GW2 lost the heart of the original Guild Wars, the developers didn't understand their core concept. GW2 is just another MMO, where Guild Wars is really special. A group of us have just recently gone back to playing - after 12 years absence. I've forgotten everything, and it is such fun to get back into it all again. If there were a remake of the real Guild Wars, I would be there, imagine the game with 2024 graphics and voice acting...

With over 3000 hours played, I still have content left to experience. To me, it's the skill system that makes it so good. They took the perfect amount of inspiration from Magic The Gathering and Classic CRPGs and turned it into a masterpiece
I LOVED the building aspect of GW1 Primary class + Secondary class and 8 carefully chosen skills. Haven't seen anything like it since, not even in gw2.
I played the game since 2005. I made so many friends that I still play with today. At the same time, I played CS 1.6. A really pleasant mix. My favorite time was the Rift, people rushing all over Tyria. The first obsidian armor...But the best thing about the game were the new, still unknown farming spots. Unfortunately, they were always fixed quickly... but just being one of the first to discover it and getting rich was great. I played it 2 years ago and only this game gives me the mysticism and the feeling of being a child... I miss those times so much. Shit growing up.
I used to love playing as a fast casting mesmer in PvP, but all my other skills would be the second class. It would confuse other players when my Me/Mo was healing people so fast and I couldn't be interrupted. This game has such a special place in my heart.
The PVP in this game was amazing, I was trash at it, but getting a great team in Random Arenas, or my occasional attempts in trying to get into the HoH or GvGs were all so memorable.
A relative of mine introduced me to the first game when I was a tad bit too young to fully understand what was going on in it (especially as I didn't understand English yet). He would end up passing away around the time of GW2's release, making my connection with that game a bit more personal than most other games I play. I bought a copy of GW1, but I have yet to sit down and play through it all.
I play Gw1 since 2006 with Factions and i still play this game today. I also loved the Green Hills of Ascalon so much. Im just running around and Farm Materials Lately and Sell them or Craft Elite Gears for my other Characters. I still dont have all titles max out but im still working on that but i give myself time and dont rush.
I played Guild wars 1 first back in high school, like...back in 2008-ish? But I had a hard time sticking with it. After playing guild wars 2 for years I finally went back with a friend I made through it and we played through the Prophecies campaign together. With a greater understanding of the lore and the significance of all these events in 200 years it just stuck with me how much of a gem I had missed out on for the likes of WoW. It was and still is a remarkable game. Everytime I hear a gw1 music track in 2 it makes me pause and just think back.
My wife and I are gw2 veterans thanks to our son introducing us. He was a gw1 veteran but we didn't play it. We tried playing and I play 1 occasionally but haven't gotten far
I played GW1 in middle school along side Final Fantasy 11. Recently I bought it on steam and I’ve been reexpeeiancing ever it’s been great even though I don’t have friends anymore.
I started when Nightfall came out and I simply love this game. Bought all the expacs and even though I had next to no clue how to play properly, it was AMAZING
I played gw1 for 10 years, then gw2 for 10 years and I still check vlox's falls to try and get in to a soosc group. I was in a guild called okii and we literally did every speed clear in the game and I can say without a doubt it is by far the most fun online game I ever played.
I played gw1 since nightfall went out, and played gw2 since ! But I came back to gw1 and I was surprise by the number of people still active ! I’m doing a re-run of profecy, faction, nightfall and GWEN with my brother we are taking our time and enjoying the game :)
I loved this game and tune in now and then again, but on its peak time PvP was awesome! Kurzick and Luxon fighting over borders and even moving borders was so awesome. And the guilds "ruling" over some cities was awesome and chilling.
