- February 11, 202: Big House, The Pearl, and The Triumph of Winston Salem State. documentary will showcase the Rams' historic 31-1 season that culminated in the Rams claiming the 1967 NCAA Division II National Championship. Was televised on CBS Sports Network and I do not own the rights to the game.
My dad was on that team with Earl the Pearl.. thank you for this . Both my parents and grandmother went to Winston Salem Teachers college !! Thank you❤❤❤

I remember watching “The Pearl” at the Civic Center in Baltimore. I was also stationed with a fellow sailor who had played football at Winston Salem and was a friend of the Pearl.

Grew up as a Knicks fan. Incredible rivalry of Knicks/Bullets was amazing basketball. Almost mirror images of each other. Reed/Unseld, Barnett/Monroe, DeBusschere/Johnson, Bradley/Marin, Frazier/Loughery. Loved watching “The Pearl”. Marv Alberts game call of those games was memorable. Then the trade. The pundits predicted that Frazier and Monroe could never play together. They were big time wrong. They thrived, played together for 8 or 9 years and won a championship. I have heard Earl speak at functions and had a basketball card signed by him. A great player and a special man.
The bullets came up with Shake N Bake,Archie Clark, and Phil Chenier used to kill the knicks,those were great games,winner gets Boston,jo jo White,Hondo,Cowens,chaney,Nelson,too me,that was the best era,just great team basketball
Amazing. Big House went out of his way to recruit my dad. My dad was a standout in Philadelphia playing for Ben Franklin High School in 1961-1963. My father went to his grave regretting not playing for Big House. He went to Johnson C. Smith instead. Earl the Pearl and my father were competitors in high school.

Curley Neal, before he played for The Harlem Globetrotters, played for Johnson C. Smith. I heard that there was a huge rivalry between The Rams and The Golden Bulls.

In 1967 I was a white student in pharmacy school at UNC. My friends and I got a chance to go to Winston Salem twice to see the Rams play. Actually we went to see Earl. He was a icon at WSSU. I saw him do things with a basketball that were impossible. He would roll the ball down his back and use his butt to bounce a pass to a teammate for a layup. The basketball they played was fun. When I was in high school we would go over to Lenoir county and play black teams for practice. We did that illegally. We were not supposed to play black schools. The times were different. Some of these black players were my friends. I felt comfortable around them and that led me to associate with some black friends at UNC. so I felt comfortable at WSSU. Black culture was then polite and friendly to whites who were respectful to them. My heart goes out to those people who overcame the predigest in the communities to win the hearts of the citizens of North Carolina. What a year.
I grew up idolizing Earl big time! I liked Oscar a lot but the Pearl was my man! I worked on the spin move and got them down.

I'm from Evansville, Indiana, home of the the Evansville College Aces, four times winner of the tourney and back to back winners "65" and "66" (undefeated season) In the 8th grade at the time when elementary teams always received free passes to the Division II finals. We were always excited about the black players coming to town with the various teams. Many we had not heard of including Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. They played three games to win the tourney from Wednesday to Friday. I was able to attend the Wed. afternoon game Winston-Salem played. We were blow away. Keep in mind there was no ESPN. No highlights to see of a coming attraction. They cruised through the first two games but Monroe showed out in the Friday night championship game. We were going crazy. We had seen some good basketball and outstanding players at Evansville college( Larry Humes, 32 ppg, unstoppable around the basket) and Walt Frazier with Southern Illinois U, but "The Pearl" was magnificent. Never forget his dribbling out the clock. Would like to have film of the game. We were all mimicking his herkie jerk dribble and spin move the next day. In my opinion he revolutionized the game as much as anyone. I went to Jr. college in Indian River Florida and the city guys would come out to runs with us. There was a guy who looked like Earl and modeled his game after Earl you know like a Michael Jackson look alike. That year the 76ers came to the school to train for wo weeks . Remember we were sitting around talking to Archie Clark. We asked about guarding Earl Monroe he said you can't stop him just hope that he missed.

I grew up with my dad talking about Earl the Pearl! He was his favorite player growing up. My dad ended up playing basketball at UCONN in the 70’s. I hope I get to meet him one day and can personally tell him his impact on my dad who passed away some years back ❤️

What most people forget when when EARL was.traded to the Knicks New YORK went crazy I don't think any basketball can got any sleep the barber shops were buzzing basketball was back in a big way New York has never duplicated a trade like that to this day

it's interesting how some great players had to sacrifice some of their game for the betterment of the team. Monroe easily could have scored more...but sacrificed in New York for titles. I say that because lost in a lot of the nonsense GOAT talk...is what guys actually sacrificed to win.
Great video. I was only 10 when they won in 67. My school in W-S had only been partially integrated for two years but even I remember those times. Never saw the Pearl play back then but people in town back then talked about the Pearl like he was Black Jesus, like he was some kind of Demi-god. It’s great they had W-S native Chris Paul narrate this video. Great choice. Great video.
I loved Earl the Pearl. The story about his mom was incredible kudos to big house and team. I learned a lot from video.

I'm a little partial to the Black Magic documentary because we shot 450 hours of footage and narrowed it down to 4 hours. Maybe ESPN will release some of the other footage. History must b told and not go to waste
As a senior at JM Langston High School in Danville, VA. 45 miles from Winston-Salem, that championship CIAA tournament the Rams lost I saw in person with my "1967" high school basketball squad. A former basketball classmate by the name of Carl Hubbard guarded The Pearl that night and held him well below his 40 plus game point average, naw The Pearl wasn't sick , Carl just did his thing defensively, if you don't believe me ask The Pearl 🙂
Pearl has admitted they got beat. And every player can be slowed down. Carl deserves a lot of credit for that.
Every player gets slowed down and Pearl made no excuses. But if we say the same for MJ or LeBron, we would be called haters.
I went to St. Aug's. Every time I go to a CIAA basketball tourney. I'll visit the Ram's box because WSSU's cool and they serve good food too!

It took brave people to begin the breaking down of the color barrier on both sides. Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickie are two that come to mind. I wish I could have been one of them, I'm not sure, I've never been a courageous person, but we are all better because of what those few did. They had the courage to challenge the wrongs of society, God bless them.
Truly enjoyable. I strongly advise the viewing of this documentary by youngsters.

@@w1hines HBCU just don’t have the financial & faculties to attract top recruits, I don’t want get into the politics why, we both know it’s a bunch of corrupt HBCU wise, I think administrators looks @ HBCU as come up by taking money for selfish reasons instead putting the school & kids first just my opinion, hopefully with media attention things will change need to get younger people in vital positions concerning HBCU, and do better business deals when it comes to HBCU!

My Uncle John Wesley Michael play with The Pearl Monroe My Great Aunt and Aunt graduated from WSSU. He use to come to Lexington NC with my Uncle... Had a chance to meet him.
