1981 was the year I turned 20 and it was such a fun year. My dad and grandparents were still alive and we were all young and healthy. The holidays were especially fun.
It's wild to think those elderly women and men shopping in a modern mall were all born in the early 1900's and 19-teens, maybe even late 1800's some of them. And here they are seeing things like Atari's, digital watches, and early computer systems.
My friends and I give each other gifts from dollar stores. We dont have much money but we all enjoy opening gifts. My roommate and I have a 4 foot artificial tree. We have our decorations that we got from Dollar Tree a few years ago. On Xmas we have vegetarian spaghetti, garlic toast and vegetables. My roommate and I are vegetarians. We always have pumpkin pie. We invite some friends over and its lots of fun, playing Xmas music or watching some Xmas cartoons. I look forward to the holidays.
I remember gold triangle. Sorry it went out of business. Zayres was also a popular store in south Florida back then too. It ticked me off when Macy’s bought out Burdines. Americans had so much more leisure time and disposable income back then. This video shows how decimated our middle class had become because of monopolistic private equity firms.
Wow! So this was the adult world of American consumerism while I was over a week old 😂! Yup, I was born November 16th, 1981. To think that a few states away, just over a week away..... Britney Spears was about to be born.❤
My memories of that time are more vivid than those of 5 years ago. I'm 65 now and spent several years in Miami in the early 80's. Amazing what aging does to your noggin'.

My dad was the store Manager of Lindsley Lumber just west of the turnpike off tamiami trail during this time. I remember going to work with him as a boy and then going the new international mall after he got Off work on the weekends
Did you see those ancient cell phones in there? They had a steel cable attached to some sort of box contraption. Glad some genius knew to cut that cord.
🤣4 pieces of designer Bill Blass chocolates for 2 bucks. What a bargain. You can't buy one candy bar for that now. I always felt sorry for the pups and kittens in those mall pet store windows.

I got a hang nail that year. Not so fun.
Those days are long gone and they’re never coming back, unfortunately.

You don't have much money but yet you Splurge a $1.25 each for gifts?
@ytr3488 we have enough money for a few cheap gifts, otherwise we wouldnt get them! R u stupid!
@ytr3488 one gift for a grab bag!
$2 dollars for luxury chocolate in Miami 1981?!?! Damn a snicker bar is $3.29 at the convenience store today lol 😂
I wonder where many of these people shown in this video are today? Here it is 2024 and I'd rather prices and things be like they were in 1981.
Some are dead
Well half the human lifespan is less than it has been since this video was made, so at least half are 6' under.

Yep! And people had no cell phones, we used to play outside together. Times were good. 😊

@@ChatGPT1111 yeah you wouldn't want the cord to get caught around your neck by accident.
This was pre 'Florida Man' era; much safer and prosperous😂
Wasn't this mall in the C0cain Cowboys doc, with a shooting there?
@@honeybdream That was at Dadeland Mall.
