I pretty much treat my clothes the same way but buy the concentrate at a farmer's supply ( they sell it to use in horse stalls) and mix in a pump sprayer. We use a camper, boondock half the time, I spray the campsite down right after parking the camper. This helps control the ants and spiders also. This also works well around the foundation of the house. Once in a pinch, I sprayed a wasp nest. Didn't kill the wasps instant but they flew around blind and straight to the ground and died a few minutes later.

Be careful with Permethrin around Cats. Their liver cant metabolize the essential oil and it will give them insane muscle spasms and seizures and it can kill them. Just something to be aware of. Went through this when the cat slept with the dog in his bed and some of the Permethrin treatment got on him. May not be an issue once its dry But I would definitely take care durring the application process to keep your felines safe and away from the area!

Luke, you mentioned the valve stem can get mucked up. I suggest you do the same with this as I do for pressurized paint cans. When you are done spraying, turn the can upside down and depress the valve until all the insecticide is out of the stream and you only get and hear the propellant. This should take care of the problem.

Luke, you got that spray all over your left hand!! 1. wear rubber gloves when spraying permethrin! Sealed eye goggles, and a painters respirator mask (like a sealed gas mask), too. 2. Wash up afterwards with grease cutting dish soap! 3. Keep Deet far from your car - it blisters your paint!! Yup, I use them all the time, too. 4. Colloidal silver is the best preventative for Lyme. I take 2 tbsp 2X a day, every day, and when I get a 'hot' bite, I also use the gel on the bite. I get tested for Lyme every blood test, clean. Yes, I have had several 'hot' bites. I always look forward to your videos. I tell people that I'm not afraid of bears but I am obsessive about ticks. I also treat my clothes and skin separately. I use permethrin on my clothes and equipment, spraying around the openings of my tent and sleeping bag. But for the past two years I exclusively use picaridin on my skin. Its as effective as Deet but doesn't have the noxious smell, doesn't leave an oily residue on your skin, and most important, it doesn't damage your equipment.

Very good suggestions. I got two tick bites in 2015 on spring hikes. Both were embedded pretty good. Ended up going to the doctor because the bites started to look really bad, and was put on antibiotics both times. Tested negative for lime disease, but since then I treat everything with permethrin, including the outside of my sleeping bag and my tyvek ground sheet (I sleep under a tarp). My body gets sprayed with picaridin.

    • @KamilM-j8l
      @KamilM-j8l ปีที่แล้ว

When do you treat tyvek ground sheet with permethrin? Just before goind to sleep on it or in home before hiking? I was thinking about the same but I was afraid that tyvek will not absorb permethrin because this is basically some kind of plastic and permethrin will simply flow over it. Second idea that I have is using agrotextile instead of tyvek. Agrotextile is some kind of textile so it should absord permethrin probably...

I got Lyme disease in Nov 2018 deer hunting. Snow on the ground. As long as temp is above freezing ticks can be active. Did not know that. Permethrin is now my tick killer of choice and you can buy clothes already treated with it. Picaridin is the best repellent for ticks according to the Tick Encounter Resource Center of U of Rhode Island and other research and info area I was able to find including my infectious disease doctor that treated me. Not deet! Deet is not as effective against ticks as Picaridin (repellent) and Permethrin (Killer). As a very interested bystander I thought I would add my two cents worth.

Very good info as always Luke! My experiences are a little different with permethrin i guess. I dont use it too much anymore. I went up to pharoah lake ADK's recently and started off with sawyers permethrin spray and within a half hour the bugs were laying into me. I finally got fed up and went with the sawyer 99% deet and never got touched by a bug the rest of the trip!! I know deet isn't the safest route but it works!! My uncle was also telling me in the military they got alot of warnings about pemethrin even though it was sometimes used. He was a medic bronze star in desert storm and warned me about using it. He retired in 94' so thats not to say they haven't made some better changes with it since. I thoroughly check myself up and down regardless of what im using. I get home from the woods and leave that clothing outside and hop right in the shower! Highly recommend that technique aswell!! Always check your crotch area of your pants too i know that sounds funny but they hide there for the warmth and fit in between the stitching sometimes. Lymes is bad where i live! Use what works for you too of course! Stay safe guys!! Hike on!!

