    The Open Roads app/TSD has a toll transponder you can get. Makes all of those tolls easier to get through. Especially out east. Might want to look into it.

    If you ever run the Pennsylvania Turnpike be sure to get an EZ Pass as the already confiscatory tolls are double without it. Works in Ohio, WVA plus most east coast states.

    Hot tip on the Cracker docking, you are on an end parking spot with grass on your door side, we will often pull in the other way and ask if we can run our slides out so they are over the grass not intruding into the next parking spot (we cant access the bunk room, fridge, ect with them in) and usually they are like "yea sure whatever you need" same with running a genny for the night if its super hot, but we always ask.

    It would have been longer, but coming out of Chicago stay on 94. Skip the skyway. Take 94 thru Indiana. Get off at hwy 20 and then take 20 or hwy 2 into Elkhart. Then you skip the Indiana toll road too. No tolls. Use to do this route all the time to get to South Bend.

    Don't take the Chicago Skyway - ever - take 294 to 80 or 94. You can get around it without those tolls (some tolls but not Skywat tolls) but not the traffic

  • @johnhines3591
    @johnhines3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Price of all those tolls could have drove around.
    We run fridge on propane while driving all the time. Propane isn't that expensive. Fridge alone, 1 tank will last over 1 month. Cheaper than the tolls you just paid.
    Modern propane systems are different than the old ones. If concerned, add a gas stop to tanks. Changing out fridge is expensive.

    Love seeing Louie in your videos! Great idea about using the koozies! I grew up in Chicago and now live in Tennessee. I go back to Chicago multiple times a year to see my granddaughter. I have my GPS settings on "no tolls" it doesn't add any measurable time to the trip, but does say me lots of money. Especially that one toll of $7 for only 3/4 of a mile in Indiana just as I you leave Indiana and enter Illinois.

    Enjoy the videos of your travels. Three suggestions
    1. Have you considered a dc to dc battery charger to increase the charge from the truck while traveling?
    2. Have to considered a long neck wide mouth funnel for filling you fresh tank from a bladder or container?
    3. While we were full timing we had a few issues there our rv was unavailable to us overnight. We always use a hotel rewards point visa card so that we can accumulate rewards for hotel nights is we are out of the rv. We have one time where we had leaks around the slide and developed mold. That time we went on a cruise because it was going to be over a week and the cruise was cheaper than hotel rooms and eating out, Just something to consider,

    Our 1st TT we had an 12V compressor fridge and knew we could never go to a dual Fridge using LP so when we upgraded this year to our New Grand Design 22mle a must have was a 12V Compressor fridge 10cubt and ours is a Dometic. But loved our previous NorCold 10Cubft which i feel was a better Fridge. They build theirs from ground up. Much colder better functional interior shelving. We have towed 17 hrs with Ice cream in the freezer and no issues! Love the 12V & 7 pin connection which helps us while towing we only have a 165watt solar panel. We're not boondockprs.

Our service department says there is a connection for 12 volt already available so it is an easy switch. I saw some TH-cam videos that said you have to thread a wire from the fridge to the battery. It will be interesting what you all did. Also, how did you decide between the different 12 volt Rv fridges. Love the pup! What a great boy!

    We FINALLY took delivery of our Outdoors RV 26KVS in Pendleton on July 30. Our Norcold refrigerator wasn't working (although the freezer worked fine). We stopped at the dealership before leaving town and they ended up replacing it with another new unit; they have a stash of new Norcolds that were replaced with 12V refrigerators. We'll eventually go 12V. Although we likely won't have as awesome of a lithium/solar setup as you guys, I think we'll have enough to make it feasible. And great to know the Dometic can run off the 7-pin. Thank you very much!

    We traveled from Shipshewana through Chicago 5 years ago and it cost $70.00 in tolls with our Dodge diesel and 32 foot Coachman 5er. We learned our lesson and refuse to travel ANY toll roads with the RV. If we are going west from Michigan we either go south of Chicago or head north through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

    A couple of things here......Chicago actually just sucks. I am originally from North Dakota and live in New Hampshire and have been driving this route for 35 years, it has never been good and takes forever, we use to have to stop like every 1/2 mile and pay a toll and they were like 35 cents, 10 cents...etc. Looking for a different route to take my trailer home through.....Indiana's toll system is a joke for the amount they charge. I live in toll charging areas and not even Boston is that expensive. I love Cracker Barrel overnighting....I have also worked the breakfast menu to be healthier, but I love the Pecan Rolls. Nice to know about the staying there, we ran into a guy who worked there all night in Tennessee this spring and that was by far the cleanest one we ever ate at, but he told us that he is in there all night. It is nice to see we all help each other out. Thanks for the fun videos, I learn so much from you two and Louie

    I have avoided illinois tolls for ~20 yrs. We do go between MI and WI couple times a year. Skyway (now private toll system) is not needed since alternative route (I94/I80) was widened, especially when you avoid rush hour, which you really need to do regardless of route. I often go thru Milwaukee but best bypass (single short toll) is I80 though best used when going to Iowa. You apparently can get away with 2 toll nonpayment each year, before they mail you a bill. You can register your plate online to auto-pay your illinois tolls though they charge you the old cash rate (2x) with this system. I do wonder if you double paid the Skyway toll or the second toll was Indiana. Could have gone through MI I94 for free.

