UPDATE: He was released after 10 months for good behavior. During that time he studied business and became a manager at a pharmaceutical company and doing extremely well. He met with the judge again after his release and apparently they've stayed in contact. He also voluntarily enrolled in programs to help with his addiction and 5 years later he's very well off.
She was present when he was released after that jail term, and on at least one other subsequent significant occasion. This is a judge who cares, and who makes a difference

She had a job to do and addressing him that way showed respect without confusing the roles in their interaction. Despite that, she showed personal care and concern in the sweetest way while still keeping appropriate boundaries. Trust me… she handled this perfectly.

You know, I've watched this a couple of times and I've finally realized why it was so impactful to him. Someone acknowledged him and he was, for single moment, treated as a human being instead of being labelled as just another criminal. So many men have people who don't believe in them, but she did and it made all the difference.
It's also about realizing that at some point they were equal in going to the same school (I don't know about their personal environment) and realizing they took opposite paths. With different circumstances, he could have been the judge... That must hit you hard. I once was at a low point in my life and unemployed despite having been to a prestigious business school and was hit hard when a former classmate contacted me and he was the marketing director of a major company. 10 years earlier we started at the same point. That smacked me in the face hard. It's a kind of mirror effect.

Definitely was a point of reflection. In an instant reflection point he was faced with looking in the past and it was overwhelming. It’s safe to say we all have done things we aren’t proud of and when we reflect, it can be emotional even if you don’t let it out like he did, it’s tough.
What the judge says is so heartbreaking "I always wondered what happened to you. This is the nicest kid in middle school. He was the best kid in middle school, I used to play football with him." Imagine your childhood friend, who you would hang out with, who was the nicest person anyone knew. Moved away or just stopped coming to school with no explanation. Years, probably more than a decade or two have passed and your reunited like this. "I always wondered what happened to you." She never forgot him.

This is one of the most beautiful and authentic moments I’ve ever seen. She connected to the person she knew him to be rather than simply the convict standing in front of her, this did something for him that changed him forever. She humanized him and treated him as someone with worth while still holding accountable for his choices. I am so happy that he has turned his life around

He's reaction is heartbreaking 😔 When she asked him if he went to Nautilus middle school, he so quickly showed remorse and sorrow. But his smile for that split second had the look of that promising young man in the pictures they showed of him.
That's what i saw too! He was immediately reminded of happier times and you can tell they were good friends. Instantly brought back the little boy. Im glad he's doing better. And he the judge are still in contact!
Her good statement is what changed him. After serving his time, he and his family visited her to thank her for her words of encouragement. She even gave him a hug. He started over and became a successful business man.

You read that on a clickbait internet thingy. Unfortunately, it's hard to get out of the environment you've been living in for decades. He's been arrested twice in 2018, and again in 2023. Still, he seems to be a good soul gone wrong.
Hats off to the judge. It seems like it's only a little act for her, but what she did changed lives. It helped that man get back to his senses and live an honorable life, where he's able to contribute positively to his family members and community. Thank you very much, Ma'am.

I've seen this judge before on other shows. She is the nicest most caring judge that I have ever known. Just because some people have made bad mistakes in their lives does not make them bad people. She always treats them with dignity, kindness and respect. God love her for that. There needs to be more judges like her in this world. 💕

i come back often to this video. This is a rare moment, not often its captured on video that a person has the consequences of their choices so laid out in front of them and realizing what went wrong. Watching a lot of young guys, throwing their life for petty or serious crimes, all while never even showing regret. I am a law student right now who appears in court for my boss (the defence counsel representing) and I just witnessed a very similar moment in court where the judge said that he knew the accused from grade school - it was a heart breaking moment, everyone was hiding tears, but I truly wish the best for that individual so that he can turn his life around just like Mr. Booth here. This video has been one of my biggest inspirations behind wanting to become a judge. The impact of kindness when a person is at their lowest can work miracles in life. We need more of this in the justice system.

Dizzle its not her fault that the government decided to privatize prisons, it takes a long time to goto law school, pass the bar, be a lawyer long enough to become a judge that she was probably already on that career path before the prisons all became privatized, and without good people as judges the problem will just be worse, but you have preditemined her character and reason for career without 0 evidence

When the judge said “this was the nicest kid from middle school” and “he was best kid” from 1:48-1:54 That defendant remembered the judge from school and at that point he started feeling remorse for his actions and felt emotional seeing this judge.
This literally left me in tears how nice the judge were and what is heart breaking is that he realized how could he become and how his reality now is. The one who was playing with is now a respectful judge and he is a criminal.