I wish they would release another expansion for gw1 and bring people back I hated gw2 it was nothing compared to gw1 I started playing when I was like 12 and ran a very successful guild at 13-16 it didn't get real success till about a year in like we controlled the main town in factions for 18 months straight I made that guild just because I wanted to make my own cape
Around 9:54 you ask what happened to lay on hands, I believe you might be remembering the healing prayers monk elite skill 'healing hands' as that was a pretty popular w/mo paladin esque build in pvp and pve before any of the expansions came out. I hope you have fun each time you come back to the game (:
GW1 was just pure memories for me. I remember my first time playing it was with my cousin at a lan shop back early into its release (I'm talking couldn't respec early) and odds were that each time we went back our character was just gone, but we still got to have a ton of fun with pre-searing and early searing until a few years later when I was able to get my own laptop and we got to play further. I don't think we ever beat any of the campaigns, but we got to almost the very end of nightfall. I miss those days of wondering the countryside with Gwen playing the flute as a bit of support.
I see you choose the best armor for your thumbnail. This is good. Over the last year I've replayed through all 3.5 campaigns, one night a week, with a friend of mine. The changes they made to the game to make this possible, and just keeping the servers up at all after so long, it's beyond amazing.
Ahhh, coming up with your own builds was so fun in PvP. Random Arenas was my favourite 'cause when your team pops off, you get moved to team arenas! I think my biggest streak was around 21 wins as a Life Bonder Monk :) Then we ran into mass disenchantment and that was that!
Gw1 is such a good game. I remember the release of Nightfall with the new class the Dervish. Everyone wanted the Elite skill "Avatar of ....." Each castle had his own Avatar. I was in a group with 5 Dervishes and we got mauled by Bathazar. Eventually we got it, that was such a great moment. Gw2 is great but all the meta is the same.. Auto attack the gigantic world bosses and receive loot.
Fail the mechanic or one healer dies? Restart the whole fight. I enjoy GW2, but it bothers me so much that there are barely moments where we can clutch instance content in general.
Guild Wars 1 and Dragon Age Origins are the reason why I like tactic RPGs, there's just a joy of creating a successful party that overcome a challenge, not to mention the story as another bonus. A thing I think is funny is that your PC in GW1 fits more the "Commander" role than the GW2's PC, by giving your party orders, placing then in tactical places to ambush the npc or get some advantage points, etc... is just funny when you think about. I luv this game ❤️
Preordered the GW1 Collectors Edition as a high school graduating teenager back in 2005 after a year of playing the betas. Always saddened me how overlooked GW1 was back then. Always happy to see people discover what it excels at. The first year of the game before the Heroes system was like nothing else, the community was absolutely thriving and the way the game did 8-man content was simply incredible.
GW1 absolutely would’ve been what I played over WoW had I known it existed before GW2 was announced. And it’s criminal at how few people know and play GW1.
I started this year playing Gw1 because I wanted to know that hype of that game with the Story. But now I'm so in it, that I play less Gw2... Gw1 is soooo beautiful and addictive ❤
It's the builds brother. The endless creativity you can have to complete tasks is what is truly creative and amazing. The story is great, the game looks absolutely amazing for the time period, but man... the creativity you can have is just absolutely amazing.
My brother and I, who's been playing gw2 nearly since launch, just started gw1 yesterday. He played a lot when we were younger, and currently we are having a bunch of fun
Henchman was the thing that made me love that game. I like to progress and do things at my pace... Was the only "mmrpg" that i played for years and i bough it twice. Btw... pvp was so mutch fun.
As someone who missed Guild Wars 1 and started with 2, discovering this was really an adventure. Clearly you don't need nostalgia and the 2005 graphics hold up thanks to their style.
I only played it after playing GW2, I wanted to get the rewards for Hall of the Monuments only... but it was a mindblowing experience, seeing so many features this game already had implemented that were so new to the genre.
GW 1 was my first MMO because it was free, had so much fun in it. Have startet playing it again, because i want things from the Halls of monuments to my gw 2 account (messed up merging my GW 1 and GW 2 account, so had to start over).
This game scratches that itch when I want to theory craft. GW2 does have some of it, but it's all about tweaking all your traits and gear just to barely make a build work. Cool, but not nearly as fun as mixing and matching proffessions. Combining traits that work with other skills or using weapons that change how your skills interact. That level of freedom and possibilities is unmatched in any game. still my favourite game of all time. just jumped back in for some solid gaming to help weather the stresses in life. hope GW3 integrates elements from GW1 into it
I wish I could remember anything about my account in order to get it recovered haha. I had sooooo many minipets and rare gear. It did make me try GW2 though, and while it's not the same, it does get pretty damn close. The New Years PvP event was always such a blast too.
