I walk that every Spring. My Grandpa was a Gandydancer on that line for 50 years. We grew up in Mace. He started at 14 years old working for West Virginia Pulp and Paper. In 1927 he became a WM employee when the line was sold the the WM. The phone booth at the head of the Cut is the only on the line still standing. Love the history and beauty of this line. I work at Cass and have for 31 years. I have walked all sections of track that Grandpa helped build and maintain. Thanks for posting.
I could tell just by the target design on that high switch stand that this is an ex-Western Maryland line. This video had me digging out my WM books to look at Thomas Sub photos again. Still remember riding a fan trip out of Baltimore to Elkins, WV back in 1974.
Joey.....I rode THROUGH the Big Cut on WM Shay #6 in 2009. It's hard to think they have allowed the Cut to get to this stage. There was talk of opening this line up to US 219 bridge......seems that will not happeen. Thanks for sharing.
awesome footage, thanks for posting , in another 10 years you might not be able to get thru it all , mother nature looks to be reclaiming what is hers .. cheers from Melbourne, Australia.
I have had the pleasure of riding the tracks from Elkins up to Spruce multiple times with my Fairmont Railcar. Once we ran thru the cut and continued on to the first major washout. That was about ten years ago. since that time the boulders have blocked the tracks and the run was terminated just before the cut entry. Its a nice short run on the rail connection from Spruce over to the Cass R.R. to watch the steam trains descend from Bald Knob.
Thanks for the views from back home ( Marlinton ). The trains that I know of that went through Marlinton was in 1978. I'm going back for a visit in late June.
Back in Strasburg..."yeah, Doreen, I tell ya...some 3D printed ties and trestles, a couple bags of dirt, throw those rocks off to the side and I won't have to put any more train layouts in the shop...whaddya think, Hon?"
She keeps saying, go work on that layout. I will, we're trying to get rid of some unused equipment to free up some more space. You've known me long enough to know changes are always happening.
I wish they could fix up that line and run passenger excursions but that would cost a boat load of money. I just hate that theirs not much left of the Western Maryland Railway lines
Is the right of way still owned by the RR? I would not want to hike this and risk trespassing if any of the RoW had reverted to the surrounding landowners. Also check out the ex-WM between Hendricks and Thomas, which is now a bike trail. You can ride it both ways or just go downhill and get a shuttle back up.
Thanks for sharing the video on your hike just wondering what type of traffic was on that railroad mostly it reminds me of the old abandoned saluda grade in North Carolina but Norfolk Southern still owns the right of way you can't hike that

Tammy. Great story! We've probably ran into at some point

Nature is quickly reclaiming her land! Thanks for sharing.
Great video. For those not up for the long hike, there are great train rides to Spruce from Elkins and Cass.
Absolutely! Highly reccomend folks take the trains out of Elkins and Cass for that matter.
That was a thoroughly enjoyable video. What a great thing to be doing. I'd love to go to that part of your country one day.

Thanks for sharing some incredible video of the old WM footprint. Sure would be nice if WV can do something with that line someday.
Beautiful footage Joey! I really like the dronage :)

Certainly a beautiful part of my home state. Love your drone work as well.
That's some beautiful countryside thanks for sharing 👍👍
You should go out west where there are real mountains when it snows and come back down it’s warm.

Perfect use of a drone. Great to see, thanks!

Beautiful place
Hiked the same tracks as a kid with my dad. The railroad was much better shape in early 90s

I grew up in Ohio and think WV is the most beautiful state in the country!

This line was mostly logging and coal this far down. We love Saluda too.
Great hike and vid; any chance of this trackage seeing trains ever again ?
New camper? A Cougar 22rbs. I have the same model.
Yes. Traded in the no boundaries and got the cougar! Love it so far.
Very pretty country.
It’s a long hike. Last time I went 10years ago. Took the salamander train to spruce. Much easier.
Awesome video.
We vacation in WV and would like to hike those tracks soon.
Where exactly did you start your hike?
Thanks, awesome video of history.
Does that old railroad run. From spruce over to Webster Springs?
Did it at one time?
I love the old train lines.
Our vacation home (my Grandparent's old Homestead) is between Cowen and Erbacon.
I expected a ghost town Misleading. But was pretty
what for drone do you use?
This one is the Air 2S. Really like it compared to previous drones.
@@tracksidescenery cool thanks
That’s not a grill. With all those controls on it, that’s an oven.
the route needs reviving
😁
