    A viewer generously offered some places to get glass pens. I have not tried any of these but a lot of people are having difficulty finding some.

    Wait...they come in different nib widths? How did I not know that? Your glass pen collection is beautiful and I love the way you have it displayed. I never thought of using shimmering inks with a glass pen but it makes total sense. That opens up a whole new world of ink for me, and bad news for my debit card :-)

      hahaha! I didn't know that before either. I've got a real doozy of an ink for my "crazy ink" video that is so weird but using a glass pen with it is so fun--it DOES open up a whole new world! Thank you so much Jackie!

    This was pure enjoyment. I'm here recovering again from back strain & I wasn't sure I could even watch anything today but your video even helped me relax which reduces the muscle spasms! I just love the ink candle I've not seen one of those!!!! Your glass pens are stunning! Also, I have the same size spice Bottles I need to use a few on my ink desk!!! Loved this video! Especially appreciated seeing your set up. I think the items on your desk that I was really to were the ink puddles and the basket with your notebooks inside. I just stand mine (I think 6 or seven) and whenever I remove one they all fall over! Haha! I’m sure if I lived in Japan I too would buy a few glass pens. Oh, I also love your use of spice bottles filled with water, capped, and on your desk ready for use. Genius! Enjoy your weekend!

      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahaha! I wondered if anyone would realize that they were standing by for use--which is REALLY geeky. But I tend to just doodle with my flex pens if the glass stuff is not all ready to go and very handy to do. I'm not much of a "swatcher" and this encourages me to do it more! I'm still a fountain pen geek first though. Thank you! Enjoy yours too!

    So cool! I love your setup and the mesmerising way you film inky shots. I'm way too clumsy to use glass pens, though - happy with my dip nibs. Now I'm wondering if I can use iridescent medium in ink. I use the metal powders on ink before it dries, as it's more controllable so you can do a splash of shine, rather than the whole thing. Loving your videos.

    • @InkyRocks
      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much. You are right, dip pens are good too! If you try using that metal powder, I would try it with a small amount in a sample vial or a puddle. And then only use your dip pen.

    I saw a glass nib pen at a thrift store once. I didn't buy it because I didn't know enough about glass pens. It's probably too late for me to enter your give away. I just love your videos. The way you film ink makes me stop breathing sometimes. When I find part one of this video, I'm going to share it on FaceBook, because I have nieces who bought glass pens when they went to Italy. I want them to see how you present them. My nieces are very talented and I like to think that I can show them something that they are already interested in, but might not have thought about in the same way.

You can get lovely inexpensive glass pens on several of the on-line fountain pen/stationery stores, on Etsy, Amazon, eBay etc I don't have any, but I have heard Italian glass pens are beautiful!

    Thanks for the vid! I was swatching some "new inks" in old pens as I watched.
    For the longest time, it looked like the glass stub nib in the thumbnail was some kind of jellyfish and I kept wondering it how it held the ink since I was thinking of a "bulbous" shape. XD
    Maybe getting shimmering ink is one step closer to the Inku Numa Darkside?
    Ended up getting Tono & Lims Flight of the Bumblebee from one of your videos. I'm a sucker for ink that shades to a near black/black and it turns out that black shimmer makes that same effect. The scent was a bonus, too. It actually reminds me of Taho, but with more punch. It's also great for getting rid of more chemical scents from standard inks. XD

    • @InkyRocks
      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    o.o the closing line XD ... So tempted... alas I know myself too well and I know that i'm going to burn out soon on the glass dip pens. Having said that, this was a very enjoyable video to watch and I can completely see why people would just take enjoyment out of doing ink swatches. The texture and feel of writing with a glass pen is quite different than the regular pens I'm used to. I write for fun (stories) and like buying colored pens... and I had wanted a glass pen of my own since my mom had one when I was a kid (the nib chipped and it stopped working but I do remember getting to use it a few times) so I spent the same amount of money on a glass pen set with multiple colored inks as i had spent on a new set of colored pens. XD They each have their place, the colored pens I don't feel scared will break if I want to put them in my bag to use at work or something, and the glass ones have just a super good feel to them. They live on my work table right now.
    Anyways XD... I think I'll end up looking more into Inku-Numa especially if it's as relaxing as this video has been, and this video has also been informative so thank you.

    Thanks for another interesting video. I have two Italian glass pens bought in Rome, (one made by a Florentine luxury stationery shop and the other manufactured by J. Herbin), but both have quite fine nibs and certainly I have never seen a stub glass pen. Like most westerners, I use my glass pens to test inks with the ease and convenience of water cleaning after a try out of an ink. I had no idea there was this cult of glass pens in Japan, but it does look fun. I can quite see how Japanese female fans of inks would use these fine instruments for writing journals or letters, but do Japanese men use them to any extent?

