Good video! I work from an apartment in Akron, Ohio USA also. If you leave that antenna up in the rain, the coil will get wet and it won't tune anywhere! If the wind is too strong it will blow the clip lead off and you will lose your SWR. I found a workable solution but I don't to disrespect you if you're trying to make some money selling/advertising the MFJ antenna.
Thank you. This is a compromise antenna. It is what it is. It helps me to have some radio on holiday but it is not taken the place of a real antenna in the roof. Btw am not selling or getting anything from MFJ 🥲
@@Radiogenes I totally understand, I'm not running it down or anything, I've been doing the same thing for several years now. In fact, on the CB band in the late 1970's I put a magnet mount antenna on a piece of steel out the bedroom window and made contacts from very norther Canada, down to Mexico and South America with a 5-watt radio! But if you want something more permanent and maybe more output power, the go with the Hustler antennas with a 1000-watt power rating - for different bands you simply change out traps, and you will need an antenna tuner of some sort! Simple, efficient, and easy my primary strategy with this stuff!
Thanks for the video. I'm in a similar situation - city dweller where a balcony is the most reasonble antenna location. May I ask two question please? 1) how do you find the antenna now after a couple of months of user (maybe)? 2) How long is the element? Thank you.
Telescoping element is about 5 feet long fully extended. The counterpoise should be shortened and lengthen by rolling the end up in a coil to help with the SWR. I have a lot of experience with that antenna. So I modified it; I used the mounting bracket, but replaced the coil trap part with another brand of mobile radiators for 80~10 meters.
In fact, the metal rail could be a good groundZ. if it were bare metal it would be even better. Keep in mind that all vertical antennas need a ground, therefore it is not that bad that the gound pane of the antenna is touching the metal. In any case it is better to have the antenna element away from metal surfaces... so when it is a short antenna there is a compromise between ground and radiatoon from stray metal elements. I think on wood it will be good as long as you play with the ground wire element
Hi, nice video! I have the same "space" problem on the balcony, and I'd like to buy one. How many Watts do u usually use to tx? Are you able to make dx with Europe? Thank you in advance
Hi nic, no problems to dx. I think it is all about conditions but it is overall a nice piece of equipment when you can’t have your wire hunged on a tree. Imho if you can deploy a long wire antenna it is much more cost/efficient.
@@Radiogenes Hi, finally thanks to your video I decided to buy one. I have a doubt about the counterpoise. How do I fix it to the coil? In the packaging they inserted a 10 meter cable but it is full covered by isolation. Have I remove part of its isolation to fix it to the coil? How can I fix it to the coil? Finally, Have I tap the right frequency to the coil even if I only receive without transmit? Because I tried to use the antenna only in receive mode without counterpoise and without tap to the coil the right frequency and I heard a lot of noise. Thank you in advance.
@@nicgreek9993 just peel off one end and clip it or put it in the ground nut. Vertical antennas are prone to pick up more noise than those horizontal or wire antennas. Enjoy mate

Greetings from the United States. Nicely recorded video with attention to detail. After seeing this, thinking of getting an MFJ-1622.
I am considering getting this antenna, thank you for making this video!

COULD YOU RE-MAKE THIS WITHOUT THE MUSIC?
Really annoying noise/music. However, good video. I had one many years ago.
