I definitely used to do that "pretending to be a mod" thing as a kid. I was on a horse/pony breeding forum game (not an MLP thing but I do happen to know the site got shut down a few years after I left because it was straight up stealing art from another similar site) where I got into all kinds of cringey mischief that I mostly look back on very fondly and affectionately. My personal favorite was that all the mods had these weird signatures where they'd say things like "my mod voice is dark blue and sparkly and reminds you of nighttime in a forest" or something along those lines. Weird edgy poetic stuff, all of the time. Anyways I once changed my signature to "my mod voice is nonexistent, because I am not a mod" as a joke, and I got banned for 24 hours for "impersonating a mod." It still makes me laugh to think back on.

I had a somewhat similar experience. I remember wanting to make an UTAU of my own but I didn't have a mic, so I wanted to make a "fully artificial" voicebank, just like Defoko since she was my favorite. My plan was to also use a TTS voice, but then I read somewhere that doing this without permission (from whoever owned the rights to the TTS software) was against the ToS, and I was very afraid of breaking rules back then so I just gave up before even starting. If only lil me knew how to edit waveforms, then I could've created something like Adachi Rei way before she existed.

I was constantly on G+ from the ages of 9 to 11. As a teen I used to literally get cold chills remembering my childhood digital footprint on Google+. 😂 I was even a massive alicorn hater and turned my back on the mlp community after a 30yr guy argued with me because I only referred to them as "pegacorns". As an adult now, I'm actually sad that I can't go back and see what 9 year old me was up to. I was constantly arguing and finding myself in a web of drama (and thinking back now I think I almost got groomed by my 18yr 'best friend' so that's a yikes). Glad it's gone honestly.

I remember being obsessed with the movie Zootopia when it first came out, and one of the first communities I joined on G+ was a pretty big Zootopia fan club. We had major beef with another Zootopia fan club and were always competing with them to see which club could get more members and possibly even be recognized by Disney as "official."
Also, while I was active I assumed the other members were around my age (13-14), but in hindsight it's kinda obvious some of them were adult furries. No one acted really weird or creepy to me but it was wild to realize I was lowkey surrounded by them and didn't have a single clue lol

An interaction I remember very fondly happened when I was posting on the Transformice forum when I was like 8. I saw many people having these little signatures with pictures and stuff, but I didn't really know how to do that, so I just wrote [Username] von Ice after every message I wrote. (I was a Frozen fan.) Then one day some random user got prissy about it for some reason and called my signature stupid, but then another user came and told him off with "this is a kid in a kid's game forum having fun, shut the fuck up".

During an actually sorta recent phase where I was super hyperfixating on a certain ship as well as discovering my sexuality (I was a sheltered Christian girl sooo I was kinda a late bloomer about that stuff) I wrote a huge one shot collection of smut fics that ended up getting way more popular than I was prepared for and I get at least one notification on it a day 😅 I'm kinda embarrassed about it, but since it's so popular and I'm still actively writing on that account, I can't just delete it. I've made my peace with it tho, lol

i deadass wrote multiple "books" (they were probably like 10 pages each) in Google Docs set in a world very vaguely based on a mobile game i was obsessed with at the time. the characters were all friends from the forum who filled out little forms. it was about a group of hackers trying to hack the digital space (i guess??) and a group of heros trying to stop them by infiltrating their base, alongside other shenanigans. this included secret moles gathering intel, reconnaissance missions, and a fencing showdown that left the first book ON A CLIFFHANGER.
i was a tween at the time and it actually received positive reception on the forum. at some point in my early teens i deleted the docs out of embarrassment and now they're lost media. worst decision i ever made

