Prob spray painted. Thanks man
Great video! You're from Minnesota? Me too although much older than you. I got into minis for D&D purposes starting about 3 years ago. I mostly work with re-purposed/re-imagined stuff and I can't paint anywhere in your league. Still, after seeing your collection, I feel pretty good about the one I've hodgepodged together. For me, it's all about gaming options; gets after something similar to you talking about how the background can help you know how to paint a mini. When you see a mini, you just start to get ideas for the game. Super job!
I feel you on the selling your armies. I lost my tau fire squad and battlesuits.... that was 12 years and I still regret losing it until now. Those were some good days
This is a great statement about collecting in general, as well as miniature collecting. I find myself missing a few of the games I played on Gameboy and nes as a kid, but traded them away. Same with a bunch of minis from various armies. But I still have my first ever painted mini, a metal space Marine Terminator with assault cannon. Looks terrible in comparison to my most recently painted stuff, but I love it so much. Still has bits of my childhood driveway stuck on the base as well.
I enjoyed seeing your collection. I have sold a lot of my own minis in the past and certainly regret selling some of them. Not all of them mind you as with armies I no longer play I do like the idea of someone else getting enjoyment out of them when I no longer play them
Oh, I've been spring-cleaning the shit out of my hobby-horde without a drop of regret since time out of mind . But I do keep my faves, and I take copious pictures of the ones I throw away. Also, you were clearly talented from the beginning. Stuff I painted back when I was 10 looked honestly AWFUL. So kudos! It's amazing to see your journey. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Cool really. To be noted, I sold two copies of Zombiecide (season 1 and that fantasy version whatever it was called) with all the figures painted up, I have made a commision paint job of an AoS chaos army and I painted about 200 Malifaux figures just for my own amusement (and tossed them all when I was going to move and had no idea where to put them), and on top of that probably 100's of figures in other scales, for other games and so on - all gone. And frankly, whenever someone else got them (ie not the trashcan), I have felt pretty happy. People have liked my figures and have been happy to use them to play with. And as long as I know that, and that they are being used as they are supposed to and not chewing toys for dogs, I'm happy. I don't miss them.
Nostalgia is strong. Before I sold my old house and moved into my current one, I took photos of all my old 1/24th scale car models with plans to toss them out. some of them are terrible. I still have the box of them in my new basement because I can't seem to bring myself to throw them out. Also: shout out from the Twin Cities!
When you come up on your mid 30s, I'll be curious how opinions may change. I've held onto everything since coming back to the game in 2003ish, but regrettably sold my tyranids from 97 and it was my first army. I've recently come to the realization that I just can't fit it in like I did then and it's become a lot easier to break from the nostalgia. Truth is though, there is still a special spot for that first army still there.
Nice refreshing video, good stuff, is nice to see that you too painted like me when u started, sometimes i tend to forget you used to were a mortal like us
I went through a weird cycle of emotions seeing the guild ball morticians. I'm super excited to see you play and even more excited to see that you play morticians... but then I realized that you have an entirely painted guild and they won't be on a video with you painting them. Ah well... at least we may get some videos of you playing because that would be really cool.
Loving all of your "story"-miniatures! I immediatly create stories in my mind for all sorts of characters, may it be from pen&paper-, board- or videogames. Will try doing that with miniatures as well. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that sometimes the miniature can gives you "limits" because of how it is build etc.
First of all, great video! Nostalgia can be good and i sold 2 models i painted myself once and never would do it again! Loved the fact you also like GB and would love to see a game from you :-). Also i just reviewed my first ever completely painted minis from Malifaux, my gremlins. And even though i look at them now just base colors and a brown wash, not even highlighting, i put a lot of work in the bases and it paid off. Sometimes i want to repaint them, but on the oother hand they are a testament of my beginnings and the pile of shame is growing ^^. Thanks Scott!
Here's one for you Scott. There are a lot of tutorials around the place for NMM and typically this is gold or silver. With the newer faction for Death coming out soon, I wonder if you would have any thoughts on Black metal or other cold tones (dark blue/green/purple) and how to accomplish this look from a very dark base as opposed to the mid tone that is used commonly for the gold/silver
Not into miniatures myself though I have painted a few 3d prints and I watch Miniac and others due to their pure talent. I agree with Scott, don't give or sell items that you like, you will regret it in the future. In the late 1980's/90's I had a few Amiga computers and after the collapse of Commodore computers in 1994 I decided to sell my Amiga CD32, a decision I now regret :( Though I am glad that I did not end up selling my Amiga 2000, which I still have to this day :)
ive lost a Blood Angels and a Vlka Fenryka army from when i was a kid. they had terrible paint jobs but a good selection of 90s-00s GW models including the 3rd edition starter set a couple of lead-based models!. Then my mum 'lost' half my flesh tearers army from when i was at uni 9 years ago. this hurts a lot cos i put so much effort (and money) into this army. but it is what it is! im planning on getting back into the hobby when i return to england next year :D
I remember like 3 or 4 years ago, when i was a young lad, someone on ebay was selling a MASSIVE army of orks that was all tau looted vehicles and weapons. It was being sold on an auction so i hope who ever sold that army got a lot, or regrets it. They were very well painted and i want to know who made them because it was probably the coolest thing ive ever seen.
Thank you Scott soo much for your works and your videos. I'm really thankfull for your job.. I would like to ask you if it's possible making a project about eavy metal space wolfes.. I'm asking it because today is my birthday so it will be awesome if you could do that. Thank you again for ALL your works and for all you have done since now !
Oh hey look my submission got used for the outro! That's pretty awesome! Thanks, Scott!
Thanks for the outro!
I loved it!
Hey Scott just wanted to say these different types of videos where you aren't necessarily talking about technique are what inspired me into painting miniatures. Keep strong brother. And of course, paint more minis. :-)
PAINT MORE MINIS , brother!🤘
Get lost in the paint brother. Keep at it, im about as new to it as you are!
Wishing you all the best, Robert
I now always use two hands when handling my penis.. We have similar experiences in life.
I love it!!! :-) It's great to see a lot of familiar figures as well as the early stuff. You're building a powerful collection!
Hi, Brent!