Same boat, no way would my parents allow me to play WoW because of the subscription. GW1 was home, and in that home I grinded the UW so much! Anyways off to redownload the game again!
In the same genre of "Oldschool MMORPG", i'd heavily recommend Dofus, coming from all the way back in 2004, for pretty much the exact same reasons this video has put up for Guild Wars 1: Immense world and lore to discover, adventuring with friends, and overcoming challenges. Both Guild Wars 1 and Dofus excell at this very thing, with the only major differences being that Dofus is subcription based, and that Dofus is a Turn based Tactical RPG.
The "MMO" thing is pretty funny for GW1, because even Colin said I think last year during their extra life streams, where he always shares these golden stories of the company and GW1/2, that GW1 was never an MMO and was more of a CO-RPG/co-op RPG because it was instanced as well. But during publishing, or whenever in that process, the game got labeled as MMO and even tho they explained it was... not and MMO, the physical copies were already out and "shipped" to retailers and it was easier for them to just say "yeah.. it's an MMO" rather than trying to change it anymore :D Even they could not understand why it was marked as MMO later on, they just went with it.
It was just the perfect combination of features and mechanics in a game of it’s time. Still shines super strongly but man it was something so special back then
Oh how time flys .. 20 years next year ... This may very well be nostalgia speaking but considering its age GWs graphic really stood the test of time. Truely something magical. Odd thing .. as time progresses GW2 looks visually more and more like Guild Wars 1 to me & thats gets me to want to play it more. 😅
I guess most of the kids ended with GW because they weren't allowed an WoW account... same with me :D I LOVED the way to make money in GW through rushes. I vividly remember the Droknar rush route when I think back to GW and think "Man, I loved this so much!" Even if it's not worth anything today I sometimes log on just to test new rush builds.
The thing I loved about Guild Wars 1 (and why I just couldn't ever get into Guild Wars 2) is the build variation. The game let's you choose any skills that you want. There is literally no skill in the game that you don't have access to, because you always have a secondary profession. And I really miss that in GW2. You just equip a weapon and the game chooses 5 of your skills for you. Guild Wars 1 is very strategic, because you have to be fully aware which one of your skills you'll be using next and in which order, constantly monitoring the field, your energy levels and your skill cooldowns. But in GW2, you just spam every button because it doesn't really matter. There is no energy - there is only cooldown. So once you've exhausted all of your 10 skills, you switch your weapon, so you get 5 new skills so you can spam them too, then you switch back to your first weapon and spam your original skills again now that the cooldown has worn off. I'm not saying that GW2 isn't strategic - especially at higher content. Guild Wars 1 was only truly supported with Expansions for 2 years (Game came out in 2005, final expansion was released in 2007), yet it still feels more complex than GW2 with its 10 years of content drops. Another thing I dislike about GW2 is the necessity to play with others. If you're playing at 5 in the morning on an empty map and a meta event comes up, you have literally no chance of defeating the boss, since 200 people have to bash on it for 15 minutes straight to get him down. But you didn't have that in GW1. The game was built so you could play every part of it solo if you wanted to.
Great game to this day, worth doing for the story alone if you're a GW2 fan. And you can solo just about everything if you're worried about needing other players, and while it still has a player base. Given it's age you don't have that same need to have a party for everything like you did long ago. With hero's filling the role that players would.
