- Mata Hari, the famous exotic dancer, has come to represent the power of beauty and feminine seduction. The most influential men of her time surrendered to her. As the first World War broke out across Europe, France saw performer Mata Hari, a Dutch national with the ability to freely cross borders, as an intelligence asset. However, Mata Hari is later convicted of spying for Germany and executed by firing squad. Was she a double agent? Or a scapegoat? After more than 100 years, the question remains: Who was Mata Hari really, and was she guilty?

Law of power No. 6.
"always have an aura of mystery..be wanted by all, but commit to No one"
(I think that was the chapters title)
Mata Hari was a woman ahead of her times. She came to Paris a divorced woman and reinvented herself as an exotic dancer and took a multitude of wealthy lovers. But when war hit Europe, what the French had loved about her was now looked upon with suspicion and contempt. She came from a neutral country and could travel wherever she wanted and she spoke several languages, so that also brought her under suspicion by French authorities. The only "secrets" she ever passed to Germany were commonly known gossip. And she was too naive to realize that, as she had fabricated stories about herself and her past, others could do the same thing to her but with fatal consequence
beautiful is sometimes a cause of misfortune to many beautiful women. Doesn't matter if she is intentional or unintentional getting involved with those powerful and wealthy people. When she get involved with these dangerous people, wouldn't surprise that many of them are mentally ill or psychopath aka some aristocrat, she is getting herself in real big trouble.
She wasn't ahead of her time . She went backwards to being an animal who're like a pig 😂😂😂
Intelligent, beautifully presented and informative. Thank you.
This is the best documentary of Mata Hari.

Awesome docu brave women in most difficult time
Mata Hari is not eye of the sun, it is The Sun. It is written as Matahari in Indonesian.
from the way it's written Mata hari (with a space in between) it means The Eye Of The Day.
@@coffeesweet1ven between space matahari still mean eye of the day wich is it is sun
The bottom line is besides mata hari having,if not classical beauty, very striking and unique looks, she has something that not all people who are nice looking have, and it's something that can't be learned.. you either have it or you don't and mata hari had it...swag. mata hari had serious swag and that attracts people.
The thing that I think I liked best about the lady was that even though she had wealthy and powerful lovers the man that she fell in love with and wanted to marry was a soldier, not a particularly powerful man in the bigger sense, nor a wealthy man is the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. That tells me that money was important to her while she was responsible alone for her well being and survival but not so important when it came to love and not only that but when he lost sight in one eye and damaged his throat and lungs due to exposure to mustard gas she loved him still. She didn't leave him like some might when they realized that it might be a more difficult future than what was imagined. Just loved him still and wanted to be by his side. I loved that about her most of all.
4:53 "I met Mata Hari when I was extremely young, because my great grandfather was the prosecutor at her trial".
Philippe Collas was born 1957 and Mata Hari was executed in 1917. He NEVER met her.
I think there was a mistake in translation, or it was a figure of speech about how he knew her somehow through his great-grandfather's stories.
@@TheQuaintHousewife Yeah, I mean, someone born 50 years later would never make such a claim. He probably meant something like "I came to know her" or "I began being familiar with her," talking about how he first learned of her.
@@ccali327I agree with you 100%.
It may have been "I was introduced to her through..." there being two different interpretations of the word "introduced".
LOL 😆 Had the same thought
Gotta love the English speaking people that have no understanding of other languages and how translation works
The book is amazing too! I highly recommend it!
Did she ever have a woman friend? It's a red flag of sorts when a woman has no true friends. She doesn't come off as very balanced to me, and though the myth is well in place there isn't much known about the person. Her children were beautiful, and that separation is very sad. Thank you for posting this interesting doc!
She probably didn’t and she sounded like an over-glorified opportunist. She didn’t deserve to be executed like a treasonous traitor though
Reasonably I imagine she had many female friends..
Fun fact : matahari means sun in indonesian

I Thought It Meant “Eye Of The Day” or “The Rising Sun”, is that not Right ?
@@gordisbella719 the word mata means eye and the word hari means day. So you're right, if yu put it side by side, the transliteration of "mata hari" thus will be "the eye of the day".
The rising sun is wrong. But matahari as one word just means the sun.

