I believe those people who explode in 3050 are actually in mini-mechs called elementals. You can see their shoulder mounted rocket pods.

If you're really interested in the Mechwarrior series, the easiest is to play Mechcommander 1+2 & Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.
In MC you've got a squad of Mechwarriors. You've got several pilots as well as way to many Battlemechs which you actually can salvage off of the battlefield.
In Mechwarrior you, (like in the first SNES game) sit inside of your own costumized Battlemech (First-person view), but since it's controlled with mouse + keyboard it's pretty nice to handle.
I feel like i do have to mention Mechwarrior Online, a online (duh) 12v12 game. Sadly it isn't as polished as the old Mechwarrior games since the developer sadly isn't good^^ I've done my fair share of games (~2k hours playtime, which is a big thing since my attention span is really short) and you've gotta be good at video games to really have fun with the game since it is very hard to play.
The learning curve is also very high in the beginning and you learn more in steps than in a line. From time to time something clicks and your performance skyrockets.^^
Anyway: The Mechcommander games count to the most fun games I've ever played and i can only encourage you to try them if you like strategic games.

Really liked the first Mechwarrior game on SNES for its atmosphere. Back then mech stuff wasn't widely available like nowadays. For many mech fans this was the only first person mech game they could get.

The first SNES Mechwarrior game had a late game mission I couldn't beat, at all. It was protecting a base all on its lonesome with hordes of enemies converging on it. Bad guys could win by blowing you up, blowing it up, or gaining access to the base (standing on top of it and taking a lift down). That was as far as I ever made it.

I had to load up on short-range homing missiles and just fire those while running in terror. Couldn't beat it any other way.

      There's an easy INVINCIBILITY code.
Any time during a battle, pause the game, and hit ALLY ALLY ALLY, and then
      unpause the game.

Yeah, any mech enthusiast will enjoy this game. You either know that world first hand or you're on the outside looking in. Being really into Mecha Anime and models or other mech themed games ain't it. The table top and the sims, Piloting and as you said, customizing, that is the thing.

Never played the SNES version, but my friend had the MechWarrior DOS game back in the early 90's. I never figured out how to beat it (I guess it's beatable without ever doing a mission), but I still had a blast doing missions, recruiting people, and upgrading my mechs. At least, it was fun at the time. I recently tried it out again on DOSBox for nostalgia sake. Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up.

I rented the FPS game from Blockbuster when I was in kindergarten and I very clearly remember having pretty close to zero idea what I was doing but I loved the music and aesthetic.
For the 5 days I had it I pretty much just jetpacked around and shot missiles until I died.
I vaguely remember buying stuff for the mech hoping it would make things easier, but the more I changed things the more confused I got about how to control it. 😂

    • @kayarelanah
      @kayarelanah 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You've gotta think of how different the 'Mechs are in comparison.
In no way a Battlemech will start flying around like a jet or start holding a weapon. Weapons are mounted onto the 'Mech and the 'Mech is a massive 20-100 ton heavy unit (and one feels that).
And well, in Gundam & co. they're flying around using pistols like humans with jetpacks.^^
The oldest (official) Novel is from, I think, 1986 and called Decision at Thunder Rift and the oldest Macross show is from 1982, so it could well be that it's inspired but it's just as likely that some guy just started doing that.
Besides that, 'Mechs aren't THAT innovative. It's simply a humanized tank.

The first Mechwarrior on SNES is a minor favorite of mine, though that's partly because I used to watch my dad play it as a kid. I actually found the combat and controls to be pretty easy to get into, and I think it's amazing what they managed to pull off given the SNES limitations. I only wish they would've found a way to make the terrain more dynamic, maybe by using sprite objects to represent walls and buildings. What would have made it REALLY cool though, is if they used the SuperFX chip for it. That could've been a system seller.

That Mechwarrior game with the isometric view and co-op play is more playable in co-op than you might think. You just need someone who understands what their role is, and one person is going to have to be the captain. I never got the urge to spike controllers playing this co-op.

+Jonathan Hughes If you can, check out the MechWarrior games on PC. 3 is a pain in the rear to get to run on any modern system, but 2 & 4 are not a problem. Beware that running MechWarrior 2 in Dosbox does require a beefy machine.
Then there's MechCommander 1 & 2, and they are very good. And finally, a new game is coming out next year, made by one of the original creators of Battletech.
Oh, and unless you have a high tolerance for late 80's PC RPGs and their clunky interfaces, stay away from the two CRPGs.

Common mistake, but in this context understandable: The PnP RPG in the BattleTech universe is named MechWarrior, so it's no wonder that the computer games are often liked back to that, and not the older BattleTech borad game. And that's tragic; I really love the board game :-)

Played a lot of Battletech and Mechwarrior games on PC, and the first Mechwarrior game on the SNES is just a bit too ambitious for that system. Never tried 3050, but after this video, I'll likely skip that over and possibly try out Battletech on Genesis. It's a series you'd really like to work on the SNES because the lore of the series is very rich, but they needed a very well made game built from scratch to pull it off with any kind of bravado, and it doesn't sound like anyone had the time/money/patience/confidence to pull that off.