    • @InkyRocks
      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The stub glass pen is pretty new and is pretty much an outgrowth of the recent popularity of glass pens. The guy can't keep them in stock. Very few men use glass pens as very few men are in the Inku-Numa craze, though they may use fountain pens.

      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry, I had a J Herbin glass pen many years ago (that I destroyed trying to "smooth" it) and I can't remember how thin it was. My thinnest line from a glass nib is the Hario and it is equivalent to about an EF though the shape of the line is different. The opal glass pen is about a BB nib.

      I got them at stores here in Tokyo (Tokyu Hands and Okamotoya). I think your best bet is to check out the stores listed on Fudefan's blog on a regular basis. They may carry them (and sell out really fast).

      Thank you so much! I wish there was a place to buy these out side of Japan, but there really isn't. Almost all of the glass pen makers are hustling to keep up with demand here. The one on my thumbnail has a 4 month waiting list last I checked. But I'll keep an eye out and when one decides to ship international I'll post it. TAG stationery now ships international and that is where I got the chromatography butterflies and ink puddles.

      Thank you! Yes, getting stuff out of Japan is hard with some of these smaller businesses. One of my goals on the next Tokyo Pen Show is to ask each vendor how they can be contacted and wether or not they would ship overseas. Part of the problem is many Japanese really REALLY don't want to use English at all. It is a source of embarrassment. And they don't want to deal with the extra work of shipping overseas.

    What do glass pens typically go for and where can I find them? Any Japanese makers sell overseas? The link you have sent me to a glass pen costing $4,900. Surely thst is not typical pricing or are young Japanese women swimming in thst much money?? 😂

  • @aileensmith7716
    @aileensmith7716 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I absolutely cannot use glass dip nibs, I am so clumsy and kill them within a few days. I use an Itty Bitty Serendipity Mini which uses a Jowo nib and has a sealed section, instead, because it is much more robust than glass :p I always wondered why the manufacturers don't make the pens out of Temper Glass or safety glass?

    • @InkyRocks
      @InkyRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think most of them here in Japan are by glass blowers and are hand made--I'm not sure you can use safety glass etc like that. Probably the best bet for you is dip nibs. I have a 100 year old one that I just love. It is quick and easy to clean. Glass pens are just pretty hahaha!

    It's interesting that it's mostly women doing the swatching... but to be honest I prefer watching others do the swatching and then getting the ink to write. I've never felt a desire to do any swatches myself. I may like to get a crystral dip pen to use w/ shimmering inks especially if they have a broad italic version. I have never seen those single serve coffee? I mean they have like packets you pour into hot water... what is the real name or brand? I'll see if our local daiso has it?

    • @InkyRocks
      @InkyRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t really swatch either (that’s why I don’t show them in vids-it’s too tedious for me). I have an ink play book where I just dump in there and write what it is when I feel like it. Several companies make that kind of coffee. It isn’t instant, it’s definitely a pour over. Daiso in Hawaii had it.

    So, here's my idea: though I imagine there is a place for Tupperware and Nail Parties: Fountain Pen and Ink Parties should be a thing (and Zoomable, if need be), too.
    Are people doing this, yet?
    Everyone could bring their favorite thing; they could be themed or seasonal events (could you imagine a room filled with people turning lights on and off to experience ghost inks and secret messages?); everyone could bring a sample to share or something to raffle off for charities, and throughout the festivities, there could be mini sessions and games - guess which paper or ink this or that is - and of course a referee to step in should debates get heated. No, MY red ink is superior! LOL!
    I envision a room of stained fingered people quietly writing, sloshing ink, turning pages of various paper, whispering techniques or significant memories tied to all their favorite things... and snacks. LOL 😂
    But, more important: who do we get to clean everything up afterward???
    It seemed like such a good idea a minute ago. LOL!
    It is refreshing to learn more about life beyond western borders and thinking; I like to think it also is an opportunity that reminds: we are all part of the same tribe.
    I really like your videos 👍🏼🖋🎁 Congrats!

      Yes, but they don't have like EF, F, M etc but more like, "this writes like a F" or "writes a thicker line" when you are shopping (along with how many characters you can write and what it sounds like). They don't expect you to buy it without trying really. The stub is fairly new as an outgrowth of the Inku-Numa. You can follow the glass pen maker Toos on IG: @glass_studio_Toos as he makes the stub.