@@yusuffamily9799why do you feel the need to pi$$ in their Wheaties? They're obviously enjoying the stories for reasons of their own and felt somewhat of a connection to each other because of them both enjoying mata hari via different avenues and it made them happy to make that small connection.
Nothing negative, nothing hateful, and certainly nothing negative aimed at anyone else. So it's odd and rather telling that you felt the need to make such a curt and negative comment about something that had nothing to do with you or anyone else for that matter. I feel sad for you if your life is so sad and pathetic that you feel the need to sling some of that hateful vitriol toward 2 people chatting between themselves happily with no thought or knowledge of you and your negativity. I'll send some positive thoughts your way in the hopes that it helps lift your spirits and outlook.
I hope you have a wonderful and positive day.
I don’t know if Mata Hari herself knew exactly who she was . She created a fantasy life for herself and sold herself as such to her adoring audiences and many lovers. I have no doubt she told each of these men a different story of who she was . She did and said what she felt she had to in order to keep herself cared for and men spending money on her . In the end I think by trying to talk her way out of her situation she instead talked herself into it so deeply there was no way out and she paid the ultimate price for her story telling . Do I think she was a legit spy ? No I don’t . I think she made it up thinking it would save her . She didn’t understand at that point there was no way out for her no matter what she said . They wanted to believe she was a spy and they would get their “proof” one way or another . Whatever else she was Mata Hari was a beautiful mystery and so I think she will continue to be studied and debated for many more years to come
why does that guy keep smiling and laughing when speaking of sexual events and the inequality of men and women? irritating smile event talking about STDs and the death of her children. WTF?
He looks more like an adult film producer than a historian with that smile

I have a few questions which I am burning to know the answer to , if anyone serious ( such as a historian) is in the know ( and not just speculating) . It is thought that her husband passed on syphilis to both herself and to her two children and that her son died of an overdose of mercury poisoning( which was what was used to treat this condition at the time.) at age 2. Also that her daughter (possibly) died at 21 from the same illness or mercury poisoning also. ( I think all this is mentioned in this documentary but i've watched a few both in English and in French)
It is also commonly known that Mata Hari had a lot of different sexual partners. Can you be a carrier for syphilis without having symptoms yourself, and if so does that mean that she passed syphilis all round Parisien society? (If this were true that would sort of make her a monster in my eyes if she was aware; knowingly passing a serious venereal disease around) However if so why is there no mention of some of these men dying from syphilis?
I note she only got pregnant twice ( or should I say that only two children are noted; i guess she could have had abortions) and the contraceptive pill was certainly no-where around at the time. Could it be the case that the syphilis made her infertile or that she was infertile for some other reason? I know when she was captured they used as evidence a liquid used for contraception at the time ( but which was also used by spies at the time if I have understood correctly?) It is highly unlikely that this was a foolproof method of contraception. I was wondering if there was any more information available anywhere about this?
There are definately many different narratives regarding this woman although also significant things which align, especially her childhood and her precociousness and awareness of her charms . These have traditionally been women's sources of influence . I don't go along with the total victim narrative. Biology plays a part in where our lives lead us ,and nothing is black and white in this respect. She was definately ambitious and seemed to enjoy her life in the limelight . She liked powerful men ( especially those in uniform) and it seems she both enjoyed them and manipulated them and vice versa. ( No doubt I'll get some throw-back for that !)
By the way this is undoubtedly the most thorough documentary on the life of Mata Hari ,and with the added bonus of French subtitles. Parfait !
There is no safe amount of Mercury, it's lethal. STD's don't exist. Sickness in humans is caused by either poison, trauma or fying/diving too much.
There's simply no profit in a healthy population.
Avoid sugar and other highly processed bleached white powders, pills, gmo's, steroids, antibio-tics etc.
I do wish that the people who produce documentaries like this one would stop ignoring Past Tense.
They are taking the liberty of putting us in the moment
Yeah, I know, kind of patronizing to us that we already know the outcome of this
Another one ov my favourites mata Hari 😂 true goddess....
Balls ov steel...
Such a shame she was infected with an STD by her own husband then suffered through DV, death of her son and the loss of her daughter. I can't blame her for finding a way to support herself. Sounds like she had a tough life beginning with her childhood.
What I wouldn't give to go through that personal "diary" of hers. I'd read every damn word.
I don't think she was a spy per say, she was desperate to survive. A very sad life.
Matahari in indonesia is SUN
It's difficult to play
Philippe Collas rekon he met Mata Hari when he was very young? That makes him over 100 years old. He said her father was a pathelogical lier too....hmmm
I think there was a mistake in translation, or it was a figure of speech about how he knew her somehow through his great-grandfather's stories.
I was thinking the same thing. She was killed in WWI. My guess his his great-grandfather met her, not him.

There is reason to beleave that mata hari got the idea of exotic dancer from salome, daughthet of herodias that was responsible for the death beheaded of john the baptist. It means mata hari also read the most holy bible old and new testament. Her idols could have been judith and ester and even queen jezebel. Emiliano.
Wonder why she gave up trying to unite w her daughter? We call them sugar daddy's not lovers!