I literally had the same ambitions when I was 13 years old. We had an end of year project (we could pick any topic of our choice) and I was so obsessed with Porter Robinson's Shelter (and other fandom AMVs) and decided to make my own animated short film. I spent a year sketching "concept art" and used flashcards for "storyboards" but ultimately I was lowkey copying the short and I had no idea what I was doing. So 2 days before the presentation for this final project, having nothing presentable I just scrapt everything and grinded making as many random animation clips as possible (now looking at them they're as bad as you would think when having no animation experience and a time crunch). I compiled these animations, slapped some electronic vibe music, and hoped for the best. I was put last to present but it actually turned out well and my classmates and parents were pretty impressed and proud? Like when I was walking down my friends gave me the biggest embrace and my parents afterwards kept showing off those animations to everybody in any occasion. I look back at that fondly and ay I currently am an animation student who makes short films heh it comes full circle
Weird coincidence that you put out this video just after I spent four hours trying to guess the password to my Deviantart account from when I was 13. I desperately want to delete it, but the tragedy is I forgot the email and the password, so I’m basically fucked unless I guess the password by sheer luck. I get you, not only could I be a jerk due to my mood swings as a kid, I could argue with people for believing in evolution (I was raised by Jehova's Witnesses so I was just spitting out what my parents thought). And as you can imagine, I was homophobic. Not sure if I left any comment back then about it though, I did discover I was lesbian somewhere around when Doki Doki Literature Club was recent. I didn't have an account to comment before 2016.

the boundless confidence of a 13 year old on an anonymous forum. i understand. i spoke just like this. im reminded of the time i had an absolute Breakdown over equestria girls cause i was so upset the ponies were becoming human dbghsdhj if i can find my internet monologue about it i may reply here. i am also in constant mourning over my childhood webkinz forum, but i do have a bajillion screenshots i took at the time backed up.
are you talking about webkinz insider? that was my number one forum as a kid too. i wrote so many awful original stories on there that i typed straight into the forum instead of saving elsewhere that are now lost to time
This fondly reminds me of something that I did as a kid that I want to share. As a kid, I had a ~5 year long continuous role play session with two of my friends using our toy dragons and dragons we made ourselves(from cloth) as characters. The amount of lore we developed was insane. There were clans, warrior cat style names, relationships, family trees, wars, story arcs, the works. Sometimes we would cry when acting out emotional or death scenes. Later as teens, we wanted to turn this story into one crazy webcomic broken up into several volumes that cover each arc. Only to realize that our lore was…kind of a mess, lol. So I made a shared google docs folder where we attempted to rewrite it while still keeping the heart of the original. And just like with these dragon mmo’s, we never finished, or made any substantial progress lol. But it’s still something I think back on very fondly. I even still have some of our old handmade dragon ocs. I’m an adult now, but I still keep that story alive in my own ways. I still enjoy drawing and occasionally redesign some of our characters. And when I’m with new friends or coworkers on slow days, I’ll sometimes tell stories of our dragon adventures with them, and they get a kick out of it. After I ran out of time one day telling it to one of my coworkers, the very next day, the first thing she asked me was to tell her how it ended. I still think it would be cool to make an RPG Maker game out of it or something.
Thanks for reading, if you made it this far. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that loving the “cringe”(in a childlike wonder sort of way) part of yourself is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself. Making silly edgy dragon ocs with emo hair isn’t cringe, it’s having fun. If any teens are reading this, don’t do what I did, which was being ashamed of the things I loved. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re being childish. Be cringe, be free.
Reading this made me smile. My friends and I used to roleplay a lot, but we never had consistent characters or lore or anything. We’d basically just make up a new scenario each time we hung out. It was loads of fun!

