  • Hello friends! My name is Amber. Welcome to my fiber arts podcast. This is where I discuss my knitting, crochet, and spinning projects with any fellow fiber artists who are keen to listen. The handmade life is a wonderful life, isn't it?
    The fiber arts have been a part of my life in one form or another since I was a young girl. My grandmother taught me how to crochet (and knit, although that one didn't exactly stick at the time) when I was around the age of eight. Fortunately, I am blessed enough to even have a few of her handmade items that I have tucked away for safe keeping.
    My family and I live in the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania. We love the beautiful outdoors that surround us and spend a lot of time enjoying the landscape. However, I spend the majority of my free time with yarn and needles in hand. Knitting soothes my mind while at the same time feeding my need to create.
    Thanks so much for joining me for this episode. I feel so blessed to be able to share my love of knitting and crafting with you.

    Your Thrummed mittens are so snuggly looking, love the colors.
    I was so touched when you were talking about Molle. We also have a little doggie (Shiba Inu), named Kaiya, she turned 15 in October. We know that everyday with her is a blessing from God and we are thankful, she is slowing down and it's hard on our hearts.
    I love your Felix sweater, again, your colors are so pretty.

    Yes Amber I know exactly where you’re coming from… I don’t set goals, to me that is pressure I don’t need… but having said that I’ve been wanting to learn to spin for years, I have not one but two wheels…😂 and of course, a much abandoned derelict doll house… perhaps this will be the year of motivation…🤞 love your finishes, your little person cardigan is gorgeous…❤

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! So are you going to make this year the year of learning to spin? How did you acquire two wheels? Wow!

    • @SueB-x4v
      @SueB-x4v ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alovelyyarn it’s a bit of a tale…. I’d always wanted to spin but had neither the time nor the finances when my children were young… but one day I spotted my first wheel in an antique store, reasonably priced, so I bought it…. I didn’t know anything about wheels but it was a lovely piece of ‘ furniture’..!!! Many years later I found out it was a hand made wheel, by a local man, out of a rare Tasmanian timber known as Huon pine..( I live in Tasmania, Australia, a small island) the wheel is known as an Eyre wheel, after Cecil Eyre the maker… apparently it spins beautiful lace yarn…. not so good for a beginner spinner, so I then had the opportunity a few years ago to acquire an old Ashford …. hence two wheels, now I finally have time to devote to another new craft, so hopefully this will be the year…(before I am too old..!!!) I’m hoping to do a class in March… but have been looking for a good tutorial on TH-cam… could you recommend any….
      Thank you so much for your channel, you and your family are so lovely…and your interests are very similar to mine….❤️

    Always enjoy your videos ❤️ you mentioned seeing a journal spread of knit goals, I enjoy bullet journaling as a way to have everything in one place, so I keep a spread going to record down finished projects, I do really simple handrawn doodles of the item and then add any details I want, such as who it was made for, yarns used, etc... When it's full I just start a new spread. I find it so enjoyable to look back on as I often have forgotten about things I made and gifted. ☺️ I was thinking this year I might start taking instant poleroid photos of some to tuck in as well. Anyway, I like seeing what I've done rather than what I want to do which constantly changes. 😄

      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi AnnaMae! So I have seen similar bullet journals that you are describing, and I absolutely adore that idea! I am just terrible with executing it! Maybe I should aspire to do that though, because I do really enjoy journaling and it would be so nice to look back, as you said!

    Oh, that little cardigan looks so cute en the colour is perfect! I will become auntie again this month, so I will keep this pattern in mind for future knitting 😊. I did make a 'make 9' board this year because it helps me focus on what I really want to make. Otherwise I will start scrolling forever through pinterest and ravelry and doubt endlessly before I will cast on a new project 🤦. So this board gives me some sort of grip, but if I could also shuffle in an in-between project if I would want to 😁

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. I had to laugh about the scrolling. I do that sometimes which is why I really want to try to knit from patterns that I already own before buying new ones. I enjoyed seeing your knitted pieces. The sweaters are beautiful. I had never heard of thrummed mittens before watching your videos. Thank you for explaining the process of making them. We have extremely mild winters where I live. I knitted my first sweater in 2022, The Weekender. I wore it on our visit to the US in November/December, and it was very warm- so warm that I probably won’t be able to wear it here at home. I bought a lot of yarn on my ‘yarn crawl’ through NC and SC. I have plans to knit socks, a sweater vest, and a light cardigan, as well as the spa cloths I’m working on now. Hi Amber, I really enjoyed seeing all your knits💖🧶
    I am working on, actually nearly finished, a cardigan made out of a multi coloured Llama fleece.
    I started from scratch, sorted, washed, hand cared then spun the Llama fiber. It is so enjoyable to work with, and the smell is just addictive? Have you ever smelt a Llamas smell?
    Oh my goodness, it is so nice and comforting.
    I have seen other crafty people smell their sheep wool yarn in a somewhat addictive way, totally understand 😊.
    I have always loved Llama fiber, more than sheep fiber.
    My plan for this year is to spin up and use all my Alpaca stash after i have exhausted my Llama stash.
    Very addicted to that as well.

    • @alovelyyarn
      @alovelyyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! So that is a ton of work. I used to have alpacas and so I completely processed some of their fiber, but it was challenging since we have a well and I had to be careful not to run it dry. It takes so much water to clean it well. I have actually never worked with or smelled Llama fiber. I wonder if it's similar to alpaca?

    • @Snowcrystalsfalling
      @Snowcrystalsfalling ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alovelyyarn Do you miss having Alpacas?
      And do you like the end product once all the work of cleaning and spinning is done?
      It is alot of work , but satisfying.
      I understand how you have to be careful with water.
      Llama without the guard hair, as in super fine Llama, is just as soft as a low micron Alpaca fleece.

    Hi Amber. Yeah, no new year resolutions for me, either. I put Christmas things away and then, just start on or continue on what I feel like. I was just thinking today that I want to get back to spinning, I am in the mood for that. I finished one old fleece last year and set the wheel aside but, have another fleece only partially spun. I also pulled out my watercolor paints and palette to inspire me in that area. I also want to get my oils out, it has been much too long since I have painted. Of course, i continually have so many things I want to make in so many mediums, so I keep plugging along. I made a make nine board last year, that was not for me. I lost enthusiasm for a few things in the year and got inspired about other things. Your new mittens look luscious. That toddler sweater is so adorable.

I only ask because I made a tote bag once and it had a small piece of leather on it and when I washed it, the stain on the leather ran onto the fabric.