I will tell you why I still play it. It's a solid game that is very well built. The skill builds are tight and they work well. In 2024 you can either play this game solo or with others and the solo play can be a good challenge at parts. for a challenge you can vanquish areas in hard mode which is fun. There are so many different things that are all driven toward game progress. Questing, Missions(sort of like raids in a way), Exploration, skill farming, achieving titles, working on your Hall of Monuments (Trophy hall) This game is excellent. On top of that the two main expansions (Nightfall and Factions) allow you to start in their territories if you would like and you can eventually max out your levels and then head over to another expansion or Prophecies which is the core game. The game is versatile and has many different choices for where you want to go. The game is also pay once play forever. No monthly fees. Additionally, unlike other mmos in towns you can see and team up or trade with other players. Outside of towns you are in your own instance with only your party and when you leave that area everything spawns back when you return there. That being said if you kill something in your instance it remains dead until you leave the area, which is what allows you to be able to completely vanquish areas until they are free of all foes. Grinding for things in the late game pays off. You can find very amazing and unique skills off bosses you kill, You can earn the materials to craft very incredible armor sets which seem to be never ending. You can enhance your armor and weapons to be as tweaked and powerful as possible. You can tame animals, and there is a place where you can store them and switch between them. Essentially you can collect your animals if you are a ranger and store them. I haven't even gotten into the PVP side of things. Some people love PVP I have never been a PVP lover. and that goes for all games, not just this one. Anyway that's why I love GW. GW2 is nothing close to what Guild Wars is. I recommend GW to anyone who has plays GW2 and hasn't tried GW1 yet. Go play it and see for your self. Give it an honest chance and you will grow to love it.
This was my first online game way back in the early 2000's. Bought it when factions was just coming out. Thinking about going back to it and starting a new character. Fondest memory? I got deployed the same year i got factions. But by the time i had to leave the game i had already made a florishing guild. My officers i met along the way during my playthrough and we were extremely good friends online and crushed through alot of the content before forming the guild. I made one of them leader so they could run it while i was gone. When i came back, i messaged the leader outside of the game to let him know i was back home. He told me the guild went through some drama and disbanded. By that time i wasn't too depressed since i had left years ago but i was kinda sad my original band of officers had parted ways. When i got back into the game i noticed the guild was still there.. and my officers were still there and all online. Waiting for me in the guild hall was most of the guild standing in formation welcoming me back. I never told them this but i balled out crying in my little gaming chair when i saw that. Won't get that kind of love in any other community.
Still play GW1 today - it is perfect. Halloween, Christmas, and Dragon Festival have massive player participation. Festival drops & Nicholas the Traveler still bring out the farmers Heroes Ascent, Fort Aspenwood, and Jade Query still have regular players (Anet/NCsoft cancelled a buncha buncha bots a few years back). You have hard core PVE'ers that play by variations of Iron Man rules. I'm a PVE'er and farmer and play frequently.
Having played both GW1 and GW2 pretty extensively since the release of both, and all it's expansions, there really is something special about GW1 that GW2 just never managed to recapture. For me it's something about the world design itself. There's a lot to be said about a freedom of an open world, but I really love the hub based, instanced level/mission structure that it absolutely nails. Also GW1 Jade Sea is absolutely gorgeous, one of my favourite locations from any MMORPG.
I kind of totally had the same experience of not being very popular freshmen year of high school meeting other nerdy kids (maybe even you? ha) helped a lot and was so much fun.
I picked up GW2 in the last 3 years or so, but I have never played GW1. I keep meaning to, but I haven’t. This is a great pull for me to finally do it.
My older brother use to play this game so much. He’d be sleeping on the keyboard. I remember one time we had to clean the basement and i think he accidentally dropped the pc tower and he went insane 😂😂. He also would buy up weapons on ebay. During those days you could use a program to trick ebay and paypal into getting things for free. I forget the program. But i played too but i was 6 or 7 years old at the time.
@@CaffeinatedDad yeah i would love to check out all those old pc games i use to play. Gaia online, club penguin, megaten imagine, grand chase, Dragon fable, flyff
I would love to go back and finish what I started with guild wars one but the game doesn't give you any direction on what your supposed to do after level 20. I got the expansions and only played them for a week before I gave up. the expansions are even more confusing as to where to go and what to do.
The way you could combine the classes, and the unique classes themselves... I loved this game back in the day. Those are also the reason i couldn't get into GW2. Althought they def have some fun mechanics like the skills depending on the equipped items, and changing your loaded weapons on the fly. But still, the class combinations is a great miss for me. Also there isnt a new version of the Dervish...
