    Rick is simply the master. The best that ever ran at Indianapolis. Hearing him dissect driving this place is almost bible-like. I'm just simply in awe of this man, his talents, his knowledge. I can listen to Rick all day and night.

    Mears, "fast enough to win but slow enough to finish". Classic wisdom. I always thought that was an Andretti problem. They were always fast enough but didn't make it to the end.

    These kind of videos are really great to watch. I love seeing two different racers discuss their respective sport and compare and contrast how they drive the track. It's fun to watch.

    How cool is this video! Wow, Rick taking that 'Vette round and round so nonchalantly...
    What a privilege too. Bet Jimmy or Rick are able to drive the track anytime they arrange to do so.

    You can also hear when the car goes over the bricks. I timed it off of that and had them at 93 mph.
    This is an incredible conversation. I love the technical side of driving like this.

      I used to take a Marlboro crappy digital stop watch to the race as the official timer.

    Jimmie reminds me so much of Rick in the way that he approaches things. Cool, calm, unflappable. Usually a contender but feels no need to lead the whole race. Sometimes encounters problems and drops back early in the race. Works on the car throughout the event. Always seems to pop up at the end with a chance to go for the win, no matter how improbable it seemed earlier in the race. These guys are cut from the same cloth, and they are both fantastic at what they do. Great stuff.

  • @alans26
    @alans26 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you do the math they are averaging about 95 MPH. I would say a big reason they didn't go faster was because of road noise.

    I always liked the way Mears managed his car. He was content to run 3rd or 4th all day long, but after that last pit stop, here he came and he was nearly impossible to stop.

    At the 5 minute area, I noted that Rick was now up to "his speed" of comfort in this Corvette.
    As nearly all comments have stated, Rick is among one of the best all-time race drivers in the open wheel race cars of auto racing history.
    These guys really know their sport! Both do well in communicating the art of auto racing.
    Now...I've been a "dreamer" for a very long time of seeing a new Indy track: 4 mile or 5 mile oval. That at 4 miles is: 1 mile straight...3/8 mile turn banked at 14 degree...1/4 mile short straight. The width on the main straight: 75 feet. The turns: 82 feet. The 5 mile track: 1 and 1/4 mile straights...1/2 mile turns at 16 or 18 degree. 1/4 mile shorts. The widths at 80 to 85 feet across. I have a lot more "dreams" of the "new-improved" Speedway ovals and that's for later.
    Oh...reason for the "new-improved" track?: For a very long time the speeds that Indy cars have been doing seem, to me, been too much for the 2.5 design. That new design may just be the future of "something" for the people who love speed at a Super Speedway.

    What a shame that Jimmy Johnson will most likely, never compete in an Indy 500. He is a helluva driver and great ambassador for racing. I really believe though, that he could win 10 NASCAR championships and still be "just a great driver in NASCAR". No matter how hard the press tries to run down the Indy 500 it will still be the Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing. Unless Jimmy Johnson runs the 500 he will forever flounder around in the racing world as a damned good stock car driver. His resume will never be complete.

    speed = distance/time ... the reason I said "about 95 MPH" is because I don't have their exact lap times. I went by when the Pagoda appeared in the video (about 3:41, then again at about 5:17, etc.) over Rick's shoulder.
