    10:30 This is exactly where I am right now. Never imagined I would have dual lands or Mox Diamonds or Gaea's Cradles in my collection. But I finally had the epiphany that I could convert newer $100+ cards that I will never actually play in a deck and that will tank if reprinted into high end RL cards. Serious level up this year.

      I used to have Mox Diamonds years ago, back when the were still less than $10 each. Although I started re-buying a lot of the cards I used to have (was so happy to re-acquire a Workshop, love that card) Mox Diamonds I can ignore as they never made the cut into any deck, and the art isn't compelling enough for me to want it in my art binder.
      The few times I ran Mox Diamond I had to kind of 'force it in' and there was always something better to replace it with. 😕

      @Alpha-Prophetic The reason I have 4 Vintage decks is exactly that, it's hard to find a casual Vintage game. Normally I play them with a friend that's still kind of new to the game and only has EDH decks, Vintage lets him see cool interactions backed by raw aggression.
      I do plan on replacing the Chinese duals and Forces for authentic copies, but the power, Bazaars and Library...probably never going to replace them, I cannot see myself in a position where I can lock up that much value for decks I rarely play.
      Well, maybe I'll talk myself into buying the 1 Library. 😀
      Here in Europe there is a 'healthy' Legacy / Vintage tournament scene, sometimes from what I read I think those formats are more popular here than in the states.

    I put the split in 1999 -- pre and post Hasbro buyout. That makes the last "vintage" set Portal Three Kingdoms and the first non-vintage set Mercadian Masques. Conveniently, this also lines up with the end of the reserved list as the last non-portal set released before the Hasbro buyout was Urza's Destiny.

    I like the quiet, much nicer than a wild ride where I have to pay so much attention with what I'm interested in. But I feel a shakeup is coming as the markets slowly regain speed and sales pick up too. At least that''s what some stores say, they get in more orders again. This will also come to old cards, perhaps not in the next weeks but very likely in the next months to come. I hope to get some of my target cards before that price jump comes along, it might be like early 2021 when some prices just doubled or more. We'll see.

    I tend to define Vintage in MTG as: all 21 sets that have Reserved List cards; Duel Decks; the RL cards in/the sets of Phyrexia vs. the Coalition, From the Vault: Relics, Judge Promos, Magic Player Rewards, & Prerelease cards; 4th edition [especially the Alternate], Chronicles, 5th Edition, 6th Edition, and 7th [since it's the first core set with foils]. I'm still on the fence about certain unnamed sets [Nemesis, Prophecy, Invasion, Planeshift, Apocalypse, Odyssey, Torment, Judgement, Legions, & Scourge], I think once Magic turns 30, I will revise my definition to anything pre-Scourge. However, I guess a simpler definition would be anything Premodern or older. I think that's a fair definition of the term Vintage since it basically covers the first 1/3 of Magic's history. Another working definition could be anything that's 20-years or older, since it allows to be updated every year.

    Vintage investing for me is: alpha beta unlimited revised, and arabian nights, legends, antiquities, the dark. Anything else is not Vintage. I agree NM is the way to go for collecting. It gives you an easy out if you have to sell some cards down the road for cash. NM cards are more liquid, much easier to sell. Collectors don't buy anything less than NM, unless the card in question is ultra rare or sees tons of play and is reseve list.

    • @mojosodope45
      @mojosodope45 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. There are 8 vintage sets. Abu revised and the four horsemen. They are the only sets I buy cards from. Makes it a lot easier to deal with FOMO and wallet fatigue with a new product every month.

    I am being "forced" to buy a house.
    There's a lot to it, but, essentially I'm not in a financial position to continue pursuing as I had been.
    Luckily, so far, I have been able to retain my entire collection; all sealed product, all RL, all play decks and "value/trade" binders.
    But if I was able to, folks, I'd be investing hard as I had been.
    Global markets, looming recessions, price increases of goods and services, these are the things that force collectors to offload assets.
    And usually... at bargain, or near enough, prices.

    Great vid. I think it's worth mentioning Revised. Several great RL cards and also the same iconic artworks. I think the supply of NM or better rares is not as high as people think as many Revised cards were played without sleeves also. I still think the whole set is very undervalued across the board.

    Started mtg in 1996 so for me ice age block / 4th edition and before feels like vintage. Ten years later when I finally earned money I bought playsets of abyss, drop of honey, many duals and singles like a time walk. Because I wanted to own and playing with those, couldnt imagine such an increase in price. Now I start selling my multiples in order to buy specific cards I always wanted to OWN, cant wait finally holding a library or moat in my hands :)

    • @insaned4666
      @insaned4666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally hear ya.
      I grabbed a bunch of stuff I thought was cool when I got my first “big boy job” after college and had extra money laying around. One each of Moat, The Abyss, Nether Void, All Hallow’s Eve, Chains, Candleabra… AN stuff like Guardian Beast, Island of Wak Wak, … all under $200 each. Grabbed a play set of Living Plane because I wanted to build a deck that made lands creatures so I could Eradicate them to screw over mono colored decks … just for the lulz. Grabbed a play set of Eureka for a deck idea. Never stopped buying duals (70+) because I hated deconning my decks and they were $40 or under each at the time (bought a UL Plateau for $12 at a LGS). Have a number of Chaos Orbs for the same reason. Even had a friend ink one up for fun. Still use it in my Chaos 250. Some Alpha stuff because my friends made fun of my collection that had a lot of white bordered stuff when I started … so I have a Word if Command, Psionic Blasts, a Forcefield, and some others.
      I wished I would have bought more Arabian nights though. Had almost pulled the trigger on a Library a couple of times. Always wanted a Drop of Honey. Wish I would have picked up a Tabernacle. Wish I wouldn’t have sold my Lotus … my only piece of power. Lots of mistakes to go with the smart moves. Such is hindsight.