Despite the numerous merciless nerfings it suffered, specially each time an expansion came out, I still love GW1 and it has a level of freedom to make your build that GW2 lacks
Myself having only 6 accounts in GW1, around 11 toons on each account, all GWAMM, playing since forever. In fact my main account in GW2 is more than 7 years old and only the last 2 years i have played GW2 because it felt to me unplayable trash, compared to GW1. Of course i like GW2 now but still playing GW1, a bit rusty but still loving it. In 2025 GW1 will be 20 years old, waiting to see what Anet will do for the game :)
I'm still tinkering with skill combinations. Guild Wars is a tactical team game. You can't win a flower pot here by simply running into groups of enemies and hitting them. It's all about using your 8 out of 1,300 skills wisely. Yours and those of your companions. It's fun to create new builds and team builds. There is no other game like Guild Wars 1.
I think about replaying GW1 all the time. I remember when they added those NPC party members, I just came back to the game and didn’t know about them. Tried talking to one in a party I was in and the real people all laughed at me lol.
I, a GW2 vet, have just started my gw1 adventure and it's been amazing. There is nothing like GW1 out there.
Story is good too. Doing the gwamm title and 50/50 for GW2 is easy too, although being very grindy and not for everyone.
GW 1 has one of the best stories until today
It’s one of a kind : Althias ashes
same. GW2 drip feeding us content and making it more time-consuming grind than actually be fun has me checking out GW1.
Such a day to night shift. GW2 I can get by just spamming 1. GW1 has me paying attention, thinking things out. It's not as flashy, but far more engaging

They understood it though. The goal with GW2 was to make a generic MMO that could implement a cash shop smoothly. It's all about the gems.

I was doing exactly the same, just with a Ritu/Ranger build instead 😂

I really hope ArenaNet eventually releases a more true successor to GW1 than GW2.
All the original developers left long ago, sadly.
I miss those days of wondering the countryside with Gwen playing the flute as a bit of support.
if this gets a modern remaster, I'm buying it in a heartbeat.
It already had a graphical remaster update! Come back and join us!
Just pls no modern audience remaster 🙏🙏
Doesn't need it
I would rather see more expansions like a nightfall GW beyond
Unlikely but who know what direction ANet will go with GW3.
Used to play it back at release, and picked it up Yesterday again and I got hooked immediately was so much fun !
I see you choose the best armor for your thumbnail. This is good.
Over the last year I've replayed through all 3.5 campaigns, one night a week, with a friend of mine. The changes they made to the game to make this possible, and just keeping the servers up at all after so long, it's beyond amazing.
Still such a great game. I went back to it recently just to revisit the mechanics. The devs should seriously consider an expansion (imagine).
GW1 was the best. Fully agree with your video.
Started playing GW1 in beta. Used to take my computer to my friend’s house and we’d all run fissure of woe and underworld. Such great memories
I love to play gw1 every once in a while
Gw1 is such a good game.
Nightfall was so hype I remember thinking “this game can get even better???” I was hooked
I used to play GW1 as a normal RPG game and I really enjoyed it. :)
Best online rpg of all time in my opinion. There is no other game like Guild Wars.
Epic story arcs. I was never much good at the fighting, but I loved being part of those epic, far reaching stories.
I started this year playing Gw1 because I wanted to know that hype of that game with the Story.
But now I'm so in it, that I play less Gw2... Gw1 is soooo beautiful and addictive ❤
I haven't touched Guild Wars 1 in forever. BUT I HAVE THE URGE !!
Go for it! Its awesome and cozy. Best community ino!
He played a lot when we were younger, and currently we are having a bunch of fun
gw 1 complete collection is currently on a big sale! dont miss it out!!!
For me it is playing with the family once in awhile and going through the flameseeker campaign.
That level of freedom and possibilities is unmatched in any game. still my favourite game of all time. just jumped back in for some solid gaming to help weather the stresses in life. hope GW3 integrates elements from GW1 into it
I grabbed the whole collection for myself and my GF for $10 each last xmas. My 3rd account and her first, been a blast to go through it all again.
I played way back in the day, but got back into it a few years ago. I play a few months every year and enjoy it every time.