That PAINT MORE MINIS!!! at the end was solid.

Feels good when 13-year-old Scott paints better than 35-year-old you!
Scott! This was a great look back! My 9-year old daughter and I watched and she is fascinated by D&D right now and loves watching me paint. Thanks for sharing your journey. Great ending, too!
Ikr u feel embarrassed 😳

Keeping your first minis always is a good thing to remember how far you've come. A good video for nostalgia and self reflection

I’m not gonna lie to u, the diorama of the elf lingering at home before setting off to battle gave me goose bumps! So talented man
Respect, i just started my first ever miniatures, three space marine intercessors, i spent 4 hours on them and only managed to prime and base them but they look dope, can't wait to finish them, can't believe how long it takes
+1 for WFB love!! Your story about the Wood Elves made me appreciate the folks that keep 8th edition WFB alive.

Wow Scott, you’ve really got a talent for painting models,I really envy you.

Ok. Great.
But what about your Unpainted Miniature Collection?
I know what u mean. The amount of times with my gaming group when someone mentions a mini and I say, "I've got that...... in a box". It's actually become a meme to me. Some of them even finish the sentence b4 I do. Or even steal the saying and twist it, "have you got that mini.... in a box"?
What do you mean? Everyone knows that mini painters only buy more minis when they are finished painting the ones they already own.
@@bestmarty if only. I once googled mini collecting addiction.

Great collection and painting. Thx to share your video, made with passion and big talents. This is really inspiring.

