- This video explores how the legendary Steve Albini went about recording Nirvana's third album, In Utero. Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic joined Steve in 1993 and recorded the album in under two weeks. While Steve and the band were happy with the finished result, Nirvana's label and management were far from. Steve's integrity shined throughout the process.

It's interesting, before he passed Albini was largely known as "the guy that worked on Surfer Rosa and In Utero" and if you were a little more up on your trivia "the guy who was in a very unfortunately-named band before that". Now that he's gone it's been incredible to see an explosion of recognition, both for his body of work as an engineer and as a musician in his own right. It's not something you see very often for musicians that make it passed 40 - this kind of posthumous 'mythmaking' usually happens to those that die young, like Cobain himself. I'm not sure what to make of that but I'm glad people are realizing the understated importance Albini has had on contemporary music.
I knew Shellac but hadn't listened to Big Black until all of this posthumous attention piqued my curiousity and as a result I am blown away, but left feeling somewhat guilty. It shouldn't have taken his death to make me acknowledge his brilliance.

Hey from NM, USA. I saw Albini once. It was Shellac's Halloween 1998 show where they performed as the Sex Pistols with David Yow joining on vox. Around 1990 I discovered Big Black. As a kid in IL I was amazed we had such a noisy provocative band, and I continued to appreciate him all these years

You didn't go to Albini to make a hit record but an important one. It seems Cobain forgot that when the pressure came.
theres someone who can answer what in particular he thought was changed and distant from his wiew when in utero was re mastered at the label?listening to the live version of the album i dont ear a big difference from the album