Lyme disease, as well as other tick borne illnesses, are everywhere now. And despite what some may say, it can be a terrible chronic illness. That's why it's important to wear the proper clothing ( long sleeve shirt tucked in to pants tucked into socks) and have the clothing treated with permethrin (the only thing that actually works at killing ticks). After being out you should take a shower and then check for ticks using a mirror for checking your back. Please stay safe everyone.

Inexpensive permethrin can be purchased at "tractor supply" as equine pest spray as a 10% solution. You can get them online for 20$ per quart. This can be diluted to 20:1 in a good spray bottle for pennies on the dollar vs the cost of sawyer spray. They are all basically the same. Some form of petroleum distillate to dissolve the water insoluble permethrin. Once sprayed, the petroleum and water evaporate, leaving a very fine "powder" that water can't dissolve. I use it liberally on all my gear and field cloths. It's amazing. Just remember, using a stronger solution for cloths is pretty safe, IMHO. If you plan to spray animals, follow the directions and DON"T EXPOSE cats. It's toxic to felines.

All good advice Luke. Thanks. I have used the Ben's 100% Deet for over 20 years and it's the only product that works well in my area.
As to ticks jumping, I cannot ever say that I have seen a tick jump ON me or my dogs, but I can absolutely say that I have seen many, many jump OFF me and my dogs when they are pursued. They don't fall off and they don't run off. The spring off like a flea which makes them hard to capture and kill. If we discover an unembedded tick when we come in the house we have to be particularly careful in trying to pick it off. You can pick one off and pinch it in your fingertips, but if you open your fingers to see if you have it - BANG! - they're off like a shot. Now you have a live, hunting tick in your house.

Can also use light colored tick gaiters to go over your lower pant legs. Ticks are much easier to spot on these gaiters than on regular pants and has material that inhibits ticks from crawling. They are also treated with permethrin.

People will say they don't like the feel of Deet on their skin. It's probably because they use too much. If I'm headed into the woods in a T-shirt and shorts I'll apply no more than 2 drops to my hands, rub them together, then rub my hands over the exposed areas of my body. This will usually last me 2 - 4 hours and then I'll repeat the treatment. You can put it on heavier and it will probably last longer, but it does give you this greasy, tacky feel for a while.
My meter is my nose. If I can still smell it on my skin it is still working.

I spray, spray, and spray everything, every time. I wear long sleeves and pants every time too. I’m not getting ticks, poison ivy, or massive mosquito bites. Ohio is bad with all of it. I only had one tick on my for a few minutes when I was 5 because I literally rolled in the grass. One day when I was 20 and out fishing with some friends, I literally picked 13 off of me once I realized I was covered. I found one in my hair the next morning. I ended up having to go to the dr a week or two later when I found a large lump behind my ear. It was a swollen lymph node from fighting some infection close to where I found the tick. Dr gave me the run down of how to deal with them on me if it happens again. Never again though lol. It was a blessing nothing worse happened from it.

I’ve been using Ben’s and Permethrin for a few years now. It is the bees knees for mosquitoes and ticks. Lasts hours. Spray a squirt or two on your hand and rub on skin. You will waste it if you spray directly. Just takes a little. I have never found a tick on me after using Ben’s and Permethrin. And yes be very careful about getting DEET on any plastic, nylon, or poly stuff.

If you don't like deet, you can use picaridin. Works just as well for ticks and mosquitoes and is better for flies. It is not as gross as deet and won't eat your plastic watch face, etc. But the permethrin on clothing/shoes thing is the best possible strategy, it really does eliminate tick issues entirely on its own if you do it right. I typically give it a couple days after I treat my clothing before I wear it, just to make sure it is 100% dry. Since the stuff is expensive, one small tip: only spray the parts of your socks that will stick out from your shoes. If your shoes and the tops of your socks are treated, you are good.