I personally believe our past cringe shouldn't be shamed, but embraced. It's a living proof of your own personal growth and it also reminds you of times that might be positively special for you (though not always the case)
Sadly, I didn't think this way about 3 years ago and I deleted ALL my posts from Undertale Amino from 2016 to 2018, a decision I still regret :(
i feel you! theres been so many times when i delete something in a moment of cringe, and then a few months, maybe years later i get upset i can't laugh at how silly i used to be.
Listen during my MLP phase I also unironically said "everypony" (I think even sometimes in a non-MLP context?) but I wasn't 13, I was in my 20s. Hyperfixed brains are funny things. In some cases it just doesn't occur to you that your world will stop revolving around this one day.
When I was 12 I tried to make a script for my own version of Cars 2. This was in 2007 so Cars had only been around for a year at that point. I never got very far and I clearly didn’t know what an actual film script was. I also tried to make storyboards, but that was also given up quickly because I didn’t know or was too scared to try and draw cars.
I remember the plot I had in my head, which was under the presumption that Paul Newman would live past 2008 to reprise his role as Doc Hudson. He technically did thanks to archival recordings, but I had no control over that. Anyways, my 11-12 year old child plot was a very girl-power-esque plot and weirdness. Chick Hicks teams up with Frank and they kidnap Sally and basically hold her hostage while McQueen, Doc, and Mater go to rescue her. They meet a guy at the dump that basically acts as that place’s guardian. I remembered I named him Trevor Rodriguez, had a speech impediment where he couldn’t say things with a “v” or “r” without his engine uncontrollably revving. He helps him out because he had his own lost love named Vanessa. Chick tells McQueen to get him the Dinoco sponsorship, give up racing, and trade places at being on the Brave Little Toaster-esque chopping block. McQueen agrees, Doc, Mater, and Sally return to Radiator Springs and they get the entire town (of twelve) to do another rescue mission of “rush him and grab him.” Somehow it goes wrong because of betrayal from the Delinquent Road Hazards where one of them named Wingo is a cousin of Chick because… Chicken Wing…. So Sally is forced into being one of the Dinoco showgirls, Doc his trainer, and I don’t remember everyone else. Either way, Chick was about to have Lightning killed a la that Worthless scene from the Brave Little Toaster, but before Lightning could get crushed Sally pushes him out of the way. They all get out of there with Lightning and friends taking her back to Radiator Springs. She recovers because temporary Disney Death, but is kidnapped again by Chick and the DRH via the Dinoco helicopter (somehow it can hold six cars?). Lightning and Trevor try to catch and rescue her but the helicopter is too far gone. Trevor keeps moving along because I was obsessed with Mulan at the time and imagined Trevor using Mushu’s lines. Time skip later and McQueen is up against a mysterious new racer at the Piston Cup and the reveal being that the racer was Sally. They reunite, make up, and become a racing couple or something along those lines.
Again, I was an 11-12 year old child who really didn’t like boys excepts for the ones in fiction and was believing princess hate once I started middle school. Then in fall 2008 I learned an actual Cars 2 was being made and I was happy and later discarded the attempted scripts I wrote.
In 2011, I finally made a fanfiction.net account and started writing a fic based on Cars 2. This was also very much my 16-year-old self wanting make Sally a more prominent character than she was in the sequel. The main idea being she was the younger sister of the American spy that got captured and killed and that she was also The King/Strip Weathers’ daughter… because blue color. Chick Hicks goes to the villains in Cars 2 for help in making Lightning lose races by kidnapping Sally. They tell him no because that kind of thing is beneath them until Professor Z takes a closer look at her photo and agrees feeling as though Sally might be related to the American spy they killed. Mater gives Sally his black box because it has recordings of his adventures with the spies from the year previously. The villains do the kidnapping job by having decorators visit Radiator Springs to help with creating a girls-only party (I was 16 and still not entirely fond of boys) and then have a tow truck named Ivan and two lemons basically check every woman with a tattoo there until they found Sally and knock her out. Chick taunts Lightning, Lightning freaks out and tells Mater to call the spies for help. Meanwhile professor Z cuts a piece of Sally’s metal with the plan to check it for dna to see if he’s correct. Sally manages to escape from her cell by using the dustiness to blind the camera and parked beneath its position. A lemon comes in to check and Sally takes opportunity to escape. Mater and the spies make it to the building to rescue her and split up. They rescue her, but lose the bad guys and return the race.
I had other ideas for that fic, but I only wrote up to five chapters and they were deleted from fanfiction.net because one chapter had a copyrighted song. They chapters would still be on my old computer… but it’s been forever. I would’ve wanted to make that fic a trilogy.
The last Cars fic I ever tried to write was when I was 21 in 2017. I was not a child, but I was filled with hype about Cars 3 and made a Cars 2 dark au based on this one Disney anthology fic where the villains won. Specifically, the one based on Frollo. Long story short, Lightning blows up because Sarge never switched his fuel last minute, Mater and everyone in the pit crew blew up because he didn’t know the bomb was on him, and Finn and Holley got crushed to death by the clock gears. In my dark AU fic, the main villain in Cars 2 caught a glimpse of Sally, thought she was too attractive to be killed and had her lured out before Mater could show up to warn about a bomb that was actually on him. He has her kidnapped, chained, and locked in a soundproof basement in his home… and you can put the pieces together.
I actually kind of forgot about this fic until October 2023 when someone used my dark unfinished one shot as inspiration for one of the prompt for k*nktober. I actually had my jaw dropped because I didn’t think anyone remembered or that it would inspire someone. Since then, it’s just been living rent free and built upon the tragedy of Sally as a… nonconsenting pet via discord.
So yeah, that’s my cars fanfiction stories. I love Cars and the fandom is niche enough that I don’t have to worry about terrible people. It also helps that all the characters are adults. Children exist in this world, but they are not the focus or have a prominence. So… yay.
My 2013 cringe forum story is when me and my friends made a Hetalia roleplaying thread on Transformice forums and it got locked when we started doing NSFW roleplays. people in the general chat thread often complained about how the Hetalia thread was always at the top of the thread list because of how ridiculously spammy it was (half the time we weren't even talking about the anime and I never even watched the anime LMAO). once the thread was locked, a new rule about no roleplaying threads was added to the forum and the mods cracked down on making sure people stayed on topic in threads.
After that, we made our own Transformice tribe called VODKAAA (Hetalia reference) and used the private tribe board to bitch about other people in the public forum.
oh man the Transformice community was so wack sometimes lol. I never really used the actual forum but I think I spent more time on the Cafe than I did playing the actual game, so there was little 10 year old me pretending to be be older than I really was arguing with full grown adults about things I knew nothing about