    As prices go up, market gets smaller and smaller. I own my power out of nostalgia, but majority of my gains have been made through Masters, Modern Horizons 1/2, and lottery card draft booster boxes.
    PS with retailers ending buylists or timmies selling to Rudies at 50% on the dollar, you need generational gains to turn a profit. Take a played ungraded black lotus at 9-20k USD, unless you got the card at 2-5k, you aren’t going to turn a profit and liquidate quickly. Sadly, bid and offer for collectibles have huge spreads along with far less liquidity versus public equities.

    For me vintage is premodern era foil and anything prior to when they put the rarity in the set symbol. I don't care TOO much about buying the reserve list anymore. 4-5 years ago, I was buying beta, arabian, antiquity and legends cards. 3 years ago I was buying arabian nights commons/unco, the dark, reserve list foil and mid tier RL. 2 years ago I started to buy vintage foils CHEAP, but I stopped faster than expected cause they went up way too fast (within less than 6 month of me doing it). Since last year, I've been buying collector edition/international edition NM, common/unco vintage foils NM only and a couple of random cards here and there. I'm curious this time how long I will be able to do it before the market switch and price me out of this too.

    Collect what you love but what you know too. I'm always learning about the game and experiencing the hunt; it makes the saving and the chase all that more enjoyable when I land the card I've been after. Magic is so piquant - even more so with all the sets and variants floating around.
    I'm always about RL (yes, you know I also have specific 'pet ' cards I collect too), but there's some cards for me that are just too nice (old border foils in nm condition), old sets (beautiful to own and nostalgic to me), cards that are woke-banned (cards that WotC hierarchy deem problematic to modern audiences but are historically important), and finally Unlimited (no A/B but affordable to me to enjoy the classics)
    Just enjoy the experience.

    • @keywacat
      @keywacat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really depends on the card. Copy Artifact, probably 2 revised are better in the long run, more so if you need to sell it but still have a deck that needs it. Clone, a single Unlimited is better as that card's price will take so long to recover it's better to get the oldest version one can afford (stated as someone that bought Brago an Unlimited clone for precisely this reasons).

    My overall collection has 4 main divisions:
    1. Tier 2 / obsolete modern decks maintained to play well against each other
    2. 4 Vintage decks (powered by China!)
    3. EDH decks
    4. My 'art binders' full of cards I like the art on and do not make the cut into a deck for whatever reason
    Something I want to do with my art binders is have at least 1 representational card from every non-silver border, tournament-legal set. I recently crossed Portal: 3 Kingdoms off the list, now I just need to get 1 representational Alpha card. I'm thinking False Orders or Invisibility as a card still affordable, yet not in revised, or Hurloon Minotaur as the old mascot of the game.
    edit: Read other comments and realised I forgot about my minuscule stash of sealed boxes, which I keep far away from my other cards to minimise temptation to open anything (that and watching videos of crap box openings, like the poor bastard that got ZERO TSR: Timeshifted foils. ZERO) and will be the first thing to get sold if I have to start selling.
    In fact that's pretty much why I have sealed product, as a speculative buffer to protect my main collections if I suddenly need cash.

    Im a big fan of truely limited releases for MTG over vintage magic personally. Things like Mythic Editions, SDCC Planeswalkers, Throne of Eldraine Deluxe Editions, and limited secret lairs (ie. Beadle and Grimms Dragons). These are exceptionally collectible, have a lower capital outlay and typically appreciate faster than vintage but are relatively less liquid. I usually target buylist pricing + 10% for any of these releases to help limit downside risk. Ultimately I am capped out on MTG and collectible investing this year, with rising interest rates more focused on income baring stocks and bond. Also looking at purchasing an income property in the next 2 years after house prices drop and level out.

    Everyone is being squeezed financially this summer with fuel and insane power bills (plus endless heat waves). I think the vintage market will be stagnant until Christmas bonuses and tax refund season arrives. So I guess a good time for bargains if you can afford it

    Sometimes the things you say make me question if you are just a really pretty face 😏. Reserve list doesn’t mean most powerful cards in magic. There is next to no correlation except for what 9 cards? Of those 9 cards only what 1 or 2 are legal in edh? And the ones that are legal are like the absolute bottom end of that 9 card list in terms of power. It isn’t that the reserve list cards are “very powerful” it’s simply that they are old and can’t be reprinted.

    The market is severely underpriced, especially on specific ABU/Horsemen cards. All it’s going to take is one ultra whale, or a group of investors to clean everything out 🤷‍♀️

      It definitely only takes one whale or group of investors to put an old reserve list card through the roof... recent evidence: argivian archeologist. It's relatively inexpensive to buy out a card where there are only 5-10 copies available on the open market. Search any arabian nights rare

    All collectibles went through the room because of crypto money laundering. (Ie buying collectibles with value but no official money value in order to hide/launder crypto gains). It’ll crash when they need real money.

      Depends on how many of the dire predictions about the economy materialise, and how many people are forced to choose between holding cards or paying rent / buying food.