I agree with the use of Permetherin, as it is effective for a few weeks, or a few washes, however treating with Permetherin becomes a "Chore" after a while, and expensive too!
For the most part I have moved on from Permetherin, and I am using Insect Shield treated clothing, which utilizes a patented process developed by a company known by the same name (Insect Shield), and the No Fly Zone treated clothing brand using a patented process developed by Burlington.
Both companies claim that the treatment will last through 70 washings, which is a long time, especially if you are rotating shirts, and socks.
I always wash in cold water, and keep track of the number of washings just to see how well the clothing works after numerous washes.
I own treated short sleeve shirts, but mostly long sleeve shirts, hoodies, and boonie, bucket, and wide brimmed hats, along with socks, and they work real well to deter all kinds of insects.
I rarely if ever wash a hat, except maybe a quick rinse in soap and water, so a hat is pretty much permanent.
My experience shows that the insects pretty much leave me alone, especially when wearing a long sleeve shirt, and a hat, and/or a hoodie, as the head, arms, and torso seem to be where the mosquitoes focus their attention.
I have not purchased any treated pants yet, as I usually always wear long pants, and they pretty much protect me, and again I wear treated crew or boot height socks underneath.
I may add a treated neck gaiter, or perhaps just use permetherin on one.
I also recently purchased a Sea to Summit Insect Shield treated Coolmax sleeping bag liner. I am waiting to test it while I sleep in a hammock without a bug net.
This seems like a great setup, as the light Coolmax liner is great for warm summer nights, as it will wick perspiration, yet it will cover my entire body with an insect repellent shield, and of course I can also wear my treated clothing hat, socks, hoodie, while in the liner.
I totally disagree with the use of DEET, and I am surprised that it is still sold, as it does damage certain surfaces, and materials, and many people have had an adverse reaction when DEET is applied to their skin. DEET wipes are the only DEET product that I ever found somewhat pleasant to use, as it was much easier to just pinpoint, and wipe the particular parts of my body that I wanted to protect without over spray.
Personally I hate DEET, and instead use repellents with 20% Picaridin, and Lemon Eucalyptus which work just as well in my experience, and testing labs like Consumer Reports concur, as they have tested all these repellents extensively for effectiveness, safety, and adverse reactions, etc.
Of course I have been in places like Alaska where a "cloud" of insects would literally follow you around, so a head net, and sometimes a mesh bug suit are also great additions to your kit.
    Good Luck!

"Patmas and Remora reported on a case of Lyme disease that was transmitted after only 6 hours of attachment by a deer tick. The authors concluded that, “The current recommendation against treatment of short duration tick bites may need reconsideration.”(1994)"
The claims that removal of ticks within 24 hours or 48 hours of attachment will effectively prevent LB are not supported by the published data, and the minimum tick attachment time for transmission of LB in humans has never been established.

I don't use permethrin, i have pets that rub on me and lick their fur and paws, and they don't need to ingest insecticide. I use 20 % picaridin or at least 15 % deet and spray my neck wrists, skin areas like he said and especially spray my pant cuffs and pant legs heavily. Then when i get home from my outdoor excursion I put the clothes in my separate hamper in the garage and take shower to get the bug dope off me and check my skin surfaces . So far that has worked well for me.

You say "hand spray". I have a mind picture of someone spraying their hands, which is to be avoided at all costs. I grew up with the term "pump spray", which I think is more straightforward. I have used it for years and am very impressed with its effectiveness. I have actually seen ticks die and fall off of the legs of my pants. I almost always wear long pants and tuck the legs into my socks. I have bug mesh pants that I put on over my shorts after I zip the legs off of my pants. Looks funny, but I have a lot of hikers ask me where I bought them (any outdoor store or online). Buy them larger than you think you'll need if you're hiking in them. Some are tighter fitting and can bind up on your knees. Nylon mesh is tougher than polyester, in my own experience. Yes, they do retain some body heat. As Luke mentioned, ticks live under fallen leaves and exist in several stages of development year-round there.

Permethrin is pretty difficult to get up in Canada, so I've had to resort to wearing full length tights beneath my shorts when I know I'll be bushwhacking, especially if I know the area I'm going to is known for ticks. Sometimes I'll just resort to regular pants, and tuck the bottoms into my socks. I know I look like a dork, and it's less than ideal in the heat, but it's better than the alternative. Beyond that, I'm always packing deet.
One tip for treating your shoes (and other clothing) is to make sure they're very clean. You want the permethrin to bond to the fabric/material and not to the surface dust and dirt.

In Alaska, the bugs drink "Off" like beer. Everyone up there grabs for Ben's 100% DEET. It's VILE stuff, but it works. And it WILL degrade your gear. Back in the day when Kershaw used that black rubbery material as pocket knife scales, DEET makes it feel wet/sticky and it never changes back to normal. Yup, Permethrin for the gear, "Off" for the skin.
