  • A visualisation of every ranking and point scored in the 66th Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, which took place on Saturday 14th May 2022 in Turin, Italy.
    Working through pretty tough hangovers, I’ve visualised these in the best way that I could think to do - taking some inspiration from the @eurovisionario Twitter feed. The results are presented ascending order of total points. It couldn’t have been done without some expert data scraping by my friend, Danielle Kelly. Thank you!
    You’ll see that 6 countries’ rankings are missing. During the final broadcast, the EBU released a statement that said that during the second semi-final show on 11 May 2022, six national juries were found to have irregular voting patterns. As a result, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and San Marino have no detailed ranking information, although I have animated the rankings where they were deemed to have given points (for example, 1 point equals a ranking of 10). The six countries were given substitute aggregated jury results for the second semi-final and the grand final based on countries with similar voting patterns, as determined by the pots that the countries were put into for the semi-final allocation draw in January. Three juries’ results were announced by the Executive Supervisor of the Contest, Martin Österdahl.
    The run-up to the Contest was mainly dominated by Ukraine being the runaway favourites. Kalush Orchestra had actually finished second in Vidbir 2022, the Ukrainian selection competition. The winner, Alina Pash was excluded from representing Ukraine because falsified travel records suggested she had travelled to Crimea or Russia, which was against Vidbir rules. Kalush Orchestra took up the mantel of representing Ukraine, having come second in Vidbir and receiving the highest public vote (49.7%, compared to Pash’s 25.1%).
    The season had started with Italy and ‘Brividi’ being seen as likely winners by many fans and their Spotify streaming statistics seemed to support the idea. Optimism was high also in the United Kingdom for the first time in many years and internally selected ‘Space Man’ by Essex born Sam Ryder reached second in the odds as the final approached.
    A rejuvenated Spanish selection process called ‘Benidorm Fest’ had a controversial ending, with the winner ‘SloMo’ by Chanel receiving only 3.97% of the public vote, 13.8% of the demoscopic jury but got enough from the juries to get to Turin. RTVE acknowledged the disappointment fans felt and pledged to improve Benidorm Fest.
    Kalush Orchestra made the Contest having received special dispensation from restrictions on travel following the Russian invasion of the country in February (Russia were banned from Eurovision shortly after).
    On the night, remarkably for British fans, the UK topped the jury vote, with another pre-Contest favourite, Sweden coming second. Spain came third and Ukraine 4th. Portugal’s wonderful ‘Saudade, saudade’ provided them with a top 5 finish from the juries. Both Spain and the UK received 8 twelve points.
    The televote result was once again the story of the night though. Although it was expected to be large, a lot of pre-Contest discussion focussed on whether the juries would give Ukraine enough for to achieve victory. Ukraine’s televote dropped only 29 points from the maximum possible, accruing 439 points - the highest televote score ever. If the juries had not given Ukraine anything, it would have still finished 3rd, one point above Sweden.
    Spain and the UK are celebrating their best result since 1995 and 1998 respectively, with both sets of fans eagerly anticipating continued success - unlike last year’s top performers France and Switzerland who had a dismal night. France finished one from the bottom with 17 points, whilst Switzerland, many of whom didn’t see qualifying for the final received 78 points from the juries, but nothing from the public vote. We know how that feels here in the UK!
    Enjoy!

    Very well done in terms of the data and animation department. This has made reading the details of the all the results much easier. Great job on this one. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. UK FINALLY GOT A HELLAVA DECENT RESULT!! WOHOOOOOO!!
    Here's hoping we keep it up.
    On another note, I personally found Spain overrated prior to the contest, but when I saw it on the night, I actually GOT the fan hype. She was amazing!
    It is odd about the whole jury votes being changed by the EBU due to "irregularities". But I think with them not giving out much details about this does seem rather sus. Maybe they think we won't understand?
    Anyhoot, looking forward to next year now, wherever it'll be held lol

    I just noticed something. The televote, while just as lopsided (well maybe slightly worse considering Ukraine's allocation), was even harsher this year compared to last year. The bottom 8 countries all received 10 points or less. Sure 2021 had 4 countries with nul points, but at least it jumped up pretty quickly after the bottom 5 or 6. We were pretty close to having a record 8 countries with nul points in the televote, and that would have pissed A LOT of people off.
    At this rate, we're going to have a contest where 10 countries got points at all.

    • @eurodara
      @eurodara 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There is a trend really, that the top countries take almost all points and there is little left to give to others. That means there are clear favourites. You either stand out enough to get points or you are left out, there is no middle ground.

    And yet, as I'm sure it was for you on Saturday, seeing Sam just slip into second was oh so bittersweet!

    This is a great way to show the results! It solves the problem of the announcers taking too much time announcing the 12 points. (I'm looking at you Carola!) And it would allow songs to be longer than 3 minutes. Although, the points would have to be presented either in random order or in the order they were presented because it would be kind of obvious if they did it how you did it. I would submit it to the BBC should they be the ones to host. My only questions is how are they going to cram the contestants and see their humiliated faces when they just hear a buzzer when they get nul points?
    I'm so happy for the UK & Spain do so well this year! The UK was my personal winner and I was so happy to see him win the Jury vote!
    Honestly, I would totally support your submission of this concept to the BBC and the EBU!

    • @thereorderboard
      @thereorderboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I didn't really post this as a viable alternative to the actual scoreboard - more a full data dump and visualisation. This could be a nice companion to the televised results though via social media I guess - a lot of the casual audience wouldn't understand what was going on in this concept I don't think.

    There is some funny trivia coming out of it.
    Like how Spain was voted from every country in televoting except Italy. I know Italy's voting is always, always so random but for some reason they are the only ones not liking Chanel.
    At the same time all the televoters from South Europe voted for Italy, but almost all the countries of the North (outside Germany) didn't vote for them. Seems like the Italian sound is really popular in the south, but the North Europeans don't feel anything over it. On the other side all the countries voted for the UK in the televoting, except the 5 ex-yugoslav countries which i find so random and funny.
    Moldova was so close for a perfect televote score. The only televoting countries who didn't vote for them gave Moldova their 11th place.

      So every country ranks every song 1 to 25, the top ten gets points...so if their ranking is higher than 10 it gets converted to points...10th place = 1 point, 9th place = 2 points etc.

    I think you have made a mistake.
    In jury voting Greece came 6th and Italy 7th.
    Both of them had 158 points, but Greece got 6 times 12 points from juries and Italy 1 or 2 times 12 points from juries. So, Greece is 6th.

    • @thereorderboard
      @thereorderboard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thanks for pointing it out. I applied the correct code to order results in the overall table, but forgot to apply it to specifically reorder the jury and televote points with a separate criteria (for tie breaks). The challenge of adding something in late! So they are mistakenly reordered by the televote criteria in that table (with the criteria being: how many countries voted for the song, then the count back of 12, 10, 8 etc.) - that's why Italy appears above Greece - Italy didn't get any 12's in the televote, but many more countries voted for them (only 9 countries gave points to Greece in the televote, but they did get one 12).

      @@thereorderboard I know that there is a tendency of underrating Greece or other countries in ESC and overrating Italy or some other countries. I know there is a tendecy like that in every field. But sometimes it is ethical and honest to respect everyone equally.
      Do not change that. It was not an order from my side. It was just an honest observation. I just observed that and took a minute to say so.
      Not a problem for me although I am Greek. Classification in eurovision is not of importance as it is a political game, but sometimes just to keep the types 😉😉Greetings!
