Royal Enfield clutch drag issues put right.

  • A dragging clutch can feel well adjusted at the handlebar lever, but the pressure plate may not be lifting evenly and causing drag, as was the case here. Selective assembly with springs of various strengths and even slim washers used to pack one or two springs eventually gave a pretty even pressure plate lift, as discussed here. Grinding a small amount of material from the back of the clutch lever gave a little more ltver and cable movement, to also help with the clutch action.

    My HD 883 Sportster is 25 years old and is still on the original clutch.

    When I first saw the clutch of my 350 I realised that the BSA system is better, with six adjustable screws holding the pressure plate onto threaded studs in the hub. It’s part of the setting up process to individually tighten the screws and get the pressure plate running true. Here, on the Bullet you have to hope that the springs compress by the same amount. A good tip about getting more throw on the clutch lever, Paul.

    I drilled a wiring hole in the three clutch bolt heads so I could slack off the low lift side and secure the bolts with a wire. A combination of that and swapping the springs around achieved a similar result to your spacing washers.

    Paul you're a life saver. My 2002 bullet has has drag problems and iv messed about with the clutch for long enough. Already did the clutch lever mod which gives a bit more scope but never thought about springs giving different pressure on the plate.. Brilliant 🏁🏁🏁

    The original 4 plates tend to be distorted. The aftermarket 5-plate kits are a big improvement, never had isseus like that again. Nonetheless very interesting vid. Thanks!

      The plain plates will certainly distort very quickly with a dragging clutch and once they are distorted - for whatever reason - they are only fit for scrap. The plates all checked out ok in this low miles example, though.

    in the beginning of the video the very first time you pull the clutch i said different springs will fix that but that doesn't mean the springs were the actual cause, the different springs and added washers may just be compensating for another problem, it probably would do you good to test the springs you pulled to see if they are different rates...............

      They were a matching set of six, probably fitted at the factory ...

      @abruptlyblunt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      just because they came from the factory and look the same doesn't mean they are all matching , it would be nice to know if the cause was from some of the springs just being weaker or if there might be a design or manufacturing defect that you've just masked for now....@@paulhenshaw4514

    G'day Paul, my 500 Royal Enfield Bullet is a bugger too find neutral with the motor running, drops in when motors off, other that that the clutch is working fine, what do you suggest to make it find neutral all the time, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

      Hi Neil, that will definitely be clutch related, I would take a look and consider doing what I have done here. cheers, Paul.
