    To put it simply, Kant's moral theory is "being duty-bound is the ultimate purpose of human action". Because you can only be sure about the present actions but you can't guarantee how the future turns out.
    So right means and not right ends should be our guidepost!

    That’s nice but what’s actually The Moral Law?

    • @amandeepbansel9087
      @amandeepbansel9087 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      According to Kant, the Moral Law would be the Categorical Imperative, which Kant says, is to "act on that maxim(moral principle) whereby you will that it become a universal law". For example you might rationalize that lying should be wrong in all situations, so your duty in regard to moral law would be not to lie in any situation.

    • @monk1808
      @monk1808 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      amandeep bansel the Categorical Imperative is when you universalize an action to see if it is moral or immoral, for example if you lie you are essentially saying it is acceptable for everyone to lie all the time, but if everyone lies no one can be trusted which becomes a problem therefore lying is immoral. Kant also thought of the Hypothetical Imperative which is when you act on a desire (ex. You want cake so you eat cake). The CI cannot be changed under any circumstance, so you can’t lie under any circumstance whatsoever, even if it would result in a good outcome.

    • @rajivmv314
      @rajivmv314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Medieval Academy I think that the act of being a priest results from desire to become priest. For Kant, such an act that is derived from a desire is known as hypothetical imperative. There is no aspect of morality in such actions. So the question of universalising doesn’t appear. Morality and his Kanye
      Principles apply only to acts of categorical imperative I.e those acts which are not born out of ones’s desires.

    Do you think "fetus does not have any rights because of the absence of Autonomy and rationality" is correct following Kantian ethics?

    • @fridolinmaier8806
      @fridolinmaier8806 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right (and legality), according to Kant, is not the same thing as morality. Whereas the laws of morality are self-imposed by beings capable of reason, laws in a judicial sense can be imposed and enforced by an external body, which should guarantee order within society. According to Kant murder merits the death penalty (the killing of a newborn by an unwed mother, he thought, should only be an exception because of the backward beliefs at the time) and parents have a duty to raise their child, which in turn means the right to be cared after for the fetus, newborn, child and teenager.

    Nicely done just one crucial point i think you portrayed wrongly. Kant‘s ethics don‘t care for the consequences of an action or desires of the actors. So it‘s not accurate to say "The student should ask himself if it‘s *desirable* to live in a world where everyone cheated on their tests".

    • @gloriarfrost
      @gloriarfrost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hi! This is Dr. Gloria Frost of the University of St. Thomas. In this short video animation, I am going to provide you with a very brief summary of Immanuel Kant’s ethical theory and its approach to evaluating actions.
      Kant’s theory is a deontological theory of ethics. The word “deon” means “duty” in Greek. Deontological theories judge actions to be right or wrong based on whether they conform with our duties.
      For Kant, what is most important in life is having a good will. A good will wills actions that conform to one’s duty solely because it is one’s duty to do so. This means that there are two elements to having a good will: First, the actions which are chosen by a person must be the right kind of actions. They are actions that conform to the duties which are set by the moral law. Second, a person must choose the right action solely because it is the right thing to do. This is to say that he or she must have the right motive. The person with a good will does not do the right actions because he or she fears punishment or hopes for a reward. He or she does the right thing just because it is the right thing to do.
      Kant came up with two different tests for how we can tell whether a given action is in accord with duty or fits with the moral law. His test called the “categorical imperative” states: “I should never act except in such a way that I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law.” Kant says that we need to ask ourselves whether we could will to live in a world where every other person acted according to the principle we are about to act on. For instance, when a student is considering cheating on an important test because he didn’t study, he should ask himself would I want to live in a world where everyone, everywhere always cheated when they were taking an exam that they didn’t prepare for? It seems that this would be an undesirable world. For example, grades would not be able to be trusted and academic honors would be meaningless. Since universalizing the maxim or principle that one should cheat when one is unprepared leads to difficulties, we can know that acting on this principle violates the moral law and one’s duty.
      Kant believed that in addition to this first test, there was another way to test whether a given action is in accord with or a violation of our moral duty. Kant formulates this test as follows: “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means.” In Kant’s view human beings have infinite intrinsic value because we are rational beings. Each person is a being which is capable of formulating their own purposes and goals. When we act towards persons we need to remember that each person has hopes, dreams, goals, plans, and desires just like we do. We cannot reduce other people to mere objects for fulfilling our own plans. Any act that involves using another person or even oneself as a means, without also respecting the person as an end, counts as an act which violates the moral law and one’s duty.
      So, in conclusion, if we want to know whether Kant would think a certain action is a morally good action, there are two important distinctions we need to keep in mind. First, we must consider the action itself and determine whether or not it fits with the duty all of us have to follow the moral law. We can use the two tests we learned about regarding the universability of maxims and treating humanity as an end to know whether a given act lines up with the moral law and duty. Second, we must consider the agent’s motive. For Kant, the only actions that have true moral worth are those which are done from duty or because they are right. Actions done for some ulterior motive such as pleasure or fear of punishment do not have true moral worth according to Kant.

      No, he was an absolutist. Relativists say everything is relative to the situation, there are no intrinsically right or wrong acts. And absolutists say morality is not about ends, but duty, law and obedience. Kant represents the latter.

    Kant Ethics states we see what we get. However this theory is futile with people such as Berkeley, and Russel who create counter examples to disprove direct realism. Berkeley create 'Bend straw' example and Russel created 'Table' example. The straw in water is seen as bend, through our eyes yet is straight concluding that what we see isnt what we get and that factors including glass, and light can change what we see.