    You could have gone I65 south to US 30 east. A company we worked for made us do that in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Sorry didn't know you were going to Michigan. But there are other roads to miss the tolls.

    I suggest a good water filter (I use the 2 stage Clean20) followed by an RV water softener. That way, the water in your tank is fit for service. We have a 24RLS and commonly drive with full freshwater tank.

    Nice job on the photography on the intro ! We just got our new ODRV (had a Jayco prior). Like yourselves we really wanted to get a 12v fridge; but as of 8/5/22 ODRV's it was not an option. Will anxiously await your install video. We learned the same lesson in 97' with a 32' Class A going thru Chicago. It was really high even back then. We don't have toll roads out here in the PNW..

    We take 294 around Chicago and there is massive construction so unless you are comfortable towing between a concrete barrier and a semi paying the $ might be better option😂 love your vid’s have come a long way since the beginning

    What's wrong with burning propane?.. it's it virtuous thing to save the planet or something else?.. i own 2 x 12v fridges and my propane fridge out performs them both, the 12v struggle in really hot temps vs the propane.. safe travels, glad to see you back on the road

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks 🙏 glad to be back on the road! Interesting, our fridges are the exact opposite of yours, propane struggles in temps over the 80’s as well as really cold temps. The 12 volt compressor fridges just seem to be more consistent on the inside temp no matter where we are. On the propane thing… its really just more of a pain to refill them while traveling full time. It’s not sold everywhere, it’s not easy like finding a gas station with a app or Google. ( maybe someone should create a app 🤔) . The propane fills go out of service often or the “ only guy who knows how to use it” is at lunch break. 🤣 come back in a hour! Just a hassle. We do use it for our propane Weber grill everyday and if we’re not using the furnace we can last 6 plus months instead of filling up every month.

    There's no such thing as a safety overflow. You have a fuel leak! Usually where the fill tube connects to the fuel tank. GET IT FIXED!!!

      It was the diesel exhaust fluid tank that was leaking after I filled it, but I'll get down there and do a double check on everything . Thanks!

    Great Video! The tolls are a great welcoming committee back towards the East. I live in NJ so I won't get into the tolls😡 As soon as you get up to the speed limit you have to slow down to go through another toll. 😄 Anyway, good to see you rolling down the highway. Enjoy your travels. P.S. EZ Pass is definitely overcharging us for our 19 foot class B 🚐

    Hi Guys, nice move on the frig, hoping by the time I'm ready to make the move, ODRV will option in some modern upgrades. One other would be the shower mizer. If ever a 3rd channel, " Louie knows how to Travel ". Glad you're happy with solar and battery bank. Was the RV wiring gauge sufficient or did you re-wire. Safe travels.

    Hi Chris and Aaron!! Awesome video, as always!! I look forward to hearing about your 12v fridge experiences.
    Bleh...yes, those propane fridges on electric from the solar system is a battery killer, for sure!! We started a drive at 8pm at night and by 9am, we were down to only like 25% of our 500amp hours of battery left :-(
    We are heading to Mexico at the end of the month!!
    Safe travels!!

    Toll roads in Illinois,Indiana,Michigan and Ohio are controlled by the unions with perpetual construction (job security) and deplorable road conditions! I know, I used to live in Illinois and owned a trucking business. Most of my hauling was on the toll roads 40 years ago and nothing has changed!

    Finally glad to see the new refrigerator! Thank you. Since I am also getting an ORV soon, I've been thinking about what to do with the spare tire (don't like it on the back bumper). I haven't noticed your spare? Where do you store it?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spare is in our truck bed…. But takes up some space! I briefly looked into a under mount for the RV and will probably go that route. I was hoping it would fit on the Rv tongue behind the propane… but it didn’t!

      My last trailer it was underbelly and I loved it. I asked the dealer on my new RV and he said they haven't been able to do it (hangs too low). I think they don't want to mess with it so I'll figure a way to get it done elsewhere. I'd be curious to see if you make it work. Thanks for your teply.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it does, but it does have a performance mode and 5 cold settings... It only took about an hour to come down to temp, when we first installed it. We actually have to keep it at 3, because 4 was freezing our produce! It is much more constant temp than our previous and is only around 50 watts.