My gosh I shiver at my middle hetalia phase, There was this quiz app I loved at the time with different sections for topics, like artists or science topics etc. and every topic had a message board feature and I posted pictures of hetalia characters on the countries of the world topic, kill me now I thought that show was so cool and wanted to show everyone

I was a super active member of the GREY'S ANATOMY FAN FORUMS when I was eleven to thirteen and my god, I don't even know if I'd want to see the cringe I posted. I was VERY MUCH the youngest active user and posts I remember, the adult fans were VERY kind and patient with me. Thank god. My presence was horrific but I was lucky there were like, kind adults who read my FIFTH GRADE GREYS ANATOMY FAN FICTION and gave like, honest and kind grammar/story critiques. My memories of that era are good because the people were so kind but whenever I remember something I posted I take psychic damage.
omg i felt this video in my core. i too had delusions of grandeur as a kid 😭 i was maybe 11-12 and thought i was gonna draw a whole manga series and become a famous artist. i literally sketched one page and got bored and abandoned the whole project forever. i also thought i was this amazing anime artist and as soon as my mom allowed me to make a deviantart account i started putting art up there and listing it as prints to sell. never sold anything lmao
When I was like 18, a friend and I decided to try to create our own game studio, and we posted ads on some random proboards we were in asking people to join. There were the usual cringy idealistic points: looking for people with much higher skillsets than we could offer in return, specifying that no one would be paid, assuring that we'd work together to make the best game ever... yeah.
And then we got relentlessly mocked for it lmao

Oh gosh i totally had so many “projects” like this as a kid too, the main one i remember being basically a crash bandicoot clone 3D platformer and i had binders of notes and sketches for it. i remember your video about the dragon MMO reddit post where you said these sorts of passion projects that never end up happening are a genuine form of art, and i agree. i wish i could be as earnest and confident about my ideas now as when i was like, 12 years old lol!

Funnily enough my formative "cringe teenager on the forums" period was on Flight Rising, so it was pretty amusing to see you mention it. I was 15-16 at the time and joined a roleplay that ended up spanning over 200 pages, and I'm still really good friends with (and also dated for a while) the person hosting it. No regrets at all because I really treasure my friend and I'm glad we met and got close like we did, but man I have a hard time reading those posts without clicking away. The OOC thread we had was even worse but my friend deleted it after a few years (I think particularly because it was so cringe-inducing to read). I also had a period of time where I was overly invested in drama (yes, FR-related drama) and had to input my opinion on everything, which naturally lead to me being flamed more than once because I was a dumb teenager. SO glad I learnt my lesson then and moved on lmao.
Lol the alicorn hate reminds me of how Homestuck fans were about blood colors and fan trolls. I gave my troll oc seafoam green blood and someone gave me sh*t for it being "too neon" or whatever. Like sir we're all just making Microsoft paint drawings of fictional characters. No need to be rude.