Eh, the SNES controller really should lend itself brilliantly to a first person MechWarrior game imo: Move forward/back and turn left/right on d-pad, strafe left/right with L/R, cannon with Y, jump with B, cycle weapons with X, target mode with A, toggle radar view on/off with Select, enter pause menu with the start button--or something like that.
That could and should have felt great to control on SNES, kinda like an old school console fps game, if they'd actually bothered to use it.
Also, it's abit disappointing how basic the in-game stuff looks here when a game like Street Racer shows very clearly the SNES can handle a fully rotating/scaling/translating Mode 7 track plus a background with multiple layers of parallax, as well as showing a bunch of sprites moving around oncreen too: th-cam.com/video/zturPhgEaVo/w-d-xo.html
Really, a first person MechWarrior game on SNES could have been brilliant in the right hands.

MechWarrior 3050 is a run and gun ? Even the first map you have to be strategic , which by the way is best to figure your own plan of attack rather than listen to the mission plan on that one.
While the first map is fairly generous with ammo and coolant ... after that you have to start making every shot count and get the most out of your coolants , making the fore thought strategy count just as much as the real time combat skills ( the Dance of Death with enemy Mechs)

    • @Mk101T
      @Mk101T 3 ปีที่แล้ว

If you treat it like a run and gun , it is impossible.
It takes a few trial and error so you can figure out how to be strategic with your ammo and coolant.
Hence making every shot count and getting the most out of your coolant which means a lot of back tracking to find those items you bypassed when you didn't need them.
But even spending all the time to figure it out and finally beat it (SNES) It felt like it did not have enough content.
So if the Genesis vs did not have at least 1 more map , that feeling would probably be worse with it , albeit I guess the initial frustration would be less.
It's definitely a game worth playing over again though , once you forgot the strategies ;)

I still play this. Piloting Mechs has as much to do with first person shooting as riding a bike does with walking up steps. The controls are good for a mech, which is like a tank and drives like a riding lawn mower not a car. Take a look at Steel Battalion, this is a type of vehicle simulation. Battle tech 3050 you mentioned is a pretty horrible game. Nearly unplayable. Play Mechwarrior 4 then take a second look at this maybe. Mechwarrior is a separate thing from other tabletop and Videogames. It's like paint ball or WW2 reenactments; it's a lifestyle. If you like this sort of thing this is a really great 8/10 game. Especially for this hardware. For me this is closer to gold, not trash. The Battetech 3050 games are trash, I literally threw those out. Sega and SNES. Cybernator and Metal Warriors are mech themed, totally different, great, but essentially unrelated. Mech simulation is a genre in and of itself. Love your reviews and I don't always agree but in this case this seemed clueless. There's racing games, flight sims, mech sims...its a vehicle not "make go boom" whatever thats supposed to mean. The back drop is a sleazy cyberpunkish dystopian future like in 3 for pc. Well...I mean the aesthetic, its all MW from the tabletop material. You can like what you want but this is not another casual video game concept and it sounds like you might not have been judging it on its own terms. Which you are certainly free to do, this is all very subjective, obviously. I write this only because people may be mislead by what you said here, so, for the record, this is an A tier (or close) SNES game that managed to be a mech sim, which is usually a pc kind of thing, and you didn't like it. Not a confused out dated bunch of gobbledygook that can be substituted with Cybernator or Batteltech 3050. That's like saying if you don't like Outrun play RC Pro-Am it's got cars "Varoom, Varoom." Just my two cents. I joked about making mean comments on your channel on Dans Letterman channel, oh well, I guess I've lived up to that now, heh. But hey, I liked and I left a comment?
Edie: I regret being so harsh here, I was whiskey drunk when I wrote this, I probably should have been SNES drunk only. Heh.

loved Mechwarrior, hated Armored Core. MW felt like lumbering, walking tanks, AC felt like Ninjas jumping around.

If you are interested in a bit more "all things Battletech" I suggest this video by Raz0rfist, he will fill in the blanks: th-cam.com/video/h92N63ElI4s/w-d-xo.html
Battletech for the Genesis used its CPU well with the speed of the game, even sounds like a DOS game so might be a laugh. The SNES ones seem to have aged due to their framerate.

It's the same with desert strike, the Genesis version doesn't have noticeable slow down and sounds like a DOS game

This is way too late and it definitely dates me but I'm pretty sure I told my mom that I would give Santa my left (good) testicle to be able to run MechWarrior 2 on my 486 dx33. Santa obviously didn't accept my trade.

I think both were simply done by the same dev which led to this. If both were the same dev, maybe the SNES game would be better than that.

I'm going to be honest here, being able to strafe would make the game worse in my opinion. Just based off the fact that battlemechs in battletech can't strafe... that would honestly annoy me to no end.