I played Factions so much. Got Guild Wars 2 when it came out, just didn't feel it..never got into it.
same here , never got into it sadly
Still shines super strongly but man it was something so special back then
Sigh can we make a petition, I want gw1 back like added on too or a new version ( same soundtrack ) ❤️😊
I started in Nightfall and it was my first serious mmo. All my friends were playing WoW.
I guess most of the kids ended with GW because they weren't allowed an WoW account... same with me :D
I LOVED the way to make money in GW through rushes. I vividly remember the Droknar rush route when I think back to GW and think "Man, I loved this so much!"
Even if it's not worth anything today I sometimes log on just to test new rush builds.
grinding, heroes as partners if you can't find a group, Hall of Monuments.
I still love this game. I like to stock up on critical role episodes then binge them in the background while I vanquish and go for titles
i remember being 10 or 12 years old playing this game this and RuneScape was my childhood
Ive kept gw1 downloaded on all of my pcs and future pcs. A game I will always go back to every few years no matter what
I'm still playing GW1. Not daily anymore, you know, work and personal stuff. But try to play every weekend as much as possible. Still love this game
I've just loaded up my old character after a 9 year gap! Looking to see if I can close our a few of those old titles that I missed!
Great review and plug for the game.
My question is, do you have any idea how many people still play the game? Is it common to see 100’s of people?
Back after 13 years....
Well explained. Thank you 😸😄🐕
I have been gaming since the mid 1980s, and Guild Wars 1 is by far the most nostalgic game of all for me. Nothing else comes even close.
Still play GW1 today - it is perfect.
Halloween, Christmas, and Dragon Festival have massive player participation.
Festival drops & Nicholas the Traveler still bring out the farmers
Heroes Ascent, Fort Aspenwood, and Jade Query still have regular players (Anet/NCsoft cancelled a buncha buncha bots a few years back).
Omg the nostalgia 😍 good ol' GW1
I picked up GW2 in the last 3 years or so, but I have never played GW1. I keep meaning to, but I haven’t. This is a great pull for me to finally do it.
I'd highly recommend it. I hate gw2 myself simply because of how good 1 was and 2 did nothing to follow in its footsteps.
The guildwars trilogy has a very special place in my heart. Now I wanna play them again!
jUST GOT MY ACCOUNT BACK YESTERDAY NOW LOOKING FOR GUILD AND RELEARNING AFTER 10 YEAR BREAK
Welcome back!
Guild wars 1 was outstanding. I maybe need to try to find my own credentials.
There are so many great memories of these games that I find it enjoyable to go back and play around with them even now
@@CaffeinatedDad yeah i would love to check out all those old pc games i use to play. Gaia online, club penguin, megaten imagine, grand chase, Dragon fable, flyff
I remember getting to Max level in presearing … so much fun, once upon a time I was once the legendary defender of Ascalon
My biggest gripe with GW1 is the outdated UI. Maybe lack of mounts. It's that good.
The name Alesia continues to inspire fear among players to this day...
I came back to GW1 after a decade off and I'm so happy to be back.
I would love to go back and finish what I started with guild wars one but the game doesn't give you any direction on what your supposed to do after level 20. I got the expansions and only played them for a week before I gave up. the expansions are even more confusing as to where to go and what to do.
great game, unique. never got in gw2
Dare I say it:
Best game I ever played.
Gw1 is what brought me in to online gaming I have 2 accounts I haven't playing years but I miss it I need to get a computer and hop back on
I bought this game when it first came out at walmart
Myself having only 6 accounts in GW1, around 11 toons on each account, all GWAMM, playing since forever. In fact my main account in GW2 is more than 7 years old and only the last 2 years i have played GW2 because it felt to me unplayable trash, compared to GW1. Of course i like GW2 now but still playing GW1, a bit rusty but still loving it. In 2025 GW1 will be 20 years old, waiting to see what Anet will do for the game :)
Bro we need to work on your warrior builds lol
I waited outside of gamestop for this game on release day and have over 3k hours in this game. I miss it
I'm still tinkering with skill combinations.