i remember that when i was in 5th grade i was obsessed with the pokemon smoochum for no goddamn reason and i wanted to write/draw a manga spin off based on them, i remember i started it on the back of one of my notebooks, i write like 3 or 4 chapters; my plan was to send it to nintendo so that they can hire me to design pokemons 😂 i already saw myself traveling to japan and being nintendo's youngest employee 😂😂😂

when the internet was newer and i was like 9, i told an older person my full address on a sailor moon forum and i think about it all the time.
this is so embarrassing to admit but I was apart of a roblox hamilton theater group where we would "perform" the entire musical for an audience of like 5 other people and all you would do is spam lyrics. i remember i was arguing with a mod and then i got removed from my role of "eliza" and i was so devastated and i was blocked from coming back to the group too. i remember i would join back on my other account and just cry and then troll people. i was like 11 or 12 during this time and i felt like such an outcast and rebel LMAO
Damn, your 100% dragon roblox story just reminded me of when I was in sixth grade and had this huge ambitious project for a minecraft server that would be like an mmo where people could pick a faction, and then they'd gain access to that faction city, all the factions would be based off the elements and the cities would reflect this (The air faction city would be floating on a bunch of clouds, the earth city would on a mountain, the fire city inside a volcano, etc.) and the factions would have elected leaders and would declare wars on one another with siege events. It was SO ambitious, way too ambitious, I had absolutely zero experience and there was no way that was ever getting made, but damn if the idea didnt grab me. I even drew concept art of the different cities. Childhood man.

I tried making a horror map in Minecraft with zero knowledge of how those work so I had no mods or anything and did it in PE. I did actually get incredibly far into making it and figured out how to "code" things using command blocks and Redstone. I also did this for some sort of community map. I got really far into both of those, it's actually pretty incredible. If only I had that energy in figuring out how to make an actual functioning game now.

I remember when I was like 12, I had an idea for an FPS game that was basically a total ripoff of Half-Life 1, the story and setting were pretty much identical. I remember making two pieces of really crappy "concept art". I was totally convinced that I was gonna make that idea into a real game and that it was going to be a massive hit and the next indie sensation!
Then I realized that I had no damn clue how to make a game, so I abandoned that idea pretty quickly...
This wasn't even the first time I had one of these grand ideas for games that I would tell all of my friends at school about that never turned into anything because I was a stupid kid that didn't know how to make a game, so your "Roblox Dragon MMO idea" story definitely feels familiar to me.

As a tween I was a member of an Invader Zim fan forum with a site-wide project to animate one of the unfinished episodes. I desperately wanted to be part of the art crew and/or a moderator. Therefore I did the logical thing and made a 9-minute-long animation using MS Paint and Windows Movie Maker. It gets worse; this video also included my OC (voiced by yours truly) singing a cover of 'To Build A Home' by The Cinematic Orchestra, aka THE stereotypical 2010's sad indie song to set an inspirational Facebook video to.
Point being, Izzy, I feel your pain acutely.

I used to be a part of this MLP forum when I was like 12-13ish and got banned for "spam". They had a really dumb rule that you had to make every one of your posts a specific minimum amount of characters, so I just started ending all my shorter posts with keysmashing to get around it. The mod who banned me knew I was a kid and had me banned until my next birthday (since the forum required you put in your birth date).
I was banned like a week after my birthday. So I was effectively banned for a year because of a really poorly implemented spam rule.
when I was 13, I had a livejournal that I was utterly convinced would become really popular and have tons of people commenting and chatting in my comments, and every once in a while, i go back and read it to humble myself
I used to roleplay/troll as a Bush supporter on GNN and Aversion from like 99-02. Im not necessarily happy those sites are gone, as much as i am relieved.

When I was like 10 I used to go on the MovieStarPlanet forums all the time. I convinced myself that I was super popular and everyone liked me, to the point where I came up with names for my fanbase and haters. Threads along the lines of "your birthday decides what [blank] you are" were super popular back then so I remember making one for my ocs, most of which I made up on the spot because I didn't have 12 ocs, with no further elaboration. Some people played along but everyone made it clear they had no idea what I was talking about
I forgot how on some forums, moderators would scold you for using more than like 3 emoji's per post.

It's always so cute looking back at old posts. I keep my ancient deviantart account for this very reason. Everyone was so cringy but kids should be allowed to dream big and try and fail at things in a safe way. Plus, sometimes I too need to look back whenever I need a good humbling.

So i would email the creator explaining “i think i would be a good fit as a moderator, considering how awful the site is without them” 😭 safe to say i never got a reply back and forgot about it until now, thanks izzy