New uploads from you never fail to reignite excitement and passion for this hobby, time for me to get those kits out the cupboard and get to work.
Only been doing this a year, love when FB pops up with my olf work to see where I've come from.
I literally watch to the end just to hear your outro. Can't wait for the full song 😊(I know that's not a thing, but still I hear it in my head)
Its reassuring i'm not the only one that gets 2/3's the way through an army and stops painting!
I still have my first SM Sargent from the box that had SM Vs Dark Eldar. I do t strip of sell any of my minis, they are a visual history of where I started, where I am and motivation for where I’m going. Keep up the kickass content.

The video for fogotten paths, got me started in painting busts and large minis and i thank you for it.

Great painter, love his painting style
great to see your evolution of painting skill and that you can paint at a lower standard for speed
love this video thanks for taking us along for this trip through your hobby!
You've done a really great job of painting your figures, really impressive
wow~ amazing collection👍
and nice painting skills. I actually envy your techniques.
you are the real miniature maniac.
the wood elves repaint looks amazing.
Aww that was really sweet, thanks for sharing that with us!
beautiful video of your painting history
Keep up the awesome work, Scott! So glad you've been able to make the jump to full time. I will become a patron soon, I swear it (when I saw Exodus and Testament CDs in the background, that sealed it)!
Hi Scott!your collection looks so cool
Could you make a video where you show how to paint the eternal guard pls? or at least which colours you suggest
cant wait to see that sisters of the watch completely painted!
Good job Slim, thanks for sharing.
"Now is the time to start your history"
Thanks for this. I like it!
3:49 Holy Hell, those look beautiful.
Y'know, I kept my old minis from the 80s and 90s... and I still use them today to play Advanced Heroquest with my kids :) And I just took up painting again after a 30-year break. So very glad I kept my old minis.
Guild ball is fantastic. Looking fwd to seeing more content
Phenomenal. A real credit to you. Thanks for sharing.
Im SO GLAD Im not the only person who gives my miniatures stories...I dunno, it just makes them feel more REAL to me.
Thanks man
I've never cried before but this was too beautiful.
I actually really love the Wood Elf "Forgotten Path".. a very beautiful piece of work
Great video!
Thanks for the advice of keeping those new minis!
Best video yet, we all started somewhere good to know you did too
Tbh I was expecting someone so good at painting minis to have had to do a lot more then that. Skillz
Love you long time Scott! Always a true dude. Impregnate me with your minis!
Great video - thanks for sharing
This is a great statement about collecting in general, as well as miniature collecting. I find myself missing a few of the games I played on Gameboy and nes as a kid, but traded them away. Same with a bunch of minis from various armies. But I still have my first ever painted mini, a metal space Marine Terminator with assault cannon. Looks terrible in comparison to my most recently painted stuff, but I love it so much. Still has bits of my childhood driveway stuck on the base as well.
I enjoyed seeing your collection. I have sold a lot of my own minis in the past and certainly regret selling some of them. Not all of them mind you as with armies I no longer play I do like the idea of someone else getting enjoyment out of them when I no longer play them
Oh, I've been spring-cleaning the shit out of my hobby-horde without a drop of regret since time out of mind
I discovered this channel this month, I'm addicted to this and now I want some Warhammer figures.
I feel you mate! Great job!
There will be more morts in the future to paint!
Snap! Twin cities?!!! Bro beans! My man! Represent t frozen lakes of Minnesnowta! 😂❤️. Much love
Best video. Love your story, bro!
This is awesome! Now I can tell my wife, "I'm not a hoarder! Some guy on the intertubes told me ta keep all my old Warhammer minis, so I'm doin' it!"
ive lost a Blood Angels and a Vlka Fenryka army from when i was a kid. they had terrible paint jobs but a good selection of 90s-00s GW models including the 3rd edition starter set a couple of lead-based models!.
GUIIILLLD BAAAAALL!!!!!! Oh man I love that game so much
As a new(ish) subscriber, this video was awesome to watch. You've been my favorite to watch lately! Also love the Warcraft shirt
your painting skills are incredible. i hope you will get your vampire army back. and thx for this fantastic youtube chanel.