Just goes to show how fragile the “nice” kids can be I am one myself but I soon realized that my nice nature alone can’t support me and that how easy it is to snap under the right pressure I don’t consider crime but several times a week I consider suicide just cuz of how ill prepared I was for a harsher workflow and inhuman/immoral work conditions society puts on us If I hadn’t taken initiative to toughen up and learn how the world actually works from a realistic point of view, I may not be the nice kid who understands how cruel the world can be, that I am today and instead the nice kid who is always reliable and does their work but will be stunted in personal growth and understanding that the world either shapes you or you shape it

When she asked him if he went to Nautilus middle school, he so quickly showed remorse and sorrow.
But his smile for that split second had the look of that promising young man in the pictures they showed of him.
That's what i saw too! He was immediately reminded of happier times and you can tell they were good friends. Instantly brought back the little boy. Im glad he's doing better. And he the judge are still in contact!
Her good statement is what changed him. After serving his time, he and his family visited her to thank her for her words of encouragement. She even gave him a hug. He started over and became a successful business man.

As far as I can read in several comments that actually happened.He turned to a wise lawful life pursuing a honest working career.
It hits different when the person judging you was once a friend. You realise that you were both on equal grounds at some point, one turned for the best and the other for the worse.
Makes you realize only one wrong turn can divide the road to greatness and one that leads to somber. Some identify the wrong turn early, and some realize it too late.
I think that hurts the most. Deep down that is what alot of us arw afriad of. Coming from the same shoes and playing on the same football field, same benches.

Agreed, she smiled to show him that she was being friendly and sincere. She didn't have to mention the past, since it seemed that he didn't recognize her. But she wanted to remind him, in the most positive way possible, considering their roles in society now.

But, life is somehow merciful. There are few people who believed I am kind and had faith that I'll change. And, I am proud and happy that I did. :))))

It's good to know that after a year he got out of prison and her words touched him so much he changed his life and ended up becoming a Top Dog in the pharmaceutical industry making plenty of money and traveling the world. They still remain friends to this day

You read that on a clickbait internet thingy. Unfortunately, it's hard to get out of the environment you've been living in for decades. He's been arrested twice in 2018, and again in 2023. Still, he seems to be a good soul gone wrong.

I've seen this judge before on other shows. She is the nicest most caring judge that I have ever known. Just because some people have made bad mistakes in their lives does not make them bad people. She always treats them with dignity, kindness and respect. God love her for that. There needs to be more judges like her in this world. 💕

He didn't realize the person he had become until that moment. This lady took him back to a simpler time when he was the nicest kid in school before life's bad influences changed him. Sometimes it takes just one person to remind you how much of a good person you actually are.

It really hit him all at once how far down he’s allowed himself to get. I hope this encounter with someone who still remembers the goodness in him gives him the will to turn his life around.

I love this judge, not just because of this clip but also because of other clips that has shown that she treats convicts like people.

i come back often to this video. This is a rare moment, not often its captured on video that a person has the consequences of their choices so laid out in front of them and realizing what went wrong. Watching a lot of young guys, throwing their life for petty or serious crimes, all while never even showing regret. This guy was giving the judge looks, waiting to be done with it, and then it hit him like a sack of bricks.

I am a law student right now who appears in court for my boss (the defence counsel representing) and I just witnessed a very similar moment in court where the judge said that he knew the accused from grade school - it was a heart breaking moment, everyone was hiding tears, but I truly wish the best for that individual so that he can turn his life around just like Mr. Booth here. This video has been one of my biggest inspirations behind wanting to become a judge. The impact of kindness when a person is at their lowest can work miracles in life. We need more of this in the justice system.
It was a brutal but impactful wake up call for him. He realized how much he messed up his life. I really hope he’s doing good now.

That defendant remembered the judge from school and at that point he started feeling remorse for his actions and felt emotional seeing this judge.
That moment his ferocity was gone, and he was awakened by the warmth and innocence of his earliest childhood...

I am one myself but I soon realized that my nice nature alone can’t support me and that how easy it is to snap under the right pressure
I don’t consider crime but several times a week I consider suicide just cuz of how ill prepared I was for a harsher workflow and inhuman/immoral work conditions society puts on us
If I hadn’t taken initiative to toughen up and learn how the world actually works from a realistic point of view, I may not be the nice kid who understands how cruel the world can be, that I am today and instead the nice kid who is always reliable and does their work but will be stunted in personal growth and understanding that the world either shapes you or you shape it
