- John Swinfield reports from the dilapidated site of the former Brooklands racing circuit - thought to be the first purpose-built banked motor race circuit in the world - where a group of volunteers called the Brooklands Society is trying to preserve the track after it's having fallen into disuse after the second world war.
What was the track like back in its heyday, and what was it like to race on it? Veteran racers Kaye Don and Sydney "Sammy" Davis take a spin around the remaining sections of the track in a 1936 Bugatti, and recall their competition days when they hared around the circuit on Sunbeams at speeds of up to 150 mph.

What a fantastic little film, really enjoyed it.
It's an awesomely atmospheric place, even with most of it gone. Well worth a visit. You really don't see how steep that banking is unless you walk up it. Am currently building a car that takes it's name from there.

No cookie cutter, pancake flat, middle of the desert street circuit will ever come close to capturing the magic that somewhere like Brooklands did.

I have never been to brooklands but it’s one place that’s on my bucket list
Well worth a visit, the museum sheds are marvelous. I rode my classic Norton 99SS on the test hill and a small section of the track including a section of the Member's Banking and the start finish straight. An experience I'll never forget.

@@simonlunt353 It was.Norton Owner's Club day, beautiful weather and a lovely selection of machines from the veteran and vintage to 'modern'. Mine is in the middle at 1956. It was lovely to hear over the PA 'And the last run of the day will be the lady with the red hair.' I had three runs and was so tempted to open the throttle out of the Members Banking and see how far the track went 😊

A relatively short lived but fascinating period in the history of British motor racing. It is rather a shame though that in England we don't seem to value the important heritage sites like Brooklands. There is a circuit near Paris that is considered to be the French counterpart of the Brooklands circuit. It is well preserved including it's banked corners and is still in use for vintage racing.
The site would probably be well preserved today if it hadn't been turned into one big aircraft factory!
@@Ibirdball Possibly but I'm not sure. Differential settlement between the concrete slabs the circuit was built out of had mad it incredibly bumpy according to contemporary accounts and it was already being said that it was unsuitable for high speed racing. Perhaps the concrete track might have been replaced with tarmac but we're not a country that looks after heritage sites well. I was surprised how modern most of the buildings covering the old track are. Still, a sad indictment of a lack of foresight.

I can't imagine how people could let great circuits like this die. The banked Monza track, I guess, is preserved better. I really miss the original Hockenheim with its long straights that have been converted to a forest, I've heard. What sort of a strange world is this! Good we still have the Nordschelife in working condition.
People should say "so forth" more often.
Wayne Carini would like this, it's history and he lives in the states on the New England area, he on the show "Chasing Classic Cars" Wayne has a brush mustache. Lol
