  • A brief look at how a PTO winch works. Yes the tree strap is actually a tow strap, the butt of that tree is massive and my tree straps didn't fit it:)

got the same JDM hj61 with pto for last 10 years and it's fantastic. now I have it spooled with 40m of 12mm synthetic rope and I strongly recommend that upgrade to anyone. one word of caution with PTO, if you are alone, for no matter what do not leave the cabin when winching because if you get tangled or injure yourself, slip or what ever, that winch will never stop until truck runs out of diesel....

Good job. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Great demonstration of the winch and a few pro tips, exactly what I was after.

They are great, I've never had an engine issue either - but I have had a solenoid stick on a winch and that isnt nice.

I love the Thomas PTO winch on my 40.. has done some serious pulling (dead pull of a 60series up about a significant grade).. so far I haven't ended up in a position where the engine wont run and I need a winch.... maybe I need to wheel harder.. :)
    Another good vid!

I have a HJ61 just like that including the same color interior and I love the 12-HT motor with the 5 speed H55f tanny. The truck shown and mine version are from Japan. If you notice the glove box the winch instruction are there but few can read them outside of Japan which is a big hint.

Do these have 5 gears winching in (= pulling cable onto the drum) and 1 gear winching out?
    Cheers

I just bought a fj62 with a pto winch but it came without a cable. Does anyone know which rope is good to use?

hi... i have the 87 fj60 wagon same as yours with the pto. mine has done 122,000 kms and is absolutely original including the pto winch. its a truck that doesn't see a lot of k's, and i keep it garaged, serviced and well kept. i used it to put some trees down and rip out the roots which the winch did well... however i then realized by the sounds it had been awhile since the winch fluids were checked as it sounded dry. no damage done but not wanting to repeat until i top it up,.. question.. what type or grades of oil/fluid is best for the winch?

hmm, im not sure what they call for the fluid in that one - im sure a gear oil would be fin 80w90

That's a Toyota factory winch, they are available as an accessory in certain markets, not North America

Never , ever, run the cable around a tree and hook to itself. Strap or chain

Hydraulic is better. Try driving a gin truck all day with three dirty ptos on it one wrong move and you bind the browning box or leave the the bastard in gear and birds nest the cable or worse not to mention how your leg feels at the end of the day Yep hydro is the only way
